Recover Files Without Screen - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Oneplus One had water damage and the screen shorted. It appears to still be working behind the scenes - I can turn it off and on, it makes sounds and lights for notifications, etc. - but the screen is completely black and unusable. Luckily, most of my stuff was backed up to the cloud, but I still have a few files I'd like to get off it if I can. Does anyone have any idea how?
I had ADB, etc. set up on my Win 7 work computer, so I was going to use that, but whenever I plug it in, the computer wants to download and install an MTP driver, fails to do so, and leaves me unable to access the phone. I tried plugging it into my Win 10 personal computer and it shows up as a "functioning" MTP device in Device Manager, but not in Windows Explorer, so I'm not sure how to access anything on it. I installed the Samsung ADB drivers but it won't let me update the drivers for my MTP device at all, so I don't know how to associate them with the phone.

After reinstalling some drivers I can get it to connect as MTP. However, I'm not trying to download videos or photos. I'd primarily like to download some saved game files, and see what text messages I may have missed in the 3 weeks or so it took me to get a new phone (I had a temp phone with a different number during that time). Does anyone have any idea how I can do this? Is there a way to use the computer to switch the connected mode or to pull this info while in MTP?

[Q] USB device not recognized

Hi all, Ive had my captivate for about a week now and have been playing with it, I've been all over the web trying to figure out why I can't sync it with my pc Ive tried both my laptop with windows 7 and my desktop running XP. Nothing will work ive downloaded the drivers from Samsung's site and kies and kies mini with no luck. No matter what i do it says device not recognized windows has stopped the device and nothing shows up on the phones screen it just shows its charging, I'm guessing its something I'm doing but i just don't know what. Once I had so much trouble I connected a Samsung flight to my PC that's running XP and it worked just fine. Can anyone help me out i want to root the captivate so i can get take off all this att crap!!!
Did you mount the phone after plugging it into your computer? You should pull down the notification bar and it should give you the option to copy files to/from computer.
Also, set you usb settings to mass storage. It's in settings...can't remember where on stock.

Yes I have put the phone in all the different usb settings debugging, media player, mass storage, ask on connection, kies. When I plug it in the only thing that changes on the phone screen is its showing its charging it doesn't give me any option to mount. The same cable will connect my old Flight phone and that phone transfers files just fine. This really has me stumped.
You downloaded and installed drivers from this site? http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
This may sound random and stupid but are you plugging into a USB that is directly connected to the motherboard (back of the computer)? If you're on a laptop there is no way to test this...basically, there was some issues before of people not having their computer recognize their phone and the issue was too low of power from the USB.
Hopefully someone else can chime in as well. I'm pretty new to this too so I can only think of fairly basic things.

Don't really know where to start.

I'll try and make this short. Phone charges fine on comp. or charger. Phone works some what fine. Bluetooth seems to be getting quieter and quieter, but thats not the main issue. WMDC isnt working. I uninstalled it and restarted, I downloaded a newer version, I even tried about 5 cables and still the computer isnt even seeing any device what so ever. I was going to task 29 and reflash but now I'm affraid if the phones not even being recognized. Is there some setting or something that happened to of gotten changed that block my phone other than the obvious -virus protection.
Using windows 7. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Try a different usb port. I have had issues where the port I normally use for charging/syncing refuses to recognize my phone. I just use a different port and everything works fine. Even the first port starts working again. Windows 7 does seem to reinstall drivers again when I use switch ports, so patience is required.
Tried many different ports. Can't do a hard reset because : 1- I have some info and text that needs to be sync'd and : 2 my end button doesn't work anymore. Actually it was sticking so I kinda disconnected it. I would try to do a reflash from a SD card but like I said, I have stuff that I need sync'd and I'm not really sure if the phone just isnt going bad or software. I guess either way it wouldn't matter. Would like to learn how to sync with wifi.
I believe there is a wifi-sync method/program, but am not aware of the specifics. You could save your information to your sd card and simply use a usb reader to transfer the information that way. Or you can use the blutooth explorer on the phone to transfer to another blutooth device. Or I believe Google has a sync service so you can sync you information to your computers anytime and anywhere.
You can remap the "end" function to another key.
Your phone's usb port could have a cracked connection as mine disconnects while synced if I move the phone too much.
WMDC does not recognize the Mobile Device "MSW Vista and Later OS"
Try this procedure(s);
Settings, All Settings, Connections, USB Connections, clear the "Fast File Transfer" check mark under the Active Sync option. Restart the device and before connecting to the PC Double check to see if the the fast file transfer is still clear. then go ahead and try to see if your PC sees your device. Good Luck.

[Q] No USB connectivity.

