I recently got a Nexus 5 to replace my old Nexus S and really like it. I am having one challenge that I was hoping for help on:
I have got OTG working with stickmount fine, but I am trying to use this Y-cable to charge while using it and I can't get the phone to charge from the cable at all (with or without a USB drive connected). I have been able to get other, non-Nexus's to charge from the cable so it isn't the cable that is the problem.
I am rooted but running a stock kernel and rom - any ideas why it might not be working or if there is a custom kernel that has enabled the capability otherwise disabled in the phone?
Probably you need a modified Kernel like Nexus 7

You need a modified Kernel something like the following Kernel. But at the moment it is only available for Nexus 7.

I'm interested in this too

I had OTG charging on my Galaxy Nexus as well as the N7. I just tried it too on my N5 with Elemental X kernel, no go. That's odd no one has come out with this feature yet if that's the case as I'm sure it's very sought after especially with people who have the 16gb model like myself that hook up to external hard drives to save space on the phone but they need external power.
Otg + Charging is also very useful when you are playing games using GamePad

If you are using a USB Connection Game Pad via OTG, graphics heavy games use too much battery and usually you can not play for long. This also increases the importance of such kernel for Nexus 5 as well. Nexus 5 have smaller battery but it can play decent Graphics.
I do not like Game Pads with Bluetooth connectivity as they have control latency or lag and your moves are not as quick as even the touch screen, where as you use Game Pads to improve your control moves and probably make them better than touch screen.

The PS sixaxis controller worked great on my N7 for a while, no lag in gameplay. Until Asus had to fix it then I could never get it to work properly again.
I think Nexus 5 USB Port is 5 Pin

I think that Nexus 5 USB Port is 5 Pin and not 11 pin like Galaxy S4 or Galaxy S3. Can someone please confirm this?
If this is the case will be still be able to Charger Phone and do OTG concurrently or simultaneously ?
Yes but I believe it's something that has to be addressed at the kernel level.
I use a powered USB hub and even though the phone doesn't show any charging animations, going into the battery info screen shows it is charging (though it doesn't say usb or ac, just charging)
from what I have seen it's even less than trickle charge.
USB flash drive mounted.
Screen off
Battery goes up about 1% every 10-15 minutes.
So clearly current is being passed from the hub to the phone. Just not a lot

I am not sure but can we use QI Wireless charging along OTG. I have read somewhere that it charges but there is a bug in Kernel due to which it does not know that battery is being charged there is no animation or text to show that battery is being charged. Another concern is that if OS does not know about charging and battery is being charged is it not dangerous can it not overcharge and below the battery etc.?

I use exactly the same Y-cable from amazon as avalpert. I connect my USB 2.5" harddisk first at the Nexus charger and let it spin up. Then i connect the OTG cable to my Nexus 5 (rooted stock ROM & stock kernel). The battery icon in the status bar has no charging animation but in settings it says its charging. Around 1% in 5-10min. Even if the screen is on.
@ avalpert: U could check the current of your usb drive in the manufacturer's datasheet and subtract this from the current, your charger is able to provide. My Nexus 5 charger can output max. 1.2A at 5V. Maybe you're using another model and there is just little current left to charge as Alex remarked.
But the difference is I was only powering a flash drive which uses next to no power. And still only 1% every 10-15 minutes.
My best guess is that because otg is enabled. The kernel is not able to tell what type of charging type (ac or USB) is connected so it just enables trickle charge as not to cause any problems

I can confirm this, I use a powered 7 port USB 2.0 hub, and with the original PS: no charging.
Now I took another PS that puts out 2.14-1.7A @ 6-7.5 VDC, and hey presto, charging the phone!
No indicator in the status bar (top screen), but when checking the battery status it clearly states "CHARGING" (see picture OPLADEN 95%)!!
And it charges pretty fast too.....
The mouse is working, as wel as the USB stick is recognized and working!!
The ONLY worry is about the charge....... is 6-7.5 V a battery killer? :fingers-crossed:
Anyone?
Used Voltage and Current Rating details of Power Supply?

