Note 7? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

With the note 7 just a month or so away. Wanted to see if anyone was making the jump, debating on making the jump or just flat out sticking with the 5

Although I agree with upgrading, take note that Samsung has completely locked down the bootloader for every carrier in regards to the next generation devices. Rooting is possible, but does not look good at the moment. Oddly enough, the Exynos variants appear to be making more progress. Just my two cents.

I could care less about root. I have a Note 5 now unrooted after rooting every handset I've ever owned. I have gotten the itch a few times to root but never pulled the trigger. I'm defeinitely upgrading for the sd card slot, bigger battery, better camera and more Ram. I hope with Android N they unlock the APN Settings so I can at least have my hotspot mod work. If not no biggie I'm still upgrading to the 7. I'm pretty sure someone will figure it out.

This is pretty much the same for me. The note 5 is the first phone I haven't rooted, even though I thought about it a couple times. Definitely getting the 7 when it comes out whether it can be rooted or not. It seems like the last few phones I've had development was real slow not making it worth rooting.

Same feeling here. I've rooted every device before this, but haven't really felt the need to root the Note 5. Maybe eventually, but I really can't think of anything I'll gain on this phone.

Exactly. Everything we needed root for before we can do without it. Plus I like the fact that whenever I try to use a feature it works. No FCs or freezes but just flat out works. I use Package Disabler Pro to disable any bloatware, hot spot mod for tethering and they have themes out the wazoo. It seems like root does more harm than good when before it was the other way around. I can't wait for the 7. I'm pretty sure that phone is gonna make root really unnecessary.

I will upgrade as well like others. I have rooted every smartphone I ever had including the note
5 . However I quickly discovered I really didn't
Need to root .

Same here im upgrading but not rooting not 7 will be a good phone

I'm with you guys. I've rooted every phone I've had except the LG G3, s6, note 5. But I've stopped romming since the s4. I enjoyed the stability. I have no need to root.
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

Everyone is leaving the note 5 for the note 7. There's no reason not too. I never cared about the build quality, because i always loved the removable batteries but thanks to most of you we lost it ? along with the ir blaster and sd card. But samsung is slowly bringing the them back . I wish they make the screen a tad bigger like 6inches in the same footprint as the note 5 but i doubt that happen . So maybe something new software wise which seems more logical. Once you go rooted you won't go back . i love having the options to use hotspot for free. now i can play my xbox online on lunch breaks . Samsung pay didnt support my bank and my wife get all my old phone so it was a no brainer to root .

I will be upgrading too, since am a sucker for the note line. I hope they bring something refreshing and competitive to the market, like the fast FP scanner and the dolby stuff...Hoping the iris scanner will be on par with the Microsoft Windows hello that can unlock in the dark.

I will not be upgrading to the note 7 if I do get a new device this year will most likely be a nexus device love the note 5 upgraded to the s7 hated it sold it after 2 days and kept my note 5. No root is a big no go for me love Adaway and our devs on the note 5 and love roming and playing with different tweeks to get my phone to be my phone unique lol. I would never use samsung pay or Android pay at this stage of development maybe later on but not right now so root is worth it to me plus it's android what's an open source os for if everything is locked down were not apple os android is open for development that manufacturers are slowly closing down sad to be an android fan if you ask me...

SD card is the big reason why I'm upgrading.
Sent from my SM-N920P using XDA-Developers mobile app

I really wish IR blasters would make a comeback. I really liked that feature on my LG G2 and was bummed when the flagships basically removed them after just 1 year.

I will upgrade but I really hope the Deva can root the Note 7 when it comes out.

