[Q] Facebook and Google maps eating up the battery

Hi All,
I have had the NS for a week now. Strange things happened this week. During the week Google maps seemed to keep the phone awake and drained the battery completely and last the same thing happened with Facebook. I am currently on 2.3.1 living in the UK and havent got the update for 2.3.2 or 2.3.3. I get a battery life of about 24 hr with google sync on for mail, picassa and calender, facebook updating at every 4 hrs, weather and news updating at every 6 hours and screen brightness on auto. Have charged the phone 3-4 times now. Is this battery life ok or is my battery bad. Anybody with the same experience?

Well I just got my Nexus S a few days ago and I get about 12hrs usage with google sync for mail and calendar and contacts and facebook and twitter syncing every 4 hours and also that's with heavy usage such as GPS and google maps. Brightness quite low but on auto. I think you getting 24 hours is pretty good, I've just come from a HTC Desire HD myself and that was even worse, generally died within 6 hours :/

Not yet no but I believe it goes by IMEI numbers so might take a while for it to show up for us as we both got our phones recently depending on when they are made. Mine came with 2.3.1 which I'm still on.

I dont use google maps and I have facebook installed but the notifications are manual. I get a day and a half of battery use

I've found the Facebook app to behave very strangely a lot of times. Even with the notifications set to manual, sometimes it sucked the life out of my battery keeping the phone awake for almost an hour!
I ended switching to Seesmic, really liking the interface.

Ensuse you have sync switched off, either in settings or power bar, and just enable background data.
There is no point in having an app udate auto in 4 hours or like you have 6 hours, if you want that info you mayaswell go to the original source and read it, okay maby not with twitter or weather.
But running a widget that updates ever xhours uses more juce than not using the browser / app untill you need to check that data.
Set your wifi policy to never sleep.

You get 24 hours and you're complaining? I think that's some kind of record with all the stuff you have set as refresh times.

DELETE that facebook app. Its garbage.
It hogs CPU usage for no reason even with sync completely disabled.

Gotta say, since I've done what you just said above, my phone has been running for just under 12 hours and still has 60% battery which ain't too bad
EDIT: It's now been 1day and 4 hours and I've still got battery left! MUCH better than the iPhone 4 nevermind the HTC Desire HD!

For the other half of what you're experiencing, Google Maps is also a professional battery rapist when Latitude is enabled. As Google has added features to Latitude like check-in and pinging your friends, the battery life has progressively got worse.
Unfortunately, the only solution I have found is to sign out of Latitude, defeating the purpose of the service.

Unless you REALLY want all your friends/family to know where you are at all times, keep Latitude disabled (sign out of it from Maps). I just enable it if I know that I'm going into a crowded situation where there's a chance my phone could get lost/stolen.

Relief after installing Seesmic.
After the problem I faced as mention in the first post, I was observing the battery drain after the next charge. I uninstalled the Facebook app and was using the browser for facebook. After a few hours when I read about the Seesmic app mentioned by the fabio008(good find mate). It works like a charm. At the end of the drain I got a life of 1d 8h out of the battery which is very good and am happy with it. I used the phone quite heavily Display was on for like 4h and some minutes.played with youtube and voice calls of 30mins and gtalk with all the sync on. So facebook issue is fixed but last night after another charge maps was gain eating battery. Also strangely if switch off the Wifi when I am out the battery seems to go down in idle state and works fine when I keep the Wifi on.

Google+ App - Poor Battery Life?

I'm just wondering if anyone's been experiencing the horrible battery life that I've been dealing with since installing the Google+ app?
My battery went from being able to go nearly 2 days with minimal use, to being under 20% after 8 hours of sitting beside me on my desk during the work day without barely even touching it (maybe sending a text or 2 during the day).
Android OS has now become the main reason for battery drain on my phone where as in the past, it's always been the Display.
Anyone else noticing this with their phone?

I've noticed it to on my Captivate. It seems like data is constantly going in and out and battery life is non-existent. Going to uninstall the app for now and hope that an update is released for it soon.

So I wasn't just imagining things then.... I've been contemplating removing it as well, which is too bad since I've found it to be a bit useful

If you do remove it make sure to reboot the phone. I was still getting drain issues before rebooting. I'm watching it now to see if it still is draining or if it's been resolved. I'll let you know in about 30 minutes one way or the other.

I'm having the same thing on my G2x running CM7 nightlies. I'm about to uninstall this to test. Did uninstalling work for you OP?
edit: I just thought it could be related to instant upload? My wife has Google+ installed and no issues, but she's running a stock G2x. I'll disable it and test.

