Z5 battery life - question - 14h is this normal? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought my Z5 because of promised battery life.
However after 2 months with the phone I am not sure I got Z5 or if ppl. describing Z5 really had that phone.
I do not talk much over the phone these days - let say 20-30 min par day.
E-mails (Outlook with 3 accounts) additional 30 min + about 40min-1h of browsing web.
I do use Here We GO (what a stupid name btw) and Google maps - but phone always is charging in a car if I use those apps.
Add Spotify - approx. 1:30 - 2:30 on good day but with screen off - I use it when I cycle or run.
Arrow Luncher .
The last thing that runs in a background is Garmin Connect for my watch (on my Lumia 640 same app with the same usage did not seem to affect battery as much..) but under battery use it is not indicated as power consuming app.
Wi-Fi - ON
GPS - ON
BT - ON
mobile data - ON (LTE)
Just unplugged my phone 7:50 and battery estimation says 14h 26 min left.
Is this normal?

Better than normal. I'm lucky if I get 5hrs

Hmmmm.... feel quite disappointed. One of the main reasons to choose Z5 over new Lumia (another issue was one app not available at the moment for Windows that I need) was battery life.

Yeah, welcome to the club. Battery on this phone is shocking (came from Lumia too...)

[Q] What is "normal" battery life?

I switched from an old WinMo 6.5 (Verizon Imagio) to G2x. Absolutely love it, except the battery life (there is backlight bleed too, but not too annoying).
But when I read thread here, seems my battery life is kind of okay?
1) Went to sleep at 1:20am. Phone had Gmail sync, Exchange sync every 15 minutes, News & Weather widget, and ScoreMobile widget. Checked battery at 5:40am, it was down 11%. So roughly 10% battery every 4 hours. This means 40 hours battery life if I leave the phone idle.
2) Today I wanted to drain the battery then give it a full charge. So I factory reset device twice (each time it automatically downloaded all 28 apps I installed before). A 1 minute phone call. About 1 hour web browsing. 10 minute Goolge Maps Navigation. Tweeked settings of my favorate text reader and read a novel for about 2 hours. Then watched YouTube for 30 minutes. Other time, phone was left in my pocket. Battery lasted about 11 hours.
So, is it normal battery life for G2x? With CM7, is it possible I can extend the battery life to 16 hours in scenario 2?
I think it is NOT normal battery life because when reading the novel (screen brightness at 20%), I can see 1% battery drop every 3 minutes!!! The text reader just displays static text until I flip page. My reading speed is about 2 pages/minute.
Compared to my WM 6.5 device, I barely notice any battery drain when using the same text reader app (WM version of course), same book and same reading speed.
Well people have found that the only issue with android really is the damn battery! some live through it, some buy extended batteries (like myself) and others just don't feel it since they are used to charging regularly. When compared to winmo 6.5 android is just doing so much more in the background comparitively even though winmo 6's multitasking is pretty neat. I guess other thigns to consider would be your screen resolution and that damn 14.whatever hsdpa chip you got in there!
Btw if you are using a app killer, i suggest try taking it off and see if you feel any diffrence.. i did.. i just found out the rogue app and said good bye to task killers and my battery was a little bit more promising then since it was on an aggressive kill certain app more earlier.
One thing though if you were to put the phone on a stanby time you will notice that it could really last but when doing something you can as you said practically seen it burn fuel, I guess the advancements in tech/screens/etc are just way beyond todays batteries!
I found my stock 2.1 doing much much MUCH better than CM7 or 6 even though people say Cyanogen was doing much better on some phones in terms of battery.
Can somebody post the battery life of their Vibrator compared to this phone?
I'm so mad, U mad?
I had mine off charger for maybe a total of 15mins cause I was deleting stuffoff the sdcard and battery was full it dropped 3% within 15mins
I had my myt4g with miui rom idle with wifi on for awhile yesterday and it didn't drop a % until I used it but even then it still hardly was draining. This LG drains way to fast!!
The battery life WILL improve over the first few charges. My Nexus S was TERRIBLE when I got it. 8-10 hours max. After 2 weeks or so, I was getting 25-30 hours of moderate usage.
The G2x I got ~ 14 hours of usage right out of the gate. I'm on full charge cycle 3 or 4 now, and I'm already over 19 hours. Hoping I can end up at around 25 hours or so.
The batteries AND the OS need time to 'learn' each other. The batteries need to break in as well with a full COMPLETE charge cycles. IE charge too 100% and use it until it dies, then charge fully. It also helps to leave it on the charger for about 8 hours PAST it hitting 100% the first time for some reason.

