Honor 8 Owners: Please help me clarify some specs! - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I've been looking to buy the Honor 8, but I'm having trouble finding a resource that will actually give me all the specs, so I have some questions that I'd like clarified with some proof if possible:
UPDATE: Here are the answers I've gathered so far
Is the 1080p display AMOLED or LTPS IPS? If AMOLED, is it pentile or RGB? 1080p RGB LTPS IPS.
Is the USB-C connector USB 2.0 or USB 3.0? USB 2.0
Would a Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 charger work to fast-charge the phone? No
Is the bootloader unlockable? i.e. is it going to be easy to root the device? Likely to be in the future.
Do both the monochrome and color cameras actually contribute to the photo? I've seen JerryRigEverything's review (https://youtu.be/Z2Cmf_fYgvE?t=305) of the Huawei P9 that claims the Monochrome Sensor effectively does not contribute to photos. Could someone please post photos with the monochrome sensor covered/uncovered in low-light situations? Both cameras definitely do something: https://youtu.be/oRXSrt5DGkw?t=426
Are the lenses the same as on the Huawei P9, which were very high quality? Yes https://youtu.be/IRQIL1RkdiQ?t=2m5s
Thanks in advance!

I'm not actually an Honor 8 owner, I decided on the OP3 instead but have done so much research that I can answer a few of your questions
1) It's LTPS
2) Neither, it's USB Type-C 1.0
3) I expect you'd need to use whatever official cable Huawei spits out, surely one is supplied with the phone?
4) Yes it is possible to unblock the bootloader however they don't make the job as easy as with the OP3 because you need to get an unlock code from Huawei...
5) I think its only purpose it to permit you to change focus post-capture?
6)The camera lenses are not the same, not with that price haha, no Leica branding here!

The full specifications can be found here, I'm not sure if they're 100% correct:

It is LTPS IPS

It is USB-C Connector USB 2.0
Would a Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 charger work to fast-charge the phone?
Yes, but it will not be in the same speed you are use to ....let say, for 1+3 Dash charger. But honestly...it is pretty fast.
Is the bootloader unlockable? i.e. is it going to be easy to root the device?
Bootloader is NOT unlocked at the moment, but it is unlockable. We are hoping Honor makes it easier to receive the unlock code...with the unlock code it is as easy as fastboot bootloader, fastboot unlock oem
Code:
If you need external unlock, can use DCUnlockr ...which is made supported as of 8/18. But you need to pay them :([/B]

My question I guess is would a Quickcharger 2.0 charger be able to "talk" to the phone properly so I can get 9V2A charging (which is the fastest the phone can charge iirc).
Additional question: does the phone come with a case if I preordered from Best Buy? It seems that most other retailers are including the case, but I'm not sure if it's just in the box or something.

Yes, the phone should be able to properly communicate between the 9V2A charging unit.
As for best buy, not that I have seen. You will have to reach out to them for a complete answer to that.

- its IPS
-usb 3.0
-no QC 2.0 won't work (because the kirin processor)
-the bootloader is not unlockable (yet)
-expect root a short while after bootloader unlock.
-JerryRig review explains what cameras do.
-and it has the same performance in camera as the p9
I hope it helped you.

Yes, kirin 950 supports native 10-bit 4k encoding, but I'm too confused that why didn't they put it there. The cameras also should be able to record 4k.

I hear that it has something to do with the Mali-T880 MP4 being the weak link.

Nope, Mali-T880 MP4 is 4K ready, maybe Honor brings it in the future updates.
As they already promised 24 Months of updates.

Ultra-wide angle camera color science is off?

Apart from the frustrating fact that you can't record video and that the ultra-wide lens isn't very wide, the colors and seem to be extremely off in the comparisons I've seen to the point that I don't know if it's solvable through a software update. Maybe fixing the distortion and the super low saturation through software will somewhat save it, I don't know. Heck, even Mi 9 has a clearly superior ultra-wide WITH recording. What do you think? Does anyone that has the phone have a different experience? I want to buy this phone, but at this point in my country it's about the same price as a S10+ (Exynos) and I'm struggling to make a decision.
I wish GCam mods come early to save this mess.

