Fix a soft bricked g930f with backup from a good g930f? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I purchased a g930f off of Swappa and somehow soft bricked it to the point where it lost its imei and even if I get it to boot, it won't access my provider (ATT). I bought another one (yeah) and it appears to have exactly the same firmware that the bricked one did when I got it. I wonder if by making a nandroid backup of the new phone, I can get the old one working again, and somehow get the original imei reinstated on the bricked phone. I do NOT want to fake an imei, or do any other illegal thing, just get the first phone working again and hopefully reinstate its imei and serial number. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Try using Odin and download mode to get back to stock. That should bring back your imei. I think because you restored a backup from another phone, it tried to write the new imei on the old phone causing an error. Let me know how it goes.

I never did get back about your reply, but you were on track with your suggestion. I ended up finding the factory binary and flashing that, which got me back my IMEI and able to boot again, and then flashed the proper firmware. All is well since then.

[Q] Nexus 5 Possible EFS issue, IMEI already repaired

First post, long time lurker, so i'll start with a big thanks to the entire community for all the help you've unknowingly given me.
I just got a nexus 5 to replace my original n5 which has a broken screen. I took a backup of the original and restored it to the new one. Unfortunately i didn't know what EFS was, so i restored the old EFS to the new phone. IMEI went to zero. HUGE BUMMER.
I was able to fix the IMEI with QPST, but the new phone will not connect to the network. I've run a check on the IMEI and it is not blacklisted. Without incriminating myself, lets just say that i'm positive that the new IMEI is good.
The phone recognizes that i've inserted a SIM but shows no signal. I've tried to search for networks, i've checked the APN settings...
I REALLY don't want to send this to LG since they can't give me a price or even a ballpark figure without me shipping them the phone...
Any advice on next steps would be greatly appreciated.
What should i try next?!

I guess i should have mentioned that i've flashed factory also. Currently the phone is on the latest firmware, unrooted, locked bootloader. Flashing factory had no effect at any point.
I bought this phone on Swappa BTW, so i am assuming there are no hardware issues. I'm not at all certain what else may have been screwed up by having another phone's EFS restored over this "new" phone's EFS...
More Info
I am able to attempt to manually select the network. When i search for networks, the available networks are shown, but when i try to connect it shows the Registering dialog for quite a while, then fails. This is the same behavior as a working phone without a SIM installed. The odd part is that the phone will recognize when a SIM is installed or removed. It seems that my problem may be that the SIM is not being read properly or the data is being lost/corrupted between SIM and antenna. Is this possible? Is this EFS corruption? is this something i can fix? Please help.
Bump?

[Q] IMEI corrrupted

Bought a new S6 from Ebay that had been opened up to all networks. Discovered it was rooted which I didn't want so I flashed it with a stock Vodafone ROM. The phone worked fine for about 10 days then all of a sudden I got the message 'not registered on network' when I try to make call. It turns out that the IMEI number has changed. Does anyone know whether this type of problem can be sorted out?
Flash back to stock via odin.

I'm going to use a Vodafone ROM as this phone was originally on Vodafone before the seller had it opened up to all networks. THE ROM is G920FXXU1AOCZ_G920FVFG1AOC4_G920FXXU1AOCW_HOME.tar.md5. Does this sound like the right one? Sorry for all the questions - I'm new to this. The other thing worth mentioning is the IMEI at the moment is 350000000000006. Where could this have come from? Any ideas? It's weird because the original IMEI was in tact for about 10 days before it changed to the one above. Any help at all would be appreciated

Corrupt imei is known issue when flashing and rooted. That's why firdt thing you do when rooting, is you backup your stock rom together with efs folder. Idk which is your stock rom, you have to do some research, download that rom and use odin to go back to stock. You will lose everything you got on the phone btw so save any pictures or music.

Thanks for that. The problem I have is that there's no backup of the EFS folder or the stock ROM. Without these, is there any way of sorting this out or is the phone dead? Cheers

i have same problem did you fix that if yes please help me
Bring S6 back to Samsung for repair
My guess is the phone you bought was stolen and after 10 days it got blacklisted.
Or the seller claimed he lost his phone to insurance company, sold it you, got a new one on insurance, and then after the 10 days the "lost" phone (your phone) got blacklisted.

I have the exact same problem, bro. All of the sudden my IMEI changed to 350000000000006 and I'm not able to register on my network. Did you manage to fix this? Please, let me know.
The same story, any help?
How I can fix this? Please help
Get Chimera tool and you should be able to fix it no problem
Did you manage to fix?
My baseband shows as attached after installing vador rom so I'm confused
If you didn't formatted/wipe the efs/nvbackup, there's a chance you can retrieve your imei.
But if it doesn't, the only way is to bring it up to Samsung or a good phone technicians to repair or get you a new branded IMEI for your phone. Mine was fixed by a technician using Octopus box tool.
You may try my method, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63693480&postcount=28

I've killed my phone / Kernel Panic after trying to recover IMEi

I'm the dumbest person on Earth. I own now a G930F brick that lose IMEI after updating to Nougat and I did the steps to recover my EFS from a Post here and now I have a Kernel Panic that says Power Reset or Unknown Upload Mode. I tried several times to flash on Odin my latest stock ROM but nothing happens. My laptop recognize the phone so as Odin but I don't know if I have to use other software to recover my phone. I can't get into bootloader mode, it just says some codes and the android logo saying power reset or unknown mode. When i press vol down and power to shut it off it gets stucked on samsung logo and some codes on green and pink upside to the left. I just can't turn off the phone so now its plugged to the wall.
I hope someone can help me... I'm really sad about it, sounds funny but I really I am.

