WiFi not working - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I couldn't connect to the WiFi in my house (but without problems to other networks) with the Resurrection Remix ROM. It's stuck on obtaining IP adress and if I try static with changing the IP adress it switches infintely between 'saved' and 'conneted, no internet'. I wanted to try Sultan so I installed that one but I get the same problem. Someone know what's up?

Is your home WiFi set to WEP encryption?

Try to change WiFi transmit channel in your router settings, make it lowest possible and try again.

And how do I that? I'm really not an expert in networks and stuff, I don't know anything about my router

Router configuration page in the web browser, and look for wifi channel. Read the web about your router model if you don't know how to get to it.

If it's about changing the WiFi channel, shouldn't OP search for a channel with the least amount of activity surrounding it? Unless it's specifically a compatibility issue with higher channels? I used to install u-verse for AT&T and as far as I know between training and field work, changing a WiFi channel helps with slow speeds and packet loss and such, but that's if the current channel and neighboring channels are being used heavily by multiple other devices in the surrounding area. Too much traffic, more noise.

Captivate Wifi/3G data issue

Has anyone had a problem with the Captivate when in both WIFI and 3G coverage the phone will not download or open a webpage? If I shut off one or the other it works but if both are active it hangs up and doesnt download.
Is this by chance on an enterprise wifi access point? Such as one of those expensive cisco APs you find in schools and enterprise class networks? If so, there is currently a driver problem with the captivate connecting to it, but not trasnfering data. Whether the netwrok is encrypted or open doesnt seems to matter. Personally, I find this a bigger problem than the GPS issue. I had to use wifi static to manually set IP, subnet, etc. This is a workaround, not a fix.

Hey, I think I'm running into this issue at my workplace (we definitely use those Cisco APs, I see them all around). I'm connected, I have an IP, but I can't browse anywhere.
Here's the weird thing though: I can connect to the company's wifi in any other building (I guess different APs?) than the one I'm in and wifi works fine. It's just the building my cubicle's in that doesn't work and it's infuriating!
well thats dumb.
I had that happen once since I bought the phone on launch. I restarted my phone and it went away.
I've had this problem as well, usually my phone switches to only wifi pretty quickly though, so I don't notice much. The phone acts like it is using the 3G connection because the arrows are both indicating data coming and going, but nothing actually happens unless only one or the other is on.
i need to check this at more places but at home i have a standard dlink dl-624 router with no security over comcast. i think my issue initially was because of the wifi sleep policy (see below) but now i am just getting really really slow speeds. pages seem to load slower than 3G....(i mean really cinemaxHD is showing last of the mohicans in pan and scan)....also the pages time out very very frequently.....
Anyone having problems check out the advanced setting for wifi. The phone has a WIFI sleep policy. my default setting was to disconnect from wifi after the screen locks. my screen locks after 30 seconds. so basically it always looking for my network. you can change it to never.
I want to reiterate our findings again. There are multiple threads on other forums concerning this as well. When it comes to wifi, the captivate has a major problem. DHCP does not work on enterprise networks. Period. It is a driver issue. The network can be open or using any form of encryption, the results are thr same. I had numerous software, hardware and network analyst tackling this issue all week in my department. It is related in part to most enterprise networks not using a default subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. There is a workaround, but it is not a fix. You can either set a static from your static pool of ip's in wifi settings, or, if u connect to multiple networks, use wifi static from the market to remember and apply seperate static configs accross multiple networks which is what were having to do currently. This affects all captivates, one which we consider a major problem with deploying this phone to our other users.

I had the same problem and this is how a turn around the problem when I'm connected but cannot browse.
-Use Wifi Static
- DNS from google 8.8.8.8,8.8.4.4
- switch to airplane mode
- activate wifi
- test my conection (open the browser and surf)
- switch to phone mode
Hope it help

Did this, Wifi Static was being used previously to bypass dhcp, and it correctly assigned the IP settings, used the static I assigned from our static pool of addresses. Still no data transfer over Cisco APs at work.

are you able to access a website thru his IP address? in this case it's a DNS problem, try the Google DNS 8.8.8.8 - 8.8.4.4

Its hit or miss really, seems the wifi radio stack locks up and stops responding according to our trace logs. yes i have tried both our internal DNS server's as well as googles. Everywhere else works perfectly. But at work with our Cisco open (no security) APs, it doesnt work most of the time. Through whos ip address??? I have a static set from our static pool to make sure dhcp was not the culprit. Its def the device, and not my netwrok. I have over 100 of these APs deployed here.
Wifi works great everywhere else (at home with WPA2, etc). There is def a problem with enterprise cisco APs.
Netmask issue and cisco AP's
Posted this over in development thread.

