PSA - Battery Drain - Overheating - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Apparently the oculus app is getting stuck in some odd app install or update loop that is causing huge battery drain and overheating. I literally couldnt get it to even charge on my fast charger. It was draining so quickly my charge was just sitting at 40% for 30-40 minutes.
Thread on reddit where I found my solution:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS7/comments/55280e/overheating_and_draining_battery/
I uninstalled sammy vr and all the oculus apps and I'm now back to normal.

Have a look at this thread I started. In spite of having the Rooms app, I have an exynos version and not suffered any battery drain or heating up with latest Oculus installed.

JB battery drain?

Hi there,
is someone having high battery drain with JB? Haven't updated yet but I read some posts about massive screen battery usage.. thanks!
My battery is draining so fast since I've updated to JB ... I'm thinking of downgrading to ICS
No problems here. I have updated from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 through Clockworkmod recovery.
The phone is getting so hot and the battery is quickly drained :'(

Mine is good actually, very good. Same as ics.
Using doublex rom btw

Same. And my 4.0.4 install was relatively clean (had flashed the original factory images and only installed very few apps)
In ics i have some drain, here in Jelly Bean and dont have for now, see if Not is a app draining, Because isnt optimize for the New system..
Compared to stock ICS I have some battery drain in stock JB. Battery stats say it's the screen. I have model i9023.

I've been on JB for about 24 hours, having the same (if not higher) use of the phone, and it seems that there's no "big drain" at all.
No drain at all for me.
For me its good... almost 17 hrs n still 31% battery with 2 hrs of screen on (mostly browsing).

It's not JB that cause the battery drain but the new features that come with it.
The biggest single cause of battery drain is Google Now. Why?
- it causes Maps/Location services to be running at all times (20 % total battery drain in my case)
- it causes Google calendar to be running almost all the time
- etc
tl;dr; With Google Now enabled expect battery time to drop by 1/3.
Phone getting hot is usually a rouge app, but if you're actually using the phone, the screen will ALWAYS be your top consumer of battery. No way around it.
My screen is using up a lot more battery than on 4.0.4. Just checked my battery now, after being off the charger for 2 hours and Maps has been eating up battery. Mine also gets quite hot when using it. After some mildly heavy use last night, it slowed down to a crawl.
I'm sure Google Now is helping to use a lot of battery too. Isn't this always the way it goes anyway? I had the reboots during a phone call on GB, etc. It takes a couple updates for them to get it just right. Hope 4.1.2 doesn't take too long.

I came to the same conclusion; however I have disabled Google Now (since it is not well supported in my country) and Latitude (that has been enabled following the update) but still, battery is draining ...
As someone said earlier, battery seems to be the same while in sleep mode; but when you're using the phone it's a disaster compared to ICS.
Yeah. More than likely Google Now, but what do people expect? It's feature heavy! I for one use Autostarts(root only) for Maps and a few others that like to just fire up for some random action taken by the user. I used GN for a bit but I don't find myself ever really using it on a daily basis.
absolutely NO drain here!
Turn off Google Now.

I wasn't expecting anything besides being able to CASUALLY use my phone during the day, at least send a few text messages before battery dies, which seems to be impossible since the update.
I haven't actually used my phone normally yet, but what type of life are you expecting out of the phone? If you're clearing 10 hours, I'd say that's good territory. Is your phone being constantly held awake? Just crying battery drain without giving any details won't help us help you determine the issue. This phone has never had what I would call great battery management for what my usage pattern has always been. Post a screenshot of your next usage pattern and maybe I or somebody else can help you.

[Q] Galaxy s3 dying in yellow battery?

Was casually browsing the internet on my phone, and my battery was yellow (around 18% I believe) and it randomly crashed. I plugged it in and it's now charging. I did notice that it stayed on 22% for a while. Probably a lot longer than it should have. My phone is rooted, so I'd rather not factory reset or anything like that. This is the first time I've had this issue.
It's a fairly common bug, I don't think anyone really knows what causes it or how to fix it. Weird though because it hasn't happened to me... yet.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Mine just did that at 19% too. Running newest liquid smooth and ktoonz kernel. I remember it happening a few months back and a few battery calibration apps fixed it. Can't remember which though
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Instal App Battery Calibration. Charge it fully then calibrate it.
Don't waste your time with battery calibration apps, that theory was debunked awhile ago...your battery stats are wiped automatically after you charge it past 90%.

Gear app pounding my S6 Edge Battery..

