Unlocked Xperia Z3 Marshmallow update (official) - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I am back on the Android bandwagon after a good 5-6 years of break and starting the journey with an unlocked Xperia Z3. I have not looked into flashing custom ROMs as I have just bought the device and don't really have time these days to go mental with modding and changing things around.
A quick Google search revealed that the latest official Android version for my specific model - D6603 is Android 6.0.1. However, my phone is on 5.1.1 currently and if I try to look for update, it says I have already got the latest version. I am in the UK and I thought that the global roll out was at the end of April. Any idea why the update is not available for me?!

As of now the only uk z3's to have 6.0.1 are 3 Uk, Virgin mobile uk, Vodafone Uk. U can how ever manually flash an official stock rom of 6.0.1.
Either download Flashtool or Xperifirm. Also a useful way to check for the latest firmware releases for the UK.
I flashed a U.S custom rom, Prerooted. Works fine

It takes time to get OTA update, but you can upgrade manually. Try using xperia companion on PC and check for an update. If it doesn't work then you can use Flashtool. Just google for it. Latest MM build for D6603 is 23.5.A.0.570.
Btw, this should be in Q&A section.

Thanks a lot guys... It feels alien to come back to all flashing and modding. I will try to pick up asap. Cheers

I would think the unlocked version get updates earlier than the carrier versions. Oh well... I guess manual update it is then. Do you see any difference with Marshmallow over Lollipop?

Well, each region gets the update different time, It can be that some regions aren't willing to push the update. No one knows when. But with manual update with flashtool you can install another region's firmware. There is no big differences between them.

My personal experience with MM is a good one, The new Ui seems to be smooth and fluid, battery optimization ( in my case ) seems far better than LP. And the new additions all be it only a few have made the z3 feel fresh and new. MM has been long awaited but in my humble opinion very much worth it. Although a feature i was looking forward to seeing was passed over by Sony, Adoptable storage. A shame but not a deal breaker.
But if you are interested in such things it is available in the Android N Preview, which is available to all 6603 users via Xperia companion.

Only real difference is the bloat wear and the LTE/4G icon for data.

Any Canadian Users??

Wondering if any Canadian Users have received an update yet? I'm with Telus, build number 7SQ8-UD80.
I'm running one I bought from Koodo. I'm on that same 7SQ8-UD80 build. Wondering if Alcatel pushes the updates, or if it'd need to go through carrier testing first.
If it needs to go through carrier testing, might take a while to get an update...that's if that carrier decides to bother putting money into testing an at all. Kind of early to know for sure though.
Might not hurt to ask Alcatel or your carrier via Twitter.
Any Canadians have update yet? I still haven't!
Just picked up one from Bell yesterday for my wife.
It didn't download any system updates. I didn't check the version number but she did experience that lag issue when clearing recent apps and wasn't too impressed with the camera quality. Hoping the update comes soon and at least fixes the camera quality. She also experienced a couple of FC's when trying to change the default notification sounds... Reboot fixed that.
I'm fairly certain the device is unlocked so I'm hoping the update can come directly from Alcatel and not have to go through the carrier.

Still no updates on mine. As for the Bell one being unlocked...it'd be best to verify it using a non Bell and non virgin sim card to test it. It'd be highly irregular for them to not lock it.
I bought mine unlocked from Amazon.com and use it on Wind mobile up here. Got the 7SQR-UER0 update OTA around a week ago.
Generally I have found it to be more responsive, scrolling lists in apps are smooth now instead of stuttering every time. Haven't really tested the camera quality though.
My DTTW is awful I hope they push the update soon!
I have emailed telus and Alcatel at PR.NA(at)alcatelonetouch.com to see if there's an ETA or update coming anytime soon
Hopefully we hear something back

In the system updates checker what firmware does it show you having? I'm asking all these questions because if it's similar to the usa firmwares then you could download the twrp backups provided of the os with all updates and flash to your device. Details on the project are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/idol-3/general/want-to-able-to-install-ota-updates-t3163745 You'd be booting twrp and doing a restore instead of a backup but same basic process.

When it comes to emailing TELUS, you'd be better off asking their social media team..so Twitter or Facebook. Email probly won't help, or will get you a very generic answer.

I've used twrp before with root and custom ROMs but am I able to use it to flash the 6045i firmware without rooting or using twrp as the recovery?
If so has anyone else tried it?
Does Alcatel have software similar to Odin where I can load other ROMs without rooting?
So any updates yet Canadians, still nothing for me on Telus.
Still nothing on Koodo (same as Telus)
Any updates yet Canadians??
Nothing on Koodo/telus yet (not surprised)
Has anyone gotten a useful reply from their carrier yet?

