help! my sensation cant be detected on my computer

Yes I know some will say install drivers or slide down the notifications.
But the problem is when I plug in, there isn't any notification for you to switch to disk drive mode.
Everything was working fine last week. There was no problems detecting my phone on my home and any PC at work. I have drivers install in my computer and can do adb commands
But now, when I plug in, it only shows the charging light.
I have done the following
On and off the USB debug option
Reboot phone
Try a 4 micro USB cable
Tried different USB slots on the computers
Use usbdeview and delete all HTC drivers and resinstall also not working
Remove my micro SD card and reinsert.
All doesn't work.
Strangely, one thing does. When I plug in the PC and I need to reboot, with my phone still plug in my PC. The notification will appear and I can do all things normally. But once I unplug and plug in again, same problem. Only can be solved with next reboot with phone plug in before hand. If windows is already loaded, it cannot be detected.
I though it was the rom. But I went to boot loader and same thing. It shows fastboot AC. If I do the reboot windows method, it will show fastboot USB .. will show fastboot AC if I replug in
I am starting to think my USB port on my phone is faulty.. any ideas?

Try plugging it and wait for a long time. Since I formated my computer it takes like 10-15min for my phone to show up after I plugged it. No idea what's causing it though.

Done that , charged it for 1hr plus, same

Best thing is try different cable, there is some issue with htc cable your pc sometime dont recognize phone, Other thing you can do it is keep ur phone connected to pc then boot your phone to Hboot or bootloader or fast boot, your pc will recognize your phone with generic driver.

hmm tried 4 cables.. same results..
Using the same cable, tried my mum's desireHD.. no problems detecting the USB each time..
Bootloader mode, it shows Fastboot AC
instead of Fastboot USB.. unless reboot my windows..
Oh i tired another micro SD card, same results.. :/

why mess with cables... AirDroid.
connect your phone to the pc via wifi.

but if you must connect via cable for something... have you checked the most obvious place? (sounds like you probably have but just in case...)

it cant even be detected, no notifications mate..

Flashed ROM......
Mine is doing the same thing. It didn't start until I flashed the new ROM. When in Windows, I just un-plug it, and re-plug it. Then it shows up immediately. But it always seems to show in flashboot.

hmm i even revert back to my original 1.35.707.1 RUU...
still not working.. i guess its time to claim warranty

try switching off firewall or/and antivirus i had same problem with eset 5 blocking phone so i put the stings to learning mode then plugged phone in and it created a new rule and shows up,then change setting back to what it was originally on

and if that isn't working try it with HTC sync. which gives you the drivers of the device.

Is there where USB cannot be recognized issue? If this is, I have a simple solution which took me forever to figure out.
I know this method sounds ridiculous, but give it a try. Unplug your charger connected to your computer/laptop and plug it in to a different outlet. Replug the USB with your phone connected, give it a sec, and it should work.

what operating system is your PC running? I was gonna say perhaps it might be a faulty USB port...

i have the same problem
What I do is go to devices and printers and then android phone then properties then hardware and disable the reenable the drivers. As soon as you reenable the drivers it should show up in disk mode. Hope this helps. This is the only phone I've had this problem with.

[Q] USB Mass Storage Won't Connect

I upgraded to Sky-ICS RC7.4 Speed yesterday and today. Obviously the USB mass storage was working earlier because I got the .zip file for the upgrade on the phone. Well, just a little while ago I tried to connect so I could pull those zip files off just to save some room and it won't connect.
I can charge the phone, the laptop(Windows 7) and the phone both make sound/vibrate when connected. BUT, with I go to "Connect storage to PC" it tells me to unplug the cable, which it hasn't before but I did it anyway. I unplug the cable press the connect button again it states to connect the cable, I do. Press the button to connect and I get the same result. I've tried enable USB debugging and try again and it states to disable, blah blah blah.
It's great that I can charge the phone via USB all day long but really sucky that I can't access any of my files via my laptop.
Anyone had this issue or know of any fixes that may alleviate this issue? I sure would appreciate your help.