How can I fix my problem of 'No USB connectivity' ?
My Samsung GS3 has stopped giving me the notification that I connected to my PC. It still charges, but I can't access my files. It's been happening for a few months. When I cable up, after a second, it chimes audibly (pong-ping), but the pitch fork icon for USB never shows, there is no notification, the PC never does anything. Drop box works, Wi-Fi works, NFC works, Phone works. Samsung model SCH-I535 running Android 4.1.1 on Verizon. I have not rooted, or ROM’ed but this may take me past that brink.
I've tried::
Numerous PCs and USB cables
USB debugging (& Stay awake & Unknown sources) checked and unchecked
Unmounted & remounted SD card
Asking the PC to look for new hardware
Removed and re-installed PC drivers both from Verizon
(Verizon_Wireless_I535_GSIII_Samsung_USB_Driver_v1_4_6_0.exe)
& from “Samsung GS3 Int ToolKit”
(SGS3_International_ToolKit_v6.0.exe)
:: but nothing has fixed it. :crying:
Please don’t tell me to use a Wi-Fi app, Kies, All Share Cast, or S Beam. I want my phone USB fixed.
Thanks;

What are you expecting to see when connected? The new Android o's doesn't mount the device as a drive letter - you have to access it via MTP. This means you won't see it as a drive. You need an MTP capable program to sync, or you can see the contents within the "portable device" entry.
Without proper, working MTP drivers, the phone may not show the connection. Under XP I had many issues getting the driver to work. I think other windows versions have similar issues. I had to force-load the drivers from the "eclipse" (I think) sub folder after extracting the files in the installer.

I fixed this by doing the following:
1. Reboot phone into download mode.
2. Plug phone into PC.
3. It should install some drivers at this point.
4. Remove phone from PC and remove battery to shut off phone.
5. Put battery back in and boot phone.
6. Plug phone into PC.
7. Profit??
Working, thanks!
schwinn8; I believe I had a different problem than what you were thinking; but thank you.

mastamoon;
As I tried 'download' mode, it worked, sort of, like you said. My PC found new hardware and installed MTP and ADB drivers. My procedure went more like this:
1. Remove phone from PC and remove battery to shut off phone.
2. Plug USB cable into PC.
3. Plug USB cable (other end) into phone.
4. Put battery back in and boot phone but…
5. As the phone boots, hold down Volume up and down
6. This should reboot phone into download mode.
7. PC should install some drivers at this point.
Phone was in safe mode, but another reboot changed that.
Their must be some magic in that old silk hat you found. Opps, sorry, wrong song. :victory:

Phone Doesn't Do Anything When Plugged Into Computer

I'm trying to transfer like 30 gigs of photos off my Honor 6x, but when I plug the phone into the computer, nothing happens. The phone charges, but it doesn't give any sort of option to connect. I've tried this on several computers and had the same results every time.
I haven't "rooted" my phone or anything.
I have the latest software updates.
Why isn't my phone connecting to my computers?
All my other phones I just plug them in, they give me an option to connect as a media device, and then it shows up on the computer where I can download the files.
Thank you.
It acts like that since first time you used it or not?
1- Did you unlocked the screen?
2- Have you set up MTP properly? Check storage settings.
Also make sure you use usb cable with data lines (not from powerbank )

Phone with no screen or touch function (but O/S power buttons working) can't access ADB to pull data off phone

Phone is Poco F2 Pro, beyond economical repair
Windows 10 can see it via bluetooth but can't receive files
Have tried various data recovery trials but none can overcome non ADB
Have tried installing Qualcomm Drivers & ADB (but go error code 10) on PC
Mi Suite sees phone but asks me to update the phone (which I can't do)
Is there anyway to get a video out or get over the ADB limitation?

If the screen is cracked and you can see the interface and you can connect the mouse to a usb, you will also have the option of installing MyPhoneExplorer Client. You have a chance to watch the phone screen in MyPhoneExplorer for PC and manage the backup.
MyPhoneExplorer Client starts automatically after installation, even after a system restart and is always ready to connect to MyPhoneExplorer.

Unfortunately the screen & touch functions are totally dead (my daily alarm has been playing on a loop this morning lol)
I'm going to try and boot into custom recovery mode and use ADB via CMD to access my files (doubt this will work as I have the standard ROM om the machine (4m34s into the video below)
I've edited the thread title as I can see it was misleading, thanks for the reply though much appreciated
So hitting a brick wall, I assume with a stock Poco ROM I won't have access to an ADB enabled boot?
Would it be possible to flash a custom ROM and gain ADB access that way?
Or is a replacement or donor screen & digitiser the only way fwd?
In my opinion, you can do nothing without access to the screen or enabled usb debugging in the system.
Decide for yourself about the profitability of replacing the display, taking into account that it will be done carefully and nothing else will be spoiled.
