[Q][Solved] NE5 Update with Philz Recovery and SuperSU? (Not Towelroot)

So I saw here that the NE5 update was out, and I want to install it. However, obviously I can't do an OTA update due to it being a "modified device." I am running Philz Recovery and root from flashing SuperSU.zip.
Is there any way to update manually, without losing root (permanently), recovery, or wiping all my data? I know that I could always restore the stock recovery and firmware via ODIN, but that would get rid of everything, including my data.
(Side question: What exactly does the NE5 update add? I know it's another build of 4.4.2 but what features?)

SOLVED: Just went the long route with wiping and installing the updated NE5 firmware via ODIN. Flashed Philz recovery and SuperSU.
Admins/Mods feel free to delete.

The NE5 file is already deodexed and rooted. Therefore, you don't lose root. You get Wi-Fi calling feature with this updated. And, I believe it's an update to the modem.

Remember: You will lose all data. So it's better if you do a backup of your data using Titanium or alike to get the data back.

Will do. So this keeps PhilZ? And this is the update after ND2, making it the most recent? Sorry for all the noob questions, I've never had this problem with my Galaxy Nexus, Droid, or Motorola Xoom.

If it takes you back to full stock then you can re-root using the same method you rooted the first time and it will root just fine.

Yes, that would be a good idea. PhilZ has a special feature in the factory reset to wipe out everything for installing a new rom. Use that feature and you're good to go.

Dm-verity verification failure HELP

I'm hoping someone can help. i have looked in the forums but can't get an solid advice, recently got my galaxy s7 rooted it using cf auto root, i then downloaded latest firmware update for my device from sammobile, used odin to install but it failed and i can't even factory reset my phone as it says Dm-verity verification failure. any help would be great

Download dm-verity and force encryption disabler.
Without exiting TWRP, transfer no-verity-opt-encrypt.zip to your device over MTP* and flash it using [Install] in TWRP.

If you do the steps you will be able to restore to stock with kies or smartwatch or odin
or flash a rom once u reboot back to twrp

Should i flash the Dm-verity disabler? And I'm already on the stock do you mean latest firmware/ota?

1st off why would u want to do that.
this is what you need to do : CF-AUTO / TWRP / dm-verity / flash custom rom.
If you want a stock rom with root then you need to do everything but flash a custom rom
any time a ota update is forced you will be unrooted, your best best is to do what what i just said

Guys I am in need of help. I did not fully understand step 10 and just skipped originally. I did notice I could not wipe anything but thought I would be fine so I just dirty flashed custom ROM assuming wipe would work afterwards and I can clean install after.
I am obviously stuck now with 0MB internal storage shown along with no access to phone since it says upon boot that verification has failed and that I need to reset my phone.
Now, I do have important photos/datas which I do not want to lose... I did hear other guys restored their nandroid backup and were fine.
My question is, is there any way for me to access and back up my internal data somehow? I did hear something like flashing a stock firmware via Odin without the cache inside. Could someone confirm that this would work please? Would really appreciate a response. Thanks guys.

But TWRP would not allow me to flash because it said it could not mount storage.

6.0.1 ota with stock rooted 6.0

My v10 downloaded an OTA , which im assuming is 6.0
1. Im rooted on stock 6.0 and unlocked boot loader. Will the OTA work without messing up anything ? Ill have to root again im sure, just want some info before i pull the trigger.

I don't think the update will even proceed being that you're on a rooted ROM. I have that notification too, and i just don't know how to turn it off.

I to am rooted,unlockboot and stock rom. I don't feel like taking a chance. So I used titanium backup to freeze the software update and in the drop down notification if you press it, it's a notification from Google play services if you block it in apps it will disappear from your drop down. I also deleted the update zip in the cache folder.I used es file explorer ,device/cache/update

Okay, I'm assuming you are on H90120e (system version). There is a root exploit for the H90120j update. You just do the following:
Make a backup of your apps and settings
Flash your phone to the new update (H90120j)?
Take a look at either one of these threads to root your device again:

I am in this same situation. On stock rom with root and twrp. I want to update to the new update, but do not want to loose all my apps, settings, etc.
Question is, how to do the initial update before having to re-root again?
How do we flash the phone with the new update?

