So I bought my shield tablet way back when they first came out. I rooted it on Kit Kat without unlocking the bootloader, then upgraded to Android 5.0, keeping root and keeping my bootloader locked.
I got super busy with school and I totally stopped keeping up to date with Android stuff. Long story short, I'm getting back into it and just found out about this recall. I have a ton of experience rooting Android tablets and phones, I've just been out of the game for about a year.
Does anyone know how I can update to the latest OTA, and keep root? I'm not against unlocking my bootloader if I need to. Also is it still possible to keep them from killing the old tablet when I get the new one? I have been reading around and I'm still confused wether or not it is still possible.
Thanks in advanced.

i am looking on ebay and thinking of buying a used droid ultra i heard of locked bootloader. what exactly does that do ? are we able to install recovery and flash custom roms to all models if not what should i stay away from . thanks for any info.
Go to xda's swappa.com you can get a brand new Droid maxx for under $300
You should be able to unlock your bootloader for free very soon due to a new exploit.
Otherwise if the phone ships with 4.4 you can root it. Don't take any updates.
I don't recommend any roms. We have xposed framework to customize factory firmware. Plus you begin to lose functionality like active display, although a few newer apps can try to replicate it.

Hi! Sorry to hijack but I'm going nuts and looked at thread for hours and hours. I'd like to ask if I'm correct that I have 4.4 and that I can somehow root it. Could you kindly link to a thread that would help me root or get me in the right direction?
I went to Verizon today and got a Droid Maxx xt1080. I want to root it so I can just use Titanium to backup/restore before I load all my apps and settings back up, or decide to take it back and get a phone that I can root ($30 penalty 14 day return). I haven't rooted anything before. It keeps asking me to "Install system update New version: 19.6.3.en.US" and I press Later. About Phone says Android version 4.4 System version 19.5.3.obake-maxx_verizon.Verizon.en.US.
Thanks so much!
Just go to droid ultra, original android development. It's in the threads. You'll find many explanations.
Use pie exploit by jcase, and then to keep root after reboot you'll also need to use wpnomo.
I had a very hard time with wpnomo. Maybe due to our pcs. I just decided to unlock my bootloader on my 32gb droid maxx earlier in the year.
Dan Rosenberg just presented an exploit that will hopefully work it's way to us. So what I'm saying is, keep delaying update, try pie and wpnomo. If it's too difficult just wait for the bootloader because it's soooo much easier to modify with an unlocked bl.

Hi all,
I've had a bit of experience in rooting and flashing, back on my old Nexus 4. Haven't done it in awhile due to my 4.4 Nexus 5 stock being bloody perfect in my opinion.
But coming up to Android 5 lollipop... I'm really looking for a new ROM as I believe 5.0 stock is terrible. So my first question: Is it now possible to restore the tablet back to a state that the warranty provider will not be able to tell it's been rooted/flashed (and voided warranty)?
My Second is: How on earth do you chose between ROMs now? I'm thinking of using xTraSmooth 3.1 but OptiPop has also caught my eye!
Cheers.

First of all, the Nexus 5 isn't a tablet.
It is possible to reset the bootloader tamper flag and relock it, either with a few apps that require root access then removing root with the option in SuperSU, or simply flashing with LG Flashtool. The Nexus 5 doesn't have anything else to show if it has been modified or not, unless you blatantly have the bootloader unlocked or a custom ROM/SuperSU binaries installed (which doesn't matter if the phone can't even boot up at all I guess).
Also, if you bought it from Google via the Play Store, they don't seem to mind any sort of software state if its a legitimate manufacturing defect that the warranty usually covers. People have sent in their devices for legitimate defects with unlocked bootloaders and custom ROMs + kernels and Google hasn't really cared.
Regarding your second question: you try a few out and find the one you like. Or if that's not possible then some of us end up building our own.

Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it!
I think I'll install xtrasmooth today !
Hi Everyone,
I have a Droid Mini running on Android 4.4. Running on Straight Talk service.
Is it possible to root my device? I am not sure how to determine if my bootloader is unlocked.
I mainly would like to root my device to use TitaniumBackUp to back up and restore my device. I am not sure of another app that will allow me to backup and restore my apps, app data and settings, without my device being rooted.
Any and all help is appreciated.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!!

Other than the fact this is not the right section to be posting a question, I'll try and answer it anyways.
No BL unlock, not unless you can get the bootloader unlocked via a tool, verizons website, or the china guys service for ~25$USD which can all be found by a simple google.
You can try the Sunshine Bootloader unlock apk, however at 4.4.4 I am unable to use it (Droid Ultra)
The 4.4 Bounty thread is HERE which appears to have minimal attention at the moment
And HERE is the latest news on the China mans service, which appears to have gone and passed by now.
To root directly, you can give all the tools a try, and all the downloadable apks and give them a run, one by one, until you get to the realization you are stuck with what you have - unless you can downgrade and then root/bl unlock. Which by my knowledge, you can't - but I may be mistaken. Only reason I say you cant though, is if you could so could others, and there would already be more posts about it.
The last and final suggestion, buy a new mobo/chipset that had your OS of your preferred version installed prior so you can have immediate access. This is a tricky one however, due to this requiring you to tear apart your phone which isn't something most people feel comfortable doing. You also are at the mercy of whoever or wherever you buy the mobo/chipset from - as it could have water damage, or other faults negating the idea of having root to begin with (if your phone crashes every 10 minutes or so due to a short).

TL;DR
You're screwed, for the time being.
just got the phone, upgraded from a moto G
Updated it to 5.01
Now my question is, what are the necessities i need to do with the phone now, e.g. unlocked bootloader and then rooting..etc?
Or should i wait for 5.1 to touch anything
Lmk, i've been out of the rooting scene for a while now.

You can do what ever you want to do my friend It is very easy to root and unlock the N5 and when 5.1 comes and you want to try it out, you can always flash the factory image.

First thing I'd do is unlock the bootloader. That wipes your device and might as well as get that out of the way before you load a bunch of stuff on it.

thanks guys ...unlocked bootloader and did chainfire auto root...
I just bought the verizon variant of the z3. I've ready different things saying that they aren't root able yet. But, I've also read that as long as they're on 4.4.4 they still are. Mine is definitely still on 4.4.4. Can I root this phone? It has like, 60+processes running all the time that slow this thing down to barely usable..... Help!
you should be able to root providing you have firmware that is rootable, maybe you are confusing rooting with unlocking the bootloader for custom kernels
