Rooting and installing ROMS without a functional power button? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

Hi there,
So, in short, my power button does not work. I can get into download mode and recovery, but can't do anything in recovery due to the power button. I recently switched providers and want to get rid of the tmobile bloatware and was wondering if I am still able to root and install roms without the power button?
THank you!

Have you, maybe, used the touch screen instead? If you can get to Recovery and etc, the touch should work fine in recovery unless you have some weird version where it doesn't?

I've never rooted my phone or anything, so the only recovery I have is refular. I can't use touch screen on that one, but is it possible on twrp?

Yeah, as far as I'm aware/remember the power button isn't needed in the Rooting and recovery process, once you get TWRP on though it does have touch support so you'd be good on that part.

It's been a while since I've rooted the note 5 so I could be remembering incorrectly but ADB should be able to work without the power button.

Bricked Nexus S

Hey, i was having trouble with a reoccurring issue with my nexus s: the search button would fire on it own making it almost impossible to use my phone. The nexus was rooted and had clockworkmod installed, so i went ahead and flashed a 2.3.4 version of gingerbread. after the flash was complete, the phone would not turn on whatsoever. not even a boot logo, the screen is just black. cannot even get it into recovery mode.
help would be much appreciated.

kevin, thanks, im unable to turn the phone on whatsoever. not even able to get into the bootloader
Can you adb or fastboot it or is it completely gone?

You have to be pretty unlucky to REALLY brick one of those, assuming you took the proper steps when first rooting it. Nandroid backup + EFS backup = almost bulletproof.

So you don't see any Google logo when you turn it on? Don't get any vibration either?
Could be the BGA failing. That's one of the most common physical problem for the Nexus S, with the power button failure and the softkeys starting to active like they were possessed.

No I'm unable to do anything, can't even get my computer to recognize the phone, I'm beggining to lose hope I feel like I've tried everything. No boot loader, no recovery, just a blank screen with no response whatsoever. I believe I may have flashed an incorrect rom and corrupter the boot loader or something along those lines, at least thats what
my friend believes
Thanks

Bricked

Just picked up my G3, rooted and unlocked bootloader as soon as i got home. Downloaded one of the jelly bean roms and cwm, did a backup then flashed the rom. Everything looked fine but the screen went dark after the boot animation then nothing. Wont power up or reset using the power home volume combo. What the heck do i do now, thanks for any help.
Might be a stupid question, but have you pulled the battery?
Be more specific.
VZW GALAXY S 3 4G LTE
Do YOUR homework first
How about reading all the threads about unbricking. It certainly seems you did not read all the threads about rooting the phone. Do that too.
Finally, and I know this is not that helpful. Don't screw with a new phone. Use it at least for a month to make sure there are no problems with it.
That being said, there is plenty of information about how to handle your problem here in xda. Read all that and try what has already been posted before asking people to solve your self inflicted problem.
BTW when you do ask for help specify exactly what you did, with what script. I.E. don't ask someone to solve your problem without you taking the time to be very specific about how you got there.
pull the battery and go into recovery or odin and fix it.
Dead battery?

Skubacb - Don't be a douche buddy. If you do not have any thing to add then shut the **** up.
With that being said I have been rooting phones for years, never had an issue when I couldn't get the phone to at least go into recovery. The phone is dead. Battery was fully charged and I have done a battery pull. It is a Verizon G3. I have read the unbrick articles but none explain if the phone will not boot into recovery. If someone could could just point me in the correct direction I would greatly appreciate it.
How did you actually do the flash? Odin? Some other way? As noted, more details are needed.
I flashed the new rom using Rom manager, went in to revovery and flashed it

I don't believe rom manager is supported for our phone yet. U need to flash straight from recovery. That said I'm sorry I'm not sure where u go from here.

If you can't get into either recovery , or download mode you maybe SOL. However I would take this to IRC and see if someone can help on there. #verizons3 channel.
If the phone is under warranty, one other alternate solution is to take it into a VZW store and say it won't start. Of course I'd only go that route if I couldn't get it going any other way. On the plus side, your could at least confirm that battery didn't die on you.
Looks like you forgot to flash the insecure bootloader, buddy.

I'm gonna go with this one (possibly). Did you unlock the phone? Sorry, did you say it won't boot into anything? Download/Odin mode? Recovery? Anything at all when you do the vol up/down, home key, and power button?
Idk if this would help but I'd order a downloader jig off ebay for a couple dollars and use that to see if it'll boot to recovery

I went to turn on my Verizon SGS3 on this morning and nothing happened. I have not even rooted it yet. It was charged when I turned it off 5 minutes before that and even did a battery swap. Phone is completely dead. Will not turn on. I have had it since it first came out, so I called Verizon and they are over-nighting me a "like-new" one. I hope I don't hear more of these stories.