Make sure your netmask is correct.
Thanks jhannaman82
I just wanted to give a big thanks to jhannaman82 for posting his company's findings with these wifi issues. My wifi works 100% at home on my linksys tomato router (of course, with a netmask 255.255.255.0). But on my college campus they use an enterprise router setup with 255.255.0.0 and I have been going NUTS trying to figure out if it is my captivate or the network.
I can sometimes get a few minutes of working connection, but it always seems to crap out within 1 or 2 minutes.
I will attempt to fiddle around with switching the dhcp to static IP, and will post my results. Thanks!
edit: no luck with static IP fiddling so far. from my laptop (connected wirelessly), I gathered that the netmask is actually 255.255.248.0... when I set my captivate's netmask to anything other than 255.255.0.0, it does not connect. It says "connected" when I set the netmask to 255.255.0.0, but as usual no data will transfer (it seems). I'm at a loss. *shrug* Hopefully there's a driver update or something.
Thanks jhannaman82!
I just wrote a script with the GScript app: "ifconfig eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0", and have a shortcut on homescreen. The problem was that the netmask was wrongly set to 255.255.0.0 on my office wifi. Now all I need to do is tap on this shortcut at office, and the connection works!
Has anyone contacted Samsung about this ?
I'm hoping this gets fixed soon... This refuses to stay connected at my school. Huge pain.
I entered in an IP address and 255.255.252.0 for my netmask after seeing what it was on my computer and turn on flight mode and tested the wifi and now it's working. I'm not sure if it's just one of those fluke connections that I get... but we'll see.

No,because the routers is beyond my control. I'm sure that wifi is ok and i can access the webpage by another device without doing anything. Certainly i need to input the password.
And thank you for your reply.

I'm amazed at your knowledge of wireless technologies but please explain me why is it a router issue if 2 of my laptops, 2 towers and 2 of my phones (along with multiple guests' phones) have no problem accessing content on my wireless network but my Sensation throws a fit every time it's I try to connect?
Thank you in advance.

well all the routers have config options..... they transmit wireless in a particular ip range depending upon the configuration... ur devices have enrolled themselves on all possible empty slots in ip range and sensation is not able to coz it must b out of the ip range now...possibly u must have used many wireless devices but even after u disable them the temp ip auto assigned stays... so except for new devices old ones will never have problem.... jst disable dhcp in config page of router and enable nat.....if it does nt work add me on gtalk [email protected] and i'll configure ur router via team viewer....

[Q] Wifi on my Sensation works fine everywhere except im home!

While everywhere I go I can get a wifi internet connection, when I try at home I connect to wifi but I cannot get any data connection! My router is fine because all my friends use it to connect on the net with their phones.
Any ideas anybody?
A possibility
There are some cases where the router is not compatible wit Android devices and allows them to connect properly onto the wifi network, but not getting the proper IP, subnet and so on. Have you tried to manually enter these details into the phone and try out if there will be any Internet access afterwards or not.
In some other cases, maybe the DHCP pool is empty so it can not provide you with an IP, where manually entering the IP details should again help. But I think this is very rare case. About the first case though, I met some issues with the routers and the Android devices.
Hope this will solve the prob..
Have a lovely day!
Did you try rebooting your router? This happend to me sometimes too, my laptop can connect just fine but not my phone & a router reset always fixes it.
I have tried to manually enter the IP address, subnet and so on into the phone but still I cannot get an internet connection! I have also rebooted my linksys rooter but still nothing!
Log into your router and change the output channel. Sometimes if the router is putting out on a high channel say 13 for example this can cause some devices to not be able to communicate with it. So try changing it to a low number say 3. This should solve the problem.

This is more than likely because your router is set up to automatically switch to the channel that is the least congested, again if this is a high channel this can cause problems for some devices. What you are doing when you turn it off and on again is resetting the channel. I recommend you also manually select the channel by logging into you router and changing the settings.
I changed manually the router number several times but still no connection!
This issue is due to WIFI encryption. Try WEP or WPA encryption. I was facing the same issue. When i changed the encryption to WPA I am able to access the net.