If i had the dough to upgrade i would ( and still might put some $ from each oay check to do so) because i hear that its water resistent. I tried the Ghostek case on my note 5 and it killed the most basic function of my phone, the ability to hear people on the phone and muffled my voice so much it was only usable with ear buds or BT. Native water resistent phones are tge greatest thing now that they cane incorporate that tech into slim design. Or maybe the website i read was off base on that it will be water resistent? If some one knows its not please let me know

Yeeesssss, loft in its beauty. Feel it in your pocket.MMMMMMMMM. So good.
I bought mine on launch, and I still love. My only regret the is potential loss of tmobile, but the FCC seems to be leaning against that.
I really like it a lot. I think it's still the phone I'd choose today if I was in the market again; I've really appreciated the stock experience, especially post-2.3.3 patch, which fixed pretty much all my gripes with it.
I love it, but the only thing that I can think of to change is making the speaker audible when laid on it's back. I had a few missed calls because of this.
I love it. Started off a little bit slow, but things are starting to catch up... slowly.
I never get sick of the phone's looks. And getting the Case-Mate Pop Case made me even love it more.
Edit: Slow as in development.
I love it to death. The only way I would think of giving it up is if the deal goes through. Having a 3g phone with no 3g is lame.

Same with this guy.
my brother has one. ihave iphone 4. last week i bought one. used but almost brand new. not a single cratch with no visible gtid pattern on the matrix pentile screen. it was stunning.
i figured what the hell, i will try it for few days. if i like it, i will keep it and sell my iphone 4. if not i will return it to the store " store owner is my close friend "
so i played with it. i think its awesome. but i gave it to my brother since it was in better shape than my brothers and he sold his phone.
i use skype video calls almost daily. and i play alot of games. i figured i can live without the skype but it was a no go.
its funny how a small things can screw up big things.
all in all i think its one of the best phones in the market. and i recommend this phone over any andriod phone available right now.
unless optimus 2x will have a cracked bootloader, then i dont think any phone coming soon will top the nexus .
right now i am waiting for the xperia play. for the same reason, i play games alo :/
Interesting responses. I for one, do love mine. I don't think I could ask for more except 3g.

I don't see any reason not to like the Nexus S currently...the only drawback is lack of dual core and 4G. But no biggie to me...I can live with 3G speeds and this phone is super fast with custom rom's, kernels even without dual core.

Then you'll complain about Samsung's delay on Android X.X. Just stay on the Nexus line and wait for the 3rd Nexus Phone.
Got mine as soon as Bestbuy opened on launch day, rooted it later that day as soon as Koush posted directions. Still love the phone and wouldn't trade it for any other phone available now or that has been announced/rumored.

Are you still happy with your Nexus-S ?

I have to say I am still pretty happy with my Nexus-S 4G. I am loving the stock/vanilla Android OS, after trying many different ROM's and launchers, I always seem to go back to the "pure" launcher and style. I do have the Oxygen ROM which is the base Android OS just tweaked and stripped to be very fast with good battery life.
I was tempted to get the Sprint Galaxy S2, while it is a great phone, probably the best Android device for sale right now, it just did not seem night and day radically better than my Nexus-S. The S II still runs Gingerbread and looks so similar to my Nexus I don't see the need to get that phone right now. And my Nexus is not slow by any means. I am eagerly waiting for the reveal of the next Nexus-Three device with "Ice Cream", that would be the first to tempt me away, or at least get Ice Cream running stock on my Nexus-S.
If there is any beef with this phone, it is the radio/network, and Sprint's poor 3G service lately. Hopefully we get good news next month when the CEO of Sprint discusses the future network plans on Oct 7th.

Yeah I'm not complaining at all about it. I was running Pete's bb rom before this and his rooted stock before that. Now, I'm running miui. I thought, coming from the preference of vanilla ui, that who in the hell would want a rom that's a cross bastardized version of ios and touchwiz? I am/was under the thought that ios was very limited on what could be done with it.
Miui is really starting to grow on me. I'm almost ashamed to admit I'm getting the itch to get a new phone after my ns4g and it being the iPhone. I definitely want the nexus 3 too but those phones will probably be released very close to each other.
Unfortunately, I will have to deal with the looks and comments from my old lady, whenever I get a new phone. I will not give my ns4g to her because I see how she treats phones. I suppose one thing that would keep her quiet is if I got her an iPhone too. About 1500 for two new phones, full price, not eligible for upgrades yet. Sigh, it's only money right?
Yes.

