Suddenly, my Senny's microphone stopped working. I was searching and I can see on pictures that where the cancelling microphone is, there is some little rubber piece but on mine is missing. And I wonder why, lol. Does that even make any difference that causes the microphone to stop working?
The problem isn't only on calls, but on sound recorder as well, so I'm getting a bit scared here.
Any thoughts?
Hi.
Can anyone test their loudspeaker on their Nexus 5 for me and post their results?.
My loudspeaker is fine when playing music or videos. However, when I enable the loudspeaker during a call (for hands free), if using any volume over half way it starts distorting like mad to the point its gets a little difficult to understand the person speaking.
Is this just my phone or a common fault?, it only seems to be happening when I use the loudspeaker to go hands free. Pretty annoying as it's something I use a lot.

I do not seem to be having those issue when using the phone hands free. I do notice at the high end the sounds gets a little distorted but nothing like you're experiencing.
Same issue here...now i don't know if it's software problem or should i send the phone for repair?
EDIT: Covering either one of the mics distorts sound in a phonecall.
Problem solved

I have been noticing this since I got the phone last week and I couldn't really figure out why it was happening.
During a phone call I finally found out that the recipient couldn't hear my voice properly, even though I hadn't changed my tone at all, when the phone was kept in a landscape manner.
Has anyone else been having the same problem?
I'm guessing this is a software that, if it has been signaled to Google, could be fixed with an update.

I have similar issues. When I'm lying down in bed and the phone is almost upside down with that top mic port touching the pillow under my head, people can't hear me at all. The bottom mic stops working or something. I have to make room between the phone and the pillow to get them to hear me again. Hopefully a software/noise cancellation issue.

I figured out the problem. I was simply covering the secondary mic (top of the phone). I did a few trial and errors and found that was the problem. So no hardware/software issue, it was just a simple case of mishandling the phone
I hope this is the same for you! :victory:

Thank you! I was wondering why this was happening. I had the phone upside down so the top mic was touching the pillow.

Why it should happen? it is not like this in other phones. the top microphone is for talking on speaker mode. why the bottom microphone stops working when you are laying down?
it is weird.
So, this morning, when i tried to make some calls ( or others call me) my mic is dead also (and everywhere else, google now, video/sound rec -just hiss-) only works when the speakerphone is on, then it works fine, when i close the speaker from the call, mic is dead...
The noise cancelation is not covered with anything ( tried to also cover it with my finger to test) and nothing works... only when the speaker on calls is on...
Anyone found anything about this ?

I have exactly the same issue. Did you resolve it with your phone?
Yeah... The noise cancelation mic was dead. I had to replace it... It was about 30 euro
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Thanks for the reply. Very interesting. I have read so much about this issue and this is the first time I have heard that the noise cancellation mic had to be replaced. Where did you pick up the part? Did you do the repair yourself? Any tips or guidance?
i got it from LG, replaced it myself, its nothing much if you got some tools to correctly open the phone.
Hi all
Picked up a Nexus 5 recently (latest model latest revisions) and love the phone but am having issues with the earpiece quality.
I have to constantly move the earpiece/headset around to hear the person and find the "sweet spot", or they fade in and out.
Also I notice a hiss at times.
Reception and earpiece quality overall just don't seem good.
I have iPhone 5, galaxy s4, and htc one and none have these issues.
I am on rogers wireless in Montreal.
Does anyone else have these issues ?
Any idea how I can resolve them ?
Some have suggested changing kernel ?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance

I have the same low earpiece volume problem.
So i use my phone a lot for voice calls and here's what I've found:
1) Prior to the android update (in stock 4.4.0) the earpiece in-call volume was ok. However the microphone was bad. Meaning other people always complained that i sound very far off and they couldn't hear me clearly. But I could still make calls without using a headset.
2) After 4.4.2 update, the microphone issue seems to be resolved. People tell me that they can hear me better. However the earpiece in-call volume is much lower than before. I can only hear people if I am in a very quiet room and even then I have to strain.
The only way to use the phone for calls is to use a headset (both wired and bluetooth work). The other day I was using my old Samsung Galaxy S3 for a phone call. The difference in clarity for phone calls is night and day. I had to actually lower the volume of the S3 because it was so loud and clear.
At this point, I am not sure whether it's my Nexus phone and a hardware defect. Could it be something that google did in the 4.4.2 update (meaning fixed the microphone, but lowered the in ear volume). Furthermore using a headset at max volume sometimes distorts the audio.
The funny thing is that with the 4.4.2 update the phone speaker is better and louder. However the earpiece for making calls is just plain lousy. I can't take calls unless I am carrying a headset with me.
The earpiece stopped working the other day out of nowhere... I have not dropped the phone, or gotten it wet at all (not that it should matter!) but it no longer plays sound out of the earpiece... Anyone else experiencing this issue? It makes it extremely difficult to be on the phone since I usually talk with the phone to my ear. I have made sure that the call volume was all the way up, so it doesn't seem like a volume issue either.
Any troubleshooting advice, other than making calls and seeing if it starts working?
Same problem with earpiece not working
Did you find a solution to this problem. I've just purchased the S7 and have discovered earpiece not working. Speaker works but not the earpiece nor headphone jack. Probably going to return under warranty but would be helpful if a known solution!
Hi,
did you find out what to do or is it just to send it to a technician?
mine is three days old and doesn't work from day one ...
Sorry for delay. No I didnt find a solution. I took it back to Samsung and they exchanged the handset under warranty. Goodluck.
