Possible Root & S-Off? Downgrade? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

Been a while since I been on xda. I been using my htc m8 from Verizon. It's a great phone. Is sunshine really worth 25$..? I been looking up apps and other stuff to see if I can still root and get s-off.. but it hit me, can I just downgrade to the orignal version? (out the box software) Then get a s-off? I'm running on the 6.0 marshmallow. It's gotta be possible I just wanna get this thing called rooted already. :good:

Sunshine is the only option. I highly suggest paying $25.
It's a more than fair price. (Think about the number of devices they make paperweights providing us this option. Also they are the only option . You can ship it out to a Java card, but that's shipping fees and paying to use the card unless you're friends with them and do it for free, and even then shipping is prob more than $25..
Save up and enjoy the unlocked device thanks to sunshine. If you can't afford it, that is something you will need to figure out.
Best of luck!

theres also weaksauce... can I just do that

Weaksauce has been discontinued. You may be able to dig up the file somewhere but the server side has been taken down so it will never work. Sunshine is your option and it's worth it.

Will pay to find 9.30 root and unlock bootloader.

I'll pay $50 to get root and another $50 for bootloader. Let's start a bounty!
I would happily put $25 to it as i'm really missing my root on this phone :crying:
EDIT: 9.30 when did that one come out. I'm on 9.18.94
i have root it

There are 2 different but the same builds for the latest ota, the one you are on and 9.30. Just depends on which one you were on, to determine which one you moved to. This isn't the first ota that's been like that.
The devs have reported, they can find no noticeable difference from one to the other, that's why you will only find one build on sbf-dev.
Tappin G2 Style
Lazy box... I read your post on droidrzr.com. of course you can root on an unlocked boot loader. Some of us have received warranty replacement phones that VZW have on the latest ota. So as it stands right now that means no unlock and no root.
I will throw in $10 on the bounty.

I will throw $20 into the pot. Got one from Ebay but already with the fixed OTA...
I good to throw in 20.00
I'll pledge too
I'll pledge $30 to a bootloader unlock bounty and $20 to a new root exploit bounty. And I'll make an equal donation to xdadevelopers.
I had a XT926M on 9.16.6 and dropped it while traveling. Sent it for repair (screen broken, otherwise worked fine). The service center essentially lost my phone. They replaced it with a brand new XT926M on 9.20.1. I have frozen the updater and I would, once again, like to have the insurance an unlooked boot loader offers for maintaining root into the future.
I'll throw $25 in. I really like this phone but it's almost worthless to me now that it's un-rootable. Wish I knew how to help figure out how to find an exploit
I just update everyone bounties on the bounty forum that I create and it has the total dollars as well.

I'm going to see what I can come up with..of course if it is worth trying I'll let everyone know...I would have to relock my bootloader to give it a go or buy another m8. As all 5 of mine or already s-off.
Is there anyway to s off this device?
Yes, you try firewater if that does not work for you then you going to need spend $25 for sunshine which is supported now.

I understand that...As long as you don't update nothing till you can get the money. You will be ok.
Thanks for this. I'm getting an RMA exchanged phone, and $25 is a lot given my current financial situation (I'm lucky to be able to pay my cell bill). Something like this would be awesome.
So in order to make this work... We need verizon (non Korean) files. We should try to complie similar ones.

PLEASE!!!!

Do not take the new EYE update if you have yet to root and unlock your phone. I suggest you do so now and do not want to have to see a bounty to get root and unlock back.
JCASE has stated that there is possibly a patch to prevent sunshine from unlocking your phone. Please do not take the update if you want to root and unlock your phone.
Thank you!!

Thank you for that public service announcement. Now if I could please have a dollar bill for everyone who takes the OTA then posts here and on Q&A that they've lost root, etc. etc. etc.

And for everyone complaining about the cost of Sunshine,JUST BITE THE BULLET N DO IT! IT'S WELL WORTH IT! IF YOU'RE ON A HIGHER FIRMWARE,your Gonna spend more than$25 worth of man hours TRYING (almost positively unsuccessfully) to find a free way, and most of the free routes died with the older firmware. JCase n Beaups have done a great job,and once u use sunshine on your device,no OTA can take away S-off or an unlocked boot loader ,they may kill root, but as long as your s-off ,that's an easy fix. So to save yourself future aggrevation ,just get it now while u STILL CAN
I haven't gotten around yet to using sunshine. Can anyone confirm whether or not the update breaks the ability to use sunshine? I haven't seen it posted yet...