Try a different network SIM, maybe it's SIM locked to a specific carrier
And check if the IMEI is blocked, that happens a lot with 2nd hand phones, either reported stolen or the original owner got them on contract, sold the phone then stopped paying the contract and the carrier blocked the IMEI

Yeah that's what happened. I went to a service center and they told me that my phone has the imei blocked so they flashed a stock mm rom and then they plugged some kind of special cable to change the imei again. They told me that i can't update anything so now phone Is working on mm and i just have a last question about it. Can i update to nougat on odin without flashing the modem or something to not lose the imei again or Is just impossible to update. Phone Is rooted and twrp installed, that's how they gave it to me.

IMEI is on the EFS partition, you can backup your EFS partition using TWRP and other tools, so I guess you could restore it if you killed it again
Don't see why you couldn't flash an updated custom ROM via TWRP, but if you're flashing with ODIN you'll lose TWRP
Unless there is something else they did that requires that exact firmware
But we are reaching a grey area of what is allowed to be discussed on XDA as changing IMEIs is illegal in most countries and not to be discussed here

[Fixed] My SM-G955U Has No IMEI or Baseband

EDIT:
I was able to fix it! I had to install a custom ROM to obtain root and delete my EFS partition.
So, here is a bit of a story I will try to keep short.
I went to Vietnam and bought a S8+ from there.
It was a US S8+ from Sprint.
I used it fine there but when I came back to states I tried to put my Verizon sim in and it doesn't work.
I don't get any signal. But I am able to see Baseband and IMEI.
So, I tried to use Odin and flash one of the SM-G955U1 Firmware.
Now, my phone is weird and out with no Baseband or IMEI.
So I try to flash back to firmware it was on.
Same thing.
Any ideas why my S8+ is like this?

What happens if you restore from the OEM function?
Try downloading custom recovery and flashing a custom rom. You will lose samsung pay but you might have a working phone it's a chance I would take if it was me. Your baseband is messed up try just flashing your carrier baseband . These are just ideas good luck

If flashing a custom ROM will fix your phone then so will downloading latest official Samsung ROM and flashing via latest Odin .
The second option above would be the best to try unless you're happy to have a custom rom and lose Samsung pay and anything that relies on Knox being functional

Jtag dead phone to life and rewrite IMEI
First of all my phone is the s8+ G955fd, but I am sure that the people that helped me can help most Samsung owners with bricked phones.
My phone ended up being stuck on the first boot screen, I couldn't get into recovery or download mode. I installed TWRP and after that I lost my IMEI numbers( dual sim), so I tried to reflash stock and thats when i became bricked. I searched someone to help and found reference to the Fonefunshop in England. I sent it there and they said that the eMMC chip was bad. I searched for someone who could write to it or put a new one on the motherboard . I found A2Z cellular in Ottawa Canada. They used jtag to restore it to stock and they told me that the Fonefunshop had not opened the phone which is necessary to use jtag as they claimed, so avoid them.
The phone was now back doing everything it should except the IMEI's were null like before. I gave them the original IMEI's and the phone is working like new.
If your Samsung is bricked these guys can probably fix it and it won't cost much to find out.
the SM-G955U has a locked bootloader, so people should not be telling you to flash a custom recovery or custom ROMs. there is only one way to get root on this phone, through the samfail exploit, and safestrap is the only working recovery. I don't believe it supports CDMA networks but I'm not 100% sure on that. I have this device and I'm only aware of GSM carriers using it.
Just an update on this issue. I still don't have a working Baseband or IMEI. Any clues?

Be very careful with doing that. It can cause the EFS (the partition that controls IMEI, Mac and a few other things) to be completely corrupted. Which will cause the device to be useless without fixing it.
Now a little heads up. As messing with the IMEI is illegal in many countries (the US being one of them) There are only 2 ways to fix an IMEI issue allowed on XDA.
1. Restore the backed up EFS partition
2. Return it to the OEM to be repaired.
What did you do after you deleted EFS? I can delete in Combination but I dont get the IMEI number back.
Please I need all XDA members assist ,because of I mistake delete EFS with combination file on my G955U VZW , I have null imei number, then I repair it by flash qcn with z3x Samsung tool , but still I have IMEI number but emergency call only is still display without service ,

Emergency Calls Only after flashing with Odin (IMEI Status: NG)

Hello, apologies for the lengthy post.
I bought a used G780F, noticed it was rooted after taking home, but no big deal. Tried flashing it with Odin with HOME CSC, but it got stuck in a bootloop so I had to factory reset it, but it managed to update and everything was fine until I noticed emergency calls only...
I checked the IMEI status on my countries website, it was blocked for not being registered, so the carrier unblocked it and I just had to wait to get signal again. It's been a week since it got unblocked, so I should be getting service. The carrier told me it's unlocked so it's likely an issue with the phone, and I believe so too. My IMEI and S/N show up fine when using *#06#, I've basically tried every fix except Chimera tool as the license is way too expensive for me right now. Any help or advice would appreciated, thanks so much!

Well, I have the same exact issue.
I found out that this is a live demo unit that has been modified to run on a fake IMEI number to make calls.
My concern was that the root was interfering with my banking app and so I had to flash a new firmware to remove the root.
Interestingly, when I tried to remove it prior to flashing it kept coming back everytime I reboot the phone.

I literally did the same, but I already knew that my phone is a Live Demo, and I took my chances and got Status NG, so I re Rooted the phone and went to a Software Shop that fixed the IMEI for 5$, and yesterday I updated the Magsik App and got the IMEI Status back and looking for what the shop did, as I confirmed he didn't use Chimera tool