Stock Thunderbolt here. Don't seem to have any issues with the Google+ app.

I am also having this issue. lost over 20% over night. I have a nexus s and can normally get 3+days out of my phone. Since installing Google+ battery has not even lasted a day!!!! i have killed the service and already i am seeing massive improvements with battery.
I dont believe it is to do with instant upload as i have turned it off with no luck.
I hope google fixes this issue soon!!!!!!

I've got a Desire using the Leedroid 3.0.8 rom,
but it doesn't seem to show the mentioned issues.
I do have the instant-upload enabled and
about 70 people divided in circles with not
much activity in the updates-stream yet.
(I'm guessing it's based on push technlogy)

I uninstalled and rebooted my phone yesterday...
Curious to see if I get the battery life that I had prior to installing...

Wasn't sure if the battery performance was related to CM7 or the app... So we'll see! I was getting some great battery performance when I was on #34, but did the Google+ install and the update on the same day... Haha

same here on epic 4g. uninstalled g+... problem went away. Go figure.

It's because G+ app has push notifications - any app that has that automatically starts up if closed and starts on boot.
Push notifications are a good thing, but only if you have a spare battery

OMg could i have found the cause for my POOR battery life, i cant even get a single day out the battery with my inspire 4g

I have a htc hd2 running RAFDROID HD and i been using the app for about a week now. I can say i haven't seen an increase in my battery usage while using the app. not sure what to suggest, have you tried to disable push notifications? settings/sync/google/uncheck sync google+ notifications. its set to unchecked as default.

I've noticed that Google+ is trying to instant upload all my photos for no apparent reason. They show up in G+ in Photos->Photos from your phone section, but I'd rather not have all my photos uploaded - eats out of my very limited (100mb) internet and lowers battery life. I'm not exactly sure if its only photos and videos either - need to look into it more.

I uninstalled G+ the other day to see if battery life would increase... And it did.
So I decided to do another test..
I reinstalled G+ last night, and after I took my phone off the charger this AM, I gave it a reboot. My phone's sitting at 72% right now with 8 hours of light usage... So I dunno what to say...
Maybe Google updated it? Maybe installing a different kernel helped me out? No clue...

How do you guys uninstal G+ the safest way?
Its not possible to remove without Roooting it says...

Battery life has suddenly become much shorter

Having been really impressive so far, my battery life appears to have dropped drastically over the last couple of weeks. Previously my battery would comfortably last the whole day, I could leave the house at the start of the day at about 60% and be confident it would easily last the whole day, now I leave the house on 100% and I'm down to about 20% by the time I'm home from work. In particular, whenever I'm down to 14% my phone seems to drop pretty much instantly to 8% .
I can't think of anything I'm doing differently, only thing that comes to mind is I updated my phone via my computer a few weeks ago but no idea if that's connected to the problem. I installed GSAM for a week ago and haven't really been able to pinpoint where all my battery is going, my phone has continued to show a lot less battery capacity than before and also seems to be taking longer than usual to charge.
As expected Screen and App Usage are the main drain on the battery both tend to be somewhere in the 40%-55% region. The only thing which surprised me is that Facebook (which I don't excessively use) is pretty much always at the top of my app usage, often at about 20%-30% of the app usage. So I can uninstall and reinstall this as it may be partly to blame but it doesn't really account for why my battery is dying so much quicker than before. I could also dim the screen a bit to help but I kind of don't feel like I should have to as I've never changed it the whole time I've had the phone so it shouldn't be a cause of why my battery has suddenly got worse.
Any ideas?

I think you have to perform hard reset for your Z3 (maybe some app "eat" your battery), or boot your device in a safe mode and try to recognize what application make battery so quick discharge. Try to use stamina mode.
Did you often charge your phone? After hard reset I recommend you train your battery couple times (3-4 times), for this you should discharge your phone to 1-2% and charge it up to 100% without disconnecting. I hope it will help you in your trouble.

How much screen on time do you get?
I recommend Better Battery Stats to see what's causing your drain(maybe you can attach some screenshots). And yeah FB drains a lot.

I'm currently having the exact problem. Without making any special changes. My battery has gone from the announced 2 day levels to just surging away in the background.

You know, with my old Xperia Z was the same think after update with computer and after I had performed hard reset everything has been ok with the battery. So If you will not try - you will not know. But be careful all what you will do is on you own risk.

I think it has to do with the latest google app update. My battery life has gone down hill this past week after that.

