Root = Impossible - Verizon HTC One (M8)

There seems to be no possible way to root a Verizon HTC device now. I'm trying to root my M8 and every avenue I've tried, it's apparently impossible.
Sunshine didn't work.
Everyone says weak sauce no longer works.
HTCdev site didn't work.
I always run into the fact that I can't S-Off.
So... Is there now no possible way to root a Verizon HTC M8?
The main reason I want to root is for battery life. I'm desperate. I want the old battery saver feature back, that Verizon removed in the Marshmallow update. Losers. Why you eliminate such a helpful tool from a phone escapes me. Utter nonsense.
So, now I'm faced with the decision. Root my M8, or buy a new phone. Thing is, I'm not ready to upgrade. But I can't seem to find a way to root!
If anyone can offer ANY help here, I would be greatly, greatly, appreciative. My M8's battery is not what it used to be.

Are you trying to s-off or root? Root doesn't require s-off
If you are trying to get back to lollipop (since you don't seem happy with MM), s-off is required.
Sunshine worked fine for me, what error are you getting?
For Verizon M8, sunshine is your only real option unless you find someone in your area with a javacard. Htcdev and weaksauce won't work.

Well, I first tried the dev site. Went through all the steps and then it said I had to do the whole s-off procedure, but I wasn't able to because Verizon doesn't allow it anymore supposedly.
So then I tried Sunshine. It essentially ran the temp boot, my phone reboots, and then... Nothing. Nothing happens. I go back to sunshine and it just restarts all the tests again and asks for a temp root. Going in circles basically...
I'm lost. But there's got to be a way...
I'd rather not have to go back to 5.1, because I like have Sense 7 with MM. But if I can't root and am faced with no other option, I will entertain the idea. At the end of the day, my battery life is more important to me than themes or just about anything else.

You can send it off to someone with a Java Card like us VZW M9 members have done/are doing.
Here is the thread, the OP shows a map where the ppl are located, you may get lucky and be able to meet someone.

That is really my last option.
I suppose this confirms it then: there really is no way to root a Verizon M8. Least ways, not without some special 'card'.

I just confirmed that there is..
Up until about a month ago Sunshine worked.
MM just came out, you never want to take an OTA if you aren't rooted and don't know if the new OTA is rootable.
My suggestion is to just send it out.
I did it with my M9.
It's 100% worth it, you will be rooted and S-OFF with bootloader unlocked all the goodies, all the guys are great, usually get it done and sent back out the same day. You pay for shipping to and from and they can't charge so you toss them a "donation".

Just got the phone rooted! Unlocked with sunshine and then got a friend to root for me.
Do you know if there is a way to enable power saver mode? Verizon disabled it, and I really want it back. Anyway to re-enable after root?

Flash a rom that supports it or find the Android shell command that enables it. I have seen it posted a couple times. The only direct way I know of requires a wipe.

I just purchased my HOX yesterday and yes they now come with the 1.85 software preinstalled. So there is a great chance that your replacement will have the latest software or if you allow them to power it on they will immediate accept the update before they even hand you the phone. Maybe you can switch your own sim and tell them you want to set it up yourself and it may not have the update yet.
The same thing happened with the Evo when it first came out though. I had light leak and random resets and got a replacement that had the new Gingerbread update and no root method. Within a week they had found a way to downgrade to Froyo to attain root again so don't sweat it too much. Go get a good device!

I think the problem for us with replacements is that all the developers who are working on this phone already have theirs rooted and unlocked. There's no incentive or reason to find a way to root 1.85. I read somewhere that there is another update coming too.

I'm still on 1.73 also but very confused to what I need to do to update,
first: unlock bootloader from htcdev?
second: root?
three: change CID with superCID?
four: relock with adb command
five: run the 1.85 update?
six: unlock bootloader again?
seven: root
eight: install CWM?
yes/no/maybe so?