[Q] Updating to Lollipop

Hey guys
My friend just bought a new Huawei Mate 7 Gold yesterday and I checked the Android version and it says 4.4.2 Kit-Kat. He'd like to update it to Lollipop and since I have been doing such things for years on Samsung and HTC devices I thought I should help him out by checking the forum first. I found a helpful article about updating it to Lollipop OTA, however it is in German and the translation is terrible, so can anyone point me in the right direction?
As I said, the device is brand new and still has 4.4.2 unmodified Kit-Kat on it.
This is the article I am talking about: http://www.huaweiblog.de/huawei/huawei-mate-7-lollipop-update-download/
Thanks guys!
There's a thread dedicated to this in the general section
Thanks for you reply and for pointing me out to the right thread. From what I've read, it seems as though the Lollipop update is quite unstable nowadays and I should hold off till it's official, correct? I don't want my friend to go through a hassle because of it since he is not very tech-savvy.

I have installed lollipop 5.1.1 beta and its quite good but there's still many bugs. Maybe it is better to wait the official release.
I agree. If your friend is not tech savvy, hold first and wait for official release
It's usable as a daily driver, but no, not as stable as 4.4.2.
Generic overview:
-random reboots, not extremely frequent but they happen.
-some memory issues compared to 4.4.2
-a bit less battery
-some options not present
Hi, someone knows when will be release the official version of lollipop? No betas

I second that. While material design is nice to look at, the memory leak and battery drain are causing issues in some lollipop phones
hi,I tried alot roms but can not install them, device is mate 7 2gb ,MT7-L09 and rom is B137SP11,I think this rom is developed from any rom,by the way official huawei site in which rom avaible this one did not install too.I have another problem when I use ussd codes not change tr expression in area codes, may be it will occur from tr expression,I buy it from TURKEY I think it will not give permission to set new rom on it?thanks

5.1.1 Performance Experiences

Hey guys, I just saw that 5.1.1 has been available for my N915G for some time now. I would like to ask how people are feeling about it in terms of performance? I was on 5.0.1 awhile back and it was so laggy and slow that I eventually downgraded to 4.4.4 (at times, I wouldn't even be able to answer calls because the phone would ring but the phone was so laggy that the screen wouldn't turn on until after they hung up).
I'm very happy with the performance of 4.4.4 now but I do like the features in Lollipop so I just wanted to ask if it's safe to jump back in? I heard that it's not possible to downgrade after flashing 5.1.1 so I need to be sure before taking the dive. Thanks a lot in advance!

Thanks for the reply. Although I am always a little cautious when I hear people say there's no lag at all. I have never had a non-stock Android phone that was lag free (well, with the exception of my old Z1 Compact maybe). Even on 4.4.4 where the performance is far better than on 5.0.1, there is noticeable but tolerable lag at times. But still, I'm glad to hear you're having a good experience on it!

It depends on what version of the Note Edge you're on. Mine is SM-N915G (yours could be 9150, 915F, 915FY etc.) and sammobile.com listed 5.1.1 as being available. Then you need to flash it through odin. There are tons of guides around for that if you do find a compatible firmware for you.
I have 915G. Can you please provide any updated working guide /links?

Well I haven't done it yet myself but I'm pretty sure it works the same way as with previous firmwares. There are heaps of guides here and elsewhere that describe the steps to using Odin such as this one. And get the firmware from here.
Question for the more knowledgeable people: Does the baseband version on my current firmware have to match with the one I'm trying to flash from Sammobile?

Shouldn't matter, it's the "G" that's important.
There is both a Telstra rom and a generic rom of 5.1.1 so you should be good to go.
If you want to get root access you will need to flash a 5.1.1 root enabled kernel however...

Xperia XZ F8331 - Is it possible to enable the fingerprint reader after Nougat OTA?

Hey, this is my first post and I'm inexperienced with Android tinkering so I apologize if I've broken any rules. I searched but would like clarification as Nougat has changed things.
Is there any way to enable the fingerprint reader after the Nougat OTA for the US version of the XZ F8331?
I mistakenly didn't realize Nougat had changed things and unwittingly soft bricked my XZ the other day but managed to unbrick it and really want to avoid bricking it again.
It seems that downgrading to Marshmallow via flashtool is possible? so maybe it could be possible to downgrade to the UK Marshmallow and then get the UK Nougat OTA and then get the fingerprint reader to function that way?
Any rom you use that isn't the US rom will allow fingerprint to work.
Right, but flashtool isn't compatible with Nougat yet. I just got the idea of using Emma though, will look into it more soon
Yeah, you can just flash an MM rom and update to Nougat via OTA.
EMMA will only work with devices with unlocked bootloaders.
You are correct in your first thought. Just flash a UK FTF for MM and get the OTA Nougat update.
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately the Customized UK MM FTF seems to be no longer available from XperiFirm and I haven't had any luck trying to find it elsewhere.
How much does the Market/Operator matter? Maybe a customized MM FTF from another region is better? Anything I should be worried about?