Why can't you flash the phone that is already rooted and has TWRP?
All you are doing is opening the LGUP tool and flashing the new H90120j .kdz file using the "refurbish" option then flashing the H90120j .tot file that has TWRP using the "update" option which will flash the phone regardless of what is running on your phone. The guides on the first link explain that. I believe your concern is keeping all of your settings and apps. Look up Titanium backup, it works for me.

Do I have to use LGUP to install the update or can I click install on the dropdown of my phone?
I'm on stock MM 6.0 (H90120e) Rooted and I will not have access to my main PC for another week as I'm traveling.

There's a guide in general that tells how to do all this. In fact jun19inf WROTE it.
In a nutshell, do a twrp backup.
Upgrade to 20j by flashing the stock 20j kbz.
Enable usb debugging and oem unlock
flash tot that has twrp in it.
Now you can go into twrp and 1) root via supersu 2) restore ONLY data from your twrp backup taken previously to get your apps etc back. Alternatively Titanium Backup will also do just fine.

If all is you have is root, you should be able to unroot in the SuperSU settings, and then let the update install. But if you have TWRP, then I can't see any way to do the update without using a PC to flash your phone back to stock ROM and recovery. Although you may check the dev. section to see if Eliminator has a flashable ROM to bring you up to date.

Hi all. I just got my factory warranty back and I attempted to root it. Everything went as it should, until just after the install finished. Instead of rebooting normally, it now will only reboot into TWRP. Once there, when I try to flash a custom ROM (in this case, Bliss, but I don't think it matters, I get an error message that says the zip file is corrupt. Then, while still in recovery, when I tried to wipe everything except the sd card, it says mkfs.fat process ended with error. I then powered down and attempted the factory reset. I scrolled down on both screens and it did not say anything about any errors, so I assumed it took. However, it reboots right back into TWRP recovery. It also boots right to TWRP recovery when I try to boot normally. Of course, adb does not recognize the phone in any mode that I can get into (fastboot/recovery/download), so, I can't use LG Bridge to reflash the original firmware. Does anybody have any ideas for a fix? I know that this replacement phone had 6.0 on it. I thought I did everything to a t? TIA...

Did you select refurbish or upgrade?
I believe you need to select upgrade when flashing or you get stuck in TWRP

Thanks so much for your reply, I was about to flash it to downgrade my V10 from V20L to V20J i even downloaded the files for it Phew....
Okay, I have searched most of the rootings are V20J i have not found a method for rooting and twrp for V20L software update.

[Question]Updating rooted phone without messing up the phone?

TL-DR; I rooted my phone, and want to update with minimal loss of data.
Sorry for this newbie question but I really couldn't figure out everything and wanted to confirm before proceeding.
I have MHA-L29C185B138 and rooted step-by-step via the instructions on this link:

I want to update. What should I do? I isntalled Firmware Finder and downloaded MHA-L29C185B172 FULLOTA-MF. (downloaded all 3 files)
I couldn't find a complete tutorial for rooted roms. Read different and partial recommendations on different threads. Somewhere I read that I need to restore my boot and recovery partition before update. I backed my boot partition as it was a step in rooting guide but I didn't back up my recovery partition.
So could you please point me a beginner friendly guide that explains step by step updating rooted mate 9?

Updating and keeping root is basically not possible, as far as I know.
Regardless of installation method, your phone will be re-locked and wiped when new firmware is installed on a rooted phone.

Same question from me as well. I rooted using the method in the link and I wanted to update to C185B172. No idea what's the safe proof way. As this is my daily driver and only phone I can't risk messing with it.