I've had or used extensively a mt3g, epic 4g, evo 4g, evo shift 4g, Droid x, huawei ascend 2 and an iPhone 3gs and of those I like my nexus the best. However, my mother in law just got a sensation 4g and if I'm honest, I think I'd enjoy that better.

IMO, Nexus S is a piece of outdated hardware, since day 1, when it was release last year December 2010, at that very same time its brothers/cousins have been having way much better spec than it does.
the pure Android experience was not as fun as promised by the Nexus One hyped owners promised
So my next device will most definitely not be Nexus 3, which is yet another outdated antique, its SGS2 brothers/cousins has waaaaaaaaay better hardware than it does.
and we all know by now that support across Samsung devices is thriving like CM7 and all the countless of customized kernels and mods that you can find
The 2nd reason why i picked Nexus S, was simply because it was unlocked and works on AWS signal
there was nothing at the time, else i'd have most likely gone for a better phone
the lack of the SD slot is a major drawback, can't do things as i used to, i'm not having fun as i used to, all because of the missing space, the phone is just a phone right now, can't enjoy it as it ran out of space all the time, no matter how much stuff i send up to the clouds, there is never enough space for me
clouds is not cheap either if you don't have an unlimited internet for the phone
and the 3G speed is not that great to send up and down 500 meg of data whenever you feel like playing another game, or watching another movie
i'm sure this phone is more than enough or even great for most people, but i'm not most people

I personally prefer android because of the ease of customization that can be done even without rooting. iOS devices are great, don't get me wrong. I'm not an iHater, but for me and my uses they don't work as well as Android. The reason iOS is so great is that it just works. Period. From the first boot to the last, an iOS device is going to work exactly like Apple intended it to.
The Android Vs. Apple debate is much akin to the Win Vs Mac debate. Apple builds its software to work on its hardware and it does, thats the reason I buy Mac laptops; in the 6 years I've owned them I've had three issues two of which were hardware failures and one was my wife's fault (she spilled soda on the keyboard). All three of the issues were solved on the spot by Apple with a total of 5 hours and $0.00 of my time and money lost to waiting and repairs. Five hours. When my wife's Compaq laptop got its THIRD motherboard recall in TWO years it took me three hours on the phone to find out I had found out about the recall one week late and was then told it would cost me $400 dollars and 4-6 weeks to get it. I ended up having to manually recover what data I could from her hard drive and the rest was lost.
Windows machines allow the user to do much more personal customization and give them much more choice in terms of hardware but the cost of that is a much higher level of system failure. Its the same way with android. I can't begin to account for the hours I've wasted setting up and customizing my wife's and my phones only to have issues come up and its all lost. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to run terminal commands to get my phone to even boot. If I had an iOS device, that probably wouldn't happen but I'd also not feel like my phone UI looks and runs like I want it to.
In a rather long-winded and round-a-bout way, the point I'm getting at is that if you want a phone that simply works, makes calls, gets texts, so and and so forth then iPhone is a great choice. But if you want a phone that you can hack to bits and make to be a reflection of your personality then Android is you choice. That's my opinion at least.
yes and no
leagues happier than my iphone but some what less impressed by others android phones. But hey it was free.
I don't understand everyone complaining of a lack of SD slot. It mounts so you can use it as a portable drive, it also allows a much higher I/O. There's not one thing that a removable SD card would allow me to do more than what I can do now except potentially lose a tiny piece of my phone.
sent from my nexus s on a kang from simms
the internal SD doesn't have enough space, it just as simple as that
13GB fills up in a blink of an eye
I'm still happy with it for the most part. The only serious gripe I have at this point is RAM; it doesn't have enough to deal with the number of apps that like to run in the background eating up those tiny 2-5 MB chunks these days, and it doesn't always dump them from memory efficiently enough to play memory-intensive games nicely without first going in and killing processes. Also, it just came back from its second Best Buy repair, so... a little touchy hardware-wise perhaps.
I like vanilla Google and am not a huge fan of rooting and modding, though, so I'd be reluctant to move away from the Nexus line. I just hope the next one has a lot more RAM, and keeps a larger portion of it free at any given time for gaming. And is maybe less prone to needing to be fixed. >.>
RAM is not that bad, i can manage to constantly keep 75Mb free
is hard to trip enough Widgets to make that much free RAM
and make sure to not leave any app/game running in the background

