Is Shield Tablet (Gen 1) same as Shield Tablet K1 (Gen 2)? Are ROMs cross compatible? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I compare technical stats (cup, gpu, chipset, etc) of Shield Tablet 2014 (Gen 1) and Shield Tablet K1 2015 (Gen 2), they are exactly the same. Does that mean Gen 1 Tablet custom ROMs are also compatible with Gen 2 Tablet as well?
I tried to search forums, but I see no mention of Tablet K1 (Gen 2) separately, leading me to think that they might technically be the same and cross compatible at ROM level.

Usually but not always - unless otherwise specified they're compatible in my understanding.

Thanks. I quickly checked info a few ROMs, but I didn't find Gen 2 Tab (K1) mentioned there

They are not compatibles. And partitions are not the same.

The system partition is larger on the k1 so ota's aren't interchangeable but, all of the user created ROMs, recoveries, and kernel's are interchangeable so far. There are no actual hardware differences that aren't cosmetic besides a slot for the stylus and it's sensor.

I've run original Shield ROMs all the way back to Kitkat 4.4 on my K1. I don't really recommend bothering though because the OSs are just more buggy as you go back in time. I think the current Android 6.0.1 is probably the best release ever for these tablets (aside from Marshmallow's removal of App to SD).
I flashed between these with NVIDIA recovery images and installed them in fastboot. Returning to the K1's stock Lollipop ROM always worked fine.
One advantage to running original Shield ROMs is you get Trine 2 instead of that Sim Fallout game.

[Q] XOOM 2 MZ616 and CM11

Hello everybody..
There is some sites stating CM10 everest can be installed on MZ616..
http://androidjinn.com/cm10-android...for-motorola-xoom-3ginstallation-guide.html/2
http://www-motorolaxoom.blogspot.com.br/2013/12/cm10-android-412-jelly-bean-rom-para.html
Despite no screenshots of the achivement be shared till now, I wonder if this brand new CM11 everest (http://duckbox.info/android/cm-11.0/latest.php/everest) could be applied to XOOM 2 MZ616 (aka XYBOARD in USA).
Differences between XOOM and XOOM 2 resides specially on graphics chipset, and although XOOM 2 comes with with TI OMAP chip (that theoretically should be more compatible with android OS), XOOM with nVidia chip is the one officially supported by Cyanogen.
I tried to post this on the developer related forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2596566), but system blocked me (too new here), so the reason for this thread..
Anyone could help, please..?!
Many XOOM 2 and XYBOARD owners will be very grateful if this one works on them, since they have enough hardware capabilities to run KitKat..
Thanks!
I totally agree with you, it could be a nice present! I know it's old but jellybean is running by now on many devices with same specs.

I need guidance on how to root an original nvidia shield tablet

Hello Everyone. I'm new here but not new to tech in general, I do quite a bit with pcs just haven't got the experience with mobiles yet (why i'm here!) Anyway I have an original nvidia shield tablet (recalled model) and instead of wasting it I intend on turning it into a dedicated gamestream/netflix machine hooked up to an hdtv. As some of you may know nvidia has a killswitch that will deactivate the old tablet after the new one is setup. I believe the best/easiest way to get around this is to root the tablet and install the nvidia 2 .2 .2 firmware (running either 3.01 or 3.1 now I think) and delete the tegraOTA files. I've read that 2.2.2 does not have the killswitch and I need nvidia's firmware so that I can continue to use nvidia gamestream and my shield controller.
As mentioned I'm completely new to rooting, installing ROMs, and deleting system files, so I would appreciate if I could receive some guidance before I blow something up

Custom Roms with support for shield hub and shield controller?

K1 owner here. Really fed up with the terrible battery life I'm getting and was excited when I found out nvidia released a patch to fix it only to be immediately disappointed when they pulled it the same day. Many people on the Google plus page have recommended I use a custom ROM, and on my former nexus 7 2013 I usually did just that. However I invested in the controller and also like to use my tablet to play battlefront on my TV via nvidia game stream. Would I lose those features if I went to a custom ROM? Is there a " SAPPS" package to flash? Sorry if its been asked, been reading through 10 pages of custom ROM threads and can't find any info

Shield Hub (unless I am mistaken) is just another app and can be easily sideloaded. It actually just acts a front end for Google Play.
Regarding the controller I cannot say as I have no experience there.

Will K1 root/roms work on the original Shield Tab Wifi?

I have the original Shield Tablet Wifi. All the threads I'm seeing in the XDA forums are all K1. Will I be able to root my original Shield Tab with K1 instructions and use K1 roms?
I am under the impression that both are identical except that the K1 does not have the stylus. Is this accurate?

A Custom ROM that keeps the Nvidia software/features?

I mean...there's really no point in buying this if I can't get the Nvidia apps after getting a Custom ROM, so that's my question.
And can I...get the shield apps on another Android device? Although tbh, I want a Shield, just not sure.

Yes you can get the Nvidia Games app (the most important one) and Nvidia Dabbler from Play Store, and all custom roms come with the console mode app. Not sure if there are any other apps from Nvidia (haven't been on stock since I bought the tab) but this should cover basic functionality