Yes, it might be encryption, might be the channel selection as well as previously stated.
The thing with the channels is not only if they are on higher or lower, but they are just a little hops on the frequency side so for example if some other device is working on the same or close to yours channel, it might interfere and give you disconnections from the wifi, slower speed, no connection at all etc. etc.. So in some case the channel selection (changing the wifi channel) may do the trick. Unfortunately in your case as I can understand this is not true.
About the encryption, there is also one more thing as a security and that is not allowing the devices automatically, but with it's MAC addresses.
I would recommend just for testing purposes to try and disable all the security and check out the connection that way.
What sort of IP details did you entered on the phone? I mean - I was thinking of entering an IP different from the pool, subnet usually 255.255.255.0 (depends) and the Default Gateway to be the router's IP. Then for the DNS if you can try with the OpenDNS and one from Google.
And if you would like to share some info if there are any other devices connecting with the wifi at the premises and how they are working.
Hopefully you will resolve the issue, soon!
Have a lovely day!

having same issues ever since I flashed latest insertcoin ROM
I tried the 2.3.5 ROM and was having issues connecting to wifi, so I went to the 2.3.4 SSE, but wifi issues did not clear up. It hangs on obtaining IP.
This happens for all settings, static and dynamic, router reset did not help, modifying channels did nothing, neither did changing encryption settings. The wifi connection works for every other device in our home, including a stock Sensation.
Thanks in advance for any help. Since I'm a noob on forums I can't post to the dev section about this.

Sounds like your router and xoom aren't playing nice. Mobile wifi uses power save modes which aren't always properly supported in router firmware.
A few things you can try:
Set to pure A/B/G or N (N is best) no mixed protocol modes
If on N, set short guard interval off and set channel width to 20mhz
Set security to WPA-2 AES, no TKIP
upgrade router firmware or reboot it
If the network ever drops and doesn't reconnect, try https://market.android.com/details?id=org.wahtod.wififixer
It will detect the drop and automatically reconnect.

how do I change these settings? I cant find it anywhere in routers settings
security level is wpa2 only
i have the latest fw
EDIT: nvm I found them, I only have: 11g only, 11b only and mixed (g and b) so I put it on 11g only I enabled turbo mode (what the hell that is) and extented range.

40mhz width isn't supported on any Android device that I'm aware of. Auto detection of width seems to be problematic in my experience.
Short guard interval is terrible indoors due to radio echo.
Source is a decade plus of setting up wifi networks.
I forgot to mention enabling long preamble, which really helps with mobile wifi clients as they spin up from low radio power modes. That's more important than short guard interval.

nop I already disabled that. So far so good I also installed Wifi fix app from market, let's see how long it will last.
Still no luck :/
I get dc with ICS eos rom to...any more suggesitons?
Which router is causing (potential) trouble?
- I have both U-verse and Linksys (the old-model work-horse)
And... I'm also suffering from intermittent wifi issues. But, then this is (for me at least) a good thing as it keeps me focused on work and AWAY from youtube (etc).
Observable problem is that wifi simply drops when viewing youtube.
I had assumed either there was an issue with u-verse or Zoom - though wasn't pressed for an immediate fix since the Zoom did well at non-streaming web and email.
I know this is a long time after your question but if you are still having the issue I resolved mine. I just upgraded my home wireless and my xoom started having horrible download speeds. Ends up it cant handle AES and doesn't let you pick what encryption you want - it appears to use the highest encryption available on the ssid (I had tkip and aes enabled). When I killed AES and only left TKIP my xoom download speeds went back to normal. Issue is, you need AES for N wireless so if you can create a separate SSID for your xoom only, you can have the best of both worlds, N for everything else that supports it, and decent speeds for your xoom.

I think it's dangerous to assume that experience with your Xoom on a specific access point is universal.
Problems tend to be caused by a specific model/firmware of access point interacting with a specific Android device, with wifi drivers and chips being the most important part of the equation.
In my experience on many devices, AES is much less likely to be problematic than TKIP. TKIP is a less secure and less desirable protocol.
I am running N/AES on several access points with my Xoom with no link speed issues.

[Q] Connected to WiFi and no Internet access, how to fix?

Dear XDA members.
I purchased my D820 Nexus 5 a couple of days ago, connected to my home router to set things up but then I noticed something, the device is connected to the router in every single room in the house with at least a fair-strength connection but I actually don't have Internet access unless I'm about 6-10 ft away from the router which is a bother.
Things I tried:
-Restarted router
-Connected to router using other devices
-Edited router settings flipping between 802.11 b/g/n bands
-Changed security type and encryption
-Used a static IP connection instead of a DHCP
-Installed two different roms to test the connection (CM11, Mahdi)
-Installed Wifi analyzer, apk to check surrounding traffic (to avoid wireless interference) and then changed router channel to a suitable one.
I have searched loads of websites and haven't found any working solutions, I'm so desperate for help.
Sorry for writing a long thread and thanks in advance.
Frogi.
In your phone's advanced WiFi settings there is the option to choose between 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz try those. If that doesn't work trying flipping the mobile data switch off and see if that helps.
