I've got a screwy situation I'm desperately seeking a resolution to... simply put, we moved, and since then my Galaxy S2 (AT&T) pulls location from wifi when connected to it, everything within the phone keeps showing up that we're still back home, 30 miles away in a different state! But simply turn wifi off and then use 3G for location, and from the same spot in the new house, everything begins to work normally...
Now here's the twist - only on certain roms does this happen. Right now, I'm running MIUI 2.3.7, build MIUI-203090. Right now, on THIS rom, everything is working as it should... wifi is on, phone connected, showing all the correct information for the correct area... by changing roms, with all the same settings selected, the phone begins showing up back in the former location, and I begin to boil. I've reset the router back to factory defaults, and the same problem exists... I'm convinced it's a router issue.... I have an HTC Inspire that I had until 2 weeks ago when I made the upgrade... I broke it out and used it to test... and I can confirm that, on certain roms, even with a totally different phone, the SAME problem results because its connecting wirelessly to the same router....
Any ideas??
I assume that you are using the same router as previously?.. A router does not necessarily re-ping its location on a regular basis and so you may very well need to update your location in the skyhook database..

Never heard of this before - will try it...
If you have Google location checked it may be using the known location when it was first detected.
Change your router wifi name. Then it may not know anything except through GPS.

I tried the skyhook option, but it's not real clear - either it could take affect or could take up to 7 days - ?!??
The router's wifi name has been changed - and even went as far as to restore it back to factory defaults... STILL the same result... I'm absolutely confused.
this issue is not uncommon.. eg. my mobile hotspot shows me at home no matter where i am in the USA... a router is part of infrastructure and so is a fixed location... if not then the skyhook database would not even be required.
For any changes to take affect you will need to power cycle the router... and yes, a free service may take time to resolve itself.

p.s. nowhere anywhere on the web is a router referred to by name.. it has a unique mac address..it is this address that is tied to your location so change all you want.. but until the db is updated you will live 30 miles away

I have a Belkin n450+ router... how would I accomplish this?
I had been powered off all during the move, well over 24 hours - I'm confused about how to go about "clearing the db" -
if you have reported the location change to the skyhook server, you will have to wait for them to update their database (db..sorry)..
You have tried a reset, the only other suggestion other than to wait is to restore the factory firmware to factory settings.. you may need to update firmware after this and will need to reset and configure your network, but its an idea..

Just did a search for this problem and found this thread. Is this still the best solution?
Google uses many methods for its location, WiFi, GPS and Cell towers.
Remember that Google Street View car that travels around. It also tracks location and if it sees a WiFi signal it records the broadcasted name and location. If you use a Google service, phone or PC Google tracks the WiFi access point name. If it has a record of that name if knows your location. Otherwise it only knows your IP address is within a certain area of a city.
So, Google knows your WiFi routers name is at a particular address/location, then you move. Google doesn't know you moved so it continues thinking you're at your old address.
Changing the Routers WiFi name and a new IP address forces Google to relocate you by using GPS and other WiFi Hotspots it sees near you on your phone. It will then associate your new WiFi router name with your new location.
Basically but more complex than that.

You mean so that you can tell how long they were turned off for? Good question, there's gotta be some app that can pull up those statistics. For WiFi, you can check your battery usage chart.

Suggestions:
1. When im playing few multiplayer games like Heroes of Order and Chaos etc, i usually tend to leave my phone aside for one or two min, so with my current setup where the radios are turned off after one min, the internet might get disconnected hence me loosing the game. So if there is a feature which can check if there is data transfer then dont turn off the radios. Same goes with me downloading some files and the radios might turn off causing the download to fail. - I guess it is answered in the description, my mistake
2. Where it says turn on radios to sync/receive after a specific time period, is thee way to only switch on the 2g network to save more juice?
Questions:
1. When the radios are turned on after the specific time period to sync, do all the radios get turned on?
2. Does it already check if there is data transfer and then turn off the radios ?

1. While the screen is on, the connections are never turned off. The time "after" is time after screen off (explained in help dialog or on Play Store).
2) No, there is currently no option to do that. I wouldn't recommend it either. 2G/Edge is so slow it wouldn't even be able to connect and do anything in the brief time it has to sync.

Thats strange, i noticed yesterday when my phone was connected to the charger it turned off radios. Maybe something to do with my new ROM that i flashed. Will check it today in the night. Thanks for your response
Yes, but LeandData stop traffic also if tethering is on. In this case every time you have to switch on 3g again and reconnect your notebook.

