Depending on what rom I'm using, the misc folder will have anywhere from 3.5gb to 6gb. When I go into folder to delete items nothing shows that amount at all. I have tried backing up to SD card and formatting and its still there.
Any idea on how to clear out these items for the extra space? Or if they are important and I need them? What are they exactly. Thanks in advance.

Just realized after testing I'm formatting SD card. Not phone storage. Any idea how to format just phone storage without losing apps installed.

What folder do you mean? Whats the path? Cuz I have no 'misc' folder on either SD or Ext SD

There is no folder but when I go into settings and storage it show misc files using 3.9gb and when I click on it doesn't show what's taking it up or where it is.

I have no idea then. I just checked my storage and I have no 'misc files' like that. Try finding the lost.dir folder and emptying that. It's the equivalent to the recycle bin on windows.

Download the full version of sd maid. Learn it first, research all the options. It works wonders for cleaning up all useless files / data etc.

If you tap that misc. file, it wil show you what makes up that number

That's what the second screenshot is. After I hit Misc thats the screen that shows up. This doesn't add up to the 3.95gb it says and that pic shows all, there is no scroll.

I would assume any that come with bloatware. Being yours is a custom rom I would think any apps that come with it would be under apps. But since verizon and samsung have a bunch of stuff that you just can't uninstall by default they probably just hide them under misc

Have you run an AOSP ROM? Is the 'misc' files still there then? I'd flash back to my TouchWiz ROM right now but I'm in the middle of downloading a ton of shiat.
The funny thing is that I wasn't even sure TWRP did it. Im going on what someone else said. I know the stock recovery does and CWM doesnt... that's about it... lmao

I am facing similar issue. In my case I have had a small 500 MB left on my Phone then ran CWM nandroid backup which failed due to limited space (and I lost those 500MB), then I freeed up some 500 MB space and installed TWP recovery and tried backup with it which failed too and I lost those 500MB too. Then I switched back top CWM recovery and moved pictures to external SD-card now I have got 800MB but I am sure there are some temp files two previously failed backups. Any ideas where to find them? I thought they would be MISC files which are 4.51GB on my SGS3.

[MOD/TOOL] FlashBack - Flashable Backups

This is a simple tool that will make a flashable backup of your apps.
It only backs up the apps no data, yet. There are alot of ways to do this but this one actually makes a flashable zip file and puts it on you sdcard.
Just flash FlashBack-Installer.zip and open up terminal and type
su
Then type
apps
Run the backup (It takes a minute before it starts going)
Then flash your new rom or whatever and right after flash FlashBack.zip to restore your apps.
Saves alot of time for people who do alot of flashing like me. And this should work with most devices if not all of them. It uses busybox to mount the drives in the updater-script files.
I will be adding more to this so post any ideas or feedback you have.
This works awesome, I know there are other things out there for this but this is so much easier. Thanks for the release man.

It works now in conjunction with titanium. Titanium works quickly to restore data.
If this thing puts the apps back, titanium can restore the data much easier than it is to restore the apps with titanium.

[Q] Restoring Text Messages, am I missing something?

So i've been using Nandroid Browser app to save my text message files from my Cwm backups, mmssms.db and telephony.db and then pushing them to the com.android.providers.telephony/database directory in /data using ES file explorer so i can read them, but when i go to some my contacts, i don't see any texts, even after restarting the phone. Are there any other files i need to be copying and pushing?
In com.android.providers.telephony/database directory, there are 4 files
mmssms.db
nwk_info.db
telephony.db
tether_dun.db
Thanks

Just use Mybackuproot from the market. It allows you to ackup sms and mms and then restore them back to the message list...
I discovered SMS Backup & Restore - Apps on Android Market http://bit.ly/ACQlqR recently, and it works perfect. It doesn't restore picture messages, but everything else.
If your backup has several thousand messages (I had around 5000), and you restore, after the restore your messaging app "appears" to be crashed and only shows a black screen. You just have to let it sit open in that state for the messaging app to index all the messages.

Yes there are two ways that I can think of.
The first way is to make a nand of cm9. Nand back to what you want to restore from. Use one of the many SMS/MMS backup and restore apps. Then nand back to CM9 and restore using the app. That is the hard way.
Easy way involves TB if you use it.

I said "if you use it" because of some features it has that will do exactly what you are asking. You don't need to have any backup of your apps from TB at all. All you need is the program and a recent nand.

Way to try though man. It's actually phone/messaging storage. Yeah I know they made that one tricky. lol I restore just the data and it works for me. That extract from nand feature in TB is so useful. Ever get a market update and the new version sucks. Just pull the old version from a nand.

