[Q] Android OS taking up tons of battery on ICS on Xoom?

Hey all
I am loving ICS on my Xoom. However, I have noticed that "Android OS" is taking up tons of battery, with high awake times. I have had it unplugged for about 3 days, and the screen has only been on for like 2 hours. However, "Android OS" is the highest battery eater on the list and has kept the device awake for over 10 hours. Anyone else seeing this? I am having the same problem on my Galaxy Nexus. Thanks for any input.

Have you tried CPU Spy? Mine shows deep sleep when the screen is off. Also screen is the biggest battery user, by far.

Yeah. I used it and it said that it spent 2 hours at 1000mhz (amount of time the screen was on) and 12 hours at 216mhz and 76 hours in deep sleep. That 12 hours is taken by Android OS, and I don't know why. It is killing my battery. Does anyone know why Android OS is staying awake so much?

It is probably apps that are trying to sync. See what you have that might be trying to update/sync.

You also may want to try uninstalling some older applications. I think I read somewhere that some older non-ICS optimized apps can prevent the OS from sleeping.

Do you know of any that are especially problematic?

I have 120 apps. Isolating the problem is going to prove to be difficult. Any ideas which ones? This has been happening with my Nexus for 3 weeks now, nobody else is seeing Android OS taking up a lot of awake time?

Just wipe your system clean and reinstall your apps. That will fix all your ICS upgrade issues.

Are you syncing email via activesync? If so, turn it off for a while and check if it makes a difference. This is what makes android os go through the roof for me on the tablet and the phone!

Is that 120 downloaded apps or 120 altogether (including system apps)? Either way, disabling auto-sync and background data before putting your Xoom down could/should help curb the excess battery drain. The only issue with that is certain apps, like Market, won't function without background data enabled but that shouldn't be an issue if you won't be using your Xoom for a while. You could search the forums or Google on how to create scripts to disable/enable background data and auto-sync for you when you put the device to sleep and wake it back up, respectively. Or just search the Market for an app that does that for you.
Do you leave your wireless radios on (wifi, bluetooth, etc.) while not using your Xoom? Setting wifi to disconnect while sleep may also help.

You know, I had the same exact problem when I installed the first fully functional EOS ICS rom for my Verizon Xoom. The Android OS kept draining the hell out of my battery. I went from having about 5 days of battery life to 1 or two tops.
I decided to try a different rom. Since I don't have Mobile Internet, I decided to experiment and installed the Wingray Version of the CM9 ICS Leak(Kang) and I haven't had this issue since.
So I'm not sure what fixed it, was it because I tried a different type of rom, or was it because I downloaded the Wingray version? Not sure, but either way the problem stopped.
Perhaps try a different rom if you're rooted?

I am experience this issue on my Nexus. Try using easy batter saver. It extends my battery life very well.

I'm seeing some of the same issues on EoS nightly 49. I'm down to 88 percent with barely any use. 14 hours of up time. Android OS at 3hrs and 27 mins up time.

I'm not, if anything ICS is giving me better battery life than HC. Even considering I'm now overclocked and using my Xoom a lot more.
I think a lot of people misinterpret the battery % used though. Just because something is using a higher percent of battery does not mean its sucking your battery down, there will always be something at top of that % list, it doesn't mean there's a problem. It's a relative list. It's entirely possible (and reasonable IMO) to have Android OS at the top of your list if you've used your device for only 2 hours over 3 days! You barely used it, what would you expect to be at the top?

Android OS battery bug 4.0.3
If your android device has been off for a considerable amount of time, Android os should not be at the top of battery usage list; phone idle would be in that spot under normal situation. However, there is a battery bug in 4.0.3. After installing 4.0.4 on my Gnex it fixed the problem (from my understanding 4.0.4 was only for the Gnex as its a newer device and the Xoom wifi is slowly becoming obsolete). I'm guessing this will be fixed in 4.0.5 that will be released sooner or later... my guess is later with aging devices.

My Wifi only Xoom with Team EOS is getting 4+ days of battery life and my screen is whats taking most of the battery. I am using the latest nightly as well as the latest GAPPs. There is something running on your Tablet that is casing the problem you are having. I am having no probles with ICS at all and having great battery life. Have you tryed using maybe setcpu to setup a screen off profle. I would maybe think about doing a full wipe and starting over with the latest of everything.

My android OS was at the top of my battery usage (74%) even when in sleep mode. I used to get 5-6 days, now I get only 2 at best.
I disabled wireless and the drain goes away, android os goes back down to 2-3%.
Any ideas?
ICS 4.04 Xoom WiFi only.

mine is draining somewhat fast when i use wireless, but as soon as thats disabled im good to go

Anyone having crappy battery life with ICS?