I found the rating strange myself as wel, but it is exactly as I mentioned, but since I didn't trust it up ahead, I just went to my basement to see if I had something better, and I found a 5V 2A.

Can you tell the result of using 5V 2A Power Supply.

Yes 5V 2A seems write but I still can not give you any guarantee it might blow your device so do it at your own risk
If you can do this, then please tell how the charging speed is going along OTG use on 5V 2A?

May be we can use fixed output voltage and amp adapter just like the following
http://www.amazon.co.uk/2000mah-Ada...ds=5V+2A+2000ma+AC+Power+Adapter+Wall+Charger
I know it is up to the device (Nexus 5) that how much load it will put on the adapter to consumer out of 2000ma or 2A. On the other hand I have read somewhere that even most 2000mA USB Chargers just give 500mA in the beginning and due to some data pins activity they start generating 2000mA. If this is the case then Nexus 5 will force only 500mA or so from the charger that it is not compatible with. If we use some adapter that generates constant 5V 2000mA irrelevant of communication on data pins like the ones with 3.5mm pin which does not have any data pins, at least we are guaranteed that, at least full power is coming out of the adapter at all times.

I am given to understand that it has nothing to do with the "intelligence" of the charger, but with basic electrical principles.
That would imlpicate that if a device requires 500 mA, the charger will supply 500 mA, if the device would require 3000mA, then it would supply 2000 mA, being it's maximum current (flow).
As far as I know, a powersource ONLY generates a flow (Amps) up to it's maximum limit, if it is connected to a consumer (device). No connected device / consumer leaves no flow to be generated.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Added to my little test earlier today: The phone didn't get hot, at most it would be slightly less cool..... for the PS the same.

Hello figo_rulz,
I can comfirm that the Sony Xperia Z3 D6603 has Quick Charge 2.0 built in, as the Sony Xperia Z3 Consists of the 'Snapdragon 801 chip' which is believed to hold the Quick charge 2.0 Capability (You can also check on their website: https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/quick-charge)
Sony sells a 'Quick charger' also here's the link listed below:

So just reading up and it seems EP880 adapter which is what all UK Z3's have is what the adapter also is with the EP881. The only difference is actually the cable as this has two ferrite cores which prevents interference and the EP880 has none. so ideally I would just need to look for the cable as my adapter is capable of this quick charging 2.0! Apparently the cable we have is the EC803 without the two ferrite cores and the one you need to enable quick charging 2.0 is EC802!
The search goes on for the cable!
I use my note 4 quick charger and it works
How fast is it?

