Hi,
my Sony Xperia Z3's Carbon Rom acts strangely since some Weeks.
It automatically logs into the guest spot of my WLAN with the correct password
and a second device-ID.
I can log it into my main spot and also guest spot with no problem, but this second "device" always shows up.
And it's always using the same WLAN frequency as the "first" device.
It obviously does nothing than acknowlegding the router it is there, and seems to swap ACK's with it regularly, but any data transfer is handled through the "main" device.
As I'm trying to find a solution to pinpoint an attacker, I have not reflashed the device yet.
I find no information anywhere about an android RAT that is producing this sideeffect.
And even no info if it can be a bug of this custom rom.
Does anyone know what this can be?

I've installed cyanogenmod on my HD2, and almost everything works perfectly. So far I love it, exept one thing: wi-fi is really unstable. Example: If I'm looking for apps in android market, it stops loading all the time. I can see this when the logos of the apps in the list wont load, and screenshots wont come up. But if I wait about 30 seconds it will work again. This doesn't happen when I use 3G, but that will be expensive after a while. Anyone know how to fix this?
Sorry for bad english, but I hope you guys understand the problem anyway
I had the same issue... You probably have a new virgin router? Anyway, re start your wifi router and try again
No, I have a D-link DIR655
Allready tried to restart it, no difference.
No solution,anyone?

It is difficult, because i can be either caused by your phones wifi, but alot more likely by local wifi hardware.
I have the exact same problem but I'm running CMYLXGOs Stock Desire HD 1.1.7n. I've tried many routers and changing router settings. I've read that some people open up their phone and check that the WiFi antenae is properly connected. I've haven't tried that yet because I was hoping that it was something specific to the ROM I was using, but after reading your post I'm thinking of opening my phone and checking just to make sure.
I also thought that it might be a radio problem, but I haven't found any mention of my current radio causing this particular issue. If I finally decide to crack my phone open and this solves my problem I will let you know.

Hi, Same problem on HTC Legend.
I have tried different routers at different places as well, wifi isn't stable although I found rebooting your phone fixes it temporary.

My wife and I both had HD2s, and I loaded the same android software on both phones. On my phone, wifi worked perfectly. Wifi had a weird error message on my wife's phone. So weird since wifi worked fine on WM for both phones. I couldn't figure it out... tried a hundred different things including new software for both WM (new radio, the whole bit) and tried other Android ROMs. Finally, I decided to just get her a new handset. A nexus S.
Don't know if that info is helpful at all. What I think you can take from it is that some hardware may be wired wrong for wifi to work on android ROMs. It may not be a bad idea to open up the phone like the poster above recommended.
Wifi experienced tech head
Due to some builds are just about stable with 3G connection i would say its the auto IP addressing protocol not functioning in time for appropriate task at hand, usig HD2 as wifi router always works! CONCLUSION: set a static IP address from within wifi advanced options. And if you don't know how to enter or what to enter i reckon more reading and learning needs to take place before messing with a fone that worked perfectly before flashing it and ya don't know one piece of programming or instruction sets from Os to Os!
if default router is= 192.168.1.252
dynamic named server= 192.168.1.252
subnet= 255.255.255.0
static ip for HD2 can be set within range of ya router settings so if my default router is 252 at the end, by standard default your range could be from 1 - 252
depending on how many devices are on the network, choosing 89 and middle numbers will guaranty no IP conflicts!
you can use the IP app to find out what ya subnet is or use ya laptop or PC!
Wifi actually isn't a battery drain this way as it doesn't need to assign to another IP address when wifi wakes up again if fone was sleepin!
I have encountered a strange problem on a specific android device. It's an HTC M8 and it's the only device in my house with this issue. I'm hoping someone here could be kind enough to assist.
When connected to the WiFi, links in Twitter or Facebook (for example), no longer resolve to domain names. Clicking on the links almost always results in an ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED error. Some links work (say one in every ten), and the issue seems to be especially prevalent with shortened links, but not limited to them. When switching to mobile data, the issue disappears.
Other WiFi devices on the network open the exact same links just fine. There are no issues with any other android devices or PCs in the house. The router makes use of Google's DNS and this has never been a problem before. The problematic device is not rooted, nor has a custom ROM been installed.

