Hello everyone,
I'm stuck with a strange android behavior and I'd appreciate if anyone can suggest me how to proceed.
I’v developed an App with gcm first, now upgraded to fcm, to just send messages and notifications from a server. Everything goes well using this app with mobile connectivity or with wifi on an open network, but the devices stop to receive notifications when they are connected to a wifi behind a proxy. The proxy is of course configured on the device and they can surf on internet, read email, connect to the machine with the gcm server installed; they just don’t receive notification… and not only for my app but for all apps, like hangouts, whatsapp and gmail…
Probably google play service cannot connect with google server… but what can I do to force it?
I can manage all the network setting, I removed the firewall, all ports are open. If I connect to the normal gateway everything works, if I connect devices to this transparent proxy, notifications stop to arrive.
I’v read on forums that most users use “Drony” or they root the smartphones, unfortunately these devices are in a production environment and under warranty, I cannot install third-party app or root the devices.
In my app I don’t manage directly proxy configuration, this is a OS configuration, but is it normal that android notifications don’t work behind a proxy?

Hello...
After putting a new ROM on my phone...I'm having a weird issue. First off, I've double and triple checked my settings and they match what gmail requires and how it was set before the new ROM. secondly, all other data services (weather updates, web browsing, phone class, SMS, etc.) are working perfectly.
But if I try to send an email or manually send/receive, my phone pops out a message from my data connection that says "cannot connect: cannot connect with current connection settings. to change your connection settings, tap settings." and then provides a settings link and dismiss button. The rom used the auto config for ATT which seems to have gotten everything else working as expected, but I simply cannot send / receive email.
If i login to gmail directly from opera, everything works fine - but i cannot receive updates right away - slightly annoying.
Where it gets even weirder is the gmail java app will not download or send messages either.
Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong? Would this be a rom specific issue - or is a configuration for my phone wrong?
Thanks in advance everyone
hate to bump...but just curious if anyone else has experienced anything like this.
thanks.
I'm assuming when you typed in your Gmail address, Windows stated it found the setting and configured everything for you. The problem is Windows configures your Internet connection to be "The Internet". Deep inside the Gmail settings their is an option to change this to "MEdia Net". This may be your problem.
Go to MENU, then TOOLS, then OPTIONS, then click on GMAIL. Then click on EDIT ACCOUNT SETUP, then NEXT 4X, then ADVANCED SERVER SETTINGS. Then change THE INTERNET to MEDIANET. Then some more dones, and nexts, and finish. Hopefully this is the problem for you.
I've had similar problems and got to the point where I suspect it is something to do with ActiveSync.
I could receive emails, but not send emails, unless I deleted my account and reset it up again (not ideal). I started to realise this happened after I had connected via USB to certain connections, i.e. not a charger and not a computer, for example a USB car charger. In these situations the message would pop up asking me what I wanted to connect as: ActiveSync, External Harddrive or whatever the other option is.
It seems to me like the phone wasn't getting the right message and was then getting itself very much confused.
Deleting the account and resetting it up helped. Eventually (last weekend) I have Hard reset.
I'm also careful about which USB connections I now use.
Don't know if this provides some insight or use?
UPDATE: THis just happened to me again and I should point out that I don't use gmail, it's my own domain mail hosted by EasySpace. I suspect the problem is HTC Touch Pro though. I have been listening to music on my Touch Pro with a USB multi connector (3.5mm + power + other USB) connected. Wrote an email and it wouldn't send. Disconnected the cable, still wouldn't send, stopped all running apps (Messenger, ActiveSyn, Windows Media), restarted Messenger and did a send receive. This time it worked.
For me this is definitely a dodgy ActiveSync issue.
Additional gmail problems
I've also had email problems using GMail. I originally set up my gmail account as a pop account (I have my own domain forwarded there) and wanted it to reflect my address as my domain. It originally connected and started downloading the emails. Then the account vanished! The emails are still there and taking up the first account slot in my TF3D, but when I go to accounts it is not listed. After a hard reset I restored with PPM backup and it placed the emails back in there, but still no account listed. I also can't open the emails, I just see the envelope icon with the preview of the last message downloaded. I've since added gmail as IMAP, but also had trouble with that in not being able to send emails. I deleted the account and then added again (IMAP) to try and by-pass the auto setup the phone does for GMail, but still no luck. What's worse, it's added this addition to the 3rd little envelope icon in TF3D, so now I have 1. Non-functioning account 2. Empty 3. Current IMAP
Anyone know where this data is stored so I can at least go clear out the first 2 slots so the current account being used will be the first one in the list? Also, anyone figure out the fix for sending emails? I'll try the advanced setting change from The Internet to MediaNet and see if that works. It's rather pointless having the emailing picture phone that you can't email pictures from!
Changed 'The Internet' to MediaNet, still no go on the sending.
hi,
i am having an issue on my TytnII where i cannot get my email to download from Yahoo.
in pocket outlook, almost mediately when i click send/receive i get 'error syncronising' in bottom left hand corner then a bubble appears with 'cannot connect : cannot connect with current connection settings....'.
any idea whats causing this?
i can get web access no problems and all other comms seem to work fine. Just can't get email to work.
any help appreciated!
p.s. my phone is a UK O2 Stellar (unlocked) and i'mm on t-mobile, dunno if that makes any difference. Standard 02 ROM i think.
if you're positive that your out and inports are set correctly
and ssl and the likes are set correctly
then maybe your cellphone network may be blocking those ports
in which case you can try the same using wifi bluetooth or usb to performe
the same operations
using Wifi i can get a bit further so there is definately and issue with my email contacting the mail server via GSM.