Just curious is it just me or does the Skyrocket have ****tier battery life running on ICS compared to it running on Gingerbread? Anyone else having battery problems. I've been running ICS on my I727r for 2 days now and the battery life is very questionable. Probably a battery stat reset will work :S

I've found my battery life better. I haven't put down my phone since, and the battery life is on par with GB with my phone in deep sleep in my pocket. Lol
I did do a battery stat wipe and drained it and recharged it to full.

Yeah, my battery went out pretty damn quick yesterday, but that could be because I've been fussing with my phone more than normal.

The first day of using ics my battery life was okay. The second day my battery life sucked. Why? Because I set up Facebook. Battery manager showed 10% use and I hadn't even checked it. Its the bloat!

Same, my i727r battery life is horrible since i flashed ICS.
I have noticed that my android system is pulling a lot of juice compared to GB. I made some changes today like freeze all the bloat + installed UCLC4 modem. And wiped battery stats + complete drain and discharge of the battery. Lets see if it get better after a few cycles.

My battery seems a lot better! Way way way better. 25 minutes of web and its still full!

Battery has been much better for me with ICS.
Freezing tons of bloat helps..

My battery life has been horrible on ICS but when I look at the battery thing, Face Unlock used 35% of my batter (when my batter was 5% left) o-o it takes THAT much?

My battery life is absolutely amazing with ICS.
I have the stock rom debloated completely, and a lot of junk is disabled. Coupled with turning off auto brightness and leaving data off when i don't use it, the battery just chugs along.
This morning I got in my car at 7 AM, started playing music full blast through the stereo for an hour. Got to class, played some temple run, approximately a half hour worth. 30 texts or so, one 1 minute phone call. (data was off the entire time, it keeps facebook from butting in from behind) My battery has literally only gone down 10%, and it's 1 PM
I'm in love.

Seems fine here, I usually have it plugged in but today am testing it without. The couple charge blips are from when I had to get some files off of it.
I froze a bunch of the AT&T bloatware, have had Wi-fi, BT, GPS enabled the entire time. Moderate/light use... I've attached some screens.
I'm running http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1567817 with the flashable ICS modem.

My battery has been horrible but it's only been a day for me and my signal has been fluctuating a lot on day one. It's stabilized now so we'll see after a few days of use. But right now it is horrible.

It seems mine is doing worse.
But I have been adding a lot of stuff since this is my first time rooting.
I am about to get a battery depleted(at 12% right now) and reset the battery statistics and install the OEM battery.

I thought there was a lot of debating over deleting the battery stats, i remember an article from a google programmer saying that it actually decreases battery performance...i personally stopped doing it a year ago and noticed a better batter experience, most of the time bad battery comes from a bad flash or apps that run in the backround and use location services

My battery life was horrible with ICS so im back to GB. At work with phone in pocket for 2hrs and was already down to 75% off killing battery and charging it fully next day. When I got home after 8hrs of work already at 50% and thats when its in sleep mode. Using it I would drain 1% every couple minutes definitly bloat. Might try new debloated ones but kinda skeptical since GB gives me amazing battery life.

Once the kernel source drops custom kernels will make all you guys stop crying your all used to optimized stuff not samsucks stuff lol give it time

Well condiering I have never reset them and did this first and only flash of the ICS leak, I'm hoping it helps out. We'll see what happens.
I have Juicedefender turning everything off while sleeping(set widgetlocker to deinied so when locked, widget locker stays active to be ready, and juicedefender see's that and turns off data)
On my 2100mAh nexus battery I barely got over a day(was getting 36-40 hours on GB)
Either way, I have two batteries so I'll deal with it until either an official ICS release or a new rom with better battery performance comes around.

I also have the nexus battery. Def have less battery life with this version of ics .
It could be the algorithm the use. At the start of the day is slowly draws down. As the day goes on it seems to drain faster

Actually, I have been having the Best battery life to date. I will post my list of APK's that I removed. I don't do FB or anything like that, so not sure if that is affecting it. Also, in a non LTE area. on the UCLA3 kernel, I was absolutely getting horrid battery life.

I live in an LTE area and I am getting almost a full day of use. Never got that with GB. I keep wanting to charge it, but I dont have to.
I do have Juice Defender running though, and it disables my data in 15 or 30 min intervals when the screen is locked. And I have SetCPU which limits the CPU to a max of 384 when the screen is locked.

[VERIZON] Absolutely Horrible Battery Life

My only concern when buying this phone was battery life compared to my Razr Maxx. I was expecting it to be shorter...... but not this much!
I have tried restarting and clearing cache+dalvik. It seems to keep happening.

