[GUIDE] Easy way to update a rooted phone without losing data using FlashFire

Hello!
A lot of us have already rooted our phone however when it comes to then updating firmware it can be a pain where you have to re-root your device and maybe lose your settings and data.
However, I found a way through Chainfire’s brilliant app FlashFire that it can be done without using TWRP, it maintains root and you don’t lose data.
Steps:
1. You need to find the firmware you want. You can either get it directly from www.sammobile.com or you can use this handy tool which downloads it a lot quicker:

2. You will need to download FlashFire from here:

I have also found that if you root and just use Chainfire’s Autoroot only then you do not need to even install TWRP as FlashFire allows you to flash without wiping!
This is how I installed the xposed framework – did it through FlashFire and had not formatted my data through TWRP.
All thanks to Chainfire for these great programs.

Essentially yes with the advantage that you don't need to go into TWRP and you don't need to wipe data when rooting.
Also, it maintains root so you don't need to root again.

Hello, I'd like to try updating my S7 Edge.
I have downloaded the firmware from sammobile.com. I have also installed the FlashFire, selected "Flash Firmware Package" and choose the firmware zip (containing 5 md5 files). Once the check was done, I got this screen, yet I am confused if I should also mark the "Modem Firmware" as it is currently unchecked and says "protected partition".

Thank you. I did as you say. The process was ok with info everything proceeded and phone restarted ok.
Unfortunately when looking at the phone settings, nothing has changed (meaning the versions/numbers) even though I am 100% sure I have downloaded the latest update which was "at least" suppose to update the security to March (I am still on Feb one). Weird.

You did not need to wipe any of those in that image.
Have you extracted the file yet after downloading?

The above poster said otherwise it won't upgrade? Tried extracting but got error. Should it be a .enc4 file? Never seen that before.

I updated yesterday to the latest APD1 version using FlashFire and did not wipe system.
Can you take a screenshot of what the files are after extraction?

Ah right - you need to use the Sam firmware tool to decrypt that file! Then it will give you something to extract.

Rooted with ODIN, how to get a working TWRP now?

So.. I recently got the 930F and rooted successful with odin, but my question is now, how do I successfully flash a working TWRP without having all the issues ppl describe below the twrp thread for sgs7?

after flashing TWRP with odin, enter your new recovery.
Wipe everything, then flash the rest of the files. You won't be able to boot otherwise.

You must in Odin remove the hook at autoreboot.
And then manually switch off the mobile phone with "Home-Vol--Power", then start with "Home-Vol+-Power" and wait until the TWRP screen comes and then let go.

But I didnt flash TWRP yet, cuz I used the CF-Root method by Chainfire, just rooted with odin and got supersu installed, i cant even boot into a recovery? my phone just starts normally, doesnt samsung have a normal recovery?
can I just re-root with a method with TWRP included without worries or am I gonna brick my phone?

I did the same thing... used CF-Auto-Root to root my S7 and noticed that I didn't have TWRP. So I just downloaded TWRP Manager from the Play Store and used that to flash TWRP to Recovery. It worked perfectly as far as I can tell, no need to wipe anything.
Unless I've missed something?

The full wipe will disable data & sd encryption, so you will not face any problem while flashing roms & kernals, or creating twrp backup.

I don't know if I'm too late, but this is what I did and it was the easiest way to get TWRP.
Go to the Play Store and download 'TWRP Manager App', when on there hit 'Install TWRP', look for the SG7 type for TWRP and choose the latest datedTWRP (People tend to get Recovery is not seandroid enforcing error because they use an out-of-date recovery image).
It will say there was an error flashing recovery and give the option to Reboot or Reboot Later, but it actually has managed to get TWRP onto your phone so just reboot there and then.
Boom you have TWRP; remember the first thing to do is Format Data.

Format Data after TWRP Installation because our S7 phone has dm-verity and you will not be able to flash zips and ROMs properly. Formatting will get rid of that verity encryption.
Another reason why to format data after TWRP installation is because as this method does not fully get rid of stock recovery and is left dormant, so formatting the data will let TWRP read your Data.

Nope. That is not part of the Data partition so the format shouldn't affect - IMEI No. is part of the EFS partition.
If you do come with any problems though, quote me and I'm here to help. But believe I'm telling you what even I did and I'm running ROMS and shiz now.

2. 7Zip Compression Utility:
Download and install on your PC. I use this as it gives the maximum ultra level compression. See Downloads below.
PROCEDURE:
1. Download and extract the TWRP.7z using 7Zip.
2. Place the TWRP folder it in the root directory of your INTERNAL STORAGE.
2. Just reboot TWRP once and choose Restore and then choose this: athene_93-14_boot
3. Swipe to restore.
NOTE: As a general recommendation for all zip installations and backup/restore using twrp, Wipe Cache and ART Cache before you Reboot to System.

As far as I can understand, this file should be flashed (restored) after restoring my TWRP back up of nougat stock rom taken in January-2017. Currently I am on RR-MM.

