Chrome and Other Google Apps 'Hanging' by a Thread - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA, I hope you thought that my title was punny enough to earn your attention.
My Galaxy S6 has recently and suddenly refused to cooperate with Chrome, Google Music, etc.
I am experiencing hanging on Chrome; I.E. (pun intended) the loading bar will get 1/10th of the way to finish,
wait about 30-60 seconds, then continue loading. (This occurs on both Wi-Fi and mobile data)
Google Music simply will not load online music while on Wi-Fi.
Even the stock "Internet" app hangs similar to chrome.
The Google Play Store also refuses my Wi-Fi connection; merely leaving the screen blank and not loading features
I cannot even update or download apps.
What I have tried:
Resetting the Google Apps and Play Store Cache
Uninstalling Google Apps' updates
I will be updating this list as help comes in the streamline the efforts to restore my phone to glory.
Please save me from this Sprint "LTE" and Spark torture.
Thank you all !

I am on Verizon and recently experienced the same issue with Chrome. I switched to the Samsung browser and it works fine. Hoping a,Chrome update fixes the isdue.

Android 4.4: Reverting to google talk from hangout

Any way to revert to the google talk app from google hangout in 4.4?
there are some methods works in android 4.3, but it can't work in 4.4..
I tried to manually install the gtalk apk, but it won't install.
I have installed google talk into android 4.4, but it can't login
I have installed google talk into android 4.4, but it can't login. it seems that the google talk can't access to the network.
Anyone else have any success with this? I don't have the patience to downgrade to hangouts...

probably cant connect to the network because its old and not supported anymore. I would say install on 4.3 rom, but thats not possible for the n5. so unfortunately, your stuck with hangouts
Anyway to install the original mms.apk?

I really hate the hangouts integration with SMS is so annoying, and hangouts is really dull anyway, the BBM app seems far better for chatting on, anyone agree?

Get the mms.apk from the N4 (4.3). On the N5 (rooted), rename mms.apk to mms.apk.bak (Root Explorer recommended), copy mms.apk from N4 over, set permissions and reboot.

Google has moved on. It's time to accept the inevitable. You're stuck with Hangouts.

same problem here
any solution pllz
i think the problem it is with the Google Play Service and Google Play because i downgraded from 4.4 to 4.3 install the gapps, Talk worked... but after a while after thos two has updatedand after that i cant login... went to Settings--> Apps and uninstal the update of this two and... let the factory ones.. and it worked!
but after some hours.. they update themelf and Talk stop loging again
I think i have a solution.. but i cant test it because i am not on 4.4 anymore... so here ar the steps:
1. copy the Google Play Service and Google Play from 4.2 ( or 4.3 ...anyway a older version) gapps and use a your favorite root Explorer to put them into System-->App and set the Permision..
2 go to Data-->app and delete the update from this two...
3 Restart.. and see what happen.. GTalk its working?
Important... make sure that in Settings --> Apps you dont see any Google Service or Google play so that the one who ar actives ar the older version!
can someone test this?

Ok, so I don't think this is quite the right attitude here. Android is (was?) all about customizability, right? That's really it's big selling point over iOS, as far as I'm concerned. The Hangouts application removes several distinct functions that were available in gTalk:
1)From the main screen, where ongoing conversations are listed, you cannot tell if a contact is online
2)if you swipe into the screen to start a new conversation, you can see if a user is online, but not if they are away/idle
3)I cannot set my status to away, to be viewed as red by someone using talk on a desktop within gmail (or someone still able to use the original android Talk app), which the majority of my contacts are.
4)I cannot set my status to invisible, so that I am able to chat with one or two contacts without being interrupted by others
The fact that google has actually _removed_ this functionality makes it appear that they have no intention of adding it back in. Why have they removed these functions? What is the motivation? I have no idea. Talk was probably my most used app, so this is all incredibly frustrating.
There are third party apps (Jabber clients) that can enable functions 1-4 (such as Beejive, or Xabber) but as far as I can tell none of these apps have the capability of syncing conversations between multiple devices. For example, if I was typing to someone on talk from within gmail, and then I had to leave, but wanted to continue the conversation from my android device, talk (and Hangouts) show the entire conversation, including those messages sent from the desktop. I have not been able to find a Jabber client that has this ability.
It seems like the best bet here is modding GTalk so that we can continue to use it with android 4.4. Hopefully some kind Dev will come through and offer to help? I would love to buy that person a beer -- I know I'm not alone on this. I would be happy to pay for any app that could replace the functionality of Talk.