FYI, USB drivers are installed on the laptop and reapplied after the the issue of not being able to connect USB mass storage...

update: I am able to see the two mounts in computer management on my Windows 7 machine but not able to access them through My Computer.
I was reading from other threads about a possible Windows issue, how I find it unlikely, but I did a system restore from an earlier date and that made no difference. It's still a matter of the phone connecting completely to the pc.
Also tried different ports and usb cables, no avail.
I could really use some input so that if need be I can access the files on the phone to either flash back to stock or at least modify the files I have on there now to let me be able to attach my mass storage. I'm liking the the rom it's just a few little things like this that are making me completely love it.

i have the same issue if i plug in to the front usb ports. no problems with the back and its only been since i updated to seans latest speed stripped ICS rom

I was having the same issues. I turned the phone off, took the battery out, and then restarted it. It worked.

Correct; you need to reboot your phone because you probably connected / disconnected too fast and the phone is bugged out now.

I'm on 7.4 speed stripped and its working fine for me. Did you try installing the Samsung USB drivers exe in the dev forum?

[Q] Trouble connecting Nexus 5 to new laptop in MTP mode

Not sure how many would read such a long post for a question, but here goes...
Any help is appreciated!!
1. Problem
In short, I plugged in my Nexus 5 to my laptop in MTP mode, it does not show up in "My Computer".
I just wanted to transfer files to my phone via USB, not even using ADB yet.
I have yet to solve the problem after googling around for a bit.
Relevant XDA threads that I remember reading are this, this, this, this and this.
I have tried numerous combinations of (un)plugging my phone / (un)installing drivers / rebooting my laptop and phone / switching usb ports / turning USB debugging on and off / connect in PTP mode / ...
As a workaround, I am now transferring files using the AirDroid app, which is really convenient with acceptable speed.
Still, it would be nice to know why the problem occurred and see if others have similar problem.
Below I will describe the devices I have on hand and more details on the failures I have encountered will follow.
2. My Devices
A. an old Galaxy Note
B. the new Nexus 5 with the stock micro USB cord
C. new laptop
- 64-bit Windows 8 Pro (not upgraded to 8.1 yet)
- only USB 3.0 ports
D. old laptop
- 32-bit Windows XP Home
- only USB 2.0 ports
3. Details
Scenario A. Nexus 5 not showing up in "My Computer"
Naturally, the first thing I tried is to simply plug my Nexus 5 in to my new laptop. I was used to Android devices working just like that!
However, my Nexus 5 does not show up in "My Computer" after a loooong wait.
On a closer look, my Nexus 5 (only) appears in the "Device Manager" under "Portable Devices" as "MTP USB Device".
It shows my device to be "working properly". However, I cannot uninstall/disable it when my phone is plugged in (normal?)
Frustrated, I decided to unplug my phone. I have the option to "Unplug Nexus 5" under "Safely Remove Hardware", but the operation always times out, so I simply unplugged it.
Then I tried with my Note using the same cable. It works flawlessly either in MTP mode or Mass Storage mode.
Scenario B. Nexus 5 shows up, but is really sloooooooooooooow
At some point, I turned on USB debugging.
With USB debugging on, my phone appears under "Portable Devices" as "Nexus 5" (and in some other places according to what drivers I have installed).
I was quite pleased for a few seconds as my Nexus 5 now shows up in "My Computer"!
However, it took a few minutes to list the folders I have under my phone's internal storage.
Attempting to copy a 12MB file to it gives an estimated time of over 2 hours.
Scenario C. Success?
After tinkering with it for some time to no avail, I was beginning to worry if I have gotten a defective hardware.
Then I remembered I had an old laptop stashed somewhere, so I tried connecting my Nexus 5 to that.
And... voila! It works without a hitch (MTP mode, USB debugging off).
A maybe useful note is that I have used both the old and new laptops to transfer files to my Note before.
4. Possible causes
While many seems to have solved the issue by simply unplugging and letting Windows reinstall the drivers, I have no such luck.
I sincerely hope that it is not due to any hardware defects since
a) my Note can talk to my new laptop through the same micro USB with no problems, and
b) my Nexus 5 can talk to my old laptop.
I feel that this is a driver-related issue but I am not sure.
Is it possible that there are compatibility issues with using USB 3.0 port (which should be backward compatible...) or a 64-bit Win 8 Pro?
Any help is appreciated!