Hows your battery life?

I got my HTC One Mini yesterday and I'm getting pretty good battery life so far, how is it for you guys?
I'm using jmz's Stock Rooted Odex WWE Rom and Jmz M4 Kernel 9-04-13. I unplugged my phone around 9 AM this morning and it's now 1:45 AM and I'm at 48%.
I installed 12 apps, torrented a 315MB file using uTorrent @ about 600 kb/s, watched 23 minutes of 720p video using MX Player with hardware decoding, watched about 15 minutes of YouTube videos, went on Facebook for about 20 minutes, browsed the internet for about 5 minutes, browsed a forum using Tapatalk for about 15 minutes, made about 5 minutes of calls, sent/received about 20 texts, read a manga chapter, used it as a flashlight for about a minute, used it as a remote for XBMC for about 2 hours, flashed a kernel, and took a couple of pictures, a 30 second 1080p video, and a Zoe to test out the Camera. All of this was over Wi-Fi.
I think I could easily get 2 days out of the battery as my typical usage would be lighter. How is the battery life for you and what Rom/Kernal are you using?
Stock UK Vodafone Rom recently updated with the it's package.
Well...I am sadly unimpressed by the battery. I've had mine now for just under a month and don't get a day.
I use it to surf the BBC website (in mobile mode) over 3g and at other tines WiFi.
I make calls about 30-60mins a day and play a version of bubble breaker.
I can literally see the power drain when surfing the web. This us the single most draining activity...much worse than when I used my desire.
I have configured all power save options, disabled all non essential apps, and ensured the phone is not burning background or unnecessary apps.
Still it goes rapidly. It's a shame but I like the phone so will live with it.
2 days...yes if all you do is make calls. Anything more demanding not a chance I'm afraid. I have tried, a lot.
So it is now 1.10pm and I have 52% and at 9 am I had 100%. No video no gaming but a mix of BBC on WiFi and 3g (i have a femtocell so no burning power while looking for a signal).
Nice phone in so many ways but battery life, in call quality and control, are very poor.
All the best,
Sam
I am planning to buy HTC one mini, Wanted to get real idea of battery life, so this was helpful. Could you laso tell me if that 1GB RAM is a problem maybe once you have 60-70 apps ? I thinking of 2 years life at least so was concerned?

For me it isn't too much of an issue, but they really should have equipped it with 2 GB of memory, 1 GB has been the standard for about 2 years. I have 42 user apps installed and most of the time I can have multiple apps open without any slow downs. Occasionally if I have multiple heavy apps running (Maps, Facebook, Pandora, Chrome ect.) it can slow down due to the lack of memory, but if I close one it speeds right back up. If you read any reviews you'll hear something along the lines of it's stupid that they only gave this phone 1GB of memory, but for most people it won't be a problem which I agree with. I'd suggest trying it out at a local store before buying it. Different people will see things differently, to some the HTC One Mini and S4 Mini will seem slow compared to the regular One and the S4, to others it will seem very fast.
ok guys please keep in mind that your mobile connection eats your power rly ****ing bad. I did a lot of tests with the mini and i'm was even able to get 5days with 25% left. Camera or wachting videos coast a lot of power as well but music is ok that does not need that much power.
Its all about your connections and how good the signal is, so if you want a longer battery life only use wifi.
The device has smaller screen size, lower resolution, half the number of cores, lower clock speed, lower powered GPU, half the RAM, no NFC or OIS. It should get *better* battery life than the full-sized one all things considered, though the smaller battery will definitely even this out somewhat. I wouldn't be surprised if under typical moderate-high usage involving CPU and screen this device should hold out similarly to the HTC One but in standby, etc it will be a bit lower.
Notebookcheck and GSMArena have done thorough battery testing, though notebookcheck doesn't test standby time and GSMArena's standby time testing method is a bit suspect.
Anandtech haven't published a review of the Mini yet but in their review of the Galaxy Note 3 you can see some battery tests they did of the HTC One Mini and it holds out pretty well considering it's not a phablet.
I bought mine two weeks ago. On the first week, my battery just last 10 hours at least and after a few days of experimentation of various settings and process monitoring, I can last 24 hours with still 20% remaining.
My daily usage can be define as quite conservative as I'm busy at work most of the day.
Here's my activities to give you an idea:
Call - at least 3 minutes a day
SMS - least 20 messages a day
browsing via HSPA / 3G - at least 1 hour a day
browsing via wifi - at least 1 hour a day
playing games - at least 30 minutes a day
reading / composing / sending emails - I set this to manual, at least 5 times a day (when I'm at home)