These are the steps for the AT&T 1.73.
1) Root
2) Install RootKeeper (not needed...but 'eh can't hurt)
3) SuperCID
4) Titanium Backup - Optional if you want to save apps and app data
5) Upgrade to 1.85 via RUU - this will wipe everything except sd card
6) Unlock bootloader via HTCDev.com
7) Install Recovery
8) Root via Recovery
Can we please get peters guide stickied?

I'm on 1.82 and I'm rooted, with SuperCID but I haven't unlocked yet because I'm hoping that we'll get S-OFF and I won't have to notify HTC of my "modding" activities. So, as long as I have SuperCID, I'll have the option of unlocking the downloader after the OTA upgrade, right? Assuming Rootkeeper failed or whatever...
Thanks!

I agree. Peter's guide is excellent. I did everything using Peter's guide following the Manual methods for everything (rather than One-Click methods). You learn more this way, less chance for errors. One-Click requires everthing to be perfect before running, and if things don't work you have no clue why nor how to troubleshoot.

[Q] Newb questions!

I'm getting m8 next week and I'm coming from m7
but I haven't rooted since I owned dna so it has been over 6 months.
So I need to re-learn the process of rooting and s-off.
My questions are
1. Since I have no idea what the software number would be, do we have a root method and s-off method for the latest ota?
2. Is there cm11 rom available? I can't find one in the development section.
Good choice. Now for question 1 I would look into a program called SunShine I believe that should work for you just make sure that you have all your drivers installed. As for question 2 go to Cyanogenmod look in downloads for M8 they are nighty's. You will have to get your gapps too. But DON'T forget to make a backup of your stock rom.

Is this a nope no thanks not wanting to pay for soff? Only reason I ask is because there are people with newer firmware that are able to still use the free method called firewater. From what I gather reason for firewater working for some and not others is due to variances in specific hardware used from one production of this device to another. I liken this to say an HP computer you model number could match mine but if production for my desktop included a generic component because HP found a way to save 5$ with each unit in my batch but you got a different componant with yours there is a slight variance in the hardware. I have worked in or around the computer industry since I was 12 and honestly never thought about this but it makes sense that if a specific instruction calls for a specific rresponse one responds differently thennwhat is expected the process would have to stop. This is a great device and worth the $$ if firewater is unable to be used IMHO.

[Q] Recently Locked Bootloader, S-ON & Unrooted TAMPERED FLAG

So, I needed to return my phone back to stock recently (yes, HTC ONE M8 VERIZON).
Followed the directions posted here and all went perfect. Did have to purchase the "Universal Unroot" app to get SuperSU to uninstall.
About 20 minutes later, I get a notification stating there was an update from Verizon for OTA. I follow the onscreen prompts (figured, what does it matter, phone is stock again) after the install, I get a prompt stating the phone has been tampered (or something to that affect), so I load the bootloader and I see the *** TAMPERED *** flag on the top.
Is there anyway to get that removed now that I am no longer rooted, on S-OFF and my bootloader is locked again... Before turning the phone back in to Verizon?
Did you take a nandroid backup after rooting? If so just flash that. As for the ota, they are more trouble than they are worth most of the time. You can just grab the radio and firmware from it, posted in the development area, then flash nusense6 custom Rom to get 4.4.3. It's mostly stock.

thanks for the tip, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel, tomorrow I may be all good.
I can tell you 100% for sure that Sunshine does work with stock Verizon 4.4.3. They updated their thread with that information. You'll probably have to pay the 25$ (if you haven't already paid it before) but it is seriously the easiest S-OFF exploit there is. You just install the apk, open it, you get a prompt for payment either paypal or credit card, then it runs compatibility tests and then S-OFFs. You literally have to do nothing but install the apk. You don't even need root to use it. It does it all itself. After you run Sunshine, fastboot flash the latest TWRP, then flash SuperSU zip for root. (you can get that here: http://download.chainfire.eu/420/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip ) and your are good to go. Resetting the tampered flag may be difficult though. I'm sure someone has done it somewhere though.

alright, so jcase just worked his magic on my phone...

i am now back to stock ROM, S-OFF, Unlocked bootloader, stock recovery & rooted
i followed the instructions here once jcase got me all sorted out with the above...
what i see becoming an issue is, I am on verizon software version 2.21.605.2...
all I want to do is get my phone to a state where I can return it to verizon from here...
I have read the 2 major write ups I have found on returning a phone to stock but, they are all for previous versions of verizon software...
anyone have any ideas/links to give a brother a hand?

