Upgraded Keyboard Dock now won't charge!

I have a B50 keyboard dock that was older so didn't support the new battery saving mode in newer firmwares. I sent it in to Asus for upgrade and just got it back today.
Upon putting my Transformer on it, it asked to update the firmware, I did it.
The battery saving mode works now, but my keyboard dock won't charge!
I plug it in and the light turns on like it's charging, I use a couple battery widgets and it would say it's charging and 2 seconds later it stops.
I unplug the cable and the keyboard dock light blinks like it would if it's out of juice/very low.
My keyboard dock is stuck at 35%. I took the Transformer off and kept the keyboard dock plugged in for about 2-3 hours, put the Transformer back on it and it still says 35%!
So, is it broken? Do I need to call Asus again? sigh.

Have you tried blowing very hard at the connection port on the Dock?
The slightest bit of dust can effect the current required for a charge.

I've been tearing down the hell out of my TF and dock. I know the hardware inside out.
There is a small switch in the dock that controls the charging ability of the dock battery. It sits right on the side of where the chip that they replaced is at. It is very easy for them to accidently flip the switch, turning off the ability to charge the dock battery.
You can either RMA it or you can just open it up and flip the switch. Your choice.
Personally, I have no idea why the switch exists at all.

Hmm Ok, I'm pretty good at taking things apart, know of a guide to take this apart? I'll try and do it myself. Thanks!

First and foremost, doing this and telling asus about it will void your warranty.
Warning: Failure to follow my instructions right down to the letter will result in your in-laws camping out at your place for a month.
(1) Take out anything that's in your full size sdcard slot. Flip your keyboard upside down so that the keys are facing down.
(2) Gently but surely remove the 2 rubber pads that are the closest to the connection between your TF and the dock.
(3) Under there, you will find 2 small screws. Unscrew them. Please don't lose the screws.
(4) Flip the dock over so that the keys face up towards the sky.
(5) Write me a check for $3000 USD.
(6) Use your right hand and hold down the part where the TF makes the connection. Curl your left fingers into a hook, put it under the dock, and pull up. After the left side of the dock is severed, reverse and do the right side.
(7) Now that both left and right sides are off, continue to lift up the top of the dock until the side towards you loses the connection as well. Be careful not to remove too fast. There are wires connected between the 2 parts.
(8) With the connection point between the TF and dock facing away from you, the switch is a tiny black thing on the side of the left board. Look at the following picture.
(9) Flipping it away from you = on. Flipping it towards you = off.
(10) Write me another check for $5000 USD.
(11) Before you close up completely, plug in to make sure it now charges.
(12) Close up and screw in.

People, please spread the word if other people have this problem and I'm not here. This isn't the first time I've seen people complain about this.
In order to replace the chipset to allow powersaving mode, they have to work around the area of that switch. I did similar work around that area, too, and found myself keep flipping it back and forth by accident.

I had a similar experience... I just got my dock back from RMA which fixed the battery drain.
However the dock was returned, completely drained and won't charge (the light indicator on dock blinks orange) but my tablet charges fine.
I was just wondering if this is due to the switch preventing the dock charging?
I've heard that once the dock hits below 3%, it won't charge and I'll have to RMA once again...
I've also checked with dual battery widget and it shows (when my charger is plugged in) the tablet at 100% and dock being N/A (even though it also says its still charging as well)
So yeah was wondering if it was due to the switch?

It probably is the switch.

Goes to show us asus is hiring some really cheap technicians to do the job. I'm ot even an electronic technician. What I do has nothing to do with electronics at all. And by now I know the dock inside and outside intimately.
The least they could do is spend an etra micro second to check the switch before they close it up and send it back to you.

One question. How hard is it to remove the top cover of the dock... I'm trying to but it doesnt seem to budge

It was hard until I read goodintentions' directions in his post

Yeah, that part is kind of confusing, do i dig my fingers between the gap? Because pulling it up from "under" the dock doesn't make too much sense

yeah put it just underneath the metal side lip/gap and just pull hard.

I RMA'd it second time... when I got it back, the dock was fully charged, plugged the dock into the Transformer and it showed the correct percentages, however as soon as I plugged the charger in, I suddenly get the N/A dock on my dual battery widget and the LED notification light on my dock is solid orange... guess I'll have to try open up the dock myself and see what is wrong with it...

My dock was recently RMA-ed (battery was completely dead) and upon return it shows 19% charge but will not be charged. flipping the black switch completely solved it!

