System R/O? (in TWRP backup) - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've not noticed it before but using a new recovery for MM and in TWRP backup, there is now the option to select a System R/O partition.
Its not selected by default and I'm sure its not the same as the 'normal' system partition.
Do I need to select this for a full nandroid? Its 3.x Gb so its not small. Or is it something I should never be touching no matter how I flash?

System R/O" option clones the whole partition instead of copying files in partititon.
We do not need that anyway. For nandroid you can leave it unchecked

Plagiarism.
Give credit where it's due or put quotes around what you say so people understand it's not you saying this.
What you did was very rude even though I understand you did not mean to be.

Yeah, but where does this end? I mean, everything you say was already said by someone. Learnt somewhere, somehow. Should we always include a "this dude here said that" statements, everywhere?
I, hereby renounce any rights on stuff I'd said, or will say, on this forum. Anyone wanting to repeat what I had said can do so freely, and without stating that I was the source. Also, no quotes needed.

[How-To]Remove Ads v.RootRequired

EDIT: We have NAND WRITE ACCESS NOW, NO NEED TO USE THIS ANYMORE! Do the NAND ROOT then Install AdFree from the Market!!!
Sadly we don't have access to write to the NAND on the Evo outside of the recovery console(yet). Some apps such as "AdFree" By BigTinCan do not work for us, as it doesn't have permission for this...
So we must do this manually...
Choose a hosts file!
You need to do is decide where to get your hosts file that will block them. I am attaching the one I am using, but you can find more all over the net
My hosts file (Which is both other options combined)
Another Option
Another option
Once you have one, put it into the tools Android Tools Directory (C:\AndroidSDK\tools for most people).
Copy the Hosts file to the device!
1. ) The phone must be rooted. (Thanks Toast)
2. ) Boot the phone into recovery (Where it says: RECOVERY INSTRUCTIONS).
3. ) Start up ADB Shell
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb shell
4. ) Mount the System Partition
Code:
# mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
5. ) Exit Adb Shell (Press Control+C)
6. ) Push the hosts.txt file to the device.
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb push hosts.txt /system/etc/hosts
7. ) Reboot Device
Code:
C:\AndroidSDK\tools>adb reboot
That's it, not hard at all. Sadly as time goes on, more ads will slip through the cracks, and you have to do this again.
Quick Q&A:
Q: How do I root the phone?
A: Read this thread.
Q: How do I boot into the recovery console?
A: Read this thread.
Q: How do I set up/what is ADB?
A: Read this thread.
Q: Is removing ads wrong?
A: Probably.
Q: What benefits do I get from removing ads?
A: Less distractions, faster load times, more of the actual app/game will be shown.
Q: I still have a question! How do I...?
A: Answer

my point being that
a) i've already posted this up. if tenny had searched, he would have found my thread and would have seen that his was not needed
b) i didn't post it in development, which is designed for kernels, ROMs, radios, etc
honestly, the evo forum is, hands down, the least organized forum that i've seen here at xda. so many people ran out and bought the evo and now come here, just post up without searching, ask the same questions over and over, etc. we end up with 75 threads all saying the same thing. it's ridiculous.

Well depends on what you consider development, some consider any writing to the system partition to be some form of development...
Still though I apologize for posting this after you, I did search but when I originally made this, just I got distracted and didn't submit the thread until later. Don't worry I never saw your thread and did all the research on my own.
But complaining about this thread in the wrong section TWICE does no good... the mods are moving threads and haven't moved this yet... honestly who cares quit *****ing and let's move on.

I do not think so. You need to boot into recovery for anything to stick, so if you can't then no.
hmmm...strange that when I push this hosts.txt file over to /system/etc/hosts, my entire device just hung. I have to revert back to original hosts file.
Any ideas?
I noticed it removed the ads from Jewels but it didn't remove them from chompSMS. Since I use text more than play games, I'd appreciate it if someone figures out how to remove the ads from chompSMS to let me know. O btw, I used the original hosts.txt file the OP uses.
i don't know about chompsms, but if you grab the hosts file from my thread, in q and a, it eliminated the ads from handcent (and everything else i run). the hosts file i posted was updated from adfree 3 days ago.
@vboy, do the push while in recovery mode and with /system mounted for write permissions. there shouldn't be any 'hang' because it's not done while the phone is in android.
Sorry I wanted to edit my post and let you know it works with chomp but as a new user I couldn't. The frame is there, but no more ad! Thanks

I'm pushing it in recovery mode and pushed over to evo as /system/etc/hosts. I think it caused some issue with my phone in routing for hosts. Whenever I start using apps with data, then it's start hanging. I removed and revert back to hosts file and all is good.