I had a similar issue. If you do the volume/home/power combo (try both volume buttons separately, i forgot which one worked) and hold them through the initial Samsung logo it should put you into download mode, where you can Odin back to stock. I used PureMotive's Unbrick method in the Dev section (I think) and it took all of 20 min. Just make sure to follow the directions carefully.

All hardware keys not working

I have a MT4GS from a friend at home and the keys don't work anymore. Strangely enough they do work but only in bootloader; not in recovery or ROM. I did a restore with the PG59IMG.zip, but problem is still there.
Does anyone have a clue or idea about what to do now? My friend is very happy with this phone and has no money for a new one.

This very well may not work considering your description of the issue and the things you've tried but Blue6IX extracted the stock keyboard layout and created a flashable .zip file to take a person back to stock after trying one of his custom ones. If you'd like to give it a try, it's located HERE as the last entry to the first group. Hope it works for you.

I saw this post Clockworkmod 6.0.0.0. It will make it possible to flash stuff cause it has touch but the files cant be found when i want to download it!

That recovery was pulled because it was bricking devices. You don't want it. I don't know if the dev is working on it anymore.

There's no fix for the hardware keys not working. Keep on your your rooted rom. Get Button Savior from the market. Or send it to T-Mo/HTC.

Hi! By saying hardware keys does that include your hardware qwerty keyboard? Also you said keys work in bootloader but on bootloader mode only volume keys & power button are used so is volume keys & power button working while on ROM?
If what your talking is the hardware keys below the touch screen(home, menu, back, sensor & genius) then most probably you got a broken ribbon/flex cable send it for repairs if that's the case cause it needs to be replaced.
In ROM and recovery nothing works for as far as I can see. No qwerty, power, volume and frontkeys. Only in bootloader it responds to power and volume Keys.
That's the strange part, they do work but maybe it's driver/software related?

Ok as you said on your first post you already flashed a complete stock ROM right? So this can't be a software problem since flashing PG59IMG.zip basically replaces everything in the phone.
Try booting the phone without the sdcard or try with another battery.
Probably there's something on your sd card that's causing the phone to be unstable or your battery can't provide enough power to run the keyboard.
It's not the sd-card since I used a brand new, formatted one. That's also needed if you do a PG59IMG.zip restore. Only thing on the sd is that file, no other files/folders. Could be battery, but it'll take some work. Thx for the help.

I have 3 doubleshots, one is completely 100% hardware bricked. It started just like your phone is acting up. Only in the bootloader vol +/- and power worked. I managed to get this device s-off, and rooted. Used button savior to be able to navigate. Then touch screen stopped working about a week later, and I have a doubleshot paper weight.

My phone did the EXACT same thing!!!!!!! Just about a month ago, it was very annoying. I tinkered and tinkered and nothing. so i reverted to stock with the PG591IMG and s-on and called tMo for an exchange. They sent me a replacement in 3 days (albeit the replacement is giving me a heck of a time getting camera and headphones to work) but i think thats your best bet. Is yours still under warranty?
Same issue
Has anyone found out what causes this problem? My girl really misses this phone. lol. i got cm9 and twrp installed on hers. Like the orignal poster - the Power, Vol Up, and Vol down only work in the bootloader. when CM9 boots up non of the hard keys work.

[Q] HTC One S bootloop

Hello experts,
My wife's HTC one S has suddenly started behaving strange. It keeps rebooting itself endlessly, which i have learned here is called bootloop. I did the volume + power button trick and reached the HBOOT screen. There it gives me options like Recovery, Factory reset, Sim lock, Image CRC and Show barcode.
What does the recovery option do? I desperately need to pull out the pics and contacts out of this phone. I am afraid to click on the Recovery option without knowing what it will do?
Any help from anyone here?

Ok. I think I will prefer to continue with the warranty. So looks like I will have to do a factory reset. Btw, what is that recovery option expected to do without unlocking the bootloader? Any idea?

Yeah. It has factory reset, OTA update options. When you select recovery, you'll see a phone with red triangle, press volume up + power at once to enter recovery.

[Q] Is it possible to unroot Verizon gs3 with cracked digitizer?

I rooted my Verizon gs3 using Saferoot (I think). I dropped the phone and cracked the screen and digitizer (phone will power on but can't see anything on the screen). I've received my insurance replacement phone and have to send the cracked one back. Is there any way to unroot the phone before I return it? I did trade for the phone used so I could plead ignorance and say that the previous owner must have done it if Verizon catches it. TIA

Look for a program that will display your screen through the computer.
Or you could simply flash a stock 4.4.2 rom through download mode, then everything looks like it hasn't been touched. Download mode is easy to get into and you don't need a working screen.

Thanks! I'll have to do some research on getting into download mode or if you can please point me to a guide. I've never flashed a rom to my phone (although I have thought about it). The main thing that I've ever needed has been root to be able to use the wifi tethering.

Power off phone, then it's power +volume down +home. Once it boots, give it a minute then hit volume up. You can verify you're in download mode if Odin recognizes your phone.