you're right, except when it's Google's own apps. since they control it (the app and servers), they can dictate what you can and can't do.
embrace change and figure out a way to make the current app work for you. or, continue beating your head against the wall, because nothing says sanity like trying to do the same thing over and over again with the same results.
Ok so I got GTalk to sign in on my Android 4.3.
Here are all the steps I did, and I have no idea which ones are really necessary:
1) Removed Hangouts.apk from system/app and data/app, and removed gms core from system/app
2) Flashed gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip entirely (without removing anything)
3) Uninstalled all updates of Google Play Store and Google Play Services, and disabled auto update on Google Play Store
4) Tried to sign in -> no success
5) Updated gtalks to hangouts using play store
6) Signed into Hangouts, then signed out
7) Uninstalled updates to hangouts, so it reverted back to GTalk
8) Tried to sign in on GTalk and it worked!
Hope it helps someone else!

So when I flashed Infamous ROM on my S4 did not choose "Hangouts" as part of the flashing. Once flashed stopped auto update in the play store. Still no hangouts installed. Then mounted sytems as rw with ADB and pushed Talk.apk to sytem.
Successfully logged in to Talk. Testing sending message to another Gtalk IID
Google is breaking my heart with terrible gapp updates... First maps, now talk...
I can't stand how ugly, buggy and unusable Hangouts is. It's 5 steps back 0 steps forward. What on earth are they thinking?!?
It's disappointing that Google is shoving this update down our throats and are taking measures to prevent the older, superior versions from working altogether. I would glady donate to someone if they found a way to mod Talk to a working state. I'm glad a side-load mod was found for Maps, but I fear Talk won't be as lucky.

you would be right if googles apps were open source, but they arent. Google can do whatever they want with the apps. But this is android, and you do have the option of using other apps. Its time to let go people.

[Q] How to downgrade to the old Google Photos?

The new Photos app does not auto-enhance photos, and I really liked that feature. I tried looking for an old Photos apk but this new one seems to be the first one. So I figured it was part of the Google+ package. I uninstalled Photos and cleared all updates from Google+, but still no old Photos app. Am I missing something?
I have a T-Mo Galaxy S6.
Ran into your problem yesterday, there are 2 ways:
restore your phone to factory lol or,
uninstall google+ (as photos.apk is part of it) and install an older version <5.6 so 5.5 will do the trick, and do not allow updates of your google+ or photos.apk
It looks like the option to uninstall updates from google + is no longer available, which is what I relied on in the past. Now with no root on a note 4 att model, I'm screwed and stuck with the new crappy photos app unless I restore. Ugh!
---------- Post added at 12:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:20 AM ----------
Ok I solved my own issue. Even without the option to uninstall or uninstall updates on Google plus, I was able to install an older google plus apk, which includes the old photos app. Turn off auto updates of google plus and don't look back. I found the working apk here http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google...-91034052-android-4-0-3-android-apk-download/