[INFO] The developer FAQ thread (all you need to know about things like ABD and REWT)

Here is a list of Frequently Asked Questions for all you people coming here with questions like OMG HAO DO AI REWT MI TAB or MI ABD NUT WERKAN PLZ HALP, and the ever popular CN I RUT 0423 WIT DIS?
Lucky I have compiled the most popular questions and listed them here, with full explenation and solution.
Enjoy!
1. HAO DO I REWT MI TAB? I DUNNO WHER 2 FIND DIS THENKS.
Rooting your Transformer can indeed be done with the link here, however you will need some stuff beforehand like adb to get your Transformer rooted and ready to use that method. So for you guys who do not feel comfortable with that, do this.
2. WUT IS ABD PLZ HALP I DUNNO HOW 2 USE OMG SO CONFUZD
To get adb up and running, you simply have to follow the guide here. Oh, and you need the Asus PC Sync software from here. Simply select your PC operating system, download and install the Asus PC sync software.
Alternatively you can use the guide made by a kind xda member (screenshots included) here.
3. CN I R00T MY 0423 BUILD I WANN HAS ROMS?
Yes, indeed you can with the guides linked above.
4. OMG I HAS US/TW/UK/MOON TF101 CN I FLASH WW ROMS?!
After rooting and installing CWM you can flash any ROM you like, the regions only matter for stock updates at this time. So go ahead and flash any ROM you like.
5. WUT IS CIFS.KO && TUN.KO?!
If you don't know what it is, don't worry about it, it means you probably don't need it. But in the offchance you do need tun.ko for VPN, here is a link to installing openVPN.
6. I ROOTD AND MI CAMERA ++ BT NO WERKAN, WAT I DO?
Simply flash the BLOB_V5 file available in the root guide, use the same steps you used to flash (so not all the steps) BLOB_V4, just replace the CWM_BLOB_V4 parts with CWM_BLOB_V5 and that should fix your issues.
7. OMG MI SD CARD NO WERK FOR FLASHAN ROMS WHAT DO?!
Try and use fix permissions from CWM, or try a couple of times. Another fix for the sd card issue you can try, is to put the non working sd card into an android phone then go to storage on the phone and erase the sd card. reinserting that card into the transformer will then allow it to mount to CWM.
if it still doesn't work your card is probably hated by CWM (some are, for what reason we don't know) and you'll need to use a different SD card.
8. HAO 2 OVERCLOCK, MOAR CLOCK
You can overclock if you have root and CWM already. Simply go here and flash this kernel through CWM.
9. CN I FLASH BLOBZ THRU CWM
There is currently 1 way to flash the blob through a zip update if you are not on the 0325 build. This is by flashing the latest Modaco ROM which has the BLOB included.
10. CN I UNREWT MI TAB? I HAS NO WORRANTIES ANYMOAR
Yes. Simply flash the blob from the Asus website using the same steps you used to flash the CWM blob. here is also a guide.
11. I UPDAETED TO 3.1 NOW REWT NO WERK, WAT DO?
Download the 8.2.2.9 update from Asus and copy it to your internal memory to downgrade or do this.
12. MI TAB IS A BRIK, IT NO DO ANYTHING OMG HALP D: <- sadface
You can use this method to try and unbrick it, if that doesn't work, you're pretty much screwed.
13. WAT MI BATTERI IS DRAINING WTF SHUD I DO?
Well you see we made a shocking discovery today, electronics use electricity while turned on! I know! We were just as surprised as you are!
OMG CANNOT FIND MI INFO WTF IS FORUM SERCH?
For all of you slightly special people out there, here is a list of other threads that might help you find what you need. These have been cherrypicked by moi, feel free to post important additions.

seshmaru, a fix for the sd card issue, #7 is to put the non working sd card into an android phone then go to storage on the phone and erase the sd card. reinserting that card into the transformer will then allow it to mount to CWM.
just thought you could add that into your list. its been verified by myself and then a couple others tried it also.

