I don't think there's enough dev support to warrant a root, yet. The last time I owned an android device was the Galaxy S3/S4 and rooting / custom roms were pretty straight forward. I've done a bit of research and want to rid the bloat without root, or as much as I can anyway. Any tips?

i posted a twrp recovery that works for t-mobile j7 , you can flash it and root , in case you don't want to root , use this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ospolice.packagedisablerpro&hl=ar
it can disable almost every app in stock rom without root

Hey guys, I literally just got my Samsung Galaxy S a few days ago, and I never realized how good Android really was until stepping away from iOS - now, I used to jailbreak my iPhone, and I've heard that I can root/lagfix my Galaxy S.
I'm REALLY stuck at what to do, there's threads on how to do it on here, I fully understand that but most of them are completely outdated and I'm not sure whether to trust it. I'm alright with ROM's, I'm not entirely interested in Custom ROM's as per say, but I'm interested in rooting and getting rid of the lag via the Voodoo Lag Fix.
I got as far as downloading z4root, and putting it on my phone ready to install, but I thought to myself, I don't have a clue what I'm doing after I permanently root it. I came to ask some questions.
Why should I root my phone?
Voodoo Lag Fix, it's not on the Market anymore, where would I get that from and install it for my current version?
Custom ROM's are they safe and what is the advantage of doing so?
I'm in the UK and I know that Samsung are releasing 2.3 Gingerbread onto all Galaxy S devices by the end of March, so I'm not sure if it's worth waiting for that?
Any tips, or how to suggestions would be much appreciated!
Many Thanks in advance.
Anybody at all? =/
There are already loads of threads on the benefits of root vs no root, use the search function.
The voodoo lagfix is now a complete custom kernel.
It is a really good kernel and i can't say anything negative about it.
Rooting is not permanent either, it can be undone.
The advantage of custom roms is total customisation.
New versions of android are usually available as custom roms alot earlier as the official rom releases from samsung.
You could instal just a new kernel (like voodoo's) which will increase performance, or a whole new rom if you find something you like. Just take a look at the development forums. Roms from the kitchen are nice, or darkys rom.
My suggestion would be to read this and flash voodoo's kernel.
After you have done that you have increased performance, can easily get root through a market app and also you will have clockworkmod recovery (CWM).
CWM is basicly needed to get custom roms, or change themes etc.
You would basicly be good to go for anything
Maybe also read some of the threads here and make sure your 3Button downloadmode is working.
I am very new to the android world. my question is about the version of Lite'ning rom I should use?? My understanding is that I need not to have a rooted phone to use this? Good mine ain't rooted. Here is a pic of everything I think will help.View attachment 837063 Sorry about my literacy or lack of it.
You have to be rooted to run any custom rom.
download SuperOneClick and root your device, then install the ROM.
I'm actually scared to root because of the 'bricking' thing. I know nothing about this stuff. Will I mess up?? what to do after, if successful, etc.
Do the research. You can't run a custom rom if your not rooted. If it worries you so much maybe you should stay stock. Custom roms are not for everyone. There are risks and there are bugs that dev try to fix but each device is different and if bugs happen you need to be able to find and work out fixes for it.
Those that just root and flash without knowing what they are doing are bound to be mad when they brick their device.
Rooting is pretty easy but I would avoid flashing a new rom if your worried about rooting as it is more difficult and you need to be very sure what your doing first.

You mean i can root my phone and keep the stock rom?? The reason for me wanting to do this is the Bloatware that is installed on it. Will I be able to get rid of them??

Yes just root the device and buy Titaium back up pro and you all good to go.
You can do it without TIBU pro but it just makes it easier
Hi I'm completely new at rooting and was just wondering if rooting using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825& would cause my phone to be wiped.
I am not planning on flashing any ROMs, just getting rid of all the stuff verizon likes to put in. Thanks in advance!

When you root your phone you're merely adding administrative access to your phone. You should read more into this before doing anything to your 500 dollar phone.
That method works great! And no you will not lose anything. But like the person above me said, do your homework and make sure you know what you're doing.
Good luck, and enjoy your root access
Oh, and while using the casual root method, go ahead and unlock the boot loader and flash CWM recovery right away. Casual will do this all for you. Just choose the options from the drop down menu.
It'll save your a few extra steps in the future if you ever do decide to try out a custom Rom someday.