Between my brother and myself we seem to have solved the issue. It appears that Lollipop on the HTC M8 has some trouble with resolving DNS. It might get fixed in Marshmallow, but for now we used an app called DNSSet to create a local VPN on the phone. This solves the issue.
Hi,
first of all, my apologies if i am posting this in the wrong section, i read the sticky but i consider this more a discussion rather than a request for help.
Most of you probably know the little exclamation point next to the wifi symbol in the status bar that you get since Lollipop when the network does not offer Internet connectivity.
I tried to locate the feature in the AOSP codebase but was not apt enough to come up with anything relevant, though i did log the network while disabling/enabling wifi to see what it does, and apparently it sends out a couple of DNS queries. I have yet to check it more thoroughly with Wireshark.
So in theory, from a privacy point of view, Google could trace your account/model/network anytime you connect etc.
I am quite interested in how it works exactly, and if i, for instance, could hard code my own server's address into it.
I have read some things that relate this connectivity check to a setting "global captive_portal" (or similar), but was unable to reproduce on Lollipop.
It is also quite strange that apparently no one discussed this before (from a privacy point of view).
So i would be happy to hear what you people have to say about it.
Ciao
Received today (finally! :silly my XT1650-03 Dual SIM in white/gold flavour and... only few seconds after turning it on... the first issue!
And not a minor one, a bad issue... weird that nobody have reported it before!
Turned on, boot, chose language, selected a wifi and... error during verifying connection: no Internet!
Obviously, my wifi had a good Internet connection up & running...
Tried again. Nope. Tried my old phone in hot spot mode (ever worked fine with every piece of hardware...), connected... same error!
Major problem was that on this phone the verifying step can't be bypassed (ignore is gray out...), so I was on a no way loop.
After A LOT of tries, at last it decided to bypass and go after BUT all my wifi connection still were marked as "Connection without internet" and no navigation available.
I've tested three known good wireless connections, all open, all same result.
Tried to configure them as static IP, inserted good data (it's my work, I KNOW what to insert...), same result.
The phone was connected, was pingable, has good IP, Gateway, DNS but... No internet.
My old phone and my pc, in wifi on the same network, was laughing at new arrived while surfing the Web. ..
After some Google searching (and a LOT of stupid "solutions"...) I found the good one... :fingers-crossed:
It's needed to enable Developer options and, inside, enable an option called "Use old/Lollipop DHCP client".
After that we *have to* delete the memorized wifi connections and recreate them. After that they work fine!
Weird thing is that, when I set manually the connection parameters, there shouldn't be anymore a DHCP protocol to be used...!!!
BUT probably, since it seems to need connections to be deleted before begin to work fine on them, even with manual (correct!) parameters it continues to mark them as "No internet" for some strange reason...
I think this is an issue related to Marshmallow more than Moto Z itself, BUT anyway it is a bad bug and I can't understand @google what they have "invented" this time to have such an absurd behaviour on a simple (and old) protocol as DHCP!
Obviously, connection parameters before and after the setting were exactly the same (same IP, same gateway, same DNSs), BUT with old DHCP enabled they are now of Moto Z taste...
Nobody had faced this issue before?
I didn't have this, probably just you. Haven't heard of anyone else either, so i can assume it might be your Router/WiFi AP that is old/outdated and uses redundant/old protocols (try updating the Routers Firmware, see if that helps). If that isn't the case, then i don't know (maybe someone else also has/had this problem, don't ask me).

I have to repeat myself... It's my work... I know what I'm talking about...
Up to date, four tested, three not working vs. one working with new protocol enabled. All working with old one.
DHCP is a old, simple & efficient protocol, there is no need to mess up it...!
WiFi compatibility *must* be best as possible (think about public hotspots, airport, etc... I Travel a lot and I need it!) and not limited in any way by absurd changes in well working protocols...!
When I'll be @hong Kong airport and my Moto Z eventually refused to connected WiFi, what should I do? Ask them to "upgrade router firmware"?
If you Google "marshmallow dhcp client issues" it's full of thread of people having this issue...
What they have invented is still a mistery instead...
I don't have this problem too.
I have the phone from august. It is an UK model, single sim. I have done factory reset more than 5 times and never had that problem. It is your phone with this problem.

Great post. I have that problem to with wifi, cannot establish connection. Your guidance is perfect solution.
I guess is more to Marshmallow problem (software) rather than hardware issue.

Yes, BUT... I've found MM ROMs on other devices where this doesn't happen...
Be careful that on Nougat this option is no more available...
Hello all,
This is kinda bug report, I just wonder if anyone else is experiencing this problem.
The case is:
When passing by some particular AP in the street (on my daily route to/from home/work) the AP list gets stuck and won't ever refresh until i turn off and on WiFi on my phone, then it works OK again.
Please, reply, especially if you have(had) and solved this kind of trouble!!! :crying:
I had a similar issue and in the end I just solved it by using an which triggers various tasks on your phone base on specific parameters, there a lot of the in the store.
So I set to turn the wifi on only when I am somewhere where I know there is an AP i can log in to. In all other locations the wlan get turned of automatically.

Do you mean some application that switches your WiFi On and Off basing on your location? Or do you mean that you just placed a button on your desktop to switch WiFi On and Off manually?
