Hi,
I was on a rooted Oneplus One having the TWRP recovery. I got the notification for the latest Incremental OTA ZNH2KAS254 update. I know that its not possible to install this incremental update if you are rooted and are using TWRP as your recovery. I read some of the posts and it was suggested there to unroot the phone, install the stock recovery and then try to install the OTA. I downloaded the stock cyanogen recovery and flashed it, which removed the TWRP recovery. I then unrooted my phone using the option in the SuperSU app.
Now i have an OPO which is having stock recovery and is unrooted. When i try to install this incremental update, i am not able to get through. The update goes through the installation process and ends up booting in the stock recovery with an exclamation mark on the cyanogen robot. I then decided to factory reset the OPO completely by wiping everything that was there on the phone.
Even then i am not able to install the incremental OTA and land up with the same error as mentioned above.
What am i doing wrong? Could someone please help and let me know how to get this incremental update installed? I would also like to install TWRP and root the device once i am done installing the incremental OTA.
Cheers,
Gokul
You're in the OPX section. You have OnePlus One, right?
A mod can move it?
If you are on Oxygen OS, I think you have to flash the full rom zip disponible here :
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/oxygenos-2-1-4-for-the-oneplus-one.425544/
If Cyanogen, I don't know.

Unrooting your phone won't help. You have to flash latest signed zip (if available).

Saurav,
Thanks for your message.
Since i do not have TWRP installed, i believe i would have to flash the latest signed zip using ADB. Am i right?
Secondly, would it be possible for me to flash the TWRP zip using stock recovery?
Cheers,

Yes, you can sideload latest signed zip or can even flash from stock recovery.

Just rooted? No system modifications? Reason I ask is that if you are simply rooted and haven't modified system files AND you have stock recovery installed the update will go through fine...after which you reinstall twrp and flash su.zip

I'm still on 4.4.3 with a viper rom. I'll probably have to update to 4.4.4 in order to get to 5.0.1 right? Will updating to 4.4.4 then 5.0 allow me to keep root still? Or can I just easily flash supersu.zip through adb sideload to access root again if lost?
I won't be putting lollipop on my phone until it gets Xposed support.

With custom recovery = no OTA. Anyway, you are on 4.4.4. What do you want to OTA update to?
Just wait a few days after the next OTA release and you'll find the firmware files, RUU and such here on XDA, ready to be flashed in fastboot or via dottat's wonderful .exe's. Wait a few days more and your custom rom will get an update based on the latest release.
I would never chase an OTA......

I don't necessarily want to update, but HTC/Verizon is starting to push out the OTA for Lollipop. When I had my Incredible 2 (S-OFF/CWM recovery/rooted), VZW constantly nagged me with OTA update prompts until I edited a system (build.prop maybe? I can't remember) file to trick them into thinking I already had the latest. I just don't want a repeat of that, plus I'm really not interested in updating until Lollipop has full Xposed support!

Go to Settings > Apps, swipe to All and disable HTC DM. Or, even better, freeze it in TiBu.
That should take care of any update notification.

Just flash the newest OTA in your custom recovery.
It will overwrite your recovery with stock recovery however.

already tried.
It asks me if i wanna install an untrusted zip file.
I say yes
and it says unable to verify.

If you're on a custom recovery + root, then I'm assuming you're no stranger to adb and fastboot commands. You can download the full update (not incremental) from here , unzip, and use the flash-all.sh (or .bat if you're in windows) to flash the full update. You can then flash your custom recovery and superSU after it. You'll probably want to backup your stuff before you do this!
If you're on custom recovery + root because your friend did it for you, go ask your friend! =P

In CWM or TWRP?
Hi all I just got two new security updates on my xt1550 one after the other. the update versions are as follows
24.71.2.en.03 - July, 2016 Security patch
24.201.5.en.03 - October 1st, 2016 Security Patch
Can anyone else confirm they got the security patches?? my android version is on 6.0.1 and not rooted.
Yes many people have received the security updates...
yes, me too
Yes security updates are rolling out now in India, other varients got july update in late November and October patch with us.
yes i got this too and now when it reboots, it reboots to TWRP and loops back. So i cleared cache date and was able to boot properly. But i was not able to update to that version. mobile is rooted and unlocked. Is there anyway anyone can get me that link so that i can fastboot the update?

No need to wipe recovery. Flash stock recovery on top of TWRP. It will automatically be replaced.
If he is rooted he won't be able to update. OTA updates require pure stock - stock recovery, stock kernel, and an unmodified system. This means no root, xposed, or any other changes to the system including build.prop edits.

You need not relock the bootloader. I have flashed system updates with stock recovery and unlocked bootloader.
Looks like you have correctly flashed the recovery. Once you get the red exclamation mark, keeping the volume up pressed, press the power button (I don't remember exactly, if it doesn't work, try the reverse).