Someone posted in the weaksauce thread that sunshine is not working on vzw 4.4.4. So that's the answer I'm going with...

Tempted to try sunshine myself to see.

[Q] looking to get an HTC one M8..

Have decided to pick up an M8 and have been reviewing the process for unlocking the potential of the phone.. had a couple general questions about
If the phone comes with 4.4.4, is it still unlockable/rootable using the sunshine option? or am I out of luck?
Would there be a better chance to have an older version firmware if I pickup in store versus ordering it online from VZW?
I’ve been reading about how VZW likes to ‘lock down’ their devices using successive OTA updates.. If it comes with a newer stock firmware and I am unable to unlock/root, is it likely or possible in the future for it to become an option?
I appreciate your time and effort.
Cheers
Well-Some have had luck with unlocking with Sunshine http://theroot.ninja/index.html on 4.4.4 I was not able too- they are working on 3.0 version and they said this will unlock the bootloader and give you s-off. There is no ETA. Though, I read a post that said they were shooting for January 2015, but there were no promises.
The good news is that weaksauce 2 will give you temporary root. But you can not make any permanent changes/ using xPosed framework is a bad idea. However, I would try the current version of sunshine and give it a shot!
I was able to download a wifi tether app and got that to work. So, I am waiting for Sunshine 3.0 to drop!

I see. Well I certainly appreciate your input.
I know the newer versions of all the current flagship phones will be announced/released in the next couple of months and wanted to get a feel for people's thoughts on how this would affect current phones and the methods used to root/unlock them.
I guess the fact that a newer version of sunshine is in the works is good news.. I can play around with stock (assuming my phone comes with 4.4.4) until 3.0 sunshine hits.
So just an FYI..
Picked up a new HTC One M8 from verizon retailer this morning.. came with 4.4.3 (2.21.605.2)
Didnt activate in store.. got home and after turning on and activating I plugged in to charge.. Came back not 5 minutes later and it was downloading a firmware update from verizon. No notification or authorization.

You should have the option of not installing it. So you can do the Sunshine thing then update if you wish.

Ya I force quit the download, but I suppose if it finished downloading there should be an option to not install..

Should I wait to root?

Lollipop is coming any minute now and it's funny because I just started looking into rooting my phone, but should I just wait and upgrade my phone first or does that mean all the "roots" will be out of date?

If you accept the OTA update, it is highly unlikely you will be able to achieve root or S-OFF.
Root or S-off?
The simple answer is you should never wait. Bird in hand is better than a possible one in the bush.

Actually.. if your device is supported by sunshine it doesn't get any easier than that. An app to s-off. An app to install root.

Yea I'm a total noob when it comes to rooting as I've never done it before. Are you saying I just have to pay for Sunshine, run it and then run something else and it will be rooted? Won't the lollipop update make it so I can't root until the proper updates are made??

you should try sunshine while you still can. It will tell you if it's compatible before asking for paypal info. IF you jump to lollipop you will have to wait even longer for sunshine.

I guess the fact that it costs $25 and I'm worried I will brick my phone make me not want to do it (I'm only 18). Thanks for all the help though I think I understand rooting better now and hopefully I will do it in the future when I'm less afraid lmao

Why won't I be able to do it in the future? Don't people always eventually find a way to root, it just takes time?

There's no guarantee you'll be able to do it in the future. More than likely HTC has plugged the hole that Sunshine exploited on previous versions of the OS. There maybe another version of Sunshine waiting in the wings but I wouldn't count on it. Jcase (one of the 2 devs who came up with Sunshine) tweeted last week that if you want to s-off, better do it before the lollipop update. That's about all he said about it so I don't know if that means you're out of luck if you don't or not. It could be they have another version that they're holding back until the update is rolled out but they have no way of knowing if it will work for sure on official lollipop since nobody has received it yet. Or it could be that they've gotten a leaked version somehow and can't find a way in. Whatever the case, If you want s-off I would suggest you heed his warning and get it now while/if you can.
Deleted
There is no promise that a new exploit will be found. There isn't always someone doing the work to find an exploit. A great example is the SGS3 which after its last OTA updated was locked down tight and nobody ever bothered to find an exploit for it, and that's how it's been ever since. Sunshine and root are extremely low risk. I'd definitely do it just like Dottat suggested. The guy knows his stuff and wouldn't give you errant advice.