The problem is when apps and games do run in the background, and there's no way to close them completely without going through task manager. Granted that's as much a complaint about the apps in question as about Android itself, but there will always be apps that don't behave properly in all respects. The OS should be able to handle them without user intervention.

Your first phone you were truly happy with?

For me, the E72 was my first complete phone, it had wifi it had GPS, it had everything i could possibly ever want... it was not until i upgraded to the samsung galaxy 1 did i feel wow, this is everything i ever wanted from a phone but was it?..
For me, to make the perfect phone, it has to be something along the lines of galaxy nexus with micro sd card with the ability of being drop proof, water proof, etc etc....
and we're getting close, but the first phone i was happy with has to be the E72 for what it had to offer and it's long battery life.
I didn't find phone satisfaction until I got the Samsung Epic Touch (sgii). It honestly does what I want it to do, fast... I came from the TP2 so it was definitely a performance jump. Great phone!

Iphone 4s-> Just works (battery life sucks tho)
So I'm waiting 4 tha S3
This is kind of a loaded question. Every time I change I'm usually happier than with what I had before. My first phone was the Motorola brick in '91 so my second phone was a mind-blowing device compared to that one. As far as all-time fave during a particular time it would have to be a Samsung Epix. All the radios, push email, 3G tethering, etc. At that time, it was da bomb. Now, it's a resistive screen, stylus-dependent POS. Funny though, I still carry one of those POS's in my bag in case I'm not near a hotspot and need quick connectivity.

It is in human nature to always be looking for the next thing, you may get the biggest baddest fastest, but guess what there is going to be one better and soon too! However, there does come a point when technology will start to outrun its self, though I am not sure when... Once quad core phones actually start making a place in the market I am sure there will be a lot of satisfied tech heads.
For me however, I have only ever owned the EVO 4g and love it, though there are some fatal flaws and obviously it is becoming dated. The EVO LTE for me will be the next "perfect" phone, despite the overly protected bootloader... http://goo.gl/3T4NK
I was pretty happy with my old RAZR, even though it was the locked-down Verizon version. It got water damaged when it sat in my pocket during a rainstorm, but it came back to life and kept working for another year or so.
Eventually I wanted to strike off on my own and get a smartphone. The first one I had was a Samsung Moment. Needless to say, I hated it. I upgraded to an Epic 4G, and it's been much nicer. I really love this phone actually, it's fast, durable, and it has a very active development community and is very easy to hack.
Despite owning a Moment, the Epic redeemed Samsung in my eyes. Their phones are much more interesting to me now because unlike HTC and Motorola, they don't lock them down and make them difficult to hack.
evo for smart phone..
startac back in the day..
My HTC DHD is pretty cool, not happy with the screen's touch response though. The search continues.
Samsung i5500, an old model, but a very solid piece of hardware and cheap!
My Samsung Captivate when it was running cm7. It was as smooth as my GSII skyrocket is now. Minus the data speeds of course.
Samsung Nexus S with CM9 on it
I would say it was the HTC Advantage X7501. It was a mobile powerhouse. 3G, wifi, GPS, tethering, 8GB on board memory with an additonal card slot, vga/svideo out, and touch screen. Also had a detachable physical keyboard and a 5 in. screen. I still have it and it's still works fine. I thought of selling it many times, but just can't let it go.
I like phones that have groundbreaking features for their time, so mine would be:
EVO 4G
and
Nokia 3300--My first qwerty and mp3 capable phone

