Noob questions about Rooting - General Questions and Answers

Trying to root my first device. SM-J100VPP
I can gain root access but not permanently for this one yet. If I reboot root checker comes up negative.
I heard most lollipop roms these days have a root access switch in settings? If I were to flash a ROM with that while I had root access, then reboot, would that rom still be there and with a functional root access switch in settings? I ask because some changes I made with root are still there without root.
Again, noob question. Thanks in advance?
Then again, I don't think theres a working custom recovery for Galaxy j100vpp yet. Been following a thread that might be able to do it though. I would need that right?

[Q] Root and then update or viceversa?

Hi, i got my first android and i´m VERY happy with it.
Although, i still want to make two things to make it better. Eliminate bloatware and update to gingerbread.
My confusion is that, to eliminate bloat i know i must ROOT, but should i root BEFORE updating or AFTER updating?
I have another doubt, will rooting affect functions of my phone like serving as a AP (access point) or any other???
Note: i do have the SGH-T959V (T-mobile´s) BUT it is unlocked and as i live abroad i´m using it with another telco. (Will rooting or updatind affect my conectivity to my other telco?)
THANKS in advance
Xavier
You need to first root in order to install a custom recovery, then the root should persist across different ROMs you flash.
I only encountered one ROM where I lost root after flashing, but I think that is rare.
Can ROOT be undone???
After the device has been rooted, if somethings comes out wrong, can i UNROOT it? and leave the phone as brand new???
Thanks
Yes, but I don't know how for the SGS4G.
For my Huawei U8100 it was as simple as reflashing the stock ROM, but for the SGS4G I don't think it is that easy. The closest thing to a stock ROM I found was a rooted stock ROM.
flash a stock rom with odin and use superoneclick root to unroot the phone. simple at that.

[Q] re-root after ota update?

so i see this problem in other threads for other devices but i just accepted an OTA update while rooted to go from 4.1.1 (what came with the s3) to 4.1.2
Now i have an unlocked phone without root access. how can i regain root access?
CWM wont boot, but otherwise everything i do on a regular basis on the phone works fine, can i just keep it in this state without issues?
i know i am an idiot for not using voodoo but if anyone has a solution i would greatly appreciate it

There may be an easier method, but you can go through the whole unlock / custom recovery / root / restore 4.2.2 method per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
I used this method to root from stock 4.1.1 without trouble.

[Q] can i flash new custom rom without root

So,.... messing about as we do, trying to get an app to work that wont work on rooted device, I installed voodoo to temporarily hide my root and it seemed to work.
but now I cant regain root access. 1: Not sure if voodoo is the issue
2: tried all fixes that I could find on here and nothing working for me
Not really an issue at the mo and I'm sure theres a work around but this is quick fix / quick question
Can I just Flash a new custom rom without root access?
I was going to try a different rom anyway. and don't mind losing data, apps etc
just need to know that I can flash without root and not going to get stuck somewhere
Cheers

No you cant you will struck at Samsung logo
Any other views on this?
Is there not an option in Voodoo where you can hit "Restore Root" ?
Yes there is a re-root option in voodoo but this clicking this doesn't give me back root.. Titanium backup tells me I don't have root, as does a root checker basic app i have, tells me I do not have proper root access
Is the SuperSU/Superuser app still installed? If not reinstall it and reboot. Try that.

Root and still getting updates?

What is the best way to root device and still getting updates?
I don't want to install custom roms for now, need just root and that's it.
Thanks
If that's all you do, root, you'll still get the updates. You'll lose root when you update but it's easy to re-root. I'd look in the general forum stickies on how to root
Hi,
Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47369234 :good:

Hi mate,
You can find rooting procedure here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507905
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Doesn't seem like anyone mentioned this specifically, but yes, if you just root then you'll get the updates, but if the method you choose to root with involves changing the recovery to a custom one, then the update will fail. Make sure you stick (or go back to) with the stock recovery for prompt updates to work properly.

[Completed] Root problem. Help!

Hi everyone,
I need some help on my phone (CM Flare 2.1). I accidentally factory reset it, and has lost it's root privileges. I tried rooting it many times with different tools, and still can't root it. The last one I used was the Root Master app. It rooted my phone but every reboot removes the root. Every time I reboot my phone, I root it again with the app. Anyone know my phone's problem?
Please use [ROOT] Framaroot, a one-click apk to root some devices
to root your device. You may wish to follow the Video in the post #726
Please post in that thread if you still have issues.