[Q] Dropped phone, now charges only on a whim and no OTG

Well, this isn't the best place to ask, but I'm not sure where else to do so. Somehow I managed to drop my phone (onto a carpeted floor from not quite a full standing height, not concrete or anything) and it landed right on the bottom I think. I can't see any signs of damage anywhere at all -- I even pulled out the screws and looked at the PCB itself and I just can't see anything obvious at all. Unfortunately, something obviously is wrong all the same. It simply will not charge at all most of the time, though seemingly randomly on a whim when I connect it sometimes it will. I'm afraid even to touch it once it finally does as just moving the cable around seems to be enough to make it stop sometimes (whereas at some other times I can move it around a lot and everything and it still stays connected.) Last night it decided not to even charge even though the LED indicator and the icon showed that it was connected. What's more, I can no longer use the USB OTG capability to plug in USB drives, other devices, and etc (which I used for diagnostics, repairs, and etc of other things on the go.) I have multiple batteries and external chargers, so this isn't completely fatal but it means:
A. I can't keep it from running the batteries down in the first place (which means larger wear and tear on the batteries long-term since they are discharged further before charging.)
B. Since it's like this it means generally speaking it's not as ready for a fully day of use since it's starting the day with less than 100% charge before I even leave for work every time now.
C. I really did use the USB OTG feature and have already been missing it. It's not as fatal as devices like my Nexus 7 (since that lacks a MicroSDHC card reader to supplement its internal storage whereas this has one) but very annoying at least.
D. I really really miss being able to use a phone dock! I was docking it in my car to keep it at least semi-charged and to output a line output to my car stereo system. It's kind of a pain having to change the volume back and forth between headphones and line output (since a line output really needs the full volume) and obviously it uses more power while playing than just sitting quietly in a pocket anyway. I also liked the way in the dock it wouldn't completely shut off the screen, just go into a really low power mode where it had a faded clock (might be a CM10.1 feature, but nice wherever it came from) and I could just touch it to get back to the player controls.
At first I thought it was just loose, so I tried putting a very thin piece of plastic in the top part of the connector so the connection is extremely tight which fooled me at first by pretending to work really well for a while, but then after a while it just did the same stuff all over again (so it was just doing that thing where it works fine for a little while even when I move the cord around.) I just can't see what could possibly be the problem though because if there is any damage anywhere I'm just not seeing it. I really don't see how the connector could have been damaged anyway since it more or less landed straight on the middle of the bottom (and that ring that goes around the side should have absorbed the shock) but with no cracks on the PCB or anything that I can at all see I can't imagine what else it might be -- plus a few times when it decided to charge it was just sitting flat not being touched and suddenly started working randomly. It really is like it just works on a whim here...
So I'm wondering: just how screwed am I here? I don't have any sort of drop insurance -- I've never dropped a phone in a way that damaged it before -- and I don't think there's any way I could afford the ridiculous amounts they'd surely want for a repair (not to mention that for a while I'd have no phone at all if I did that...) I thought about changing out the connector myself (I see one on Amazon for $8 which is ridiculous, but obviously it has to be the exact same connector) but I'm not terribly confident about desoldering and resoldering something with such small connectors as it is and that one is hard to get to anyway. Besides which, I'm not convinced it is the connector even if I can't see what else it could possibly be. What could possibly be causing it to be quite so random about this? Is there any way at all I can fix this myself, or is this something where the only way of ever getting it fixed would be to take it in for repair at extreme cost (and no phone for a while too)? Anyone have any idea what it might cost for such a repair?

Well I'm sure you noticed the metal charging usb port that is connected to the circuit board.
It sounds to me that it may have broke free a little bit and not making a solid connection.
First thing I would do is try some one else's charger and see if it works ( Just in case)
Then If that failed I would take apart the phone and inspect the connector.
Ten screws on the back plastic and one little black one on the circuit board.
Next you pop off the ribbon connectors and finally pop off the wire connector that runs along the right side of your phone when laying face down,
Double check all connectors and remove circuit board carefully.
Now you will be free to inspect connector
For all you know. Pushing it down with some pressure on the thumb may give you the connection you need again and you should be good to go.
But you really need to see what's broken before you go to fix it.

Well, like I said, I opened it up and I just can't find any signs of damage to the connector or the board. Also, if you look at the SGS3, the connector is actually inside the casing somewhat, so really I don't see how it could have bee damaged anyway -- I'm just not sure what else it could be since, as I said, I also couldn't find any cracks in the PCB or anything.
Oh, and I've used four different chargers and at least three different cables. One charger and cable is the OEM set for the SGS3 and another is the OEM set for the Nexus 7 (which is probably a decent amount more more power hungry.)

You might as well try it yourself THEN go somewhere if it doesn't work out. I wouldn't think if things go horribly wrong that you'd do damage that isn't reversible, and if there was damage it would likely be just to that $8 piece.
You sound like a knowledgeable guy though, so I'd give it a shot.

