so i see this problem in other threads for other devices but i just accepted an OTA update while rooted to go from 4.1.1 (what came with the s3) to 4.1.2
Now i have an unlocked phone without root access. how can i regain root access?
CWM wont boot, but otherwise everything i do on a regular basis on the phone works fine, can i just keep it in this state without issues?
i know i am an idiot for not using voodoo but if anyone has a solution i would greatly appreciate it

There may be an easier method, but you can go through the whole unlock / custom recovery / root / restore 4.2.2 method per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
I used this method to root from stock 4.1.1 without trouble.

Here's a good one for any devs. I have been fussing with this for 3 days and am at my wits end.
I noticed the other day there was a software update from VZW for my droid X. That night I get home launch ADB name all the renamed .apk bloatware back to normal, and DL & install the update.
After doing so I as expected lost root. No biggie I thought as I Had rooted my phone previously with little effort. Long story short after numerous attempts and now several different methods including z4, 1 click root, etc... I still am unable to regain root access, and am stuck with read only access to the file system.
I have posted on a coupe different forums with this query, and it seems to be a mixed problem. some are able to regain root, others are like me and locked out completely.
So.. the question here lies in this??? is there something VZW or Motorola have done with this update to disallow rooting, and if so is it possible to roll back my OS to stock 2.2 Froyo prior to this update? Alternatively does anyone else know of any tricks I may have overlooked in successfully rooting my DX.
Thanks in advance!!!
Same here. Tried z4 and onion root. Tried the terminal emulator method. Nothing works.

No, nothing they did. It happened because you accepted an OTA while rooted. Every root guide on here should tell you never to accept an ota when rooted, or you could permanently lose root.
i'm in the same boat as the poster. i accepted it while rooted, unrooted and then installed it. It appears i am locked out from rooting.

I just bought an unlocked 9023 nexus s for my sister in India. I am a flash-junkie on my verizon droid inc, but she is not tech savvy. I wanted to load up a good stable system for her before handing over the phone so she could use it as a daily machine. I was thinking about applying the stock 4.0.3 full update but then i saw some issues about wifi and signal and google halting it, so now im having second thoughts. if i do the 4.0.3 full update from recovery, can i go back to gb if i have problems?
will the phone keep getting all future ics upgrades through google?
is 4.0.3 stock rootable? and will root stay in upgrades? (so if i root and give her, Id like her to use titanium and stuff and not have to worry about losing root in future OTA.)
Thanks.
How about reading the stickies.

Nexus devices can always have their bootloaders unlocked and then install superuser afterward. When unlocking the bootloader all of her data will be lost.
Root is disable on OTA updates because permissions get adjusted. You can run a fix permissions in CWM or reflash a superuser zip file after the OTA to get root again.
You can go back to GB by flashing an old system image using fastboot if you don't like ICS.

thanks.
exactly what i needed to know. i might just put ics and give it to her without root so she can keep getting OTAs because i dont think she really needs root.
Hi, this might be stupid to ask but I really need answer for this -
1. I know that with rooted stock OS one cannot get OTA updates, but can anybody get OTA updates with unlocked bootloader - non-rooted stock OS ?
2. Also all the guides I have found to unroot a xoom is asking to flash a stock OS, which will erase all the data & all the customization which I have made. Is there is no way possible to unroot the current rooted stock OS without losing out the small customization.
I came in here looking for the same answer... want to update, I'm rooted, but can't get it OTA this way.
Go to Development and the first post by stachre is rooted stock ICS 4.0.3, cwm flashable zip.
Thats just fr wifi, while i m on 3g build
Still waiting fr an answer :-(

You DONT need to unroot for to get a ota.
The ota is NOT out for the 3g version or any other version at this point.
If EVERYTHING else is stock besides root the ota will install.
The state of the bootloader does not matter either.
I think there's a chance to brick your device if you do an OTA update after you unlock your bootloader?
So if you really want to try 4.0 then I would recommend the TeamEOS roms, they have roms for both the wifi only and the 3G versions.
No there is no chance.

thanks matey , just 1 clarify require on your statement.
my mz601 xoom's current state is unlocked bootloader, cwm recovery, rooted with stock 3.2 OS with a small change in framework-res.apk to send sms.
for this situation also your point stands right?
No.
I put the word everything in caps for a reason.... nothing that is supposed to be there can be changed or deleted. Includes apks recovery.... you know everything
Well guys, I seem to have really done it this time. I was on 4.1.2 (9.16.6) on my HDMaxx and I was having problems gaining my root access. I used Voodoo to keep root and downgraded (while I was still on 4.1.1) back to 4.0.4 and gained root, then updated all the way back up. When I did the update to 4.1.2, I seemed to have some issues with root again. RootChecker said I have root, but all my root apps said otherwise, and I was unable to update SuperUser due to the fact that it was unable to get root access. I went through the post by Dan Rosenberg (http://www.droid-life.com/2013/04/09...r-devices-too/) and it reported nothing but good news. Here's where the stupidity comes in: I didn't boot back up and test to see if the root was working. I was too excited by seeing that I could (finally) unlock my bootloader. I used the motopocalypse tool, and BAM! No recovery, no rom, no nothing. All I have is a screen that says "WARNING BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED" and if I want, I could get into AP Fastboot mode. All other options (recovery, wipe, etc.) just bring me back to the indefinite screen of the unlocked bootloader. Anyone by any chance know what I could have possibly done? Thank you in advance.