504 Errors

Lately, 504 errors in the Google Play Store have eliminated my ability to recommend this phone. None of the usual fixes work.
Apps that I've had the problem with are:
Evernote
Runtastic Me (after a recent update)
Waze (version 4)
Maybe it is something the app developers are doing that doesn't work with the hardware, but I'm afraid of what the next app may be that I'm stuck unable to update.
Update: this has been resolved by the latest update from Gionee/BLU
Is it Google Play Store causing the problems (installing/updating apps) or is it the apps you mentioned (crashing, etc.)?
Have you started getting them all of a sudden out of nowhere? I've started to have Google Play Services issues with Google Play Music, but that was after fixing permissions in TWRP.
Maybe something you've done recently caused it (installation, file corruption, root/xposed modding) if TWRP is not the cause.
I'll assume you've already tried to clear app data & caches, and maybe uninstalling/reinstalling them. If nothing else works, you can always resort to a factory reset of the phone if you are willing to give up everything.
I've done everything short of a factory reset. I read where another user had the issue with evernote, so I specifically tried installing evernote to test.
I haven't rooted or used a custom recovery with this phone.
I put this in general more for information purposes and to maybe compile a list of apps others run into this with, but if anyone's fixed it, I'd appreciate knowing what they had to do.
Will try APK or Amazon for offending apps soon.
No luck with Amazon, either, so it isn't a play store issue
Got the same 504 error when installing Waze 4.0.

Even manually installing the Waze 4.0 apk gives a generic "App not installed" error. Perhaps there's an incompatibility with this phone.

I think I've had the same problem before when installing a different (free) app. What I did was Google for an older version of the .apk file, then kept trying to install it to my phone until I found an old enough version that is willing to be installed. I was able to update to the latest version automatically without any problems after that.
Hope that helps!
Looks like Runtastic Pro 6.7 is getting added to the list. It may be some API that developers are using that isn't compiling properly on this phone... I hope it gets fixed
Reply from BLU support is that it is a known issue and an update is in the works.
I heard that something happened during the updates (like for Waze) that is causing issues for people with Mediatek CPU's, it does not seem to be intentional though as a fix seems to be in the works.
You can add app "omnivox" with the same error. Right for me it's omnivox and waze.
There was a recent gionee e8 update that hopefully resolves this and will (also hopefully) be ported to us soon.
Glad they're looking into it but this is really disappointing. Makes me want to finally break down and just get an S7 on T-Mo's payment plan.
Got the same problem here.
Hi guys, i just got the BLU pure XL and happen to me the same thing with waze, plus another app MapaRadar. They both cant install trough Play Store. I try installing old versions (waze 3.4 3.5 3.6 3.7 3.8 ..) only one time works. and then suddenly stopped. and it closes itself every time.
Update got the same 504 error.
I got another problem that after starting using play store to install other apps and update the existing ones (chrome, maps, framework..) the play store become unstable , closing itself most of the time. Since i have TWRP i manage to restore my original backup.
I did not update my apps on the play store. at least it stop to get play store app close itself.
If anyone like to share any alternative options until BLU team fix it.
Hi every body,
I have the Allview X2 xtreme the EU version of the Blu pure XL, and i have the same problem waze update return 504 error. Mine is TWRP and rooted.
I be able to install an older version of waze by apk, works fine for few days, now it's always looking for GPS signal....
Evernote too.
I have another problem with push notification who didnt work with 50% of m'y applications.
It works for :SMS, messenger, Facebook, snapchat but not for apps like instagram le monde, bfmtv, le parisien, le figaro...
I already perform hard reset.
Sorry for m'y English,
A french friend !
I justt flashed the gionee rom, mainly to see how it is for daily use, but also to check the IMEI corruption and mobile data issues (i experienced none of either) and on a whim I tried to install waze, and it installs fine (on the blu firmware I had previously had 504 error, as well had other apps just "app not installed")
so possibly gionee already had a fix for this?
Got an update this morning, and the problem seems to be fixed. Only about a week behind gionee, so not bad.