Not really. Only a bit of bloatware, everything else is about the same.
You may be able to find an older FTF from here though
Thanks again! There is a Customized UK FTF for MM on the site you linked but it can't be downloaded for free unfortunately.

I am wondering the same - new F8331 on N OTA and enabling the fingerprint reader. Any luck on your end figuring this out?
I've been running customized NOBA in my Z5 for a while here in the US and have been very happy with it. Customized NOBA for the XZ still hasn't been updated to Nougat, so that could be an option. I don't get to unwrap my XZ until Christmas, so I've already downloaded the MM version currently on Xperifirm to re-enable my fingerprint sensor first.
I like customized NOBA because it has bloatware you can completely uninstall.
You should be able to google the central europe firmware (marshmallow) and use that. I just fixed 2 XZs yesterday after banging my head against the wall over the firmware.
Update to marshmallow using flashtool and then OTA update to nougat. Central Europe works perfectly and I get the LTE symbol (some people hated the 4G symbol even though it's the same). Finger print scanner works (both phones are US versions from Amazon).
Help me please

Nougat? Be warned...

Some owners here keep crying that they want Nougat.
I have a warning for you. Nougat soak on various devices has a history of problems. People that have sideloaded Nougat soak keep asking how to come back to MM (that can't do it fully, bootloader will remain on N). Now the official Nexus 6P started to have bootloops after upgrading to N: https://www.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p-users-experiencing-random-bootloops/
Maybe is related to Google's desire to "lock" down Android even more, maybe is just a plain design failure (bite more than they could chew) like in the case of Windows Me or Windows Vista, not sure. But be warned, if you rely on your phone for important day-to-day things, think twice before updating. Let others to be the guinea pigs.
PS: CM is not safer either, especially now after their announcement and when the future direction is not clear. Secondly, it is still based on Google's "N" code.

You should read again what a soak test is. This may be not stable and/or have bug(s). That's why it should not be share here. Ppl who flashed it just want to have that last software without knowing if it works well or if it's ready for daily use.
About bootloop, this is not something new while jumping to a new major version. I'm pretty sure flashing clean works a way better
Edit: took time to read the article, its clearly said that's a hardware issue. Maybe you should read it too....
And for CM, last news are clear enough. Say welcome to LineageOS. All ROMs are based on Google sources, since it's the only one....
Thanks for the advice, but this is your POV.
I know what a soak test is. The problem is that a LOT (all of them?) of those treads claim "this is an official Moto" or just not say anything about being a soak test... Only one poster changed the OP title after I pointed out that he shouldn't claim that it is an "official" release.
Hence my warning - it is not for people that know what they are doing (more power to you) but for the casual drive-by posters that are lured into a false sense of "security". How many threads we saw here about that?
Also, we see more and more that even the devices that had an official Nougat, are not trouble free. Hardware issue? Why it did happened only after update to Nougat? The Nexus 6P is not a new device... more than a year old.
Maybe my title is not the best choice, but I wanted to attract attention of those casual posters.
As for LineageOS... I am skeptic. That's all I will say for now, since it was more of a parallel.
lol moto user for past 3 years , and i do know what is soak test is happy to flash it , face the risk with smile not by crying . There is always a workaround for anything
soak test is meant to detect bugs and other issues . so the are official one but not the final one . they can make minor Changes to the os to make it error free .
so they are not officially realized but are official .
and i have also rested it . and i found it bug free all the time . so i dont thing there was need to make major changes and you can also get updates after it .

So basically you took the instructions found here and made video. Big deal... especially when you didn't actually downgraded a locked bootloader. Some users don't know that they will have to lose warranty if they side-load Nougat and want to go "back".
Anyway, the situation is that our devices don't have "official" Nougat and people that claim that are just misleading.
I'm going to sell my phone and running latest RR.
After reverting back to mm with relocking boot loader is safe or removing BL unlock warning is enough to sell my phone ?.
I'm aware about reverting to mm because last month i downgraded to mm for installation of latest soak without flashing got and BL, but then again installed custom ROM.
Current BL is 25.03.60r
I agree with OP. It is all very based on user experience but if you take a look through forums on this site you will see numerous complaints of bugs and issues in the nougat based Roms, soak test or otherwise. To anyone who says MM is bad is just not an Android person. It's something we as a community wanted for years and you be whining about not having the next version, which is my opinion isnt an upgrade, is really annoying. End rant.