The thing is, I don't really want to spend the $8 (I'm getting pretty broke) and have to try to desolder then resolder those tiny contacts on a board I'm not even entirely sure how to safely get out possibly messing something else up along the way when I'm not convinced it is the connector (and obviously if I messed something else up along the way I could make things a lot worse -- for instance, breaking it entirely...) Things that should make it work if it were (jiggling and shaking it for instance) don't seem to and then some things that should work don't (for example, last night I disconnected the phone from one charger and connected it to another while it was at least pretending to work and it stopped even though the connector part didn't get moved at all.)
That's my real concern in the end. If it's not the connector, what is it? I'm not 100% confident about trying to replace it myself as it is, but if it's not that the time, money, and effort would be wasted...

Well that's that. The problem, as I feared, was more fundamental (which is part of what I was asking here.) I plugged in something last night and it just shut off. I checked all over and couldn't find shorts or anything to explain it. Even after leaving the battery out overnight it still won't come on. Clearly the problem was much more fundamental than it seemed. Regardless, the question of the connector is moot now. EDIT: It might have been caused by the connector after all. It seems like there are pins at the back that either are loose or were knocked loose by the fall. I THINK one of them was touching another causing a short. Unfortunately, it's too late to discover that now as either way the damage is already done and it no longer works even after I got them straightened out.

Weird fault with Note 10.1. Help!

Hi guys, newbie here, and im in desperate need of your help!
So I decided to buy an Note 10.1 and yesterday I received it. Straight away (after turning on) I noticed this rather irritating noise (like a notification sound but not one that is the ringtones options on the tablet) that the tablet made when I held it with one hand well, at first I thought it was a motion gesture since whenever I hold it with one hand (the right hand) it switches to the previous app if your in an app, or previous Web page when surfing the net. So I searched the options 100 times, and nothing to toggle off.
Anyway it bugged me more and more and I couldn't figure it out, then by chance i just pushed slightly on the back of the tablet and the notification noise goes off. Push again, it happens again. I decided that it could be a loose connection being made and remade every time I decompress the right side back panel (I can play it like a piano). So I took the back panel off (a pain in the ****) and noticed a ribbon cable that runs directly where I push the back panel (the S pen sensor cable). It was plugged in correctly, but wasn't taped to the battery like the 2 fatter ribbon cables.
So, I taped it down thinking that me pushing the back panel was moving it and creating a loose connection. I thought I had solved it. Booted it back up, no sound!!!!! Reinstalled the back panel, booted again and BOOM, the sound returns.......
Gutted.
Not sure what to do next, it definitely sounds as if something is disconnecting and reconnecting like a USB on a PC, im getting the sound but no notification or error. I have no idea why this would make an app switch to the previous app or webpage when on net.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, it seems I have solved the issue. Since this is a new account, I can't post youtube videos. So I'll leave those out for the time being.
Firstly, heres a video showing the fault. As you can see, I've narrowed it down to the docking station/charger connector.
The ribbon cable was seemingly depressed causing it to disconnect briefly before reconnecting when released. Probably the down side of having a flimsy plastic case.
Solve the issue I removed the ribbon cable and taped a small amount of foam right at the mouth of the connector, making the whole connection sturdier and harder to depress with the cover on, which can be seen here.
Hopefully this helps anyone who finds themselves with a similar issue.

Yep, if the problem isn't fixed there's no way it'll get fixed under warranty now...
If the device is less than a week old, in Oz, the shop is supposed to replace the device immediately. This doesn't mean they won't try the old "It'll take 2 weeks to fix" and "It has to be sent back for repairs" schtick....

Keyboard dock malfunction

Okay. I seen a thread about the keyboard dock not working, but I'm a bit lost. For starters, there's apparently a way to update the keyboard dock. LoL!! Also, the issue isn't quite the same as their's.
Here's the situation. The dock charges the tablet, the tablet recognizes the dock, and the mouse pad works. The keyboard buttons don't work. It doesn't type or anything. The tablet sees that the dock is there and tells you to type with it and stuff, but you can't type.
Imagine a laptop where only the touchpad works. It's weird. She said this happened 2 days ago. Today is Aug 11th, so it happened Aug. 09th. (Since some people talk DD/MM instead of MM/DD LoL!!)
Any ideas on how to fix? I'm trying to check for an update, but it's telling me: "Internet connection error or the server is busy. Please wait a moment and try again."
The tablet is completely stock.
I see the dock is a version number:
EP101-0213
My only other option is to take it with me and try a more stable internet connection. Or maybe rooting and see what I can do from there.