I bought my Gear s2 a couple of days ago and although it's working fine and giving me excellent battery life, my phone's battery life has become terrible. I used to get to the end of the day with 70% left but since I've installed the gear app, that's become 20% or less.
Nothing else has been installed in this time. I don't want to return my watch so can anyone please help?
Same here lots of resets and refreshes decided to just get a rapid car and desk charger for work !!!
Do you have location enabled (in the gear app) ? I would imagine that could do it. I have a oneplus one and don't notice a huge effect on mine.
Sent from my A0001 using Tapatalk
I didn't notice any difference at all with my battery life on my S6 Edge (Verizon) which was surprising because before I never turned on bluetooth - and not it is on 100% of the time.
After the latest VZW update to the phone, battery life has been crap (for my son's too, and he doesn't have a smartwatch/use bluetooth).
Espn app was killing my battery.

It was turned on. Hopefully that will make a difference!
After 7 hours of being off, it's made no difference to the phone's battery life. Google play services and Android system seem to consuming a fair chunk of battery (7% each approx), but that's about it.
Guess I'll have to factory reset the phone and start re-installing each app to see if something else is responsible..
I was having the opposite: my waych battery was getting killed. The fix was to uninstall the gear app in my phone and to a reset on the phone. After reinstalling everything now all is working fine and my battery life is great
Sent from my SM-N910C using Tapatalk
Yup, I can confirm that this works! Battery life much better now on the phone!
Some apps are poorly coded and misbehave with Bluetooth always on. My phone battery was draining quickly too after I got the watch cause now Bluetooth is always on. In the battery stats Gasbuddy never showed up but I could see that the phone was always awake and never went to sleep. After some googling I found out that gasbuddy can misbehave. I uninstalled gasbuddy app and it's back to normal.

If your phone gets hot & battery drains fast last 2 days, here is why!

Hi guys,
My battery is quite stable with the V20 since the 10c update (I'm with H990DS). However, today, my phone drains very fast without doing anything. It also gets hot and I cannot fast-charge it through the fast charger, which has never happened before.
I did a search on the internet and found out that many people has the same problem in the last 1- 2 days with Facebook & Facebook Messenger top of the list. They are very popular apps and I think you guys may have it installed as well on your phone.
Do you have the same problem? Do you have facebook/messenger app installed? My Facebook app version is 106. What's yours?
If you have the same problem as me, try disable facebook & Messenger for a couple of day till they release an improved version.
UPDATE: Not only V20 but other phones like S7E, 6P from my friends are having the problem. I;m 99% sure it is facebook that affects all android devices!
That's true. FB app is a battery guzzler. I always check FB via my browser.
Sent from my LG-H990 using Tapatalk
Normally, fb behave fine, just the Jan 10th update that ruined everything!
I never use FB or Messenger, and when they're among the first apps I uninstall after rooting a phone for this very reason. I was having the exact issue described in this thread this morning and checked to see what was draining the battery. Sure enough, FB and Messenger were at the top of the list. I hadn't even checked on here, so I didn't know others were having the same issue. My phone is not rooted so I can't remove system apps, but I did disable both and things seem to be working much better now.
I'm starting to suspect the download of the update I just got today on my AT&T V20 caused my battery drain.
It was nearly dead last night (uncommon), and only charged 41% overnight.
A couple of reboots, and killing FB, Messenger and DirecTV (high battery use, and I haven't used it), did little.
It applied the update, and my battery usage is back to normal. Weird.
I went from 80% to 4 in a matter of 2 hours... Never gonna update the app again.
Had the issue today. Biggest users of battery were FB, Messenger and DirectTV (which I swore i had disabled but disabled it again just in case).
---------- Post added at 01:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:26 PM ----------
Just checked the FB app page in play store. This is happening on other phones as well. Samsung, LG, OnePlus, etc.
I thought it was just me. Phone hot and battery dropping..... Facebook and Facebook Messenger using 51% of battery.
my battery has been awful, i disabled facebook and uninstalled messenger, i hope this was the issue as i could not tolerate this battery drain, lets see tomorrow how it will be
my version is 107. However, im kind of experiencing a faster battery drain than when i bought the phone. (although i have way too many user apps too lol) but i notice the difference. IM going to download the version 108 and see how it performs
I think I was hit by the same problem last night. Usually, the battery drain during my sleep time is just about 5~7 % only. But when i woke up this morning, I saw freaking 17% drained. And yes, when i open to see the battery usage history, the culprit is the Facebook app sitting on the top with 11% battery usage. But I'm on FB app version 106.0.0.26.68, which was updated since 16th Dec.
It could be issues related to Facebook server, or might be a bogus issue that push the FB app to the top. I'm not sure yet at this moment.
I got hit by it last night. Uninstalled fb and messenger and installed Metal Pro to use in the interim until they fix the issue