It is so strange..
I just bought a USB 2.0 hub and connected my phone to my new laptop through it.
Guess what... it works perfectly!
Apparently my problem was that my new laptop only had USB 3.0 ports for me to test on?
Doesn't make sense... thought 3.0 is backward compatible and my old Note works on it!
Maybe I'm missing something but I'm happy it is solved for me now

I basically seem to have the same problem as you do.
My laptop also only has USB 3.0 ports and Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit installed.
The Nexus 5 doesn't get installed, in MTP mode it is just shown with the yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. Downloading different USB drivers including Google's and trying to manually install it doesn't work at all. I specifically checked that all older similar drivers are gone, so I doubt that older Android devices could be interfering.
On the other hand, as you noted, using an older computer with USB 2.0 works perfectly, I had the same result.
To be honest, I'm not much of a developer or Android tinkerer, so I'm not really making any progreess... In the end, I think I will follow your example and test it with a USB 2.0 adapter.
Did you manage to get it to work without this workaround?

I had a lot of issues with my S3 and my work computer (windows XP SP3) and it was because I had half installed some USB driver that windows tried installing.
I fixed the problem in device manager by manually uninstalling EVERY SINGLE USB DEVICE attached to the computer while I had my phone plugged in.
Word of caution: You'll probably uninstall your mouse/keyboard doing this.
Once everything was uninstalled I reinstalled the Samsung drivers and it worked fine.
The same computer only required me to install the Google drivers for my N5. If I enable USB debugging, I all of a sudden can't install MTP drivers, but USB debugging disabled works fine.

USB & MTP mode
I have the same problem with my Nexus 5. The only workaround to transfer files to my phone from a computer via USB cable is to enable USB debuging, set the phone to PTP mode instead of MTP and then it shows in My Computer as a camera. I can only access the DCIM and Pictures folders but for now I have to settle for this...I copy all the files I need to let's say Pictures and then using a file explorer (on the phone) I cut and paste them to the folders I wish...e.g. movies to Movies, music to Music and so on...

I had same problem. Developer Mode...USB Debugging ON worked.

I have this problem too, but I got it to work using a galaxy s3 cable. for some reasons the cable that came with N5 did not work.

Its usually just missing drivers.. You can get them straight from Google or a toolkit as mentioned! (P.s you need to download a little applet like thing from Google if you want to hook up your Mac to your n5)

The problem I am having now connecting is that my phone got wet recently. I dried it immediately and used dessicant to withrow the water and now it works (sort of). Now when I plug my phone into my pc, the usb debugging icon doesn't even show up.
I tried connecting to both my work pc and home laptop and they both say the same thing, that the usb device has malfunstioned and that windows doesn't recognize it.
Is it time for a new phone?

Sounds like the usb is shorting. How long did you let it dry. Give it more time and try it again.

Yeah maybe thats what happened. It's been drying now for about a week. The screen was the major problem at first but has since dried there mostly.
Hopefully it will come back. Would suck to have to buy a new phone because of that.

Going back to the subject of the thread: I am pretty sure that ADB drivers and SDK (I am confident that a lot of nexus users have their devices rooted and that means they must have the above installed) is what is causing some sort of conflict when trying to connect the Nexus 5 as MTP. After I reinstalled the windows (W8) on my computer and connected my Nexus 5 it took @1-2 minutes to auto install the drivers and then worked fine...I have no ideea what happens if I install ADB and SDK again...