No matter what the phone, you tend to see battery life tests showing 8+ hours of web browsing battery life. However, real life never matches up to this expectation, with 3 or 4 hours of web browsing much more typical. This is the case with all smartphones - even a device like the Note 2 or Note 3 (albeit with higher expectations to begin with: - a Note 2/3 may tests 11+ hours web browsing but typically get 4.5+ in real-life conditions).
Unfortunately this leads many to believe that their brand new device (or its battery) is faulty. But in most cases this is not true.
I'll attempt to explain the real reason for the discrepancy.
Most importantly, the battery life tests are exclusively limited to that activity or task. For example, fully charging the smartphone, continuously web browsing for 8+ hours until the phone dies. In reality when we use our phones, the phone will be on standby, or doing other tasks, at other times. For example, 8+ hours of web browsing from a full charge is not the same as getting 8+ hours of web browsing over a 16 hour day. Those other 8 hours, even if the phone are on standby, are going to use up some of your battery, too.
The single biggest battery drain of a device is usually going to be the screen, unless you have specifically forced the screen brightness to a low (<33%) amount. At full brightness, a smartphone may burn through battery after only 3.5 hours of web browsing even if it could last 8+ hours at 40% screen brightness (the brightness control is not usually linear in terms of power draw). Review sites tend to standardise on a particular brightness level that is relatively low (the reason for this is often that allows fair comparison with devices that just can't get as bright). The bottom line is that 8+ hours of screen on time at lowish brightness might drop to half that or lower if you let auto-brightness bring up the brightness during the daylight hours or when outdoors, or if you prefer higher brightnesses.
Often, battery life tests will be done over wifi with mobile phone reception disabled entirely. This is not realistic as with a smartphone you're usually connected to a cell tower even while you're using wifi, so that voice calls and texts can still come through. Also, cellular uses a lot more energy while idle than wifi does. So even if you set the brightness really low and do nothing else with the phone, you still shouldn't be surprised that you can't get 8+ hours of web browsing if you also have the phone connected to a cell tower in the background. Some sites will conduct battery life tests over the cellular network instead of wifi, and typically these will get much lower battery life ratings (eg. 4+ hours, even with the same brightness level as for the wifi test).
Bottom line is, don't head back to the shop if you only get 3 to 4 hours screen on time during the day with web browsing. This is entirely normal for *some* usage patterns. You can improve it by:
Disable auto-brightness and set the brightness to a low-ish value, say 30%-40% of maximum. This might be able to double your screen-on time compared to full brightness.
Avoid using the phone much in direct sunlight. For the brightness to be high enough to read in direct sunlight, you'll be burning through your battery quickly, and if you've set the brightness manually to a low level as advised above, you won't be able to read it in direct sunlight.
Connect to wifi (but of course, only if you trust the wifi network to be secure and respect your privacy).
Realise that if you ever play CPU- or GPU-intensive games (most casual games shouldn't fit in this category) then a beefier battery or external battery booster may be a good investment. There's not much you can do about their battery use.
Only after considering the above should you hunt through battery usage analysers and wakelock detectors. In many cases even a misbehaving wakelock that keeps your phone partially awake all day has a low impact compared to having the screen on full brightness for just 20 or 30 minutes.