The first phone I was ever truly satisfied with was the Evo 4g. It was as fast as any smartphone during its time and the dev community was beyond amazing. I could flash a ROM 3 times a week for months and not flash the same ROM twice. There was friendly competition (Myn's Warm vs Mikfroyo vs Koni's Elite Series III) for best ROM, there were ports (Synergy, Virus' Kingdom ROM, Mikz, Mikg, etc), there was aosp (cm7, just gingerbread w/no cm, MIUI, many cm7 kangs), there were kernels (netarchy, tiamat, msm79723's sbc charging kernel).
I got over 24 hours of battery life back then, the phone didn't lag enough for me to care and there was always something going on with that phone. It was a great community to be a part of and the phone itself was pretty *****in too.
I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and while that doesn't qualify as a phone, I've been happy as can be with it as well. It doesn't have the dev community I like oh so much, but Sixaxis compatibility + NHL Gamecenter + big giant screen = pure win for me.

[Q] Is your Nexus 5 still fresh?

By fresh, I mean would you still buy it today or would you look for something more current?
My Verizon contract is up in about a month and I'm hankering to replace my Droid RAZR MAXX ASP. It no longer feels fresh. It's running an older Jelly Bean (4.1.2) and is quite the dog. Web pages load so slowly that the screen frequently turns off before the page displays. Moto/Verizon have decided not to upgrade it further though I suspect it might benefit from performance improvements in more recent versions. :-/
My usage is low, consisting of a less than 200MB data, about 100 minutes of voice and a handful of texts typical per month. (Data will go up the month we're on vacation when I'm away from normal WiFi hot spots.) Verizon has nothing for me (New contract would involve more money for less service. However the service levels are moot if I'm not even coming close to my limits.)
For reasons of performance and availability of upgrades I want to go with a Google Experience phone. Because of my usage patterns, I'm leaning toward a month by month provider such as Ting. (They resell Sprint voice/data and voice roams to Verizon at no additional charge.) The choice today is the Nexus 5. It' been out since November of last year and the next (and perhaps last) Nexus seems likely to be released November of this year. The Nexus 5 seems like it has decent specs with 2GB RAM and a quad core processor. (But I thought the same of the Droid RAZR with 1GB RAM and dual core processor.) I'm curious what folks who own and use the Nexus 5 think about its future longevity.
Another option I have is to buy a used phone to bridge the time between Verizon cutoff and availability of the Nexus 6. I could also sell the Nexus 5 when the Nexus 6 becomes available, I suppose.
The Nexus 5 is still a perfect good phone. The GPE Galaxy S5 might arguably be "fresher," but for the money, the Nexus 5 is hard to beat.
Of course, you could stick with Verizon on month-to-month until the Nexus 6 (or whatever they call it) comes out, but if you're looking to jump today, the Nexus 5 is still a great device.

Thanks for the tip on the GPe S5. It seems to be rumored but not yet announced. The GPe S4 is $650 =8-O I'm not convinced it is that much better than the Nexus 5. Ting does list the regular S5 for $597 but that includes Samsung's bloatware (some of which I'm sure I'd find useful) and updates at their discretion.
I might ask Verizon one more time about month by month options at contract expiration. I could also use my Droid X on BYO for the time being. Maybe I could find a Verizon MVNO who could use my RAZR MAXX.
For the price, nothing beats the nexus 5.
Unless you just run stock and gravity box say....then maybe the Moto x. Tho, you need one that the boot loader can be unlocked. On Verizon, that's the Dev edition.
Comparing to phones twice the price is apples to oranges. Tho the N5 does still stand up to those phones too.
Nexus5 is worth every flash and more...
Nexus ftw!!!