Eesh that is definitely not normal. I have the Verizon GS3 and get far better battery life.
I would suggest a factory reset. That seems to work for some people. Otherwise I'd suggest getting a replacement.

looks like something is waking up your phone like crazy when the screen is off...

I love these sort of posts. You obviously have a wake lock that is keeping your processor active when not in use. Download "BetterBatteryStats" from the market and check out your wake locks and partial wake locks. It will be petty obvious at that point. It's most likely a rouge app.
It isn't a systemic problem with the phone. I get around 20 hours with slightly more than moderate use.

can you elaborate more on this? i downloaded the program and I dont see anything irregular at all. when i go to "partial wake locks" i see audioout only taking up 2.4% TOTAL TIM, 7M51S and the next one being dropboxcpuolywakelock
next one being backup, so on and so forth, none above 2%....
I am experiencing the exact same battery life drain as the op...except i have the tmobile version

I had the same issue the other night. Took it off the charger and fell asleep.... when I woke up over 1/4 of my battery was gone. Android System showed the same high percentage used. I went into apps, android system, force stopped it, rebooted.. Hasn't crept back up since.
From my understanding, under idle, android system should be in the 5-10% range.

I did a full system reboot, pulled battery and restarted - all better. Something was tripping my battery up as well. It's not the phone, somethings causing it.

not sure how thats possible at all.. I have the t999 gs3 and other verizon users confirmed very similar battery life..... these phones get around 2.5 hours screen on time.... soo to actually get 20 hours of use, MOST of that time has to be with the screen off.. i dont see how moderate usage would yield 20 hours.... ide LOVE to get 20 hoursss

Your phone never sleeps. I would do a factory reset.

that's what i get, with 2-2.5 hours of screen time. no lte for me though.

I have Verizon GS3 and battery life is great. I too had an issue with battery drainning fast on my GS3 but found out it was Enhanced Mail Apps that I was using that killed my Battery so I uninstalled it. After the uninstall, my battery life has been great. You really can't compare battery life between Mot Raze and GS3. GS3 is far superior.
There must be an apps that is draining your battery.

That is far from normal.
100% LTE. Moderate with periods of heavy use. I would run a few cycles to see if your battery performance improves. Also, as other users have stated, keep running BetterBatteryStats for a few days and it will keep catching the wakelocks you're getting. If you still can't figure out the problem, I would seek a replacement battery from Verizon just to be sure.
Edit: Forgot to mention this before. If you haven't yet, plug your phone in and charge the battery to 100% with the phone powered down completely. Then let it run all the way down before charging it again. Doing this once effectively "trains" the battery to better read its full capacity and won't hurt the overall life of the battery. This is something that I find is often missed with new batteries, but I have had great results with.

Thanks for the replies... i did a factory reset and did not use Titanium to restore the apps in case one of them was causing the drain.
I'm still getting random drains by "gsiff_daemon" (which i'm seeing others having issues with this too). Fortunately this drain is fixed by a simple reboot. Yesterday I was able to get just under 15 hours of what i'd call light'ish use (under an hour of cached Spotify, WiFi all day, 10 minutes of phone calls, 30 SMS) and was at about 5%. Keep in mind I had about an hour in there where good 'ol gsiff was suckin down the battery (It took about 20% in 45 minutes).
The final test for me is this weekend. If it can last a whole day with my moderate/heavy usage.... i'm keeping it. Otherwise, its back to the Maxx.

This doesn't address the root cause of something preventing the phone from sleeping, but I thought I would mention an app that helps extend battery life. Personally I get great battery life regardless of any "saver" apps, and have never gotten less than 12 hours on a full charge, and that was very heavy use. I probably average closer to 20 on moderate-heavy use.
Anyway, as some know there are apps that will automatically turn off your data connection while the screen is off. Most turn the connection on for 1 minute, every 15 minutes while the screen is off so that you still receive email, ect... This does not affect phone calls and text messages, as they do not use apn and would be received immediately. These products can significantly extend battery life with little complication, particularly if you stay connected to LTE all the time. As an example, overnight I might lose about 20% of my battery or more while sleeping. With one of these apps I lose only about 4-6%.
I personally like the BatteryDefender app, very simple to use, and very reliable.

Hey how does this look for battery life guys? Any tips to make it better?
Btw, I get no signal inside school so 7 hours of that was little/no signal.

Since you know you don't get a signal inside your school, you might as well turn off mobile data or even just airplane mode it while you're in there.

I agree, turn off the radio so you don't waste the battery. Maybe you can use something like Tasker to do it for you only when in class.