I cannot answer specifically to the 7 Pro, but I can tell you that the colour science is off on my now-sold Galaxy S10 Plus Exynos version. Switching between the main lens and the wide angle lens in the same exact lighting and spot yields different colour reproduction. It might be down to the actual lens used in junction with the software, but I can safety say that this problem isn't exclusive to the 7 Pro if anything.
Also, don't buy the Exynos version of the S10. It has garbage battery life, and has different camera lenses to the SD version that have shown to be inferior to the SD version.
There is a setting in the camera called "Ultra Wide Lens Correction." I wonder if testers are switching this setting to see if this is the issue. I just got mine, but it's night time right now so I will need some time to test (but I only have the LG G7 ThinQ to compare to.)

Yes, but at least every other wide angle camera in the market gives decent results. 7 Pro's results are very undersaturated, very soft and sometimes seem like out of focus.
I know about the S10+. If it was a Snapdragon version I would have already bought it.

Great! Post some samples when you can. I'm not that worried about the lens correction, I don't mind the distortion. My problem is mainly the saturation and softness of detail. If you can, post original results + "corrected" versions using Snapseed/Photoshop to check if some post-processing saves the day at least. Thank you in advance!

Beauty of OnePlus and this wonderful community is the fact that there'll be GCam for it very soon, and we'll undoubtedly be able to take amazing shots through GCam using the wide angle lens.

It really depends. It might not be fixable with gcam.
The main camera uses a pretty good sensor. But it is a different sensor for the wide angle lens. So the quality of the wide angle shots will heavily depend on the quality of the sensor they use for their wide angle lens. It might be a weak sensor, we don't know right now. Huawei uses 4 Sony sensors for example, their wide angle pictures are pretty good. And yes, the best hardware is useless without a good software. But the best software also can't fix a bad sensor.
Not saying that it is a bad sensor, it's just that we don't know by now. We might have to wait for a teardown and some talented devs to see what is inside and if it is fixable.
I can only link you the specs from dxomark:
Primary: 48Mp Sony IMX586 sensor (12Mp output size), 26mm-equivalent lens with f/1.6 aperture and OIS
Ultra-wide: 16Mp sensor, 17mm-equivalent lens with f/2.2 aperture
Telephoto: 8Mp sensor, 78mm-equivalent lens with f/2.4 aperture and OIS

Considering 7T Pro, have some questions

Hi, I'm considering the 7T Pro but have some questions.. would be thankful if you could answer them.
1. Is there a stable gcam that supports all of the lenses ? At least all the rear lenses..? If not, is there a gcam that supports both the main and the ultra wide angle lenses (my two most used)?
2. Is night sight stable with gcam ? Does it work with the ultra wide angle as well?
3. I travel a lot and hike a lot. The lack of Quick Charge support bothers me a lot because I'll need to carry a separate charger for the OnePlus (right now I use one 6 port QC3 for everyone)..well, nothing to do about that, but the other thing is : Sometimes I need a quick charge from a powerbank. Since both of my Powerbanks are QC3 , I guess I will only be able to charge slowly (2A) with the OnePlus 7T Pro.. does anyone know how slow it will be ? I'm trying to minimize the time my phone is connected to a powerbank. How long approx will it take to get from around 10% to 60%?
I don't understand OnePlus .. just add support for Quick Charge and keep using your warp thingy. It's a very Apple-ish move and which is very annoying to see on an Android platform.
4. I wasn't happy with the wide angle samples I've seen, does gcam make wonders there ?
5. Although no IP68, it should still be somewhat water resistant, right ?
6 battery life with 90hz / 60hz.. big difference?
Thanks !
I suggest waiting for OP8

The reason why the 7 Pro was so appealing to me was the nothless display.

The quick charge and warp charge are very different implementations... The difference appears to be Quick Charge literally cooks the battery... Warp much less so...
I have a QC external battery bank too... It seems you can acheive near QC speeds on QC as long as you use the non supplied cable.
There are ports of gcam available that support the cameras I have read, what's so important about gcam though over stock?
Knowing what I know now, I'm glad I didn't wait for 7t pro, these devices are very easy to brick (ONLY IF YOU CHHOSE MUCK AROUND WITH It in the typical XDA fashion) ... However, there also very easy to unbrick with the tools and files provided on XDA. But without those tool your SOL... So, something you should consider... The availability of those tools should be an important purchase factor. You may be waiting a while for a like package to arrive for the 7t pro.
Thanks Cantenna.
After around 2 years with gcam, I understood that gcam is life
For someone like me (photography enthusiastic), the difference is very noticeable. Stock camera will kill details compared to gcam.
Personally I'm not fond of the curved display, but I like stock Android and the non Pro model had lower resolution screen which bothers me too..
Decisions...
Thanks for your input!

