Random Shutdowns - Any input? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Recently my Nexus 5 (with original battery) began shutting down randomly. When it does this, it shuts down and boots back up to the google logo, but does not go as far as the boot animation. If I then turn it off manually with the power button, and turn it back on, it'll boot up normally. My attempts at a fix/diagnosis were as follows:
1.) Switched from PureNexus rom to a stock rom - same issue
2.) Switched from blu_spark kernel to ElementalX kernel - same issue, and no last_kmsg to look at after the shutdown in any case
3.) Was on F2FS, so formatted back to ext4, fastboot flashed stock image from May update, formatted back to F2FS using TWRP, installed PureNexus & ElementalX - same issue (today)
My thoughts now are that it could be related to F2FS, although I've never had issues with this in the past, or it could be a bad battery, although my battery discharges like normal with none of the other side-effects I've seen from others posting about a bad battery.
Any input on next steps or ideas to diagnosis the issue?
Thanks!

It's about power button , not the software.

[Q] Phone reboots when trying to Power off

Flashed this kernel :[Kernel]Skyrocket[2.6.35.14](v0.0.8)OC~1.73GHz/GPU OC/OTG/UV/SLQB/BLN[Jan-08]
Its a great kernel and thanks so much to whoever delvelpoed it but i am having a problem when trying to shutoff the phone. When i press the Power button and slect to Power off. The phone goes black, vibrates, and then restarts. Is there a fix for this? Anything would help because this is a great kernel. Thanks.
I m guessing this is faux123's kernel and if it is what version are you running.

Running kernel version: 2.6.35.14 on Android : 2.3.5
I'm really only looking for a kernel that let's me use bln control on the skyrocket, is there a better kernel that you know of?
Yes use romracer's kernel its good stock with bln and boothanimation.

You need to unplug the power cord before selecting "power off", is a work around fix for the CM7 w/Da_G's kernel, and I bet it works for your trouble as well.
To add my experience:
My SGS2 runs Android 2.3.4, kernel 2.6.35.7, GINGERBREAD XWKI4). I've had it for just under a year and it has always run the stock Samsung ROM. My phone's not rooted. I've never had any trouble of the kind I'm about to discuss so far.
Today my phone has begun to restart when I power if off. Googled around, saw some people had such problems because of SD card problems. I unmounted the card, removed it, put the battery back in (yes the phone boot up on its own when I inserted the battery). Same problem with no SD in.
I then saw a thread that some people had the phone on the charger when trying to power off (or the phone showed being on the charger when it wasn't - thunder on battery level); my phone shows no thunder and it's not on the charger.
My 8-year old son has taken the phone for a spin today (which means he fires off about a dozen apps aftes he tires of taking pictures and Cutting the Rope).
Any thoughts about how I might go about diagnosing this? Besides rooting my phone, taking a Titaium backup and hard resetting?
Thanks
Nikolas
In the future Nickolas please refrain from resurrecting an old thread and post a new one. Also u are in the wrong section, u want the original Samsung Galaxy S2, not the skyrocket (this forum), or the T-Mobile T989, but the i9100
Yes, I realize I posted in the wrong place; I'll post it on the i9100 forum. Thanks for the heads up.

Sky ICS 4.2F-4.5A stalls in reboot

Anyone one else experiencing a stall when rebooting using SKy ICS 4,2F-4.5A?
If I reboot either from CWM or from using the drop down or the power button, the phone hangs up with a black screen and all the LED buttons lit up? Then I have to hold the power button down to do a hard reboot.
I have reflashed numerous times and have come through numerous updates and this one issue persists.
Anyone?

No problem here. You have installed busy box, fixed permissions, and the usual stuff?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I got the exact same issue, busy box installed, permissions fixed. Tried flashing everything again didn't solve it, kernel etc.
The only thing I didn't try is radio, are you using rogers radio as well?
Also it happens if I just try shut down the phone.
Try doing a backup in cwm, then just immediately restore that backup... often fixes that problem for me on sky ics.

I got it resolved but only by fluke. Flashed 4.2-5b as well as the CYMBALINE kernel (an attempt to resolve bluetooth connection issues) and now everything boots fine.
Thanks
I flashed the kernel without it being solved. I did the backup+restore and I think it seems to have fixed it, I'll do some more checking tomorrow kinda late here but thanks!
Btw after you flashed 4.5a you didn't need to flash b
Had the same problem after doing a fresh 4.2 R2 base install. I let the phone fully cache (5 mins or so) and I tried rebooting to CWM to flash the 5A update and the phone hung on shutdown and my cap lights stayed lit up. I realized I forgot to install busybox after 1st boot-up per the OP instructions. So I held power button for 10secs, rebooted, installed busybox and it rebooted fine into CWM to flash update. Weird, never seen that before.

Running Rogers ICS stock here rooted and busybox first, then flashed the modded UXCLF3 Kernel, hangs on the Rogers animation and the touch keys stay on whenever I try to shut down or reboot the phone, have to pull the battery all the time, trying the Backup + Restore route now, hope it works otherwise I'll have a brick and a phone that won't turn off

It worked for me, worst case you can hold the power key for 10s to turn it off.
The issue me and I think also the other guy had was black screen and touch key lights.