If you tell the SDK not to install the drivers it'll be fine

The simplest and shortest way to connect google nexus5 with PC as MTP(Media device)
When I plugged it, there wasn't any yellow exclamation mark within Device Manager. So for me, the drivers were OK. But the device was not listed within my Eclipse DDMS. After a little bit of searching, it was just an option to change in the device settings. By default, the Nexus 5 USB computer connection is in MTP mode (Media Device).
What you have to do is:
Unplug the device from the computer
Go to Settings -> Storage.
In the ActionBar, click the option menu and choose "USB computer connection".
Then select Media device(MTP) or Camera(PTP) based on your requirement...
Plug the device and you should have a popup on the device allowing you to accept the computer's incoming connection..

I faced the same problem with mine...
Couldn't connect my phone with my laptop.
It installs the driver but not displaying the folder in my computer.
I uninstalled the Existing samsung driver in control panel.
Then the issue has been solved,
Or uninstall previous mobile's drivers
Try this!?!

Search for Universal Driver here in XDA. Had the same problem most of you are having. First try and BAM! Works like a champ...

Problem solved for me
I have no more issues what-so-ever after I unninstalled ADB & SKD drivers...Windows(8) installed my phone by itself after a restart and it works as it should in MTP mode and PTP mode.

Nexus 5 Is not seen on PC!

For some reason, my N5 can't be seen on my PC. It doesn't show up in device manager, and the phone itself doesn't prompt me for any kind of connection (mtp for example). I think its a driver issue, does anyone know a way to help?

Same thing with me. But I screwed something up.. I was having trouble with the drivers so I used the first guide on theandroidsoul that was posted in the stickied how to unlock the bootloader thread. After I uninstalled the driver in device manager on my win7 computer like it says in step 3 of the guide my computer no longer detects my nexus5 or nexus4. They both charge but they aren't listen in device manager/no connection sound when I plug them in.
I have restarted my computer a few times. Made sure usb debugging was on in the developer options.Toggled MTP on and off. I also checked on another computer that it wasn't the usb cable.

Same here! anyway to get those old drivers back?

Okay now this is weird. Anyone reading this must think I'm and idiot. I know for sure it wasn't working before. I used 3 different usb cables on both n4 and 5. I wiggled them and held them in place leaning in different directions just in-case the usb male end wasn't making the connection. I just tried the n4 one more time and it worked, then tried the n5 and that worked too.

this is what i did to fix mine
first i uninstall all drivers
went to device manager when i had my nexus 5 hooked up and it show nexus 5 with a exclamation mark so i uninstall.but usb debug has to be on.
now disconnect phone and turn usb debugging off .
after u do that connect phone and click on storage and click on 3 dots on corner and select mtp and drivers shoud install and it should work.
its all i did. keep trying.after uninstalling drivers reboot pc too.

I tried this a couple of times! PTP but MTP isnt...

If anyone was playing around with NRT or other similar tool kits & had universal USB drivers installed to unlock, install custom recoveries & root, that could've "wrecked" other drivers & settings on it (Windows 7 ??) - one way to restore the connectivity to the N5 is to use MS's System Restore, go back to the earlier date - it should be successful restoration after it finished & reboot. Strange & hard to explain, but it worked & it was too late at night for me while helping out to work the logics behind it. The laptop normally see the N5 upon usb cable plugging in & open with the prompt to read the folders & files.
No matter what, usb debugging off & on, it was no good - only recognize the N5 when switched to Camera (PTP) mode & can only see 2 folders, normally - MTP or Media Device is the default setting & all the "SD" folders visible ...
Once reconnecting via usb cable, let it sit for 1 or 2 minutes so that the drivers can "wake" up and install & recognize the device(s).
Grrrrr, upon further checking with my old faithful HTC, the desktop OS seemed to have "corrupted" the USB drivers and now it is only reading it as a Removable Drive & not as HTC device.
I would go back & follow Littlegreenalien's steps to see what happen and then attempt a System Restore, time to brew up some coffee this weekend & deal with this minor challenge. Wondering if it's the new KitKat thing - and, sidenote, both N7 (2012) and N5 are generating random bug reports even on rooted stock rom & kernel. :cyclops:

Didn't think of a system restore! Man that's a good idea, I'll try it when I get home. My N5 also generated a bug report around when I was trying to fix this problem!