No need to lock the bootloader, but if you were rooted as stated in your first post, you will the stock system and kernel. You can not update if ANY system files, kernel, or recovery are not FULL stock. Your best bet right now is to flash the stock ROM via fastboot, if you need the update.

The updater script checks the system, recovery and kernel. If they do not match what is expected (full stock), then the update will fail. I can't say it any more clearly, you need FULL STOCK, ie no modifications to system files (xposed, added or deleted system apps, build.prop edits, root, custom recovery). If you have done any of this, even one, the update will fail. Flash the stock ROM via fastboot.

So, to revert back to stock 6.0.1 from custom 7.1.1, do i need to wipe system, data, cache, etc before restoring my back up of the stock?

You should. But I think it can be done right after flashing stock ROM also.
After getting these brutal update messages every few minutes on Android 6.0 and not being to update because of root and TWRP, rather than going back to stock, I finally cracked and bit the bullet yesterday and installed Lineage. I am now on Android 7.1.2 with the April security update, and going forward new OS and security updates will be simple updates; in fact the May update as noted by the OP is due this week, and I can either install it OTA from Lineage with a press of a button, or via TWRP if I so desire . I understand others don't want to install a custom ROM for various reasons, but for me it was a no-brainer.
So I unlocked by Bootloader and Rooted my OP6, the question I have is will the OTA updates be installed without any problems or will I have to install it manually?
Also when I install twrp (I have not installed yet) how will I need to update my phone through OTA?
Sorry if this is a noob question because the last time I rooted and flashed roms the software support was over so I never had any OTA updates.
Thanks
It will download the update but it most probably will download the Full 1.4GB ZIP
Meaning it will install the full rom and not the small update package.
It will install normally to the other slot and after reboot you should be updated.
This should work just fine with TWRP because it updates your other slot within Android, not in recovery.
After update, reboot phone, then reboot to TWRP and install Magisk!
I updated while being rooted and TWRP installed. Just download the update, then reflash twrp and root and everything works fine.
So if u want update your system but don't need TWRP you can just download OTA with system updater and install it.
If you want magisk don't reboot! Open magisk and press install and install to second slot. Then reboot. You will have an updated system with working magisk!

So the only hitch to get an official incremental OTA update, is the root? Unlocked bootloader and TWRP installed doesn't cause any trouble?
If you just remove the root and then check for the update, evrything gonna be fine, am I right?
But how does it work this "slot a" "slot b"? What does it mean? After an update will your OP6 get 2 roms in the same time? The new and the previous? What happen after an update and the reboot? Have you to delete the old rom?
Thx for the patience...

If I'm not wrong, on a rooted device OTA installs a full rom. On a not-rooted phone OTA installs just the incremental update.
I only unlocked the bootloader to prepare for TRWP and root (So no TWRP and root yet) and it tells me it will download full update.

Because I was not sure I wanted root again there are always apps that even with Magisk hide won't work.
But just to make sure I prepared by unlocking bootloader so if I decide to go for TWRP and root my data and storage won't get wiped which would mean starting all over again and losing app-data.
So, if I update from a ROM rooted with TWRP, will not the user data be deleted? Should we just root again and install the TWRP?
I had rooted 5.1.5 with TWRP and Magisk. I just downloaded the full package, copied it to phone storage. Then went to system update, update locally, picked the file and it ran the update.
However after reboot and update complete I lost TWRP and root. So I went to fastboot, booted the official TWRP (fastboot boot twrp.img). Then flashed the official TWRP and Magisk for root, rebooted and all was good again.
I'm pretty sure there's an easier way of doing this but this worked for me.

Yeah probably but it has a lot of mixed reviews and this takes me 10 minutes more or so oh well. I'll rather do it like this It's not like we get a new update every week
maybe to help you all
me: 5.1.5, unlocked bootloader, unofficial TWRP from thread by wuxianlin, magisk 16.4
my procedure was to change to official twrp which can be done easily by
downloading the twrp installer from official site, put to internal storage
flash twrp official installer
still in recovery, select reboot: recovery
flash magisk
boot system
now download full 5.1.6 signed flashable zip
recovery: flash 5.1.6
reflash recovery
reboot recovery
flash magisk
boot system
now you have rooted 5.1.6 with official twrp and magisk, no wipe needed
Question is in the title.
If I unlock bootloader and root with magisk will I lose the ability to update via OTA?

assuming you didn't install twrp
So I just got my G7 today and did a quick setup during which it installed an OTA and then I went ahead and installed TWRP and Magisk. Shortly afterwards I get a notification that another OTA is available but now it won't install (as expected). Because I installed Magisk after TWRP I don't have a 'clean' boot image to rollback to in order to get the OTA - is the only option to reflash back to stock and start again but install Magisk before TWRP this time or is there another option?
