Hi,
I decided to post my own topic and not in the CM11 thread, because this is probably not a CM11 issue. As you know, the Nexus S has only 512MB of RAM including video. Mine has been having quite a lot of slowdowns (apps refreshes/restarts) for the past weeks. I am wondering what I could do to help it and avoid buying a new phone (no money and I still love that phone).
However now, there are few things that I can't do anymore.
- I can't listen to BeyondPod (podcasts) and receive/send SMS in Hangout. There's not enough RAM to run both apps and even when I am listening to BeyondPod, the SMS alert might not trigger when a SMS is received. This happens in few apps here and there.
- Sometimes, someone calls me and the screen stays black so I can't answer. Again, this is due to RAM usage.
- I use SwiftKey as keyboard and it can't take 30-45 seconds to load in some apps such as Chrome.
I am running CM11 Nightlies. I usually update CM11 once per 2 weeks with the lastest Nightly available. I don't wipe the entire configs, I just upgrade. It's been a while since I've wiped everything to be honest. I probably updated CM10 to CM11 without wiping the configs. This might be one thing to try but I am not sure if it would help to regain some RAM/juice. I am running the stock kernel of CM11. I know there are few kernels with a bigmem patch, but does it really work ?
As for launcher, I am running Apex Launcher as well with SwipePad. Greenify runs in the background and hibernate pretty much every apps it can. I don't have the Greenify donation package, so it won't hibernate on the system apps.
I am wondering if wiping everything and installing a stable version of CM11 (or another lighter ROM?) would help. I would use TItanium Backup to reinstall the apps and their settings. I wouldn't use TiB to push the configs of the ROM if CM11 is reinstalled. Would a kernel or ROM with bigmem patch a good idea ?
This would probably be a temporary fix, because apps and ROMs are asking for more and more CPU/RAM these days.
Thanks for any input,
Neo.
A clean flash isn't a bad idea, just backup your rom first.. Backup your apps/ data on your SD with titanium backup and then you can just restore them.. You could try my stable v1.1 script and use Guru (CM kernel with bigmem) or Devil and you will notice the improvement.. Also the CM m9 is a very nice rom.. Happy flashing..

Before I receive your answer, I did some research on my side as well. It turns out that I have downloaded your ROM (the Farewell edition) and the cn.fyodor AOSP 4.4.3 ROM. I decided to go ahead and install the AOSP ROM instead of yours. I wanted to try AOSP instead of CM, being a CM user for the past 2-3 years. While I was satisfied with the AOSP ROM for the past day or 2, I am now unsure if I will keep it. While performances are good compared to what I was used to, I have some issues. The videos in YouTube are lagging like crazy (although videos in VLC work fine) and the audio stutter sometimes. I listen to a lot of music and each few minutes, it will stutter for a split second. I never had that issue with CM11. Also, I can't find a kernel with bigmem on AOSP. There is the marmite kernel from bedalus which seemed promising, but everyone is having FC with the Google Play Store and BLN/BLD isn't working anymore on this kernel.
How does your ROM compare with CM11 ? I know yours is CM based. Is there less "bloatwares" in yours ? CM install lots of stuff (themes, bugs reporting, etc) and I don't want that. I prefer to use the Xposed Framework instead of a ROM with multiple settings that I don't use. Having a CM based ROM would be nice to be able to flash the Guru kernel.

It basically is CM11, a little less bloated, but similar feature set.. Give it a try, you can always flash another rom if it doesn't suite you.. Slim 5.1 is another favorite of mine, if you'd like to try that one you'll need to search their thread as it wasn't a public release..

Your "Farewell edition" is Kitkat 4.4.4 or 4.4.2 ? So that I can download the appropriate Gapps. I also understand that the Gapps you provide in your thread are a minimal package, so my Nexus S doesn't run out of space (which happened to me few months ago due to the new official Gapps package).
Thanks

Use jira to report these issues as instructed in the OP.....
Also make sure you provide vital information to help troubleshoot these issues. Telling us that you have a bug doesn't really do much. Things like what kernel, version of the ROM, whether or not you're using Xposed and if you've done a clean or dirty flash is important
Thanks
This rom is awesome. Running great w/ Phantomr5

so i just flashed this yesterday love this rom but for some reason the keyboard is not working is anyone else having this problem just wondering
Quicksettings
Hello,
Is it in the new Version possible to change the quicksettings in the notifications drawer alone? Or are joined these quicksetting in the notification drawer with the quick settings?

