I've been searching for a real answer to this question high and low... and yet the answer doesn't seem sufficient.
I am using the stock Gmail app (2.2). I'm trying to get push emails -- but it doesn't push, mostly because it doesn't seem that my account syncs very often even with auto-sync turned on. For example, I went to the Account window at 2:58pm, and it said the last sync was at 2:33pm, so I wasn't getting "push" email in the interim at all.
How do I consistently ensure that my Gmails arrive regularly and avoid this sync issue that obviously isn't a real "push"? I can't be getting emails on my phone 25 minutes after they're sent. And there's no way to set the frequency apparently, at least not with the Gmail app.
So does the lack of response mean that nobody knows the answer? Surely I can't be the only one this is affecting.
You are not alone ;-)
I am having the same issues today, (I flashed and unofficial version of gingerbread on my Desire yesterday)
With Android 2.2, I had no problems, I have no idea what the sync frequency was, but it seemed adequate. With Android 2.3, I am having the same kind of issues. My laptop knows I have new mail, but my phone doesn't.
If it is not possible to find out or update the sync frequency, then there are some gmail notifier apps in the market which may provide an acceptable solution.
Interesting, this was a problem for me always (2.1 and now 2.2). I thought it was attributed to the internal Android sync which seems to me to occur every 30 minutes (even though the "auto sync" checkbox should mean a little more frequently, no)?
What Gmail notifier apps would you recommend, and do they bypass the internal "Accounts and sync" settings? That's not the ideal solution at all, but I'll take it if it means my Android will check emails more frequently -- like as they arrive.
Hi,
I had the same problem after flashing CM7.
Under menu, accounts (Were you can see all accounts you sync with) press on Gmail account. There you need check if everything is activated.
On my phone the checkbox for sync gmail was missed. Contacts and calender where checked

Gmail is checked for me. My settings are correct. Like I said before, it's syncing every 30 minutes. That's not acceptable if my emails are really "push" as this doesn't seem like "push" to me.

Possibly a stupid question, but, on your main accounts and sync page, do you have "background data" checked? I have that checked and auto-sync checked and I get my G-Mail on my phone about 10 seconds after I get it on my desktop. Just asking because I don't see that mentioned anywhere here. BTW--I am running CM7.
I have Background data, and Auto-sync both ticked. I have now been waiting several hours for emails (that I know are waiting) to appear - they haven't, so I'm not even getting 30 minute responses.
The "Sync all" button has no effect either, so I guess that my problem is different
That is using 2 gmail accounts, both correctly setup - in theory.
OK, my problem is fixed. I switched off auto-sync, then I was able to manually sync everything: mail, calendar, contacts, books. I then switched auto sync back on, and now I am being notified of email from all sources in 2-3 minutes.
Yup, Background data is on. maersi - this might be my issue. Trying it and will see what happens.
My new mails notifications stopped?!?!?! Huh? Any ideas?! I have to manually go into the Gmail app and click Refresh to see my new mail. I'm on WiFi.
Funnily enough mine have not been working lately either.
---------- Post added at 11:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 PM ----------
I've just fixed mine. Try this: Settings, Accounts and Sync and make sure your gmail account has a green circle at the end of it. Mine was greyed out so I clicked on it and sync everything, now it works. Also make sure you have set up ringtone and vibrate for the account you want to use.
I checked that earlier... that's not my problem. It seems like it takes a really long time though. Is there a way to decrease the checking period. Is it push based mail? Or does it have to poll?
AFAIK GMail is push email
Sent from my HTC1S
Was it working and suddenly stopped notifying? If that's the case, try erasing cache and data for Gmail app inside Settings->Apps->Gmail. You'll have to reconfigure Gmail itself (not the gmail account), but it will probably fix your problem.
bye!
I turned off sync and turned it on again and that seemed to work. The push seems to be really slow though.
It seems very some time-ish, I'm watching my notifications very carefully now. Most messages I received took about 2 mins to get to the device... I'm currently waiting on one now near 5 mins.
It looks like Google waits for atleast 2 before they push the message though. Also, I notice that it doesn't seem to push notifications while I'm on 3G/HSPA.
Just replying for me own use... I'm in Jamaica, using Digicel's network. The solution was to just use an APN with web.digiceljamaica.com and no other settings (except APN TYPE as default). No username, no password, no proxy, nothing else.

Hi all,
Moved from a Galaxy S3 to a Nexus 5.
Everything is working great, with the exception of the stock Email app syncing with an Exchange account.
I connect to a zimbra server using the same settings as on he gs3. I connect fine and get all my email loaded. The issue is that syncing of the inbox doesn't work. Sub folders seem to but the main inbox will not even manually sync.
I have cleared the caches, removed and re-added the mail account and I still have the same issue. I can send emails fine. I have also factory reset the phone and still have same prob. Syncing is ticked in every possible setting and my gmail app push syncs fine.
Any ideas? I am at a loss and need my company email as I work on call in the evening and weekends.
Thanks!!
I have the same problem with my N5. My exchange email account would start working again if I force it to re-verify the account settings. But after a while, it would stop working.
I've been using Nexus phones since Nexus One. This is the first time we see an update on the default email app. But it doesn't look like Google has done a great job verifying/QA their app before releasing it to public.
I'm thinking to open up an official support case with Google support if you haven't already done so.
Actually, haven't you tried changing the Security Type in Incoming settings from "SSL/TLS" to "SSL/TLS (Accept all certificates)"? I just changed it on mine, and waiting to see if it helps resolve the issue.
I'm having issues with stock email client and company exchange, too.
When set to push, as i usually did on the n4, it won't let the n5 properly go to sleep, but phone keeps awake, and consuming quite a lot of battery overnight.
Sync also has stopped yesterday, but started again 2 hours later, therefore I'm not sure wether it's the n5's or exchange's fault.