Phew! Thought it was just me who had the problem. I thought it might be some apps I recently installed. I tried uninstalling them but the battery life seemed to have gone down regardless. Its not the same as it was about 2 months ago. I used to easily end the day with over 45-50% but now i need to recharge it around 9pm when its at 10-15%. It could be the new updates that are rolling in for the various apps i already had installed will install battery stats and wait for a better picture.

Does anyone of you use Spotify? It seems to be the culprit for me. Today I have 0,7%/h drain instead of 3-4% compared to yesturday. Haven't started it at all. Seems to be the problem. It was also updated this week in the possible range for when I noticed the problem

[OOS 5.1.8] Battery life got really bad somehow

As I've gotten my new oneplus 6, battery life was amazing. I got around 7-8 hours of sot (and average use) with one cycle.
Now I'm on 5.1.8 and with the same usage I get only around 3-4 hours sot. Only thing that I've changed over the weeks; I installed xposed. I don't know if this is the issue, cause I only ran like 3 modules with it (Greenify, Snaptools and NSFW Gboard)
Something else to say, my op6 is heating up more then it should be recently. Like I'm only using whatsapp and instagram, and suddenly it becomes uncomfortable warm.
In settings I also made all battery improvements, given in a thread here.
Can someone imagine what could be the problem? Or does someone have such an issue also? I uploaded some screens in attachments, maybe this is helpful.

Sometimes it can take a few days for a new update to settle down. If it keeps up, you might reflash. Also, check for rogue apps and wakelocks, which can flare back into life sometimes when you update. I have not noticed any real difference in battery life.

It hasnt made a difference imo for my device anyway. From changelog nothing should affect battery tbh. Maybe wakelocks or something plus running xposed with modules is never good from experience

Well I'm on 4G most of the day, I think this makes a difference because I only get such good results like 7 hrs sot when I'm on wifi. With Airplane Mode enabled I lose about 4% over night, I think this is normal or?

I have the same battery life as all the other part builds. Actually better since I just added ex kennel.
I stay on data, never WiFi since I'm on T-Mobile with unlimited and never get throttled. I loose about 2% overnight (about 7 hours) though I do keep my syncing under control. 1 email account is set for 3 hours, work is push, all under Google account is turned off since I only need calendar and contacts syncing when I make a new entry so I just manually turn sync on then back off. And I turn all background data off for everything other then what I need like messaging apps and email, Google app and that about it. Nothing to crazy but why let things sync constantly when there's nothing to sync?

For me, definitely thought 5.1.6 was the best for battery life.
Have you tried going into recovery and wiping cache? Worked for me.

My best experience was on 5.1.7.

6+ SOT on all 3 builds so far.

Help : Fast battery drainage

Did anyone encounter the same problem??
Two 5ii of mine are draining too fast this month.
I don't think it's a hardware problem, but a software problem.

I noticed that too for a week.
It must have been some Google service update that generated a lot of unusual wakelocks.
In my case, it's gone and back to normal.
reboot your device just in case

Same here as I texted this. I've getting SOT like less than 4 hours per day even I've restricted battery on some apps and restricting background data. However the issue still persists.
Kinda agree with the Google Service Update thingy since after some play store or updates installed and the battery drainage is just absurd.
Also throttling the CPU a lot and temperature is higher than usual, almost achieving 40°C in just usual social media, browsing and working.
Worst is that I've reboot in safe mode, and multiple restarts and is still draining battery vigorously.
Hope some software or google updates can solve this issue quickly.

From my experience (see my previous post) i had the problem for about 1 week and then it went away.
And lately, I'm getting the best-ever deep sleep battery consumption during night: ~3% .
I did not tweak any app battery policy in settings and I'm using stock A12 latest update.
You may have some rogue app update that is not in tune with the correct power management posture.

I have the same issue. It seems to have been triggered by poor network connectivity or something. The first time I had this issue, I had to solve it via software repair. I'm not keen to go through the process for the second time. I have shut down and restarted my phone several times.

There have been a number of posts on Reddit recently about massive battery drain with Sony phones.

I have had the same huge battery drain, with my phone going from lasting two days between charges, to now getting hot and lasting just 15 hours
When I look at running apps, I see Gooogle Play Services has 2 or 3 instancnces. Some with 13 services. In the last two weeks Play Services has used 825Mb of data. Feels like my phone has become an AV transmitter.

Hello guys, today I noticed that the battery is finally back to normal. I turned on auto-update for everything and let it update whatever it needs to at the very first place.
Hope this kind of **** don't happen ever again.

I don't have auto-update and that issue only lasted a few days