This has been answered in the dev thread. Here is the solution . You need to flash it with cwm touch. I have no idea why but with cwm the older cwm you get hung up rebooting or shutting down. It will also hang when fixing permissions. I have also read that twrp was working also.
Cwm touch can be found here half way down the thread.

I had it and I'm using cwm touch 5.8.1.3 .
if all else fails check the md5 checksums of all downlads, or redownload and check its md5, use touch cwm or as sean is using it now twrp recovery, and read my sig

Phone enters recovery mode when I connect to DC charge

Hi all,
I searched the forum but couldn't find a related problem.
My case happens like this:
I close (shut down) the phone properly. Then I connect it to DC Charge and it enters the recovery mode. Is there any reason and solution for this problem?
I'm using TheFrankestain Mod (on original DDLF2) + S3 Theme by Androman1507 + Bam bck kernel fix 14.
I have been using this rom for 1,5 weeks and unfortunately didn't realize if it was happening from the beggining.
I will be grateful to any help...
(Edit:Correction)

Sorry but this started to happen again. I realized that it happens just after I take a cwm backup... I'm using Bam kernel 14fix. Is there any permanent solution for this? I don't wanna remove the battery everytime...
try custom roms.
I dont think its related with rom, because i tried another alarm app and it worked fine. My problem is with stock alarm app..

[Q] AT&T bootloop or suddent reboot

Hi, i have been looking for answers on the forum, and i learn new things but not how to fix this or what is causing it.
I have buyed i997 from a reseller. He sayd it doesnt work because it have bootloop, but i thinks that is not too much problem getting it working again, so i started searching for the pc drivers n software, then i find here in the forum the stock rom with and without root, i tested them both with odin and the bootloop stills present. I wipe cache and do a factory reset but it keep bootlooping, then think maybe if i update to latest AT&T rom, but no luck.Sometimes the phone just start and theres no bootloop but its very rare and most of the time when i get to the lock screen or setup manager suddently a gapps or something crash and my phome freezes and reboot. I flashed the carbon-jb-v1.6 and suddently it worked fine, no more bootloop and everything smooth,no crashes etc.. then i installed Facebook app and when i was ttyping a message the phone froze up and then restarts, and the bootloop came again, and im stuck on it, and when i pass it, which is very rare, i start typing info in the startup manager and the phone freezes and reboot.. I wipe/format cache, dalvik, factory reset, formated system and data before and after flashing the carbon rom again and it keeps bootlooping. Somebody have similar problems or know how to fix it?
Thanks
P.d. sorry for my bad english.

Thanks man, but you think it can be the power button? When i unplug the battery and put it again the phone doesnt turn on or something, and when it boot up when i lock the screen with the power button it works fine. I set the cpu governor to conservative and since yesterday i didnt have any problem, but sometimes the phone reboots when typing, i think its someting with the processor or when the phone have little ram or something.
Thanks.

If you ran the phone on complete stock GB or FROYO and you are getting boot loops, it may be a hardware issue.
One of the few things that will give you boot loop with the samsung logo while using the phone is the power button.
Either way, it's no big deal to open it and clean it up to see if the problem goes away.

Thanks bud, I will try cleaning the button. Also I want to ask, is there something to log everything when the phone start? Or something to test the hardware functionality?
Thank you for your time

Bootlog Uptime will keep a record of all boots from an Android OS perspective ... It will also track crashes... It won't track events outside of a complete restart (i.e. power button bootloops.. But those are pretty obvious when they occur)
For hardware testing, try Z Device Test... That won't tell you about the buttons though... If your screen turns on without pressing power button or from any other standard event (like receiving a text or a phone call), or the phone restarts by itself, time to get cleaning..

Hey thanks, that was very useful.. i risky miself to do a stock flrom flashing with pit checking the Nand erase all option in Odin 3.07, and the random reboots are gone . Now i have one question, Do i need an special kernel for JB 4.2.2? i plan to flash the Carbon-jb-v1.6 rom but i dont know if i need another kernel
I'm glad to hear you solved your issue.
For JB, use the kernel provided with the rom.

S7 Exynox charging problem when OFF

Hi,
already searched and found that I am not alone, but a solution I did not find so far.
I Flashed the Oreo Lineage 15.1 via TWRP.
Before flashing, I did not change anything else, the bootloader is factory-versioni, which probably is from Nougat OS.. So this might be the cause..
Anyway, when plugging the charger when phone is off, I got the battery-symbol with a "flash" sign. If I disconnect, it remains as-is. Have to force reboot by holding the buttons 8 seconds.
Charges normally if kernel is running..
Any idea?
Please help.
Thanks
Joe

My old s4 did this on occasion. I think the fix was to let it charge fully, reboot with usb attached, then pull cord. Next charge power off before connecting usb and should charge normally. One other time I think I had to fix via external SD format then full wipe and reflash rom but that was for force closes I think. Sorry was so long ago now hard to remember!

AOSP ROMs for S7 are bugged and not ready for daily usage in my opinion. Better try stock based ROM like Helios (excellent battery life) or SuperMan (tons of useful tweaks and mods - ROM I personally use and recommend)
If you still want to stay on AOSP download latest build of LOS 15.1 3.3.2018 from changelog: "Fixed charging with device powered off"