Tasker is very difficult to use. I have tried and failed. haha. but i found an app called autopilot that will basically do the same thing youre looking for. it will check for signal strength and enable airplane mode if its low. then recheck in intervals to see if it should turn airplane mode off.

Yeah. Idk why I dont already do that. Lol. But I do seem to get a little bit worse battery when using it. Not too bad but not like before

Just turn off data in school. You'll still be able to receive calls and texts without data. I'm using the Synergy JB R106 build and I'm getting decent battery life.

The cell standby is calculated incorrectly so don't worry about that. It's not really using up any battery.
For the exception where it's trying to locate the towers.
Anyways, i'm on CM10 latest night build and i'm getting awesome battery life, along with the VRL15 radio and RPM

I have "my profiles lite" it lets you set times you can have the airplane mode activate so if you have brakes at certain times it will come on at that time

I have used the app called NoBars, which puts the phone in airplane mode when it loses signal for a set amount of time. It then retries after another set amount of time. Sure, you don't restore the connection immediately after getting back to a signal, but it works pretty well overall.

Jellybean ROMs have all been worse on the battery life IME, so I am interested in seeing what the official JB stock will do. I have heard that part of project butter for Jellybean was to ramp the CPU to max upon touch interaction which could be a clue as to why it is worse.

leak has a wakelock issue.. hopefully the next leak or ota will fix it.. but i still like me some jbtw lol

i dont understand how people get days on end with the stock battery......I end up using about 25-30% every hour i'm using it with various battery hungry processes disabled. Now I'm using an extended 4500 mah battery that I hate because it ruins the cosmetic appeal of the phone by making it look fat and heavy. I feel theres something I'm missing in all of this.......
I am not rooted before anyone asks what programs I use.

its easy to manipulate your battery screen to be on for many hours.
your screen on time is a better indicator of how your battery is performing.
all is dependent on settings o course though.

ya went back to synergy ics rom and its night and day my battery last forever on this ics rom with lean kernel at 1.7ghz compared to stock speeds on jb and this ics rom is SO smooth has google now so im not to worried about jb till they get battery life straightened out.

Loving CR4 and the battery.
It was asked how the battery is on CleanRom4... it's doing great! I don't have specific but let me say I use my phone all day for surfing XDA forums as well as standard apps/mms. Talk about 2 hours total daily for work. Even throw in some Netflix and I don't charge it except for every other day.
I would say that's great battery life.

I'm on Synergy r111 and I get great battery life, 5 hrs average on screen time with brightness at 50% n newest radio n rpm. Before only used to average around 3 hrs. I even managed to get 6.5 hrs at one point.

On I5 my battery life was 15hrs with 3hrs screen on. On J1 im at 20hrs, 2hrs screen on, 44% to go...both setup the exact same.

I've been satisfied with battery life on cleanrom le 3.5 thus far. I'm not a heavy user but I'll get 3 hours screen time easily. Tried going back to ICS after jb and I can't lol

battery life

im on cm10, and i update daily with the new nightlies. however the greatest problem i have is the damn battery, i drains fast. this is the main problem i have with it, and im thinkin of goin back to stock sense. can someone give something how to resolve the battery thing

In almost every ROM thread that is NOT sense based, you'll discover that the battery life isn't as good as it is on sense based ROMs. The suggestions that I have read over and over deal with turning off auto-sync or at least Facebook. FB and location services in maps seems to be the largest causes of battery drain... Along with screen brightness. I'm on AOKP nightlies and I get about 14 hrs with about 2hrs of screen time. I haven't tried shutting down Facebook yet so maybe that will help... Ultimately I just deal with the battery issue.

From the sounds of it, the battery life's been getting better and better as time goes on. I'm waiting for things to settle down a little more before switching from clean rom, but I definitely want to get on cm10 eventually.

That's odd because I found that my battery life got much better after installing CM10.
Have you tried to calibrate your battery?

I'm hoping given some time the battery life will increase on the aosp ROMs. Back on the Desire it was the opposite, Sense ROMs sucked battery and the CM7 ROM was better (from my experience anyway).
I'm currently using the AOKP nightly and my usage can vary pretty wildly. On a work day (with mobile data turned off unless I need it, and I always have auto sync off) I can get about 14-16 hours with 2-3 hours of screen on time. On weekends when I use it more it can drain in just a few hours of mid to heavy usage, with a couple hours screen on time.
I have Facebook notifications turned off, and location sharing etc in Google maps turned off too. The worst battery drainers for me are hanging with friends and scramble with friends, after just a few games on either I'll lose about 10% battery. Plus hanging with friends makes my phone insanely hot (highest temp was 51° celcius). Browsing Facebook and XDA for an hour will usually drain about 20% battery too.