Despite of what Sony says in this link:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Z3-Dual/Quick-Charge-2-0/m-p/973745#U973745
I have tested different chargers and came to the conclusion that Quick Charge 2.0 does work with the Xperia Z3 (at least with my variant, the D6633). I could verify that I have happily charged my Xperia Z3 from 10% to 100% in a little less than two hours, using a Motorola Moto Maxx (Droid Turbo) charger, which is a charger with Quick Charge 2.0 technology.
Moreover, I have also verified the charging currents with the Battery Monitor Widget app, and noticed that using different chargers can drastically change the charging speed of our phone.
I am going to take some screenshots tonight when I put the Xperia Z3 to charge and then upload them here tomorrow.
SONY Quick Charger EP881 is NOT QC2.0 compatible/certified. I own one & shipped charger seems better but I hv no clue why.
OK, here are the results for my charging.
Up to 40%, I have recharged my phone with a Moto Maxx (Droid Turbo) Quick Charge 2.0 charger, then I changed to the stock/original Xperia Z3 "quick" charger (EP881), which I have no idea why is named "quick" charger by Sony...
Notice the Moto Maxx charger got me a 1600ma/h charging, which would charge my phone in about 2 hours. The EP881 Sony Stock charger got me around 900ma/h charging. That would led me to a total recharging time of more than 3 hours.
I still could not test different Quick Charge 2.0 chargers, but I can assure that the Moto Maxx/Droid Turbo one DOES work with the Xperia Z3.
It IS QC2.0 compatible, HOWEVER: The charging setup is such that you'll only see a benefit in cases of charging while the system is under load.
The Z3 kernel limits battery charge current to 1.5A (approximately 0.5C) regardless of what charger is attached.
If you attach a non-QC2.0 charger with a VERY high quality cable (less than 3 feet with 24 gauge wire or thicker), you'll typically see 1.5A of battery current WHEN THE SCREEN IS OFF. Even in that case, you won't see consistent 1.5A input into the battery (use CurrentWidget)
Turn the screen on and you will NOT see 1.5A of current going into the battery with a non-QC2.0 charger, as the battery power in is (Vbus input limit - system load)
However, if you have a QC2.0 charger, even with a thin USB cable that would normally lead to extremely poor charging performance, you'll see 1.5A go into the battery under almost any load condition.
TL;DR - It's QC2.0 capable but you'll only see a difference when the device's screen is NOT off. If the device is plugged in to a high-quality USB cable and the screen is off, you'll see only minimal differences.
You'll see a MASSIVE difference if you use one of these cables - http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Micro-USB-Cable-UUSBHAUB3RA/dp/B001AR4NC8/ - These cables aren't particularly good for charging with a standard charger because they're thin - but that same "problem" makes them good for connecting to a phone in a car mount. (I cannot find heavier-gauge cables with a right angle connector). If you use a standard charger with them, you'll find your battery draining with Google Maps Navigation. With a QC2.0 car charger - the battery will actually charge while running Navigation.
I've confirmed QC2.0 functionality with a Tenergy wall charger, a Powermod car charger, and an Aukey external pack. The Tenergy wall charger is nice in that it has an indicator light - blue if in "standard" 5v mode, green if in 9v or 12v QC2.0 modes. Sony's stock chargers are NOT QC2.0 capable.

I find it interesting that you say this, because even with the phone left untouched I can't even get 1.0A charging with the stock charger and stock usb cable. As I have shown in my post before, I get a 0.8 to 0.9A charging, and yes, the screen is off. I have not touched my phone during this time at all. What can I conclude from that? Isn't the stock usb cable good enough?
Moreover, if this limit is set the by Z3 Kernel, it is possible to edit in the stock kernel, isn't it?
Regards.

In my case, I was using a Samsung tablet charger. These actually increase their voltage slightly under load to compensate for cable losses. I forget what Sony's stock charger is rated - but if you're only seeing 0.8-0.9A, then it might be on the weak side (just like the 2012 Nexus 7 had a weak charger). I pretty much exclusively use Anker multiport power supplies and either Monoprice or Anker heavy-gauge (24AWG for Monoprice, supposedly 21 for the Anker, lower is thicker/better here) cables.
A QC2.0 charger makes the cable selection FAR less important - transferring a given wattage requires less current at 9V than at 5V, which leads to less resistive losses in the cable. Same principle as why power grids use hundreds of kilovolts for long-haul transmission lines.
Yes the kernel could be altered, but since the battery is nonreplaceable, few responsible developers are going to do it. Heck, sony AOSP currently disables the HVDCP service due to paranoia about ensuring that ALL battery management protection mechanisms are in place before turning it on in AOSP. (I am fairly certain they ARE all there, but I want to do some more digging.)
HVDCP?what is that?so if the kernel is altered then quick charge 2.0 can be used?so now my z3 d6653 can only charge a maximum current of 1.5 A?

HVDCP - High Voltage Dedicated Charging Port - I think Qualcomm is actually attempting to get QC2.0 standardized (they're already licensing it to non-QCOM OEMs - the Galaxy S6 supports it, as does NVidia's SHIELD Tablet, NV doesn't market the capability AT ALL but it's there!), so there are lots of references to naming conventions consistent with the USB Battery Charging Standard
DCP - Dedicated Charging Port (dumb wall charger)
SDP - Standard Downstream Port (PC port, limited to 500 mA)
CDP - Charging Downstream Port (PC port, allows for higher current) - Android device support for CDP detection is pretty rare, lots of kernel developers will risk damaging SDPs by simply forcing CDP behavior from an SDP
Even without kernel alterations, Quick Charge 2.0 is used - Quick Charge 2.0 is defined as delivering 9v or 12v from the wall to the device in order to deliver more power. It's up to the OEM whether to dump more of that into the battery, or simply to use it to allow for higher total system power. Without QC2.0, the Z3 can only charge at full rate in the absolute best of circumstances (screen turned off, even then it doesn't always reach 1.5A) - with QC2.0, the Z3 can charge at full speed even with the screen on.