I have to agree with some of the previous posters, that this is not easy to read, and the humour is old and nothing special (and repetitive for that matter - one witty question in that style would have gotten the same 'humorous' point across while still keeping the FAQ useful). This way people will probably hardly use it, and certainly not refer to it. That's a shame...

Lol, I think its fine. It's only the headings, not like he/she typed up the actual useful information that way, its still very readable and VERY useful for anyone needing the info.
Sorry, I have to state I find the post annoying as hell. It take four times as long to attempt to read and looks worse than my 7yr old's text messages. But, for any who are so desperate for help that they make it through child speak...
Hopefully, it helps them out.
It's only the headers that are slightly more difficult to read, the actual content is written in perfectly comprehensible english. Besides by having to decipher it, atleast they'd be doing SOMETHING for the info instead of gettng it simply handed to them.

Hey, thank you very much for that code. Of course, you absolutely screwed PirateGhost... I'm sure he has a Titanium Backup.
That code is very useful and I will start recommending that people use it when appropriate.
I use it every time I do a "master cleaning" of my phone before flashing a new set of ROMs. But seriously, the OP was very stupid to post a code like that without a serious warning. Could really wreck someone's day. Especially someone who doesn't already know what that code does.
My "cleaning" process is as follows:
- Delete "/efs" from current ROM (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP!)
- Remove SIM and SD Card
- Flash to stock with One-Click ODIN
- Do a "Master Clear" with the aforementioned code
- Flash stock Gingerbread w/ ODIN
- Flash desired kernel
- Wipe "data", "cache", "datadata", and "system"
- Flash desired ROM w/ CWM
- Restore fresh "nv_data.bin" file to "/efs" and let phone rebuild hashes/checksum
- Insert SIM and SD Card
I don't do that every time of course, as it takes a good while... but whenever I'm having random problems that cannot be fixed otherwise, this always clears me right up!
Note: In between deleting the /efs partition and restoring it at the end, the phone will NOT have a valid IMEI. This is why I suggest not re-inserting the SIM until after you restore the nv_data. Otherwise your provider *might* get confused by your phone appearing with an invalid IMEI paired with a valid ICCID. It will probably still work (least it does for me with AT&T), but I make no guarantees. Also, technically that might constitute "changing" your IMEI, which can get you in a boat-load of trouble.

Why? What would you like a replacement firmware to do? Remove bloat? Do that with titanium backup (or anything else that can 'freeze' pre-installed crud.) Change the launcher? You can already do that (but it seems most of the replacement launchers are designed more for phones.)
What do you want different that you can't already change?

I gotta say I agree with Gary. Now that we have root and CWM (thanks to Gary) there's not much more I feel compelled to change I can already with root. Perhaps a custom kernel we can OC but this danged this flies now. Perhaps someone can come up with something that'll amaze us all (and that would be very cool!) and I'll be all over it. Right now with ICS looming it might be a better allocation of dev resources to just lay back and wait/see what that brings?
Now custom themes.....THAT would right now peek my interest. Learned a few things from hatman41 on the TF. This might be an excuse to dig back in.
Just an opinion.

I'd like to see that as well, but it'd probably be a kernel change, not what people here call a ROM change. Let's see, here's how it's currently mounted:
Code:
/dev/block/vold/179:17 /mnt/sdcard/extStorages/SdCard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1023,fmask=0002,dmask=0002,allow_utime=0020,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 0
It's already mounted as read-write. The thing that's preventing normal user write access is the uid/gid combo with the fmask/dmask (not sure why samsung didn't just use a umask instead of both of the other masks.) Essentially, what that is doing is say that all the files and directories (including the root of the mount) are readable by anyone, but only writable to the "system" user, or a user in the "media_rw" group. I'm going to take a wild guess that the "camera" application, the "my files" application, and other samsung apps are in that "media_rw" group. (not sure how to check that...)
Interesting... I'm trying to remount it manually (mount -o remount,...) and while it's not giving any error, it's not working either.
I'm not sure how these "vold" mounts work, what options are valid for them, etc. It's an interesting issue, though...
All I want is a deodexed rom. Might have to break out android for dummies and learn how to.
Once we get that then let the theming begin.