Yes, please check for me as this could potentially be a bug. What did it turn off? It should not turn anything off if the device is charging. Also, if you connect a charger after the app has already turned off connections, it should turn them back on. Please ensure you haven't left any other similar apps running. The WiFi turning off with the screen off could also be a system option.
If you do indeed find a problem please let me know what Android version you are running. You can also check the Logcat if you filter for LeanData. Tell me what you see around the time of the problem.

I see. How are you tethering? USB or Bluetooth? If you are tethering through USB the device should be considered charging in which case it should not turn off the connections anyway. I will look into Bluetooth tethering.

As expected, i cleaned up everything on my device and flashed a new build. Installed LeanData and used the same settings, all working fine. Radios get turned on when plugged into the charger. Thanks for your time, quick response and efforts
To be honest, i have used many similar apps and never got this almost perfect feeling for any app
Wish i could donate, but running on low budget due to my job. Will donate once things settle down at my end.

MIUI rom have a application to monitor intenet connect of all application. it's great and I cannot find other app can do like this on Playstore. Bcs many app ask permission connect network althought they are no need to run. But I guest they need permission connect network to sending some information silently.

Only the paid version of dsbatterysaver includes GPS. Right now, I have tasker turn it on and off with the screen when unplugged but that means no syncing of location using GPS.
Hello fellow Z3 owners,
I have had my Z3 for 3 days, and today I found something alarming: the Wifi seems to always be on, even when I manually turn it off from the System Settings.
It appears turned off from the settings, but using an app such as WIfi Analyser, I can see the networks around me, and I don't have any error message saying I have to turn WIfi on.
While using WIfi Analyser, I can go back to the settings page, and see that the wifi really appears to be off.
Does anyone have an explanation? Could anyone try to reproduce this?

in android JB or Kitkat(IDR which) google added the feature for the wifi to "always scan" even when its off. i recreated your problem on my z3 and the exact same thing happened. go into your wifi menu, hit the soft key for options.. click advanced and then uncheck "wifi scanning always on" or whatever it says. this should also save you some battery.
Thanks for the solution! I found that as well, I still think there is a privacy issue. IMO this should be disabled by default.

That's actually a very good question. I am not a Wifi specialist, and when I saw that Wifi Analyser could see WIfi networks while my phone was saying the wifi is off, I assumed the WIfi was actually on all the time.
If I understand correctly, it's only turned on to scan surrounding Wifi networks. If it means your phone only listens, and does not speak with surrounding networks, then it should remain undetected, and we do not have any privacy issue. But if scanning means talking with surrounding networks, then it means these networks could potentially know you're around, right? Please understand that this is a question, not a conclusion.

Sure, it's always good to consider security. Without going through the code it's not possible to know, but I'd imagine it's passively listening, if all it's doing is seeing which base stations are in the area. Were it to be actively probing then it should only be giving your MAC address away, which is not normally considered a threat. I turn it off to save battery, because otherwise wifi is on all the time!

I did turn it off as well
On my S5, all saved wifi connections were visible in the wifi settings page. On the S7, it seems that only the connections within range are visible. If you go into the data usage / restrict networks, every saved wifi connection is displayed, but there is no way to delete them from there. It seems that there is no way to delete a saved wifi connection once it goes out of range. Anyone know how to do this?

Exactly the same issue here. Anyone got any workarounds (non-root)? Third party apps don't seem to work. Pretty ridiculous that you can't forget a saved network and causes a serious issue for me: I have to change my password at work and can't forget the WiFi AP before getting to the office so I'm locked out of my work account...
It is a bit annoying but I can't see how it's a problem?

The problematic are Hotel / Airport / etc. Hotspots...
When i received my S7 i "load" an backup from my old android phone... I few days earlier i returned from a long holiday trip and so the "restore-backup" created a lot of hotspots an my S7 i never never need and i'm not able to delete ....
(OK - i can start for a second trip, visit all places and delete hotspot when connected... ) <-- ironic

We use exchange authentication for WiFi at work. The phone automatically tries to connect using the old password as soon as i'm near the office. Does this three times and locks my ability to use the WiFi. This is before i have chance to see it and forget it in the WiFi settings. Such a simple omission in the UX makes this even an more annoying issue.
Yeah OK the work thing sounds a bit troublesome. I would turn off wifi before I go then turn it on when I'm ready and forget the network before it connects.

The problem with the holiday Hotspots is at least not a real problem... But I don't like this.
I would prefer a function to delete Hotspots even when I'm not connected to them...
(maybe it is small security issue, because a common SSID can be used to connect with my phone...)
Wifi Manager - choose Known network, then remove.
I reported this to Samsung support. That's the only way to get them to fix it. The more people report it, the more likely they are to fix it sooner.
As for whether it's a "problem", I suppose it's not immediately a show stopper. However, after only a couple of weeks, I accumulated a lot of hotspots that clutter up the restrict networks page. Who knows, if too many build up it could cause an problem. There is no reason for Samsung to have implemented it in this way. I've never seen a device (mobile or pc) that did this.