That looks like a great phone, but it's not available to me. Sprint does not allow Ting to use new phones so it might be available about a year following release. Second, I really wanted to try a Google Experience phone this time (vs. one with carrier additions and lock in.) There is the possibility that this will be the basis for the next Nexus and if so, I might regret not having waited.
I've had my Nexus 5 for about a week now, so the question is moot. I suppose I could sell it and get the next Nexus when it comes out but I'm sure the N5 will drop in value at that point.
At the moment I'm half way between phones. My Droid RAZR MAXX is days away from being off contract. Battery life is still good but it is still dog slow. The N5 is amazingly fast, highlighting the difference. And I should get the next version of Kit Kat any minute now.

Seems we have come to the End for the EP

It's probably not news to everyone that Essential has thrown in the towel on the Essential Phone
https://www.droid-life.com/2018/12/28/it-looks-like-the-end-has-finally-come-to-the-essential-phone/
Sad news really ... This is the first phone I've had that I really really loved
I basically quite looking at other phones after owning this one.
Hopefully something else will come along that sparks my interest, maybe a Oneplus is in my future ?
For me, this is a sad occasion too. My Essential phone has been amazing and I don't think I've loved a phone the same way. I can toy with this thing a ton, with it being Treble compatible and pretty close to stock android. (I even watched I/O 18 live, and cheered when Essential was revealed to be on the beta list for pie.) Right now if you guys want one last fling at a rooted tweak for the Essential phone, check out this Magisk Module from the Lawnchair Launcher team, called Quickstep Switcher.
https://twitter.com/lawnchairapp/status/1078692474795769857
It switches your recents provider on a system level, allowing for launchers like Lawnchair and OnePlus Launcher to use their Pie navigation features on your device. The modded OnePlus Launcher they provided in the Telegram chat gives you iPhone X-Series fluid animations and movements. It's been a great ride y'all. See ya on the OnePlus 7 forums next year.
The PH1 is no longer for sale
but Essential is not dead yet.

It's been pretty well known that Essential has been working on a new smartphone for a couple of months. They're definitely not dead.
Sad news but...Does it mean that we won't have more monthly updates?

No they have said the updates will keep coming. And it's not as if the device will just quit now. People are such drama queens.

it's the end of an era, not really about the drama
As for them selling another phone, I have yet to see any news that confirms this.
"We are now hard at work on our next mobile product" doesn't really mean anything
some are speculating it means
But as part of that announcement, the company is also confirming something that fans had long hoped to be true: Essential is officially working on a second “mobile product,” presumably this rumored tiny phone that uses AI to answer emails and text messages for you. An Essential spokeswoman wouldn’t directly confirm to me that its “next mobile product” is a phone, but that’s what “mobile product” generally means.

I be leave are phones will continue to be updated, but it's still sad to here production has stopped.
I suspect production has been over for 6 months or more likely a year.
The way read their statement is that they are stopping current production but will launch a new "AI" phone sometime. So definitely not dead.
No phone is restocked after an year and half, I don't see issues here..
It's old tech* now, nobody would buy a phone with an 835 when phone with 855 are in the pipeline for the next weeks... nobody gives a fk when any other company stops the production of older phones.. I really don't get why in this case there are news about it!
All media always had something negative to say about this phone.. in a way that's not justified in my opinion.
*Don't get me wrong, I love it, it's the best phone I ever had. To me, that I have bought it at a very convenient price, is the only true spiritual successor to nexus 5, just much better under every aspect.. but I bought it more than 1 year ago.. No people would like to buy a one plus 5, new from one plus, today.
Is there any chance ROM development will stop soon on this phone? I'm thinking of buying this phone used due to the stock nature but if ROM development is stopping soon as well, then I'll look elsewhere

ROM development will last years on a device like this.
Your biggest issue would be missing out on 5g in the next year... But as long as you plan to upgrade in 2-3 years from now you'll be fine and not miss much.

If there is 5 g in your area.
There are many places where 5G will probably never get there.

I just bought the phone (granted I got it for free "essentially "^_^) but those specs mean nothing to me. Day to day performance and prompt updates which it looks like essential has been doing is important to me. People get WAY too caught up in these new SoC's when the originals have BARELY been tapped out and for 99% of people, they don't need more.