The first thing I would try would be a factory reset to partially rule out stock ROM problems
Before that, I would flash TWRP Recovery and make a Nandroid backup
If things still aren't working after the reset, I'd flash a custom ROM to 100% rule out stock ROM problems
Still not working after that, I'd open the dock and check that the keyboard cable has not come loose
Or, if you're brave enough, reverse that and open the dock first
Easyflasher has everything you need for getting root and flashing TWRP recovery

It is weird. Others are saying the keyboard AND mousepad doesn't work but all other functions do, like charging and the ports. This seems to be a weird one since the only thing that doesn't work is the keyboard. My mousepad still works. Hmm...
I'm hoping it's something that simple. I was thinking about buy the table from her. If I do that then I'd do some hardware stuff like that. Hmm... I guess I better get downloading then. I wished I kept my Transformer stuff. I didn't think I'd still need it. LoL!! Thanks for the link.

There are 3 independent circuits in the Dock:
Charging Circuit
USB circuit (includes the touchpad)
Keyboard Circuit.
Any one of these three can stop working and the other 2 will work fine. I would check the ribbon cables to make sure they are all seated properly in the dock. Since the Touchpad is part of the USB ports and is not integrated with the keyboard circuit, it is very possible that the keyboard ribbon came loose. Or worse, the daughterboard that controls the keyboard decided to head south....

Thanks. As of now, it's no point in worrying about it. I've left her house and probably won't be there in a while. I also don't want to open her tablet since it's not mines. *sigh*

You need a small (0 or 00) Philips screwdriver. There are screws under the back 2 rubber feet. Then carefully pry it open. I start by the USB port in the back and work around. Be sure you remove any USB or SD cards or you may be sorry...

Ah!! Thanks. I was wondering if there would be screws under those little rubber grooves. Next time I visit her, I'll be prepared. Thanks for that. I'll probably bump this post (3 months down the road LoL!!) if I fix it. So others can see that it is fixable. I'll take pictures of the inside too.

[Q] ASUS TF300T stuck on boot. Can anyone help?

I have searched the threads but cannot find a situation similar to mine so am posting, but apologise in advance if this has been solved before. It's a bit of a long story. About a year ago I was foolish enough to have stood on my TF300T, cracking the screen. The tablet was still working, but it would not register touch. I put it to one side and left the battery to drain. For various reasons I have just got around to replacing the screen.
I found a screen and digitiser of the correct version for my UK TF300T (version G01) and I'd thought the replacement went without any problems, although I was slightly unsure of one digitiser connection. On pressing the power button (I had pre-charged the battery) the screen came to life just as I'd left it as if coming out of sleep rather than being off for a year. It was short lived though and soon the tablet went to black and would not turn on. I thought maybe it was the digitiser connection so went back in to re-fit it. It was only then that I noticed the power switch on the logic board itself under the plastic shell. I hadn't switched it to off before (duh) so did so then, refitted the digitiser cable much more securely,switched the power back on and tried to boot, but nothing happened at all, apart from the power LED flashing orange. After some experimenting (trying to charge the tablet again etc) I found I could only boot by charging the dock and plugging the tab in the dock, but the tablet would only get as far the ASUS screen (not the 3D one, just the flat lettering), with the 'device is unlocked' message in the top left corner and stops there. I can turn it off, but can't boot into recovery at all. And that's where I am now.
Things I have tried - a different logic board from a TF300T's scrounged from eBay which also had a cracked screen (this, weirdly, seemed to have the same problem as mine), swapping various parts out from some other TF300T's (without logic boards) from eBay and contacting the device through Sandix's ADB GUI (after downloading and extracting the SDK), which registered no device.
My best guess at what's happened is that the battery on the tab itself is totally gone (as are the three other batteries I have accumulated) after a last valiant effort and either that going or me messing with the on off switch has some how corrupted the boot process. Is that possible? What do people think? I could buy a brand new logic board, but the only ones I seem to be able to find have some different brand chips on them and appear to be different versions - versions probably not compatible with my digitiser. :S
I am quite a novice here (and maybe poking around the inside of my tab wasn't a great idea, but then neither is wearing boots in the house) so any help would be greatly appreciated! Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give a detailed report. Let me know if you have any questions. Although unlocked, it is running the stock ROM.

I would make sure drivers are reinstalled properly, by removing the drivers, reboot the computer, reinstall the drivers and then reboot again.
See if that works.

I had something similar happen on a different tablet. That was one from Box.co.uk, but after trying to get it fixed under warranty (and missing the end date by 1 day), I opened it myself. When the charger was plugged in, it showed the charging LED, but it didn't actually charge it.
I don't suppose you've checked the terminals for the battery to the mainboard? On this other tablet, one had broken off. I re-soldered it on, charged it fully and it worked fine.
