underclocking/undervolting/cpu crippling - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, what xperia Z5 kernels are available for underclocking, undervolting, or disabling some cpu cores?
Are there any custom roms available that are capable of this functions?
I really want to decrease the heat generated by this device, so much so that Im planning switch to other phones. Im considering Unlocking my BL to explore these possibilities.

It'll throttle itself if it gets too hot. Just use your phone normally

Yes it throttles, but it does not help.
Ive heard CM13 alpha have only 1core up during screen on.

You can edit the core_ctl if you are on a stock kernel to limit online cpus

yes, via custom kernel with e.g. Intelli_plug,
otherwise kernels with msm_performance have 4+1 on all the time

via core_ctl,
and that specific custom kernel has limited max frequency for both CPU clusters:

Set CPU Questions

I have a friend on an Android phone. Long story short, he needs to start having better battery life.
I know that having custom kernals allows for overclocking, but all he needs is the underclocking.
If I root his phone, set his profiles up without a custom kermal, would that still help his battery when setting up his max and min settings?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Yes, SetCPU should lower battery consumption. Configure your screen off profile to underclock the CPU when the screen is shut off. You will need to have your phone rooted for this.
you should notice a significant gain of battery life. This thread should provide some more information.

Not necessarily. Underclocking can sometimes use more battery when your phone is active. With less power the process takes more time to activate and that means more juice. Search in threads for "underclock", you'll find more infos on the subject.
Hey guys, what I'm asking is does he specifically need a kernal? Or, can he rootv and JUST use Set CPU?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Imo, he would get better uc/oc results with a modified kernel.

to answer you, no he can use just root and setCPU.
custom kernels help alot. but its not required.
Firstly: What phone does your friend have? Make and model, Android OS version, etc.
Secondly: If your friend wants to seriously underclock his phone, tell him to look into low-voltage kernels. He would probably just be better off with a custom ROM and such. If he has a question, tell him to type it into Google and the answer will most likely pop up.
Thirdly: SetCPU will always help with performance/battery consumption, you just have to be rooted for it to work and learn how to set up profiles properly. Once again, Google is your friend.

[Q] Default max freq?

I just installed Frnaco Kernel 32 build..
when i opened up the app thats also by him i found that the maximum frequency of my all four cores was 1.5ghz ??
can someone please clarify that?
besides is the 'hotplug' setting set to ON by default or we have to change it?
and if i dont make any changes at all just install the kernel, will it make any difference in the way the CPU works?
I am more than satisfied with the way the Nexus works on stock just a little more customization and screen color tuning is all i seek for!
PS i have been through the thread its a long one i did read quite a few but since i am new this query of mine may be stupid enough to even be there so posting it here!

Hi,
Just a question: isn't it 2,26 Ghz (2265600)?

Is it? Maybe. Thought it was just under 2.3 but I don't have stock frequencies so I was going off what I thought was "memory"
Either way though, not 1.5

Yes for sure
This is rounded up for 2,3 Ghz, 2,26 or 2,29 Ghz won't make a big difference. In the Nexus 5 I think it's 2.26.
EDIT: I have 2,26 Ghz in stock kernel

so i will jus ramp it up to 2.256 via app!!!!
i font know why it was under clocked on mine to around 1.5ghz!

thermal throttling is when cpu reduces the clock speed to prevent overheat! right? (its a question)
ya i am using Franco Kernel(32) and stock rom!
and Franco Kernel Update app!

Chaos Kernel. Comes with NXT to tweak to your liking, there are also preset profiles that are very nice. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2551441
I made my own profile but do what you will its your phone :good:

[Q] [RECOVERY] Is there a recovery like this for the N5?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2898705
I'm curious if there is a custom version of TWRP for the Nexus 5. I think I've seen screenshots that have temp of the CPU on the N5, but I haven't been able to find a custom version. If there is, could someone link me to it please? Thanks in advance!

What features are you after? Themes can add CPU tmperature such as this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...e-twrp-materialised-dark-light-play-t2915611/

Specifically something that doesn't run all CPU cores at max speed. If in recovery too long, that could lead to hardware damage.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've never heard if any troubles with phones using full speed during recovery. In that case you shouldn't play heavy games (or even simple games), watch movies, stream video and so on. Don't worry about this, the weak parts of a phone are battery, screen, buttons, orts, not the use of a recovery. This is cosmetic without any proven effect, like UV for preserving battery and so on. Even using it ten minutes every day won't cause any damage.

Not really. CPUs are built to be able to withstand this. Damage comes from excess heat and higher clock. I.e over volt.
Alright, thanks everyone.

Just in case anyone doesn't know this, CPU load / utilisation and CPU clock speed are not synonymous. A CPU can be clocking at 2 GHz or whatever but only be under 5% load. Sure, governors will usually ramp the CPU clock up under high loads. But if you think about the performance governor in Android for example, it sets the CPU at max frequency all the time, but the load will not always be 100% in fact it will hardly ever be 100%
Also if you look at a laptop, it will be clocking high, most of the time maybe not always max, but often not far off
Most android governors will get you to max clock long before 100% some even at 50%

Undervolt xperia z5

hi to everyone...i'm just trying to find a kernel for z5 .152 which let me undervolt the smartphone cause i can't undervolt with the original one or with the @AndroPlus kernel..thank you
Why do you want to undervolt?
Sent from my Xperia z5 using Tapatalk
i want to undervolt to improve autonomy and processor life
It might help to increase battery life as well
The amount you can safely undervolt on most devices will achieve you nothing in real life terms. U might achieve a bit cooler running but you're probably talking like 1-2 degrees

AndroPlus kernel works fine with undervolting, I was able to undervolt my Z5 by -300mv on all frequencies

What tool did you use to undervolt? I tried using device control, but it kept resetting to the default value when I left the menu.

well, with the current state,
you can only reduce the drain but not stop it (e.g. via http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...urance-tweaks-v1-tweaks-t3321841/post65494883 )
that's not an satisfying situation for me,
investigating ...

People do it mostly because of heat, not battery.

Download kernel adiutor, open it, give it root access, then swipe from the left side of the screen to access the options, go to cpu voltage, it will present you with the Little and Big frequencies, tap on any frequency to change its value to your liking and do note that 700mv is the lowest voltage you can set to every frequency.

Any kernels yet that allow overclocking?

I'd like to overclock my Pixel, which I understand is dependent on the kernel supporting it. Has one been released yet that'll allow overclocking? I've run both elementalx and franco so far.

But the Pixel never really lags or slow down.

You're right, it doesn't. It's great and I love it. But I'm an overclocker and benchmarker and like pushing hardware to the limit. Including my phone.