This was the answer for me as well. All android drivers need to be uninstalled, then let the computer detect the N5 and install drivers

Let us know how it turned out, look at Window's Control Panel, do you see Portable Devices & under it, it should say Nexus 5, and click it to see the drivers (total of *.dll's and *.sys on my W7 Ultimate 32-bits OS)
Now that everything has been restored, "Auto Play" popped up after a pause of few seconds with usb making connections. Rebooted the laptop & now it's seeing the HTC again after auto reinstall drivers.
Just in case anyone, off-topic slightly, if anyone is playing with their Nexus 7 sideloading KitKat & small OTA patch, you should also see Android Device under the Control Panel & the Google Nexus 7 ADB Interface - with USB Debug enabled. But, with the Nexus 5 connected, it is showing "Google Nexus 4 ADB Interface" while showing it as N5 under Portable Devices ... what the heck !
I'm going to leave it alone for the time being, if it ain't broke & is working, leave it alone & let it be. Call me lazy, TGIF - not going to go thru the routines of uninstalling drivers, rebooting & all that and ruin the webcam, camera & other usb drivers loaded on the laptop. I can run ADB and Fastboot commands, etc. just fine now.

When I plugged it, there wasn't any yellow exclamation mark within Device Manager. So for me, the drivers were OK. But the device was not listed within my Eclipse DDMS. After a little bit of searching, it was just an option to change in the device settings. By default, the Nexus 5 USB computer connection is in MTP mode (Media Device).
What you have to do is:
Unplug the device from the computer
Go to Settings -> Storage.
In the ActionBar, click the option menu and choose "USB computer connection".
Then select Media device(MTP) or Camera(PTP) based on your requirement...
Plug the device and you should have a popup on the device allowing you to accept the computer's incoming connection..

[Q] Nexus 5 not connecting to computer (usb), does not show in device manager

Hi,
I would like to see if I can get anyones assistance with solving my problem. I have lost the ability to connect my Nexus 5 to my computer via USB. I had previously been able to connect the phone without any problems.
Connecting my phone to PC charges the phone but no drivers are loaded, nothing changes in device manager and I cannot see a change in windows explorer to view the memory card.
So far I have tried the following:
searches on various sites
rebooting phone, starting in safe mode, wiping all data, performing a hard reset
connecting other phones to usb cable to check that it is not a charge only cable, also trying several other USB cables
connecting phone to other computers
connecting other phones (HTC) to load drivers (then uninstalling drivers)
displaying all hidden devices in device manager and removing all drivers that resemble something to do with mobile phones
uninstalling programs I no longer require on the PC
using "wugs nexus root toolkit" to uninstall and re-install drivers
checking & unchecking MTP, PTP, developer options, USB debugging in various combinations to elicit a response from the computer.
I have also tried to visually check the connections of the USB port on the phone wondering is there is a break but I cannot see very well.
does anyone have any further suggestions to get this phone connected to a PC?
my only last thought is to attempt to open the phone and check the resistance of the plug connections.

Have you tried enabling and disabling usb debugging while plugged in?

Are you sure you're using a data usb cable and the usb port is good?

Same Issue
same thing happened to me today when i connected the device to PC.
Mine says unknown device on PC under other devices. so i hope my USB port is ok.but im not using the original SUB cable. i wonder that's is the issue. but it didn't bother me until today. my original cable is at my friend's house.
Tried updating drivers manually. But following error message occurs once i select the drivers folder and hit ok.
Windows was unable to install your unknown device
Please help.

so, not really a solution but while at work my phone fell on to a nice rock cracking the screen. I have replaced the phone and the new phone connects to the pc fine, drivers come up without a problem (I will put this down to a fault with the phone)