First off, your spamming, its good that they put a 5 minute limit on you. This isn't Twitter or Facebook.
You're posting non-sense. If you are stuck in a problem, such as the system not acting properly, flash back to stock using Heimdall.
If its a physical problem (power button not working, etc.) then you need to get that fix, not spam in XDA.

Installing apk files - App not installed? ???

Hi all, bare with me, i hope this is in the correct place as have searched and cant find a thing. Just come from an iphone to samsung note so be gentle..

Some apps need to be installed via Root Explorer by placing it to some folder.
So why after so many attempts did it work? ??
Also why do some apps insist on only working from the phone memory and not external sd card, is my 64gb card going to be useless?

You should root it, flash a custom rom, remove the unused applications, this will make it a much faster.I'd recommend you flash the Gadgetcheck's RevoHD for Note, its perfect.
Now, when you try to install an application from any other place but market, its normal to not be able to. If you are not rooted you shouldnt be able to as well.
When I try to install an application that I have downloaded from somewhere else I think it requires superuser permissions and I have to go to Settings/Applications/Unknown sources and check it.Doing this might solve your problems.
But cant tell for sure, I'm an owner of S II not note.
Good luck.
I cant root it though

Hi there... just some ideas and few questions
First off all... is that a new samsung from a store or you bought it from someone else ?
What to try:
- Shutdown the phone
- remove the SD card
- after that boot normaly into the OS
- then go to settings - applications and find the market / play store app
- Click on it, FORCE CLOSE if you can and clear the CACHE
- After that try to install any app.
Tell me whats happening after that all.
gl
Airplayit isnt on the store.
Ive tried all of that, just wont install.
Its a brand new phone and i cant install a cystom rom, it wont root ive tried.
Using XDA Premium (GT-N7000)
To manually install an app, you'll need root access. Try asking in the q&a forum for your specific device for help with that.
After you've gotten root access (however you do it), copy the .apk to /system/app (you can use a adb, a terminal emulator, or a third party file manager to do this)
Then, change the permissions on the file to so that owner, group, and users all have read and write (but not execute) permissions (that's 644 if you're using chmod)
Here's a link that explains how to manually install an app contained in taskmanager.apk
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2012/03/task-manager-for-cm-rom-on-gt-s5570.html
If you read the explanations (after the he steps you through the process) it's easy to apply this same process to any other .apk no matter where it's stored.

[Resolved] Titanium Backup saying not enough space

I've flashed a new ROM and restored the app from Google Play.
Among them, Titanium Backup and it's Pro key.
First I've saw the error "not enough free storage".
Then uninstalled both the app and the key. Reinstalled.
Wipe dalvik cache and cache...
Nothing works more.
I can install but it always shown Version Pro (donation) - Thank you! but I cannot backup anything.
P.S. I do not have an .odex file in system\data folder (as suggested in other threads).
What can I do?

Several fixes have suggested so far and different fixes have helped different people. So here an additional option wich migth help.
I moved the backup folder from it's previous location to /storage/B3EC-1310/Android/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/Backup using adb shell which is a lot faster then using a file manager which moves every file in a directory separately.
The B3EC-1310 is the ID of the SD card which will be different for every SD card.
Then I changed the location in Titanium Backup itself as well. That works for now but is still not perfect. I guess I need to change from the AOKP rom to a rom which does not protect the SD card.

Low on Internal Storage disk space? A quick solution!

You've probably encountered this problem more than once, and just wanted for that damn warning never to appear again! Here's how!
1. Navigate to /data/ using Root Browser, or a similar browser
2. Delete the folder called "log"
3. Enjoy your larger storage space!
If you want more space, or this just didn't help you, you can go to see what applications take the most of your *data* space by going to the Settings menu. When you have found the applications which data take the most of your storage space, just go to /data/data/ and search for the application. Then, delete the "log" folder or just some files that are useless in your opinion. If this helped you, remember to click the "Thanks" button!
Sent from my GT-S5690v2 using xda app-developers app
Useless.
Why would I do cleaning manually when there are dozens of apps on GPlay for this and half of them have 'scheduled" cleaning?
Sent from my ZTE Blade III Pro using xda app-developers app
Useless?
Well, because none of them actually clear the logs OR the data, they only clear the cache, which is mostly the smallest portion of an app.
Agreed. Perhaps I overreacted.
Mhmm...wonder why none other haven't though of adding that to those "cleaning" apps
Are the .log files always named the same per app? Perhaps a script can automate this.
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda app-developers app
For apps to clean the folder that i specified to clean logs, they would need root access. If you're smart enough to root your phone, you're probably smart enough to clean your logs yourself
Theres no specific name for the logs, they just exist in a folder named "log" that can be safely deleted. The name is usually the date that they were created, for example 5-25-2014 12:34

So ScriptManager(automating) and a script and you got yourself a maid am lazy to do it manually every time.