Thanks, but Android 6 only allows you to forget those networks that you've connected to using the same app. So you can only forget those that you connected to with WiFi Manager, not the in-built settings.

Edit: you're correct. I think root and find where file or db that stores the SSID would be the next option.
Edit 2: Get a root editor, backup /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf, then edit it to either remove the entire SSID entry, or set autojoin to 0. There may be root apps that does this.
The plain text passwords are also stored in that supplicant file.
I don't think there is any non-root solution until Samsung changes the Wifi settings to show out-of-range SSIDs. I agree that it is silly for it to not do have this feature at all.
2 solutions so far (?)

if you have a non rooted S7 there is no build in possibility to delete the saved wifi connections if you are out of range. Samsung has to fix this in my opinion.
With Marshmallow you can only delete wifi networks with the same app you created them, so third party apps like wifi manager do not work. So far there might be two solutions which work, both are far away from being perfect.
- First solution is to delete ALL network connections...and start from the beginning (1. Go to settings -> 2. Bakup and reset -> 3. Reset network settings -> 4. Follow on screen instructions)...including bluetooth etc.
- Second solution is not fine either. Take a third party app like wifi manager from Kostya on play store and list all known networks. Then set up a (fake) wifi access point with the SSID you want to delete. Once they are in range, you can delete the saved wifi connection. You have to repeat this for every SSID you want to delete.

Why is that a problem? You can't see the networks anyway. Is it just an ocd thing?

Ummm..... maybe cuz stored WiFi networks spew out a wealth of valuable information!!

can not remove!
I updated my S7 today (with Sprint) to Android 7, and they fixed this. Out-of-range WiFi networks are listed under the "Manage Networks" options and can be removed from there.
So as you may guess, i am having trouble with the qcom_rx_wakelock, and no matter how much searching i do i can't find a solution. I am hoping someone here may be able to help.
It occurs only when wifi is turned on, (not currently sure about connected vs unconnected) and is responsible for causing large drain from Android System and Android OS.
I have tried a number of proposed solutions including: clean rom install (sultan's CM13 if it matters), changing radio, ensuring wifi scanning is turned off, and applying an iptables custom script in droid wall.
None of this has worked.
My knowledge of the wakelock is that it is to do with wifi: 1 hypothesis is it relates to broadcast/multicast pings constantly waking the phone, 2nd hypothesis is that it is to do with being on a large scale wifi network with unusual security (i am at uni). One person suggested (in a thread that i can no longer find) that a dev solved it by changing the wifi drivers in his kernel, but i cant do this unless i change kernel i guess?

Get Greenify and ForceDoze from the Play Store. ForceDoze doesn't need any special settings, just enable it. With Greenify, go in and select apps that use data connectivity. This should minimize wifi wakelock.

I tried that and it made little/no difference, also tried amplify, but qcom_rx_wakelock is not listed. With regards to dose I use aggressive dose, I think this is the same? But it did not make any difference.

If you are having issues with just one particular wifi network, that is likely DHCP/dynamic IP related. There are reports of issues with certain wifi routers that are using dynamic IP addresses causing DHCP queries to constantly wake the device. The only known work-around is to set a static IP address or use a different router.

So, you could try setting the phone's ip to a static ip and see if this minimizes the issue.
Edit: Forgot you were on university's wifi, may not be able to set a static ip, unless you set the last 3 numbers to a very high number. Ex: 192.168.1.900, if the router(s) are set up to assign that high.

Ok, thanks! I have just come home today so will see if it stops on my home wifi, but will be back in uni on monday so will check the static IP idea then and report back, would your example address be appropriate, or do i need a more specific address?

The above ip is just an example.
Go to settings > wifi > 3 dots in upper right > advanced. now scroll all the way down and see what your ip is currently and write it down.
Go back to main wifi menu and long press on the connected wifi and choose modify network
Expand advanced options > tap ip settings > choose static > enter in the same ip you wrote down or change the last 3 digits and save
Note: when you tap on the box to enter ip, an ip will already be showing, just start typing and it will disappear.

Hi, this was quite some time back so i don't remember all the details of when exactly the problem stopped, but i don't have the issue any more. The only things to have changed are that i am now on jgcaaps CM14 as opposed to sultan, and perhaps the uni had changes things on their end? i don't know.
If you are having the same issue then try the things i mention in the first post, and the solution offered in this thread, and if that does not work then maybe change ROM/Kernel?
I'm afraid that is about all the help i can give

Mine was a hardware issue.
You can try to flash complete stock firmware "this is different" than downloading a Rom and flashing via TWRP.