Are you fluent with a shell prompt? If so, in order to attempt a CWM recovery (based on what I've already done for the p6210 and t869), please run the following two commands as root via adb shell... (and copy the resulting information)
mount
cat /proc/partitions
.. that will give me a hint as to which partition is probably your recovery partition. Send me that info IN A PM. I'll respond via PM with some more commands (based on the info you send me, I'll need you to dump a partition or two and get the images to me.)
Once I have the proper information and images, I can PROBABLY make a successful CWM recovery image (but please understand that I'll have to recompile a kernel BLIND with no possible way to test myself.)
Take care

I should also mention that I'm going to be VERY busy over the next 3 days, so even if I get the images and all works okay, the earliest I'd be able to have a recovery would be Thursday or so.

[ROOT]Samsung SM-J120A Galaxy Express 3 / Galaxy J1 2016

Below you will find instructions how to root this device.
The following procedure has been tested up to firmware J120AUCU2APJ2
KNOX should remain 0x0
However you undertake this at your own risk.
Issues:
Wifi passwords not remembered (fix below)
Stock Flashlight app not working.
Model number may be missing from build.prop (fix below)
Instructions
1. Flash the eng boot image.
This is a special boot image normally used by engineers, it allows selinux to be booted in permissive mode with relaxed root restrictions.
Do not replace this image with the stock image after rooting your device or you will possibly soft brick your device.
(See below for how to recover)
ENG_BOOT_J120A_PG1
Download Odin v3.11.1
Reboot Phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons)
Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
Download the ENG_BOOT_J120A_PG1.tar to your PC and add it to AP / PDA in ODIN.
Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
Click the start button, sit back and wait few minutes
2. Install and run Kingroot:
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/kingro...-release/kingroot-5-0-5-android-apk-download/
You may need to run Kingroot several times to gain successful root.
3. Install and run SuperSU me to remove Kingroot and convert to SuperSU (not required) :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ore&pcampaignid=APPU_1_uzPDVbGyFcGNyATHrqmoCA
Alternative (free) method to replace Kingroot:
Follow Steps 3 to 12.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...ide-how-to-root-tripping-knox-kitkat-t3129484
Don't flash the boot partition with Flashfire, uncheck.
You will also need to flash the system version of SuperSU not EverRoot.
When you get to step 12, don't flash the firmware. Disable EverRoot and just flash this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/v2-64-2-66-supersu-mode-t3286120
4. Wifi fix:
modify the line below in /system/build.prop:
ro.securestorage.support=true to false
5. To fix “Unauthorized actions have been detected”
disable 'security log agent'
6. Model number missing fix:
http://www.techgainer.com/change-fake-android-device-model-number-and-brand-name/
Enjoy your rooted device
To recover from a soft brick flash the firmware below.

FEEDBACK IS APPRECIATED PLEASE.

As ashyx mentioned in a previous post, Flashfire works. Loaded Xposed for Samsung via the Wa?? version.
spicybeansandricey, to clarify, Wanam is a modified version of Xposed for Samsung phones. Google is my friend, Google is your friend and Google is our friend. If you Googled it, you will find links to the same/similar packages linked by ashyx to get Xposed on Samsung phones. Since I was skimming the articles and successfully installed on a 4" screen, I wasn't sure about the name but only remembered the first 2 letters. In fact, the tutorial I followed was different from ashyx's post and gave no credit to XDA.
As an addendum, Flashfire works great and was able to back up EFS files. I just chose to backup EVERYTHING since I don't know what I will need later. My 128GB sd card cost more than the phone! LOL As for my vacation reading list and Google, I still have to read up on new superuser and root that can survive OTAs and root detection.