Uninstalling and reinstalling FB and FB messenger worked.
Facebook admitted to a server-side issue: http://www.androidauthority.com/facebook-messenger-battery-drain-issue-742402/
Two nights ago my phone had massive battery drain (I typically see around 65-70% battery when I wake up, streaming music all night long), and my phone completely died two nights ago and then continued to drain yesterday morning until the issue was fixed on FB's end.
I just uninstalled facebook amd its messenger and my battery life went way up. Just going to use browser to check Facebook

looks like my guess is correct.
I experienced this situation a couple day ago, battery went from 100 to 54% in about 2 hours, and device was pretty hot, I checked the battery statistics, Facebook and fb messenger were responsible for 19% of battery consumption. I disabled background data for the 2 apps and now the problem is solved, battery life is pretty average, about a day of mid usage. I'll try using greenify with force Doze enabled to see if there is improvement.
I had the same problem. I've desinstalled and reinstalled Facebook and Messenger, and it worked.
I dont have facebook at all. No facebook apps of any kind on my lg v20 and it still gets hot and battery drains even after factory reset. Overall pretty disappointed in its battery life.

3/30/2017 Update causes severe battery drain

I updated my Gear3 yesterday (3/30/2017 update) and the battery drained to 15% overnight from 100%. Before the update, I would charge my Gear3 every 2 days. Did anyone else have the same problem?
Update: I found out that the battery drain only happens with airplane mode on (when I sleep). Update2: The battery drains super fast whenever the watch is not connected to my phone(while running, etc).

Did you update the gear itself or the gear manager app? I didn't get the recent firmware update for gear but got the gear manager update, didn't notice any difference with battery usage but seems bluetooth disconnects more often than before.
I noticed the first day it seemed like battery life took a hit after getting both manage and then firmware updates, but it was better, if not back to normal battery drain the second day.

Mire appears to be draining faster after the watch update as well. I did reset my watch after the update to clean out cobwebs.
Going to turn it off and leave it on charger all night and then restart and see how things go tomorrow.
So far haven't seen any benefit from this update.

Battery drain still seems higher after the update.
Also lost the ability to get audible SMS notifications...watch is set to audio, volume is 100%, Gear settings are for notifications to be shown even when using phone (just in case) but I only get a vibrate on watch when texts arrive.
Using Textra, and audio text alerts worked before this update.

I have a Frontier and got the update a few weeks ago. I didn't notice anything sinister initially but this week it's been really bad. I put my watch into flight mode every night and turn off the AOD, I usually get 5% drain over night. The other day i woke up and it was completely flat! It was at 78% before i went to bed! I've had a few other issues also. Around 11am today I got a low battery warning as the battery was down at 10% so I had to switch to low power mode, last night before bed it was around 60% and I did my usual flight mode/AOD switch overnight...
I can't quite see what this update has actually done apart from break something that was working well....
Same story, a few days after the update the battery started going down twice as fast as before. Yesterday the watch went crazy for a couple of minutes, opening random apps while I was doing a workout. I had to reboot it. This morning I found that it was impossible to install the update for HERE maps. I tried uninstalling it, but it didn't let me reinstall it afterwards. So finally I decided to give the hard reset a try. It devastated the rest of my day, it took me twenty or so trials to finish a restore (bluetooth disconnections, network failures, plugin which stopped working, you name it). When I finally got a full restore done I found that Gear Navigator Companion wasn't installed anymore. I tried to install it manually, but it gets downloaded and transferred to watch, but the installation fails every time. HERE maps, instead, installed successfully. Battery, however, seems like before, meaning every ten minutes I loose a 1% (6% per hour, less than 24 hours of autonomy).
So, right now I have the same issues, I got HERE back but lost Navigator (the only app that gives gpx tracks on a map on the watch!) and I lost a whole day to get here. Quite frustrated and wildly disappointed, I'm seriously considering to return the watch and try a Fenix 5s instead. I loved how the S3 worked before the update, though I liked the new way to calculate calories and HR zones. But I can't have a watch that doesn't last at least two days or that provides this kind of random issues after a hard reset and attempted restore...
I have the same issue. Went dead overnight. It was my alarm source so it was a good thing I woke up early and noticed. After the unintentional power cycle, it seems better, but still draining faster than pre-update. I also noticed a random voice app opening yesterday (the day of the big drain). My watch started talking to me during a meeting. Samsung needs to address this and push out another update to fix the update.