Whenever you update you have to start all over again with the same process you originally rooted with. Like @duraaraa said your bootloader gets locked back down and your recovery gets flashed to stock. So you have to unlock bootloader, then install TWRP, format your data so that you're unencrypted and flash the public then HW data files for the specific firmware you updated to. Basically follow the steps in the root method you initially used. This has to be done everytime

Yes sir. But remember if you're rooted with TWRP you will have to flash stock recovery first before you can even think about updating or taking an OTA otherwise​ it will fail.

Thanks for clarifying but the original question of OP hasn't been answered yet. Where to get the recovery.img from?
I downloaded the full package from firmware finder and extracted everything with 7zip, I found 2 different recovery files with same file size but different content in it.
recovery_a.img and recovery2_a.img
Which one should I use ?

Sorry about that, you want to use the RECOVERY.img not recovery2. You fastboot that img and you will have stick recovery, and it will place it in the correct spot so need to worry about where you would need to flash it to. Hope that helps

[GUIDE] Dirty update: stay stock, rooted, unencrypted and RETAIN ALL YOUR DATA

I've wrote it in many thread and I report here for users that want:
stay stock and updated
root (with Magisk)
unencrypted
never lose data and configuration
Here's my procedure, I'm using it since since I bought my S8 exynos (jun 2017), never had a problem, never lost a single bit of my data. And I don't know any alternative until now.
G950FXXU4DSDA (pie) tested​
I assume you have:
unencrypted device
oem unlock option checked (never uncheck it)
stock rom: any system mod is ok, but you'll lose it
What you need:
last odin (download here)
last stock rom for your country (download here)
last twrp on your exynos device (download here)
last Magisk zip on your device (download here)
Here's the steps:
if you haven't did before, create a magisk config file executing this two command on a shell (this file remain until you clean /data partition):

echo KEEPVERITY=false>>/data/.magisk;
echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=false>>/data/.magisk;
extract the rom and delete CSC_OXM_G950Fxxx (you don't need it, this file do the factory reset we don't want)
reboot you phone in download mode (boot with voldown+power+bixby)
connect your phone (you already have the driver, right?)
select all files in odin
uncheck auto-reboot option
press start
at the end manually restart the phone with voldown+power
the phone will boot in stock recovery and complete the installation ("Installing system update..." and "Erasing...")
keep attention because when rebooting you have to put your finger on voldown+power+bixby to return in download mode (if system boot your data partition will be encrypted)
in odin select TWRP file in AP slot
check auto-reboot option
put your finger on volup+power+bixby and keep there
press start
after a while you'll be in TWRP and you can relase the finger
flash Magisk
reboot in system
Then you can do any other mod you wan't, my favourites here.
I wrote this thread because all the guides I found skip the important (and tricky) 9-10 step and my tests results in:
interrupted csc install (twrp tried to execute a script producing "Error installing zip file 'CACHE:recovery/sec_omc.zip'")
empty CSC (Phone Info app) and no /system/omc folder
phone works well, but i'm not sure I was using VoLTE because I didn't see the icon
dial codes aren't working
korean operator "KT" voice in settings

Anyone else tried this method? Hoping to give it a try later this week when I have some time should something go wrong

so on s8 works too. nice. I've been doing this on my S7 edge every FW update. dirty flash, then root then xposed. So I hope this trick works in my S8 too.

this way works like an ota for my experience, not a single issue in one year of updates

Can i root in your way? Im on CRD7 all stock, unroted.

if you've never modify the phone, you're encrypted
if you,re encrypted, you need to format your data partition to get root permission (for what I know is not possible / not safe to stay encrypted)
you can follow my guide adding a format data step before flashing supersu, but the phone will be factory reset

so after doing this i'll still get ota updates and i can install them fine plus having the root privileges ?

No, I've never tried ti install otas (I expect it will fail).
To stay updated you have to repeat the procedure whit the new stock image, usually released before the ota.

I still have the stock rom and rooted with magisk. But in twrp I can not mount the data partition. Is it because it's still encrypted ?

... that's what I assume but it`s strange because you should be decrypted already after formatting data installing twrp, magisc etc. ...