You know, I've only owned Samsung phones... S4 - S8+ and I read negative comments regarding the One Plus Pro 7 curved screen being more pronounced... but for me it seems to works great with my aftermarket Otterbox bulky case. Phone also ships with a screen protector already applied, so I've kept that on as well.
I got mine with shipping for $1,123.95 AUD (12GB/256GB)
This is the best phone I have ever owned and like you, the ASOP experience... Don't get hung up on the fast charge, phone actually still recharges very quickly with a standard USB C cable.

108MP camera incompatible with MediaTek Dimensity 800U?

The more i read about the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion, i more i want to buy it, but there is a piece of information which i would like to make sense of.
The phone comes with a 108MP main shooter, but the phone's MediaTek Dimensity 800U SoC only supports cameras upto 64MP.
I need to understand what this means in a technical sense:
Will the phone, using either the default camera app or some other app, for eg. OpenCamera, be able to shoot 108MP images?
If not, are (108 - 64 = )36 megapixels just going to be dummies which won't be used at all?
If the whole sensor is going to be used, how is the SoC going to handle the raw data from the sensor? Will the SoC process the raw data in parts?
Is this going to keep the 108MP sensor from realising its full potential?
I am not basing my buying decision on the camera's megapixel count, it may be a marketing gimmick anyways. I know that megapixel count doesn't always translate to picture quality. My current phone, a Motorola G5S Plus has a 13MP rear cam and that megapixel count is enough for me. I am basically going for this phone for the screen and the stock Android experience.
I just need to understand if this is an indicator for any issues etc. which i should know if i buy the phone.
Thanks.

So i have already bought the edge 20 fusion. But even before buying it i was extremely confused when i saw that 800u does not support a 108 mp camera.
I even searched for this on the internet on various forums, but there was nothing. I guess no one else had noticed that till now.
So i went ahead and bought it anyway as i am a Stock android fan and also just like you ,i wanted to experience the 10bit Amoled screen.
So I think that it maybe a marketing gimmick because the camera performance is definitely not like a 108 mp unit, actually far from it. Lets just say it's bad.
Only good thing about it is that, it performs decently in natural light in the outdoors.. that's it.
BUT
if you are going only for the screen and the stock android experience, you won't be disappointed. The screen is really THE BEST in this range. No complaints with the OS as well.
I don't regret buying the phone. But yes, camera should be better at this price (maybe software updates can optimise it a little)
I found no other issue(software or hardware). The battery performance is also very impressive.
Make of it what you will.
I hope this helps
Hi,
I have also purchased Moto Edge 20 Fusion and using it for around 1 month now. Excellent phone. Regarding Primary Camera they are doing Pixel Binning and providing 12 MP photos. They are also using sensor for giving better low light images. There is also option to select full resolution which gives 80 MP image which has size of 12 to 14 MB.
They still have work to do on camera app which moto is working on. In their forum they have said that a update for camera is in the works and soon they will release the same. After the update hope everything will fall in place as far as camera is concerned.
Following are the points in which it accels -
1. Display
2. Battery ( It lasts for 36 to 48 hours for me with SOT ranging from 7 to 9 hours which is damn good
3. Stock Android
4. Hopefully Camera (after the update)
5. 3.5 mm Jack
6. 30W charging with Charger and type c to type c cable included
7. Thinkshield mobile Security