Yeh flash fire is pretty much the next best thing to custom recovery with a few little tricks of its own.
Anyone have a list of garbage that can be safely removed? Even after stripping some of the obvious stuff there's over 4Gb of system stuff.
Can I remove the Samsung stuff like Galaxy Apps and such? I don't want to remove anything that will make it unstable so that I can still reset it back to fresh and begin over, but without the bloat ware of that makes sense?

No matter how much you remove from system the size will never change, it's rather a pointless exercise. All you're doing is creating unused space.

SO i tried to flash xposed via flashfire and got the old "system software not authorized by at&t has been found on your phone..." brick.
How to get xposed on there without bricking?

So what's the point of rooting? The primary reason was to remove the bloat and recover some usable space on the device. Out of 8GB there's less than 3gb of usable storage on it rendering it mostly useless for anything but a media player or emulator box loading crap off the SDCard.
What a waste.

Rooting is about more than debloating. It's about having control over your device.
Why don't you use adoptable storage if you need more space?
You can always move user apps to system to take up the space you've created. There are plenty of apps that can do this such as system app remover. That way not only do you utilise that space but you also free up storage space.

How do you class a message, which is easily removed, as a brick?

Adoptable storage is useless. Most of the apps will not see it and refuse to install data there, making it impossible to install anything large on the device or more than a few small apps/games.
I hadn't considered moving installed apps to system space I will give system app removed a glance. Thx

Yes there is, but due to your attitude sort yourself out. I honestly don't know why I bother sometimes with this forum.

thats kind of harsh considering i just asked for instructions on how to get xposed on my phone. instead of helping you wanted to put me down for not using the word "brick" in a manner thats acceptable to you.
im sorry that we dont agree on semantics. i really have no "attitude" and how one can attribute an attitude to text on a website is debatable at best.
I have no ill-will, malice, or attitude, i had a general question that i was asking about and was looking to someone who looked like they had the answer for it. Normally, i "sort" these things out myself, but i went against my better judgement and asked here...(hence my 2 reply post history.)
if you can help me, i would gladly reward you for your time, via bitcoin, etc; I honestly have no issue other than i dont have the time to sit and look into this stuff like i use to 4-5 years ago. I promise you, i have no sort of attitude. this is just a forum FFS, and above all else, im not an 'ingrate.' i am always appreciative for any help that i receive.
If you could find the will to help me i would greatly appreciate it, otherwise lets not part ways with any ill-will, that's the last thing that i would ever want to happen.
thanks again for your time.
Ok so here's what my experience with system app remover was, and I hope I wasn't sounding rude or unappreciative, Immsimply trying to work towards a certain endpoint solution if possible.
System app remover did not permit me to relocate user apps into system space, in fact it won't let me move any apps as it claims "sdcard share the same disk with os", both in "move to phone" and in "move to sdcard" options.
Is there any reliable way to install apps directly to the external SDCard? Maybe install them to internal storage and then manually move them and symlink them? That wouldn't work for large apps but might allow installation of more smaller apps?
Essentially what you've stated means even the system is on its own "partition" right? So as I remove stuff that's stored in the /system folder, it's freeing space but not space my Android can access for the purpose of installation ?
Is that a proper summary of my situation?
Thanks in advance

OK, let's start again. Maybe I mistook your response, it just seemed a little snipey. To get help in the right direction, proper details of what the actual issue is goes a long way to obtaining the solution. Stating a message caused a brick isn't anything I've ever come across before which is why I asked the question? However it seems further to that post you actually meant Xposed caused the brick after you saw that message and rebooted.
So going back to what I previously stated about correct details, here we are 3 unnecessary posts later.
Moving on...to install Xposed you need to ensure you use the wanam build of Xposed.

Whoops, my bad. That's was the wrong app to suggest. I actually meant this one that DOES move user apps to system. You can see the mistake with the similar names!

By the way I suggest this busybox:

Thanks for the quick response.
I installed /system/app/remover and it seemed to offer a solution. However upon moving few apps to system with the app, it's merely removing them. So more tweaking needed.
Will keep update on progress.
Thanks again

Is it safe to remove all of the Samsung stuff? Will that break the reset ability?