Yes, it will charge faster.
How much faster depends on what you're doing. If the device's screen is off and it's idle, only a little bit faster.
If you're running Google Maps Navigation in a car, the difference will be massive. As in "charging at a decent rate vs. discharging despite being connected to a power supply".
It will charge in around 130 minutes with QC2.0, and around 210 minutes with the stock charger (EP880).
At least that's how it works for me.

Hello there,
I recently switched over from CM12.1 (SultanXDA) to Oxygen OS because I was getting major echoing. Now that I'm on Oxygen OS, the echoing is gone, but the charging is very slow. On a 1A charger, I was getting around 50mA at 10% battery and 500mA on a 2A charger. This is on stock Oxygen OS with superSu, xposed, and the Boeffla kernel. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I was thinking that maybe the ROM requires the stock charger to charge at reasonable speeds, but it seems to charge more quickly on my 2A charger than my 1A charger. I'm thinking this could have to do with the ROM demanding a certain voltage stability and lowering the charge rate until it gets that stability, but that's just a guess. Heowp would be nice :3.
same issue
same issue here:crying:, rocking sultanXDA's CM12.1. having less than 500Ma with official adapter and cable. Tested with Note2's charger, charge at less than 400Ma, Any1 can help on this ?
thanks
Hi, I have been using the EasyAcc powerbank which supports Smart charging (outputs the maximum current). I have noticed that it charges at 1.6amps - a lot higher. I recently installed Hellscore kernel. Before I installed this it was charging at 1amp. I have made he assumption that the kernel has allowed my device to charge further. My questions are :
1) Is this good on the battery (in the long run)
2) Is there a way I can disable this "quick charge" - without buying another power bank
...
.....
yes i read all previous post but no clear info. so i dont wanna spend 30euros for charger and i want to clear out what charger would charge my k1 "fast" and will charge even on gaming.
one of "cheap" but trusted brand is anker and i wonder if anyone try on it.
im lookingg this one.

I have bought exactly this charger (exactly on this page ) and it works without problems with my K1. First I load my K1 on my PS Vita charger, but that get really hot, too hot, so I bought this anker one.
I think the loading time is ok, but it didn't break any records, for sure.
Oh, and there is a known Android 6.0 bug that drained the battery faster than the charger could load it, when you use the K1 while loading it. So we need to wait for an Update from NVidia. A workaround should be deactivating App optimizing and deactivating WLAN when the display is off, so it didn't drain it too much in standby.
fresh 'n rebel wall charger 4.8 amp & 24Volts total 2 usb ports with 2,4 amp i got it with mine it's only 20€ and i can charge my phone and shield very fast.
at the same time
Physically the 2014 and 2015 Shield Tablets [WiFi/LTE/K1] support Quick Charge.
However, the stock ROMs have not supported it since N 1.2.1 A 4.4.2 (last version it works) on the 2014 Shield Tablets [WiFi/LTE] and never on the 2015 Shield Tablet [K1].
Alternative Kernels and ROMs have enabled support for later Android versions.
Some users have had success with using such kernels/ROMs and some have not.
I've had good luck with several 2.0-2.4A 5v chargers. Make sure you have a good cable too or it may drop to 1.0A. This will cause it to drain during use even when plugged in.
I suppose I would recommend a Anker 2x USB 24W charger. ~$10. If you want to find a good cable they make some. Otherwise any <= 6ft cable with <= 24 gauge power wiring is what to look for.
I used stock K1 lollipop and quick charge working well.
you can buy any cheap brand support quick charge instore (I have one in centrecom when its sale to $15 for multi-charge)