So I just got my new Sony Xperia Z3 but unfortunately it's D6603 model so no 32GB goodness which means I probably need Link2SD as I'll end up with probably about 10GB user available storage after all the updated which means I need to root.
I haven't even turned the phone on yet, it's still sitting there charging, but let's assume for a moment that it's not yet on Lollipop and still running KitKat which should mean I have various easy rooting methods at my disposal, right?
So what I'm asking is what would be the easiest (and most universal/in other words covering the most versions) root I could use.
I don't care about custom this or whatever, I want to keep my phone as stock as possible, I just want to be able to use Link2SD and maybe Titanium Backup, so if possible I'd prefer not to add a custom recovery or mess with anything beyond getting root access for those 2 apps.
I know I will have to check the bootloader first (I assume it's already unlocked though given the phone it's an international version that isn't carrier locked but that's a different problem anyways). But after that is there a recommended one-click root to use that alters as little as possible and covers as many android versions as possible? Or something almost as easy?
I don't want easy because my technical knowledge is lacking by the way, I want easy because the fewer steps there are the less I can screw up and I'm terrified of bricking the phone....so terrified I've resisted rooting my previous two android phones even after getting replacement phones, but I really need Link2SD now.
Should I use Kingroot and then replace the king Super User app with normal SuperuserSU?
Can I still keep root by doing a PC update instead of an OTA one?

Search forums. You can have Z3 rooted on both locked and unlocked bootloaders or or install custom fw.

I know there are many options, I was hoping to be pointed to what someone considers the ideal easy way. My very problem was that I was inundated by potential rooting options but many either modified more than I would have liked or some seemed suspect/too good to be true (no way there are 30 accepted one-click root programs for this phone) so I'd been hoping someone would help me find the right tree in the forest of options I was looking at.
Anyways today I finally turned the phone on and to my great dismay found that it was already fully up to date (well our local network OTA updates may be a revision or 2 behind international updates) and running Lollipop 5.02 and I gave up all hope then there but Kingroot looked so easy that I decided to try it anyways and to my great surprise and tremendous delight it worked perfectly. Downloaded rootchecker and I'm fully rooted. Tried Link2SD and I'm extremely pleased to say that I have all of Asphalt 8 - Airborne's massive bulk as well as Spiderman Unlimited taking up space on my SD card and most of my user available internal storage remains unused.
I think I'm going to stay with KingRoot's app though and not switch to SuperSU, I don't want there to be any chance of losing this root access (I know it shouldn't happen but I desperately need Link2SD to stay happy so I don't want to rock the boat in any way).
So I guess this thread can be closed now.

Thanks. I ended up using Kingroot before this already because when I turned the phone on for the first time I saw that it was already on 5.02 which I thought made it unrootable (without a custom rom, but I may have missread something somewhere) so I decided give it a Hail Mary try and it worked!!
I think I'm going to stick with KingRoot's app though and not replace it with SuperSU, I just don't want to rock the boat and lose that root access (I know it can be done without losing it, but I'm super paranoid).

I would be more paranoid about using quite unknown app instead of rock solid and proven SuperSU..

I don't have anything sensitive on my phone, I'd prefer they didn't spy on me of course but as far as I'm concerned they can have every shred of info they want. All I need is root access for Link2SD, I don't need the rock-solid and proven SuperSU for that and I don't want any more features incase that offers more.
Since KingRoot has given my phone a chance at a decent life I'm willing to trust them until being shown info to the contrary (and I mean more than just them knowing my IMEI number).

Besides having the more trusted app what would I gain from SuperSU? Does it to do more? Besides the engrish the Super User app from Kingroot seems fine.
Can SuperSU also unroot my phone again (should I need to warranty claim) and also try to keep the root permanent even when updates happen (which Kingroot apparently tries to do even if it likely won't work)?
Oh by the way one more question with regards to rooting. Back when I had my Xperia neo apparently OTA updates would make you lose root but doing an update via the Sony PC companion program could maintain the root...is that still the case? Or do I lose root no matter what now?
Pc companion is a worthless pos. Believe me. Look for alts, anything that works with android to your liking. You'll be much happier. Kingroot is not needed AT ALL. Plus I don't like the fact it calls home. Reminds me of the latest lenovo fiasco where programs within the bios are calling home-wtf! Use the tested working giefroot, flashtool, xzdr stuff. My 2cents
I just got the S5,Had an S3 but I destroyed it accidentally, so work bought me an S5.
The S3 was fairly easy to work with, Rooting, installing roms and such but the S5 is much more difficult.
I have it rooted thanks to the XDA threads but am not having any luck with roms. The phone came with Lollipop on it so I know its challenging.
I'm wondering if anyone has figured out the locked bootloader and how to safely install a rom given Safestrap has no rom slots.
Any help would be appreciated!
I rooted to remove bloat and customize. Not thrilled with stock rom

Okay there's a few things... yes there are roms available for OK3 just check the developer thread for all of them it's fairly easy you just flash it in safestrap and you're correct the rom slots were removed because they didn't work instead you save it on your SD card and install it through safestrap the locked bootloader we can't do anything about I believe someone is in legal talks with Verizon about it (I wouldn't count on anything happening though) and you can still remove bloatware download root Uninstaller it'll appear as a red trashcan in the playstore