This whole community feedback on Faceunlock sparks a curious eyebrow raising.
When the P4 XL came out, there were thousands of people that screamed for a Fingerprint unlock. They didn't like Faceunlock. They felt Soli was pure gimmick. They didn't like the P4 XL. When the P5 came out, those voices rose again, calling out the P4 XL for having "mega bezels and ****ty biometrics".
Back when I used my P4 XL, I loved faceunlock, except for two facts
a) Faceunlock was horrible to use when I had to wear masks in shops or other public places, due to Covic restrictions in 2020/2021 - any time I wanted to pay via phone or look something up, I had to write down my pin, which is a horrible security risk when you are surrounded by other people.
b) most apps did not support Faceunlock biometrics at all, even 1 1/2 years after launch, only a handful of apps supported the new biometric API. Meaning, for example, whenever I wanted to open my banking app, I had to write down all the details by hand. That was terrible. And since it was the fault of the developers, and Google didn't force them to comply, there were little ways as a user to mitigate that problem.
Those voices soon died out, however. The ones that "upgraded" from a P4 XL noticed a) the p5 was a downgrade in specs and b) Faceunlock offers a good amount of practicality, IF done right. Now, the P4 XL with Soli was near perfect: You only had to get close with your hand to your phone, it detected you and when you picked it up, the unlock was instant. Friends of mine with IPhones saw that and were stunned and marveled about it ("you don't have to swipe to unlock your phone? You just have to pick it up, and it's fully automatic? Woa, that's cool, my IPhone can't do that. It's annoying to always swipe to unlock, even after faceunlock").
I loved the experience of Soli powered Faceunlock. Soli was not a gimmick, Soli was the final piece in the puzzle that made Faceunlock a seamless experience. The hand waving thing was a gimmick, yes, but not the detection to unlock.
Now, in the recent year, I've read hundreds, if not thousands of people over at Reddit, on Twitter or here at XDA, wishing for faceunlock. Something that (back in the day) barely managed to create a sort of positive feedback.
People tend to take something for granted, until it is taken away.
And instead of a decent faceunlock, we now - sadly, because of the overwhelmingly bad feedback of the Community about faceunlock - have a weak, 2D version that will only be used for simple phone unlocking.
Google should have gone the Apple route, made a notch and then refined upon it, PLUS adding the FP scanner.
Well, let's see what the future holds.

Absolutely agreed. I remember all the articles that said it was a gimmick. I agree that the hand gestures were a joke.
Saying that, I loved my Pixel 4 XL with the soli sensor. I was able to use the face unlock through a module on magisk with all apps that used the fingerprint sensor. So I had the best of both worlds.
I too remember when COVID made it difficult, but think the face unlock was still amazing. I second putting a pill back on the front display with the soli sensor to get a proper face unlock.
Currently on the pixel 6 pro, I am using the face unlock module from Moto baked in. It doesn't allow for you to use the face unlock on in-app though. That sucks. Here's to hoping you can use that API through some form of magisj module on all apps including unlocking the screen.
On second thought, the Pixel 4 XL, IMHO, was the best pixel to me from a utility stand point.
According to someone that checked a display model the modem is the 5300g. This contrasts to the leaks from Android Police that it would be the 5300b or from Twitter that it would be the 5300f.
I'm trying to find out what process node the G2 is on but I can't find any solid information. There are no references anywhere and I've seen guesses with 5LPE, 5LPP, 4LPX, 4LPE, 4LPP which hasn't even entered volume yet, and shout out again to Android Police with the non-existent "4PLP" which they've misconstrued from the process of fan-out panel level packaging.
It's probably going to be on 4LPE, my bigger question is whether the modem is going to internal this time. They cut back on the size of the GPU, so they might have enough space to make the modem internal now. If they don't then it's probably another year of bad efficiency. Will have to wait for TechInsights to do a teardown.
Also the telephoto sensor should be the GM5 as it has 0.7 micrometer pixels, while the GM1 is 0.8 micrometer.
Yes, here's to hoping the modem is internal.

You're going to have to get an external DAC because the only thing connected to the internal DAC are the speakers, there's no other way to get an analog audio signal out of the phone.

Yep, their support page which lists how long guaranteed Android version updates will be for doesn't list the Pixel 7 series yet. Haven't seen an official word elsewhere, but might have missed it.
The fine print in the Google Store say:
"Pixel security updates for at least 5 years from when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Updates may also include feature drops and other software updates. See g.co/pixel/updates for more information."
Having said that, I'm guessing it will still be 3 years of OS updates. If it were more I think they would have announced it during the Event to entice more people to buy it.

I thought most android phones had internal DACs for USB audio but that they normally didn't push high quality?

