On lollipop i could edit settings.db and change my hotspot gateway. I recently moved to marshmallow and those settings no longer exist there. Where are they now??

I've just installed SSHDroid Pro on my phone and by SSH'ing into it I've come across some interesting DNS behaviour. I was having trouble visting one of my servers over my home WiFi with a hostname from DynDNS.org - the Nexus S can't find it and nslookup fails. But when I try it from a PC at home it's all fine.
# nslookup xxx.dyndns-remote.com
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address 1: 8.8.8.8
nslookup: can't resolve 'xxx.dyndns-remote.com'
How come my Nexus S is using these DNS settings? It should be getting its IP address from a DHCP server on my LAN, and the DNS settings handed out by DHCP certainly isn't Google's DNS. Is it hard coded into the Nexus S or something horrible like that?

I think it may be one of the apps trying to get phone's IP for access.
Do you have your wifi set to never switch from wifi to mobile data while using wifi. If that isn't checked some phones switch back to mobile data.

I thought I had managed to resolve this but I haven't. If I connect to my WiFi and get a command line up in the Terminal app and run "nslookup machine.on.mylan" it shows me that it's using 8.8.8.8 as the DNS server. Surely it should be using the DNS server passed over in the DHCP settings when connected to the WiFi network? How do people connect their Android to machines on their private LAN if it can't use your own private DNS server?
I use VPN settings on Android and I keep it on. Once the phone rings then the VPN gets disconnected. Is there a way to keep it always alive over 3G/4G?

source: http:// docs.openvpn.net/docs/openvpn-connect/openvpn-connect-android-faq.html
Q: Why does the VPN disconnect when I make or receive a voice call?
A: Some cellular networks are incapable of maintaining a data connection during a voice call. If Android detects this as a loss of network connectivity, the VPN should enter a pause state during the duration of the call, and automatically resume after the call is complete. However if the loss of data connectivity isn't detected by Android, the VPN connection may time out and disconnect.
So at least try a vpn apps to get a keep alive feature, or reconnection ... even if I cannot totally trust vpn apps
Another idea could be also to use "Tasker" apps via "Secure settings" and trigger a reconnection after hang off the phone.
Hope it helps.
I used to use Tasker & Secure Settings log time back but for another purpose. I think I must be rooted for them to work. How do I configure Tasker to trigger reconnection?