[Q] Another battery issue/query

Firstly I love the lumia 1020 (running black update) .... but ... there is always a but!
On my last two long commutes I have been using Nokia Ready to read a few novels. No issue with the app (ok maybe a few but not for here), my issue is with battery drain.
Even with my phone plugged into the nokia charge block I am finding the drain from phone usage to be greater that the charge from the block. I ran the battery app at it shows the charge to be approx 13.8%/hour but in a 1hr 50min train journey the battery fell from 79% to 12%! Screen brightness is on auto .. and I turn it down in the reader app
Surely this can't be right. I am considering a hard reset and rebuild with just key apps, but be honest I don't have that many apps installed that I allow to run in the background. (allowed 6snap, facebook, weather and battery), I appreciate there may be others that I cannot block but there are few others. In addition I ony have one outlook.com email address being synced.
Any thoughts / Advice would be appreciated.
After thoughts:
I should add I used MAPs for about 5 minutes today but backed out of the app ... I have read elsewhere that Maps can cause a drain issue ...is this true or just urban myth?
I'm new to WP but looked up a source the other day that showed me how to close apps from the multi tasking screen (GDR3). There it said that running apps in the background (which don't really run in the background, but are forwarded when opened again) has no impact on battery life. Coming from android that seems odd to me, but I think its true..
Edit: I see now that you wrote that you allowed these apps to run in the background. Maybe this is something else then..
Reading about this phone in Wikipedia I read that some lumia 1020 users experienced a sudden battery drain. Maybe some faulty phones? Do you experience this issue more often? Might of course be connected to specific apps, but I'm not sure. You would have to observe that.
The maps you are talking about. Is that Here Maps?
To sum up: settings like tracking turned on etc. might affect your battery life, but I think your case is not normal. Consider swapping it under warranty.

I just got my 1020 too. It is not unusual for a AMOLED to drain battery. Especially on white backgrounds.
I am not familiar with the app, but try changing the background to black if the app supports it. Also, if you updated to Black and never hard reset it, it might be a worthy try.
30% drain per hour looks too big for me. May be the app is not optimized and is taking a lot of processing power! (Which might be the reason it is killing battery)
Many people in wpcentral forums expressed the same concern after update.
I also started using the dark browser. It has dark background so that the battery drain is much less.
Lastly, NEVER charge the 1020 overnight. Plug it off the charger when it is fully charged.
Thanks for the feedback .. I removed a few apps and reinsalled and i seem to idle (phone off) between 1.5 and 3% ,, happy with that. Also I have switched to a black background and things do seem better.
Can you explain your comment "NEVER" charge a 1020 overnight .... why not?

So, initially I used to charge overnight, so I had 100% charge in morning. But by noon it would drop to 50% and by 4-5PM it would be in battery saver mode <15%.
I saw many discussions around this and gave it a try to not charge overnight (It only takes me an hr to to from 20% to 100%). It was 100% when I went to bed, 90% when I woke up, 60% around 1PM and 20% around 7PM with approximately the same usage which is pretty decent comparing to other phones I have.
(Glance set to peek, double tap to wake off)
There are many discussion threads on processor trying to continuously run in background when charging for long periods (You can tell it by the slight warm at top). This might be a bug in 1020 only. (My 520 and 1520 does not have any issue).
Atleast in my case, not charging it after it reaches 100% is giving better battery life.
If you wondered about my usage, I have 15 apps with background processes, 10 more with push notifications. I constantly text, use whatsapp and 4 emails fetching every hour, reading news for 10 min approx in an hr. (Thats pretty intense on any phone )
Edit:
Glance feature uses more battery on 1020 than on other devices I tested (925,1520). So, you might be better off using peek mode.
Nokia reading- BUG
Hello! Nokia Reading has a bug with battery eating, it is constantly loading CPU by a lot + drainage from screen = phone dead in 2 hours of reading. Stop using Nokia Reading and try alternate readers like Freda. This will solve your problem.
_____________
N.Reading is an old app intended to be used on wp7 , has been updated last time long ago. Do not use it on new phones- it will drain battery FAST.
Tested on L1320, L620 and 1020. Use other readers.
Heating & Battery draining..
My 1020 starts to heat up at around 5~10 mins of use (& keeps making my hand uncomfortable) & Battery drains like at-least around 2 % per minute when using 3G or WiFi internet.. (Let alone using Camera, that's another story..). Even the battery drain is high on Standby !! :crying:
Pretty much nothing runs in the background except what I'm using.. (Like Browser, Whatsapp or App store etc.)
What to do ???
I'm on WP 8.1 developer preview..

Post your Battery life here

Lets see that monster
As i posted on my first impressions:
Here we are, my first full battery cycle . I'm sure you will get better SOT than me, my gps usage was about 3h , spotify , bluetooth , android wear, high brightness , apps updates , downloads etc.. and this is what i got.
I notice you can get better results, why? Well, with my one plus one and my usage i got 4h of SOT, and most people could get easily 6h , with my SG6 edge i get around 3h SOT and most people got 4h / 4.30h , those are my daily results, with my normal usage statistics , if i wanted i could make it better, way better.. but thats not the case.
That's an impressive result. 5 hour SoT on 5.5' is great nevertheless and you claim that the phone was under heavy usage.
I need to ask though; have you done any Greenify/Powernap/Amplify? I would guess no as I doubt you are even rooted but your wakelock status seems impressive; almost nothing while the screen was off. That means the software optimization is really good.
BTW, X Play does not come with a Turbo charger, right? How long does it last to fully charge with its own charger?
Maybe after 4-5 days of usage, you may start getting better SOT? I thought it could easily touch 6-7 hours, nevertheless this is great.
my first cicle
telegram drains so much i just unistall it

Wow, I expected much more. I get 6 hours of sot on my Moto E 2015 almost every day.