Well they will work. You could use the RUU and return to 1.55.605.2. Doesn't matter what version you are on now, it will work. It will put you at almost 100% stock. Just re-lock the bootloader with a command and you can send it back.

Sunshine S-Off is the only option left on the M8 to my knowledge. Either you have the $25 or you don't. Depends on how badly you want S-OFF. It works perfectly on the current OTA (3.28.605.4)
Out of curiosity, why is there not the option to flash an old ruu via tricking the system into thinking it's running an older version...? I've seen such a thread for the M7 it is there no older firmware that was fully root/s-off'able? Anyone seen something like this..?

No. Won't work. Hboot will give you an error if you try to load any firmware or ruu that have a version number that starts out with a number smaller than the previous.

I understood it completely. The guide you refer to is for boot loader unlockable phones for 1) and 2) their downgrade stayed in the same 3.x.x.x firmware realm.
If you had 3.28.605.1 you might be able to downgrade on the current 3.28.605.4. Get what I'm saying? Not like I wouldn't have tried this myself on the many phones I support because I really don't know what ruu's are. ??
FWIW They are currently working on sunshine 3.0 and that should work for the current 4.4.4 I guess it was a hit and miss deal with firewater depending on what chipset your phone had. It worked on some but not on others... I am patiently waiting for 3.0 to drop!
Let's all take a moment to realize how ****ing awful Verizon is for not allowing us to use HTCDEV to unlock our phones. I bought it. With my money. It's my device. I should be able to do with it what I please. **** them. If I had the money or time I would sue them for as much as I can.

Ah... My bad. Sorry for doubting you there.... Your points are (unfortunately) both true and well articulated. Thanks for clearing that up. And yes, I will join in the moment of silence and silent raging at the horrible tyranny that is BIG RED... D*** them and their reliable coverage... (Although where I live their LTE speeds are horrible, beaten only by sprint in terms of lousiness... Although, in some areas sprint actually has LTE which is faster than Verizon's... Go figure)

I am currently on 3.28.605.4 and sunshine does NOT work yet, it is a known issue. And lie I said it is a hit and miss deal per phone. Sunshine will perform a series of tests and let you know if it will work or not before asking you to commit to the 25 bones. C,mon 3.0!!!

Newbie Updating from 4.4.2 to 5.0.1 , but need advice first

Hi Guys,
I've been doing searches on here all night and I'm more confused than ever.
I just got a like new m8 that's still on 4.4.2.
I just rooted it with weaksauce. I would like to update to 5.0.1 and be able to root. I'm not sure if I need for s-off or unlocked bootloader, but I think I read some of these should be done before updating to lollipop.
I was planning to update with the ruu update from HTC website.
I think I read that I can't do the ruu update if I'm unlocked or s-off, but I can't unlock or s-off after updating to 5.0.1
Can someone who knows what's up with this clarify things for me? I don't want to update without being sure I have everything set right in advance.

Get s-off first. You can do any of the ruu I have posted while s-off. HTC also doesn't post Verizon ruu on their website. Now hit therootninja.com before its too late.

Cool, thanks for the info.
Wow, I just went to get the s-off software, 25.00 That's the most expensive phone software I've seen. I don't mind paying for software, but is there any other option that is less expensive? I just got my girlfriend an m8 too and doing this twice is going to be a big investment.

Zero other options. If you want root on your phone it's your only option.

Maybe I'll just stick with kit Kat for now since it's easy to root with weak sauce. Any way to stop an ota update? I haven't got one yet.