Strange App Behavior Just Started Last 24 Hours

Hi all
I have a Kindle Fire HD 10" bought on Black Friday special last month. I had no problems side-loaded and getting the GooglePlay Store up and running. I have installed apps from both GooglePlay and the Amazon App Store.
Over the last twenty four hours, several games and apps required updates in the GooglePlay Store. I applied them. I went to run them and I get an error message about SD Card Not Available. I have the 64GB Fire HD 10 and don't even have an SD Card installed. I have an option to select OK which just takes me out of starting the app or Download Again which when selected takes me to the Amazon Appstore and NOT the GooglePlay Store.
So I have tried a few things to troubleshoot. I uninstall the app in question. But it doesn't remove the icon. It is darkened but not removed. I then reinstall and it remains in that state and gives the SD Card error again. If I go to the GooglePlay Store and select Open on the app in question, it opens without an issue.
Several of the games use GooglePlay Games so I thought maybe that is an issue. I opened that app and it tells me there is an issue with GooglePlay Services. Is there an update for GooglePlay Services for the Fire HD 10 I am unaware of?
All the other apps work fine. It is just those that required an update in the last 24 hours. I don't have auto-update enabled and won't update any other apps if they appear until I get this worked out.
Is anyone else having this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue? Thanks.
TJ
Found Partial Solution
I searched before posting but then found this post --
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/help/google-play-store-apps-disappeared-t3721523
It provides the solution for the strange app behavior and SD Card Install error, however, I am still getting an error message with GooglePlay Games and the GooglePlay Services.
Does anyone have any possible solutions for that? Thanks.
Did you get any update in last 24h? I heard that Amazon and Google are not in good relationship anymore, so could be that Amazon already started blocking Google apps/services.

The last update I got was 12/03/17. The last I read was that Google was back in talks with Amazon to fix the YouTube issue and Amazon Video is now available on the Play Store. So I don't know what is up.
Getting the same problem here. I tried uninstalling, but the icons remain on the home screen. Upon further testing, I have figured out the problem has something to do with the Amazon launcher. If you install and open up another launcher (I used Nova) then all of your apps will be there and open just fine. Hopefully somebody finds a solution soon.

Going into Manage Apps and clearing the date on the Amazon launcher (Home Page) fixed part of the problem. Then just force quit, and restart the Fire.
My problem now is a connection issue with Google Play Services and Google Games that was fine three days ago but now throwing up errors.
Same issue here. I deleted Google Play and reloaded it from the saved APK. That worked but only for a while. I loaded Nova launcher and it runs Play with no problems, even though it is dimmed out on the Fire home page. Very strange. My guess is that Amazon is implementing Google countermeasures. There must be a lot of new Fire HD users bypassing the completely inadequate Amazon app store.

Forgot to mention that newly installed apps do not appear on the Amazon home page either. Bummer. I actually like the native home screens.

Google Discover/Google Companion Crashing

Hi all,
I have grown kind of addicted to having an easy access swipe to launch Google Discover from my Nova Launcher desktop. Lately, the panel crashes, which is kind of annoying. Does anyone know why this may happen? How can I diagnose this issue?
Any fix?
I just started with same crashes. Whenever I hit Google app to open it just "blinks" - it doesn't open. I cleared cache and data on assistant, Google and Google play services. It works for a while, hour or so, but then the same crash. I've been googling trying to find answers and found this thread. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Same here! I thought it was a server side update that introduced a bug, since downgrading the app doesn't help.
I've tried everything: clearing cache/data, downgrading, rebooting, unsubscribing from beta,... but it keeps crashing.
I saw no mention of it on AndroidPolice nor 9to5Google, so I thought it was me
---------- Post added at 09:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:31 PM ----------
Update: I deactivated "swipe to launch the discover" and it seem to solve the issue. Of course, you can't use it anymore but you can always asign a gesture to Google's app.
I bet it's a server side update from Google that ****s up Nova Companion. I've contacted the devs, but since the app hasn't been updated in 3 years, I wouldn't put so much hope there...
---------- Post added at 10:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:45 PM ----------
Update 2: got an answer from Nova: "Google Discover is a Google app, not ours. We simply give you access to it and nothing more. The issue you are experiencing is a Google issue. The known fix that can be found on the internet is: Phone Settings -> Apps -> Google App -> Uninstall Updates. If that doesn't work for you then contact Google directly."
I had already tried their fix before contacting them, so it's not working.
If it's on Google's side, then all hope is lost: good luck to contact a dev from Google who will take this issue in consideration.
True fix is uninstalling Nova Companion and setting a gesture to launch Google app. It's almost the same