What os are you on on your computer have your drivers been updated etc
As stated in the other thread toy should be able to manually push a custom recovery via adb. Check the other thread for a link.

Tried RSDlite to stock?... since fastboot seems to be the only thing working it may be the easiest route to have a working phone quickly.
Not sure if the Maxx is the same firmware as the XT926's but here's the verizon ones http://sbf.droid-developers.org/vanquish/list.php
and instructions for the HD http://www.andromods.com/tips-trick...-unroot-unbrick-droid-razr-maxx-hd-xt926.html
I don't know if that applies to your phone or situation.
New to the droid maxx, not to rooting. Previous phone was a droid RAZR maxx xt912 that was rooted. I am currently on the 12.7.7 update and have rooted using pwnmymoto. Where do I go from there? I have done some searching and I currently have the camera update waiting for install. I understand I need to unroot before taking OTAs to prevent boot loops. Id like to update fully and retain root but I am not sure where to go from where I'm at. Also is the kit Kat an official update? Is there a voodoo ota rootkeeper type app I gotta install to retain root?

see HERE and HERE
read them carefully and you shouldn't have issues. Basically:
1) Root
2)Unlock boot loader
3)reflash camera 4.2.2 camera update (losing root)
4) SlapMyMoto (prep root pre 4.4 update)
5)take or install 4.4 update
6)SlapMyMoto (finalize root).
be sure all steps 1-4 work properly because there is no going back after step 5.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction! If in the future I ever need to wipe my phone while on kitkat, I'd there a root exploit in the works for kitkat yet? I don't want to have to wipe my phone in the future an lose my root. Also I keep reading about system/write access an only accessing it in recovery. I mostly root to run titanium backup to backup and restore my app data and I also use root for an ad blocker cud I hate ads in YouTube on mobile. Is the system/write access going to interfere with either of those? And one last question; what is the best way to get tethering to work. On my RAZR maxx I used to use the entitlement check hack.
if you do a factory reset you won't loose root. If you do a FXZ or full system restore on kitkat you WILL loose root with no way to get it back.
System/write doesn't interfere with anything.
tether entitlement hack doesn't work in KitKat - use this method

Thanks a million again! Sorry for being such a pain. One more question: i d like to take advantage of features I didn't have before, like Google wallet. Is it possible for tap to pay to work on kitkat now? Everything I've read doesn't give a perfectly clear yes or no answer.
Okay, so I got all the downloads I need to start. Before I go any further, I just wanna be clear of the process:
1. Use rsd lite to flash my Maxx to the 12.15.15 OTA update.
2. Now that I am bone stock, no root, I then follow the directions in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49477129&postcount=320[Linky
3. copy the 4.4 ota update.zip file onto the root of the storage, and then reboot the phone, and let it take the 4.4 update, and then i will be fully rooted on 4.4 no issues right?
EDIT:
When I try to flash 4.2.2 12.15.15 in rsdlite 6.1.4 and 6.1.5, it fails instantly, deleted the getvar line from the xml and now it fails at gpt.bin
edit 2: nevermind. figured it out. if anyone else has this problem, when you delete the getvar line, make sure the next line that takes it's place doesnt have any spaces before the < (it will line up with the rest of the < lines.)
I didn't see that you said you had removed write protection. Be SURE THAT YOU HAVE before going any further. Be sure to use slapmymoto BEFORE taking OTA and that it ran with no errors issues.

I have had a lot of issues today. i am finally on the right track to getting updated. I had to run the rockmymoto with all the telnet stuff (ended up using puttytel cuz i had problems with impactor) and then had it fail the first time i tried to run MotoWpNoMo (i think i took too long to hit grant superuser access) ran MotowpnoMo again, and it worked, after running adb command, I am now showing 0. I just finished rebooting my phone after running rsd lite again with 12.15.15. About to run slapmymoto and update to 4.4
SUCCESS!! I am now rooted on 4.4! Thanks a ton for all the help you gave! I'll be sure to help others if they are encountering some of the same problems as I was,

I have just freshly rooted mine, and from what I have learned, no. You cannot. You have to bypass the write protection BEFORE updating to 4.4. You root 4.2.2, (12.15.15) bypass the write protection, then reflash 4.2.2 (12.15.15) the write protection stays bypassed, then you run some commands, update ota to kitkat, then run some adb shell commands, and you're rooted.
One last question: I am getting evrything reinstalled on my new Droid Maxx. I like a clean storage, so can i delete the following off the storage without affecting my root?:
.adobepassdb2
.adobepassdb_2-journal
classes.dex
install.sh
install-recovery.sh
SlapMyMoto.jar