I would S-OFF on KK then take the OTA to 5.0.1
That sounds like good advice and what I would do if it wasn't going to cost 50 to s-off our two phones. Our budget is tight after just buying phones at 150 bucks each. So until there is a less expensive s-off method I think were stuck with rooted Kit Kat. We just need root for basic stuff like titanium backup and to turn on tethering (which I hope I can do on this phone).

You do realize that without s-off your root will be pretty worthless for most things thanks to write protection in place right?

I was not aware of that. Will I not be able to use titanium backup to restore my apps and data? How about unlocking tethering?

I'll add to the choir here. Do yourself a favor and get s-off before doing anything. Weaksauce works but the changes only last until you reboot. With s-off, you can do anything. And yes, Titanium Backup will restore your apps and data. As for the tethering, you can flash a rom that has it enabled or you can just run stock and "unlock" it yourself. It's a simple edit of a file. It's well worth the $25 it costs. Do it if you can.

We are all new at some point in time and if there is anything I can suggest it is to listen to dottat. The kat knows his biz.
That $50 you "can't afford" . When you take one of those OTA updates unintentionally and then realize that not even $5000 can get you the s-off you so desperately desire for TB, tethering, or whatever your fancy is....it's pennies my good friend. You are so very lucky to be on KK, as that can still be dealt with. LP is another animal. To my knowledge there has been no way to get s-off/unlock bootloader. Take it form me, a flash junkie - you want s-off. You want an unlocked bootloader. You want root. Once you have it you never go back.
Otherwise you should have gotten an iphone.
These words are not to meant to condescend or talk down, it is to encourage you to take what you can while you still can.
I just found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/help/verizon-htc-one-m8-lollipop-root-t3072841/page5
So it looks like you can get root on lollipop now.
If I am rooted by this method and S-on can I use titanium backup for full backups and restoring apps? Also, can I turn on tethering with sqlite editor. Or will I still need S-off to do these two things?
I doubt I'll be changing roms or anything advanced, just need my Titanium Backup and tethering.
I also see that Sunshine now supports lollipop, so if I do decide I need it later, I guess I can always do it later.

I'm not sure how you got that out of the last sentence ....Did you read all of the post? :
"We do not currently Support the VERIZON HTC M9, nor Verizon m8 running 5.0.x (4.4.4 and below are good to go). We are working it, no ETAs, no HINTS, NO DETAILS, NO UPDATES!! Please don't ask about it"
Your phones are yours to do with as you choose of course, but if you want to take advantage of TB and tethering in the manner in which you hope to, you'll need s-off. As dottat has pointed out once again, and as I've already said, you've come this far and you are lucky enough to have found two phones with the 4.x firmware still on them, you'd be throwing all that away in the HOPES that one day you can get that exploit - and you'll STILL have to pay $25 for it IF they do.
I read that there was S-off support for lollipop at the top of this post in red lettering http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792487
Am I reading it wrong? It's confusing because below that it says "We do not currently Support the VERIZON HTC M9, nor Verizon m8 running 5.0.x (4.4.4 and below are good to go). We are working it, no ETAs, no HINTS, NO DETAILS, NO UPDATES!! Please don't ask about it"

The sunshine app itself does not officially support it. You must get root first via the kingroot...which is fairly unstable root. It takes a number of tries which for most people is tough.
You are really setting out on a tough path if you don't at least get yours s-off.
We have already given you enough justification at this point I believe you simply need to make a decision and go with it.

! What he said!
Both the M8 and M9 are unleashed after you have them S-0ffed. In addition to getting Wifi Tether,
you can modify things like Power Saver settings and other fun things. You can experiment with things
safely and obtain a faster phone that gets better battery life than bloated stock.
Devs post great custom roms that you can sample. Honestly, I like the 'new' look of my phone rotating
thru the different roms available here on xda.
Def worth the effort to S-0ff.
I got both phones S-off this week. I'm going to install dottat's prerooted 5.0.1 on them now. Crossing my fingers that I do it right.
Just want to thank everyone that posted for the great advice.
Me and my girlfriend can't wait to get on some modern phones, we're using droid 4 and droid razr that are grinding to a halt and barely function.