I9300, DU and Bluetooth
Tried out the Dirty Unicorn ROM today, and was impressed. The only problem, Bluetooth.
My headset worked on the first attempt, but then that was that. In the car it wouldn't pair. It seems to be a general problem with the S3 and non-stock ROMs, and up till now I haven't found a solution.
With DU I got a connection, but no sound. Voice seems to work though. But as I said, the car didn't even pair.
Is there a solution to this problem, or do I have to live with no Bluetooth or only Samsung based ROMs?
Thanks in advance

Most likely due to flashing PA Gapps
Try wiping everything in recovery, flashing the ROM again and using a GAPPS package that doesn't remove the keyboard or it's libs

This most likely was due to your headset. Is hard to say tbh
Is like headphones, some last forever and some die out and start to sound like crap after a few months.....

The headset was bought in August and the car is about 2 weeks old. With Blekota ROM both work fine.
No the problem seems to lie in that Samsung don't like to do things in a standard way, and don't let on how they do it instead.
My question was more or less has anyone manged to reverse engineer the Bluetooth driver from Samsung and find a solution? There are many suggestions out there but up untill now I haven't found one that works.

absence of network
i had converted my xt1033 moto g to xt1032 for the purpose of flashing the dirty unicorn rom. but after i first booted it i didnt get any network and dialer app wasnt working properly either(crashing). i have read the entire thread from top to bottom and found some fellow moto g xt1033 users who had wireless working.. i wonder what i did wrong because i followed the flashing guide to the letter. network doesnt work in xt1033 either.
For XT1031 Users...
If you're like me and you have the Boost Mobile Moto G and are fond of using the an alternative kernel with your ROMsl, perhaps you've been through an issue where you suddenly cannot connect to the mobile data network. Here is your fix for that. With your file explorer (having Root access, of course.), go to your build.prop which is located in System.
At the very bottom of all of the text, just simply add this.
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=1
Save changes and then reboot. I can now use Decepticon Kernel with this ROM.
no signal in xt1033
after flashing this rom network not detecting in xt1033.
error : "sim card doesn't allow connection to this network"
Did anyone try to add DU to multirom but fail?
I already try it but, no luck, do i need wipe all data rom on multirom?
some governor's parameters can not be modified, in spite of them being active. why is this? (pegasusq, ondemandX, and some others)
Van you provide some info about the governors?
Anyone tried to use ART with this rom? because when i convert to this runtime i lose all my google account :silly:
I don t know what I miss. But I can t find how to add dashclock widget on lockscreen (DU 8.1).
If anyone can give me a clue ! Thanks and happy Halloween !
Edit : found it. Had to check "activate widgets" in security menu.

Hi experienced developers.
So, directly coming to the point... I have a hammerhead aka Nexus 5 16GB.
The phone works superb. No issue is reported till now. But one thing is eating my brain and I am damn frustated about it, is that the flashlight of the phone won't turn up or work on any firmware or stock rom. I tried every other rom, L Developer Preview, MIUI, Re flashed KTU84Q from Google's website and what not. I tried everything but the Flash won't work. Some apps in play store for Flashlights say error message that LED is not found. I have attached Screenshot of the same. So, in short no way could turn the flashlight except for one day when I tried Paranoid Android on my Nexus 5. I opened the app (fingers crossed) and kaboom.... FLASHLIGHT TURNED ON!!! I was hell surprised as to none of my attempts did turn on that light.. Not even Pure Stock Google firmware couldn't do so. But the default Flashlight app on PA do turn on the flashlight. I tried the Flashlight.apk file of PA on stock rom and it says "Unfortunately Stopped"
I am damn frustated and confused as to what shall I do. I can't use PA as my daily driver.
I need Stock Rom+Xposed with L Developer Preview on multi boot. Please help me developers.

Kernel isn't exactly stock, but close enough.
Paranoid Android's Flashlight app won't work on stock ROMs since it uses sysfs rather than camera functionality to turn on the flash.
Try taking the .apk out of a CyanogenMod 11 Nightly and see if that works.

Yeah... Sorry. I was first on stock kernel only. But then I installed MultiRom and flashed the custom kernel required by MultiRom. But guess what.... Flashlight won't turn on in either kernel. I tried Flashlight.apk from CyanogenMod 11 but no use.
Yeah.. I would like to tell you.... My camera doesn't work. The Camera app doesn't show on phone. I am able to open secondary camera from Lockscreen shortcut but the phone has no app for camera. I think it's camera is broken. If you can help... I'll be really really thankful to you.