For OTA updates to work, you'd need a stock recovery on your device too; TWRP is a no go. Once you've restored your TWRP backup of your Nougat stock ROM (which hopefully may have the stock boot still), you can flash the stock recovery linked here https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/how-to-ota-rooting-nougat-npj-25-93-14-t3601747
I imagine the easiest option is to flash the recovery in fastboot (same as you did with TWRP) using 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img', then rebooting into recovery.
I think, though I've not tried it with a stock recovery, that you should be able to flash the recovery image in TWRP:
tap Install in the TWRP menu
Select 'install image's
Find your stock recovery image and select
Choose recovery as the image type
Flash and reboot to recovery.
Then, provided your system has a stock kernel, no modifications to your system and a stock recovery (bootloader doesn't matter), you should be able to update via OTA.

I had flashed SuperSU on Nougat stock ROM, so stock boot might be affected. Am I right?
In short, I want to sell the device, so I want to return to stock.

You could have directly flashed the latest March 1 Security firmware via fastboot and lock your bootloader too.

Shouldn't create any such issues. Anyways, you can make an entire backup of the fsg and other partitions in twrp.
Yes, your data will be wiped though.

Update received - flashing via TWRP?

I just received the update concerning 60fps HD-Video etc. I use TWRP so the update can't be installed by itself. So I have two questions:
A
Where do I find the update file. I looked around a lot but couldn't locate it.
B
Once found, can I just flash it with TWRP?

twrp will install the ota zip but it wont install the firmware.zip inside, you have to extract & manually install from download mode

grrr.... I tried following your suggestions, but recieved error 7 in TWRP. Can you help me in the right direction?

list your steps your using to install the ota via twrp....personally, I let the system initiate the install (booted into OS) as if I was 100% stock, once twrp loads, it automatically installs except for the firmware.zip

OK, I am a Noob to the HTC world. I am used to easy flashing/rooting/etc. on Nexus devices.
TWRP doesn't do anything after accepting the ota. When I try to install the OTA via TWRP I receive Error 7. I worked my way through a lot of guides here on XDA concerning manual OTA installing. One thing I tried was flashing back to stock recovery which I found in the firmware.zip of the OTA in bootloader mode. That failed also ("FAILED (remote: not allowed on PRODUCTION device).
Edit: The device has obviously an unlocked bootloader, s-on, rooted via magisk and is a DGLU device, software number 1.16.400.5

Are you on an Untouched System Image? Completely stock ROM? While it is great we can flash the OTA in TWRP, the system stills needs to be stock, and of course will still have to fastboot firmware.

Yes, everything is stock.
I managed to flash the stock recovery now. I didn't remember to use the download mode /sorry. Then Then I checked for the ota again, downloaded it and tried to apply but I landed in the stock recovery with the red exclamation mark and then nothing happened.

Same result unfortunately. TWRP hands out Error 7 and "system partition has unexpected contents" or something like that although I didn't do any tinkering with the stock rom. I flashed Magisk and did a backup before and that was all.

Only thing I would say is start fresh. Backup all the data for your apps first. Flash the RUU, Take the OTA and reinstall all your apps.

Thanks again - seems to have worked. It will be interesting to see which problems occur with the Android Oreo update which was announced till the end of the year by HTC

Error on update to 11.0.12.12.KB05AA

I'm trying to update from 11.0.11.11 to 11.0.12.12 incremental update from oxygen updater and having this error:
"Fail on install system update" on 1% progress bar.
Try from system OTA and same error occur.
Somebody try and it work?

If you are rooted and/or have TWRP installed, then you need to restore the stock boot and/or recovery images before starting the update.

Then I will lose root access?

Not if you do it properly.
If you're using TWRP, then you'll have to restore the stock recovery.
If you're rooted then you can restore the stock boot using Magisk>Uninstall Magisk>Restore images but don't reboot or you'll lose root.
Then download and install the incremental update manually. Then install Magisk to the inactive slot and reboot.

1) Update software but DO NOT REBOOT
2) Open Magisk > tap install > tap Install to inactive slot > NOW reboot.
Make sure you disable any and all modules first. No need to uninstall, just disable them. Mainly just a precaution. Possibly remove security from the lockscreen too for good measure.
I lost root the other day actually forgetting to properly install Magisk before rebooting and now I have to buy a laptop just to root again.

since i did it manually and ended up with no boot.img backup from magisk, i had to manually extract boot.img from my last ota 11.0.11.11.KB05AA and reflash it through fastboot. then it let me update and i rerooted.

I get the notification but can't even try it because when i tap on it, it does nothing.

I managed to install the update, I used oxygen updater to download the update, used restore images option in magisk, installed update (DID NOT REBOOT), used install to inactive slot in magisk, then rebooted.
Seems like it all went well.

Use payload dumper to get a copy of the .11 recovery.

What don't you understand in post #5? You said you're rooted. So post #5 tells you what to do.

Sorry Bill, I get it all now. I just have to do as You wrote:
1) restore the stock boot using Magisk>Uninstall Magisk>Restore images but don't reboot or you'll lose root
2) install update manually, System update>Gear icon (local upgrade)
3) install Magisk to the inactive slot and reboot
Last question, where or how to download update manually?

Ah, well that's tricky if it's not available from OnePlus or the XDA rom thread. I believe Oxygen updater app will give you the rom also, but I've never used it.
Edit: just read your post again and I'm confused: what rom exactly are you looking for?