Question Asking about the quality of the Pixel 7 pro camera

hi GPpro7 users,
I would love to have your answers as users about this :
I have had two old Samsungs (A5 and S8), and they have "old" 12mp cameras...and I have been thinking that nowadays, that's 5 years later, cameras had gotten amazing and I would buy myself one of those, reading about your device the pixel pro 7, about the iPhone, the xiaomi mi11 ultra, the honour magic 4 ultimate, the S22 ultra, the iPhone 14 etc...
I went mad when I read about affordable 48mp, even 64mp and 108 mp cameras that are affordable...and completely puzzled when I read the reviews. Only to end up comparing my own shots to the sample images I could find online, understanding that to my knowledge those cameras produce plain 12mp at all, and any attempt to enlarge them to the claimed say 64 or 108mp size will just give me an unusable image with atrocious quality, whatever the phone.
Then I found about this tool that lets you compare cameras for real after I had read the complete commercial nonsense fuelled reviews online:
Camera comparison tool
see for yourselves how supposedly camera of the year doesn't look 1200€ less cheap than my S8...it is just amazing...no phone really beats others, even old phones...it's all low-quality 12Mp jpegs, that's about not an even decent 8mp jpeg...
And I wanted to buy one because I photoshop for a living, and last camera I had was around 2005, it produced good 8mp raw images, so I could make them great quality material for photo-montages, and therefore produce prints that'd be larger than A4.
It seems I wouldn't even be able to do that with nowadays top-level smartphones that claim they offer 108Mp...and I'm asking because the online info, or basic science, about it online is just misleading.
Please, I would love your own feeling-experience with your device that is supposed to bear awesome 50mp cameras, rather than trust anything that was posted online from reviews to camera samples that could be anything. When they say 50mp, the quality of raw files is the one of average enlarged 8-12mp compressed jpegs, or not ?
Thank you
You get way better pictures on newer phones.
The only time you might see similar results are with perfect lighting.
Thats it.
The sensors are better.
Its one of the few things that actually evolve on phones.
I've had Xiaomi phones with 'AMAZING MEGAPIXELS'.
Its never amazing.
In low light they are so bad compared to flagships from Sony, Samsung and Google.
thank you you summed it up, I couldn't find any info anywhere behind the advertising techniques, I wonder if I can get pro quality , that's actual 50mp fine results, for using it professionally, so I'll be waiting for further replies.
Everything they advertise looks like nothing but better looking -less noisy and all - 12mp jpegs at all, plus good zooming abilities in a few cases, but not as the name suggests, high end pro cameras at all.
I take photos for work on fabrics and carpets. I need an excellent camera phone that takes photos with colors as similar to real colors as possible.
What is the best android phone for my needs?

None, get yourself a DSLR or a mirrorless camera if you need "accurate" colors. All of the phones have their own way of post-processing the photos and almost none of them result in accurate colors.

check the comparison tool link I posted in the first post. Recent Xiaomi phones seem interesting regarding colour fidelity.
but anyway it relies on the ambient light as you shoot too , an app like Color Grabber may help

I get that, but this is a phone first, not a camera and you're not going to get everything you would with an actual camera, at least at this point, although Phone cameras have come a long, long way.
I think people need to be reminded this is a communications device, primarily.
The point of the videos is that those things are taken into consideration in the comparisons.
The sensor is 48 MP, but it blends groups of 4 pixels together resulting in a 12 MP image. You can't blow the image up and recover those additional pixels.

50mp binned to 12.5mp on the primary
Thank you very much because everything online is VERY misleading, regarding 500 - 1500 euros investments.
I am flabbergasted because the ads and product descriptions pretend it's 50mp or more pro cameras, and they happen to be plain okay (not even but...) 12mp digicams. Nothing worth spending 1500 euros it seems. I just expected I could invest like 800 and get a pro camera too that would just let me shoot a photo, get awesome 50mp quality, zoom on the raw file and get another A4 size good cropped shot etc...on top of the disappointment, the misleading info and product description is truly disgusting

The same sensor does produce 50mp images on other phones so presumably it is handled by software, personally I don't think Google will allow it.
It's definitely a software thing as my OnePlus 9's stock camera software does enable you to disable the pixel binning and take a full 50MP photo. The results are pretty terrible though because OnePlus' camera just leaves a lot to be desired.
Yes ! it's all about that, and about the availability of non-binned therefore 48mp or more images online for comparison, it took me ages to find only one of those from a Xiaomi 12s phone, so the actual quality of the camera is actually visible !!! (and not that great !) although the Xiaomi 12t pro and maybe 12s ultra are the best ones I've found so far.
The thing is they show 12mp shots shrunk to our phones' dimensions, or as a shrunk jpeg so that looks good, but that's nothing like the actual camera"s quality that only gets visible on those original non-binned shots, that's a pic that's about an iMac's screen size and it seems very little progress has occurred in five years, the best cam gives okay to good enough results in daylight but that goes with manual retouching. Unless someone proves me wrong...
Personally i don't see what the fuss is about, 12.5mp is more than adequate for printing even at A3 and as they say the best camera is the one you have in your hand, the megapixel myth seems alive and well.
My first DSLR was only 8MP and i did plenty of (paid) weddings and air shows with that.