Thanks for your replies. Yes I have tried this, I have tried every security method (except none, which defaults to SSL/TLS anyways).
I notice if I look under Accounts > Corporate and then my Exchange account, the sync / cancel sync animation is on a constant loop. My S3, for example, just sais 'Last sync at xxxx'. etc. Do you guys notice this also?
Something deff not right with this. How do you log a ticket with Google support? I have tried with Google Groups but getting no response.
Thanks.
Same problem here. Refreshes fine when I manually sync but push is not working. Was working fine on my Galaxy Nexus/Jellybean
I'm not experiencing any of these issues, my sync is working fine, as is the app and battery usage

I have had to move off the stock app and onto K9. My problem is that the stock app is deleting emails from the server when deleted from the phone, even when I make sure it is set never to do so. My account is a POP account and I have never had this problem with any other app on any other device. I tried recreating the account but it was the same problem.
6 people in the company I work for got a Nexus 5. I tried to set up one of their email accounts yesterday, but it wouldn't do anything. It seemed like it accepted the account, but it wouldn't sync any old mail, and it wouldn't notify about new mail. New mail would only show up about 15 minutes after being sent, and only after the inbox was manually refreshed.
Tried K9 mail. Same thing. I have never had any luck with K9 mail, though.
I'm hoping Google fixes this rather quickly. I'm a developer and I need my work email to always be available, because I am essentially on-call all day.
It seems like Google, in their rush to get KitKat out, did way less QA this time around than they have in the past.

This is similar to what I am seeing. After initial sync, I would never get any new messages. Check your subfolders if you have any, these seem to sync fine.
Whats the process to raise this with Google?

Subfolders were not syncing for me yesterday, however, I'll have to wait until my phone comes in today to really test this. Most of the people I work with don't set up their subfolders correctly in Zimbra because they can never get the filtering to work, and I am always too busy to do it for them. As a result, they make subfolders, but just drag-and-drop what they want in that subfolder from the main inbox-- an utter pain in the ass.
In 4.3, "Take Bug Report" is one of the choiced under Developer Options. If that is still present in 4.4, that would probably be the best place to do it.
If that doesn't work, there is always this: http://source.android.com/source/report-bugs.html
Same as I'm seeing too. Initial email download worked fine. Manual sync works. Push sync is not downloading new emails

Got mine working eventually by following this youtube video - GT5uHXLO298 - sorry won't let me post a link as I'm new! Just search YouTube for this reference number.
Took 3 attempts. First time it got stuck in a sync loop. Second time it stuck at waiting for sync. Third times a charm and now getting push emails.
Slick Google, real slick!

Thanks for posting the link to the video. My auto-sync data is ticked in the Data Usage setting. If I turn off then back on again, it still makes no difference to the sync.
The thing with my issue is that I cant even manually sync, if I try, it does not update any emails which have been delivered to my Outlook client. The fact it only affects my Inbox is strange too, my subfolders sync fine.

Yes, I'm getting the exact same issue. Exchange push sync is working fine, but the e-mail app is keeping the phone awake. My phone went from 100% to 41% battery in 4 hours! I have changed the setting to check mail every 5 minutes rather than push to see if this helps in any way.
I have raised this with our Zimbra provider, and they have said they have seen this on another 4.4 device and are currently investigating. Still not sure if its a Zimbra and/or Email App issue at the moment - I am leaning towards a Zimbra issue but will wait and see.
For now I would personally think oft an KitKat issue, as my problem persists with an MS Exchange Server, not Zimbra.

Zimbra Exchange Problems
I'm having all the same issues with Zimbra Exchange on my Nexus 5. Sync will work the first time. Then it will either stop or get stuck in a sync loop.
I have just been playing with the settings and seem to have gotten it to work for a short time (well more than it has done so far)..
On the mail profile set the Days to Sync from 3 days to 'All'. I also un-ticked the 'Sender Image' under General Settings. After a few mins, it ceased pushing emails again, and the sync loop was showing under account sync settings. Its like it was working whilst it performed its 1st sync, then died straight after
My corporate email account has been pushing and such just fine since I set it up yesterday, we run an Exchange 2007 server at my office. Not sure why it isn't working for you guys..