But i think there are also issues with my setting so i will try that first, when i get it working solid through wifi i will try to sort the GSM issues.
thanks,
i have it working fine over wifi now but still having same issue with GSM.
any idea how to resolve? change ports?
i had email working fine on my old phone (hermes) using same SIM and email address.
hi,
i am still experiencing the problem listed in the initial post.
I can connect to internet and browse websites, can access mail on yahoo website, MMS and SMS both work fine but still get 'error syncronising' and 'cannot connect : cannot connect with current connection settings....' when i try to use pocket outlook to download my POP mail.
it works fine when usig WiFi so must be an issue to do with the setting that pocket outlook uses for connecting to web but i cannot see where i can change this.
any help appreciated.
all the experts on this forum who know WM inside out and noone has even a suggestion to help with this problem?
sorry if it is too simple for you, but quite simply, i don't know how to fix it!
Hmmm,
I would say you answered your own question! It just looks like your GSM network provider is blocking this ports since your email settings seem to be correct (otherwise it would not have worked via Wi-Fi either!), so, you will have a hard time finding a solution.
However, here a not-so-convenient workaround:
If you can access other (non-YAHOO) pop-email accounts, try to forward all incoming YAHOO email to that email account, then set also your outgoing messages regarding to the functioning pop email account but as reply email use the YAHOO.
Try to contact your GSM network provider's technical stuff to verify your settings / ports. If they can asure you that this ports are not blocked, well, then there is only 1 other party to contact: YAHOO themself!
If you are a paid YAHOO SUBSCRIBER and you upgraded to the pop email account at YAHOO, they might be able to walk you through. If you use only YAHOO's free email: the free service does not work with pop email clients - only via their webmail.
hi,
thanks for the suggestions.
i am fairly convinced it is nothing to do with Yahoo as i can access when using wifi so that rules them out (no?) it also confirms the pop settings etc are correct as i can send and received mail with no problems.
using GSM I can access the rest of the web and i have previously used the same sim in another WM device to access email with no problems so forbidding a change to t-mobiles policy at exactly the same time as i switched phones i think it leaves only the phone as the possible cause.
i have tried t-mobiles technical helpdesk who are still to get back to me after 3 days... i am not holding my breath.
i think it may be something to do with it being an O2 phone/ROM and that it may be trying to connect using their settings when using email? does that sound reasonable?
i will flash a new ROM in the new year when i get new satnav software to replace the dodgy copy of TomTom on the device when it was delivered. hopefully that will solve it.
Thanks for your help.
Does anyone know of any apps that allow you to send and receive text messages through your phone with your computer? I know that PDA Net has the ability but it isn't compatible with Mac OSX. I am looking for something dedicated to text messages. I know I can do this with a VNC to my phone but that kind of thing is too laggy and slow.
Thanks!
Hi,
The greatest App there is right now is smshare
You have to install this app on your Android phone, and the smshare Extension on your Chrome Browser.
Then you can type your SMS in the Chrome-Extension, and then the SMS will be sent to your phone, which then sends them as normal SMS. No Wifi hassels, and really comfortable and fast.
A new feature of smshare is that your incoming sms can be forwarded to your email account - so you don't even need to touch your phone for communication via SMS.
Another way is to use the Wifi SMS Apps.
On these kind of Apps (like for example RemoteSMS) you have to connect your phone to the same Wlan as your Computer, start the App on the Phone, and then you can log into an Webinterface with your Browser and compose the SMS there which then are sent from your phone.
The problem with smshare is that it uses a third party server so if privacy is a concern, then remotesms is much better. I use remotesms and u can actually connect via WLAN, usb or Bluetooth and it's a direct connection so no privacy concerns. Works brilliantly.
Much thanks for both of your for your replies. This is exactly what I was looking for!
SMS2PC gets my vote. Lovely simple interface!
I've noticed that when I'm using my company's wifi that Gmail has issues syncing. New emails are only fetched when I manually initiate a sync. This isn't the case when I'm at home and when I'm using 3G (Vodafone NL). It also works fine when I use K-9.
I suspect that the firewall that guards the DMZ in which wifi clients are placed is the culprit. I'd like to discuss this with the firewall admin but before doing so I'd like to understand what protocols are being used by the Gmail app. Is it TCP/UDP what source/destination ports, any higher level (layer-5 plus) information relevant? Can anyone help me?
I'm having an issue with the stock email app where I can only seem to get my emails while on wifi. Anytime I leave my house or work where I am connected to wifi, I get a message that says "Can't Sign In". If it makes any difference, I am using my Yahoo email account. I know one solution is to use the official Yahoo app, but I want to do what I can to stick with the stock email app
I saw a tip somewhere on XDA that said to change the Incoming and Outgoing server settings and this worked for a bit but the settings seem to change itself. The tip was to delete the word android from both server names, changing the Incoming server from "android.imap.mail.yahoo.com" to "imap.mail.yahoo.com" and changing the Outgoing server from "android.smtp.mail.yahoo.com" to "smtp.mail.yahoo.com"
Anyone?
In the meantime I started using the official Yahoo Mail app, but I'd like to use the stock email app if anyone could help me? Thanks
It could help you: http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=content&y=PROD_MAIL_ML&locale=en_US&id=SLN4075
EDIT
I've just tried with a Yahoo address email and the stock Email app. Everything is automatically configured. I can show you my settings if needed.
Make sure you didn't prevent background data for the app