It really is impressive, consider i'm using with almost full bright . No settings for battery saving, no greenify nothing, just my usually apps . It comes with turbo charger , and it charges fast on it, but when using with a car charger or a power bank , it take forever to charge.

Damn, not bad.
Well for me.. this was perfect since I was always charging my phone (HTC M8) and I hated the camera in general so this is a huge upgrade. I think I charged it once for like an hour or so because it had went down to 34% and I wanted to keep it anywhere between 40-80%. I haven't had to use it for too much- I generally just use it to browse FB, Instagram (haven't installed yet- only on the chrome ver), messenger and now have a launcher. Still pretty good because it lasted 2 days (34% when I wanted to charge it) easily and also said it had more than a day left of charge.
I don't have my batter screen short but My phone's batter was superb & it almost used to run for one day.
I did well yesterday
First day - on wifi webrowsing with crome, facebook, youtube + 2 hour mx player - I1m satisfied with this
First full cycle, everything turned on 100% of time (wifi, 4g, gps, location). Also, brightness level set around 70% with adaptive brightness turned on.
I noticed some wakelocks and Goggle Play services sometimes runs in background without reason.

Owners: How's the battery?

XZ Premium owners, how are you finding the battery? My Z2 and now Z5 have never guaranteed me a full day, and now that my Z5 is a bit older I'm charging twice daily. So I'm torn between the Z5P and the OP5, for all it's flaws -- is battery life better than the Z5? I'm particularly interested in dual-SIM, but I assume the battery life won't be all that different to the single-SIM handset.
My last Sony phone as a daily driver was my Z3. Battery was fine on that until I did anything that made the CPU go into meltdown.
On the XZ Premium, Sony and Qualcomm have got things nicely under control - which means the phone doesn't run too hot (which in itself plays havoc with the battery, and can make it near impossible to charge) - and the battery doesn't seem to take much of a hit even when playing video or taking photos.
My phone can still get hot when taking photos and give me the warning, but despite me using the phone heavily, the battery (given its size) works commendably. Especially if you enable any of the stamina modes
I could live with most of these modes enabled all the time, with the only issue being when using an on-screen keyboard (it missing characters pressed), and then the battery lasts even longer.
tl;dr - the battery is good and I'm very impressed. You should get a whole day of usage without fear, and with a good deal of screen-on-time.
I got this phone yesterday. My previous phone was the Z3 Compact which was the king of the battery life back then, but now i think the XZ Premium is better than the Z3c while i use certain apps and it consumes more battery only when i use the Camera, Photos app, Video app and Youtube. I haven't used Stamina Mode yet.
Mine battery life is good, my best was 31 hour running always under 4g with 4+ hours of screen on
I do a day and a half with every single charge at the moment
Thanks everyone.
@Katsigaros, could you let me know how you're getting on after a week or so? I don't plan to buy until the start of this month, so I'd be interested in progress.
@Tonyevol that's impressive for standby, but is 4 hours SOT good? I had the same response from a few people on Reddit, with 5 hours of SOT, but I though 6+ was kind of the norm these day, with good phones getting 7 or 8.
I am getting 5-6 hours SOT as of now. Over a month, I have seen marked improvement week on week. Once we get root/ twrp, we can disable some processes and programs that aren't required thereby maximizing the battery juice.
Little better than Galaxy S7 Edge which is my previous before. I am quite happy with battery.

After the first time I used it i performed a full recharge from 1 to 100 % to calibrate the battery. I am watching a lot of videos and because of that the battery lasts me 1,5 - 2 days. If I am not watching videos I can get almost 3 days.
I will have a clearer view on battery life after one month but right now I am very satisfied with it.
It depends a lot about the way you would use it. For example I'm all days around without wifi connection avaible and of course 4g connection all the time working drains a lot of battery juice. Also having Facebook running all the time with instant messaging always on makes differences. Without using Facebook and limiting display luminosity would grant a much SOT