Hi everybody,
I have the sames trouble with my new Nexus5.
I had a Nexus 4 with an Exchange Push Account and a Zimbra Push Account. No problem !
Yesterday,I configured my Nexus5 with exactly the same configuration. And that is a tragedy !
With a perfect similar configuration, the Nexus5 is unable to synchronize email for Exchange and Zimbra ... For Zimbra Sync loop and drains the battery.
Let's hope Google responds quickly
I am reassured that I am not alone
Since Lollipop upgrade I do not receive notifications for every new email I receive. There no longer seems to be a setting for Push notification in the mail settings but there is a setting 'receive notification for every new mail' and I have checked that in each (3) Gmail account I have. None of them work! I checked Sync settings in all accounts and it is set to on as well for each. Possibly this is a Sync issue Google is having?
Unlike other threads about 'silent mode', I want to hear that I have an email as soon as I get one! I have Notifications set to 'ALL.'
I have the exact same issue. I tried rebooting, clearing gmail data and cache, turning off sync and back on again, turning gmail sync off and on again etc etc.
Only thing I haven't tried is removing the google account and re-adding.
Not sure if this is a coincidence but I noticed it wasn't working after I installed Nine for exchange emails.
Gmail app has always only been push. There's never been an option to not push.
If you have inbox installed, that may tale over notifications - which by default doesn't notify for every bundle.
Otherwise after an upgrade, maybe a factory reset is required.
No interference from "nine" here.
It isn't pushing. I have to manually refresh to force the Inbox in the Gmail App to sync/refresh. I am getting no email notifications at all for 3 separate Google Accounts. I only use the stock Gmail App, nothing else. It was working fine on 4.4, not so much on 5.0. I expect when there are updates for there to be issues. I would find it hard to believe I am the only one. I hope others will see this thread and something is figured out.

Pushing and notifications are 2 different things. So what you actually mean is its not syncing?
Anyway advice still stands, may need to wipe

Yes and by not syncing I am not getting notifications. Calendar seems to work. I get notifications from the calendar. I don't get them from Gmail. It is reporting a sync error in the account settings. Data wipe isn't cool but I guess it is all backed up in the cloud.
I fixed it by removing my Google account from settings, accounts. All good now no reset required

OK Glad you fixed it, however I'm still hazy on the problem
Syncing = delivering messages to your phone via PUSH
Notification = Once delivered, notifying you
So it was syncing and new emails were appearing in the app, but you weren't getting the notification only?
I removed all accounts and added them back. It was also effecting Hangout messages. Everything appears to be working as it should!
The symptom that I noticed was not receiving a notification when I sent myself a test email. The cause of that was in fact a problem with Sync. When I opened Gmail the test message I sent myself was not there unless I manually refreshed. Obviously if it is not Syncing then you don't get a notification, the only part I noticed right off the bat. I was also being sent Hangout messages and not getting notice of them. Again launching the app forced it to refresh.

Thanks for clearing that up
I bought Moto G 2015 three weeks ago, and phone has been upgraded to MM on first day of use.
I used Galaxy S3 for many years before and never had gmail sync problems, but now I have.
The problem appears in no push message that I have new gmail emails. Only when I open Gmail app or sync manually, I can see new emails.
I have many apps installed, such as Viber, Facebook Messenger, Mail.ru (another email client), all messages from them are recieved immediately. The problem is only with Google.
Does anyone have the same problem? Is there some solution of this? All that could be done was done. I loose all hope to fix it.

For some stupid reason this is the default behavior of Gmail...
Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Google and turn the slider on for Gmail, should be good after that. Sometimes have to press the overflow menu and select "Sync Now" to sort of jump start it.

Had to ask... Many people have noted that is off by default, depends how you setup your device in the wizard.
I assume you have cleared caches, cleared data on Gmail, tried removing updates and reinstalling them, etc?

Yes, I did all of this abovementioned things.
I just added gmail account to another email client (mail.ru), and tried to send several emails to myself -- notifications come momentally!
It turns out that is someting wrong with gmail app? But the same version works good on wife's phone.
I've had this issue intermittently as well. It did not occur with 5.1.1. Seems to be a bug introduced with Marshmallow. I cleared the data of the Gmail app and that seems to have mostly cured it for now.
bug or feature? i had the same issue...
a battery saver function seems to be the culprit for me
settings > battery > menu > battery optimization
turn optimization off for gmail
it went back to getting mail that shows up in the middle of the nite
[i turned the battery saver off and still get good life
but i'm not using the phone for much now...]
I cleared cache of gmail, rolled back to firmware version, turned off battery optimization for gmail -- nothing helps me.
But yesterday I installed many others email clients, which work with gmail -- EVERY of them notifies about new emails monentally, but not gmail. And EVERY of them has battery optimization turned on..
Could this be related to Doze mode? When in Doze mode synchronizations are "dozed" and can be delayed up to 30 minutes, typically 5-10 though... Didn't even think of that

It seems that I resoved the problem!
Apps -- google play services -- manage data -- clear all data
Since I did this, I have every new email notification and sync! I tried to find solution all this time.
Battery optimization is on for gmail and all work as it should right now.
I hope.
Happiness was short. In a hour I send ti myself email and didn't receive notification. Went to google account sync settings and there was exclamation mark near gmail. Pressed to sync mannually and new email has come.
That's definitely problem with Google sync..
Nothing remains, but must install other email client.