Dude... I did everything. I even flashed Stock Factory Image from Google. Still no use.
Hello friends, thanks for taking the time for reading this.
I recently bought a Moto G3 second hand and had previously installed Lineage OS. And I have been having heating and fast battery drainage issues and i would like to know if reverting to stock can help me with that before sending it to repair.
I have three questions. How can I know that i have stock kernel? and if not, where can I find it so I can flash it?
And, if I flash the factory image, I can leave twrp untouched or i must flash custom recovery?
Thanks again.
Edit: Could it be that it has stock Gapps Package? Just trying to find the origin of the problem.

Install offitial lineage os with nano or pico gapps. Origin can be you are running extra apps if using larger gapps or some app may be causing issue which can be located in battery section which app using more batty or cpu in background

Hey, thanks for answering.
While I was waiting for an answer, I've tried: 1) clean install lineage with the smallest gapps package possible. 2) Trying Greenify and Coolify apps. 3) Installing a custom kernel and tweaking it with Audiutor. None of these have helped at all.
When is Idle the phone temperature range is between 35-39 C and with use is between 40-44 C. The battery last 10 hours or less if I dont use it at all, 6-8 hours depend on usage. The apps that get the most battery are Screen, Android os and play services.
My questions are: 1) Those temperatures/battery time are normal for this device or are they a common malfunction in hardware? (Maybe like S4 mini and Nexus 5x with emmc) 2) There's a chance that with the stock firmware I can get better battery time and less heat? (I've seen reviews that this model could get to the 2 days without charge, don't know if that's true).
I have had either a Nexus 5x and a Moto G1 and they never felt so hot when in use. I don't wanna send it to repair just yet because in my country there aren't official motorola stores and I don't want them opening the screen and ruining the water resistance unless that's the last resort.
Sorry for the wall of text. Thanks in advance.
Hey, I also face the same issues with some custom ROMs . iam using moto g3 2gb ram. I also flashed lineage OS 14. I also had the battery heating problem . but for others they have no issues. I almost flashed all nougat ROMs . I face this issue with some other ROMs too. I always do clean flash, with small gapps. I can't use some best ROMs out there as my daily driver because of this battery issue. Please help
Do you face the same issue with the stock ROM? Which ROMs have you tried? The heating is only in the battery or CPU as well? How much does your battery lasts?
I never tied stock . Iam using AICP ROM now it has no such problems. I had issues with aosp extended and dot os and some Oreo roms too. As u said I am also having 2 to 3 hours more battery drain
Should I try AICP? How much does it solve that problem? I think I've made a makeshift solution with kernel adiutor and lineage stock kernel disabling a core and under locking a bit the others and with a couple of powersaving governor's it doesn't heat as much and the performance it's not too unbearable, but the battery drain hasn't improved as much.
If anyone could shed some light on what could be happening I would be truly grateful.
Yes do try AICP, viperOS or RR works well for me and are stable .. I also tried custom kernel with lineageOS. But didn't solve battery draining . I don't understand why it happens to only some rom.

Ok, I've tried and I'm updating.
RR doesn't make my phone heat less and the battery keeps draining also AOSP 8.0. Seems like my problem isn't software related. I've yet to try the stock ROM so I can know for sure.
Thanks for the suggestion mate.
Bro then there might me some other issues that is not related with custom ROMs . Do check flashing stock ROM with out root, and I hope someone more experienced might help you
hey, i've been using this rom months ago, and it rebooted today while i was using facebook and yesterday while opening a big pdf, anyone got this problem ? should i go for GENISYS XPERIENCE ROM since hyperion development is dead ?
You could try clearing cache and see what happens. How big was the pdf?
The Hyperion rom was THE Nòugat break through for our J7's, abandoned by Uncle Sammy.
Thanks to @Allooosh98.
It was to serve as a stock like Nougat rom. Ported from the A3. Development is not dead.
The rest of the Nougat roms are based on it or it's kernel.

thank you for reply, i just cleared cache i will keep an eye on phone to see what will happen.
i got another problem i don't know if it's real but isn't the battery draining so much ? if i compare my phone now with my phone with stock rom i can say my battery is draining much more than before. when my battery reaches like 15-5% it will auto reboot (usually happens!) and i remember that alooosh mentioned that there is more battery draining
i am using v2 of hyperion .. i got what you mean that hyperion is the origin but isn't there a new rom based on it but more stable with less bugs like the one i mentioned in my thread ?
p.s. (there is another bug in camera it fc when i go to effects) but it doesn't matter what i want to make sure about is the battery
There is a full buffet menu of Nougat roms now, thanks to our Devs.
I've been using Revolution OS for over 2 months now. There's more - Experience OS, Ex OS, Genisys, On8 port, Note 8 port etc.
Many include the camera bug fix. Try them out ?.
Your battery problem has been experienced by some others on here - do a search. Some bought new batteries, others tried recalibrating the battery. Good luck!
