A Custom ROM that keeps the Nvidia software/features? - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I mean...there's really no point in buying this if I can't get the Nvidia apps after getting a Custom ROM, so that's my question.
And can I...get the shield apps on another Android device? Although tbh, I want a Shield, just not sure.

Yes you can get the Nvidia Games app (the most important one) and Nvidia Dabbler from Play Store, and all custom roms come with the console mode app. Not sure if there are any other apps from Nvidia (haven't been on stock since I bought the tab) but this should cover basic functionality

Alternative to Nvidia's apps ?

Hey,
One of the reason I purchased a Shield Tablet was the AOSP-like software, which I hoped meant that I would never need Custom ROMS for it. Well, I couldn't anticipate Nvidia's poor firmwares performances : my tablet is slow and unresponsive considering its specs.
So, I'm considering flashing CM11 on it but that would mean I'll loose Nvidia's apps.
What are your suggestions to replace them ? Limelight, Sketchbook Pro ? Perhaps some Xposed Framework add-ons for Stylus functions ?
If suggestions are many, I'll put them all in a chart.
Thanks !

I'm 90% certain anything else you flash is going to have the same issues, if not more, since every project out there is using an NVidia device tree and kernel with next to no modifications. Nvidia seems to have really screwed up the graphics drivers in this device - Garmin Viago causes an EGL crash, and I'm guessing that most of the lag/stutter issues are due to graphics subsystem sync issues. (All the specs in the world won't fix a deep-down sync bug.)

Nvidia shield console vs tablet

I need a little clarification. The Nvidia console is running the same type of android as the tablet but has integration with Android TV. So outside of a little bit of a spec boost why can't android TV be done on the Nvidia shield tablet using Console mode hooked up to a TV via HDMI? I'm really not seeing the difference in the two products other than some specs and hardware.

I just tried it then with my Xperia Z2 Tablet, I downloaded the apk from: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/leanback-launcher/. Then pressed home and selected it as my launcher. I then plugged my Xbox 360 controller into my OTG Cable, then into the Tablet. I was able to launch Leo's fortune without a hiccup. Try for yourself.
So technically I could do this with a MHL to HDMI adaptor, but im still going to be getting the Nvidia Shield because I want something permanent in my loungeroom

Did you have to root to do this? Also do you only need the launcher apk or any other files? Not sure if all the services would run the same.
My original point is I have the shield tablet not sure why it can't do exactly the same thing as the console.

I do have root but sideloading an APK doesnt require root. Try it yourself.
If you want that full Android TV experience though, I'd go with the Shield TV
I guess I don't k ow why the tablet can't do what the console does. They are so similar.

Maybe because they're two separate devices that are different things. While I guess I can see what you mean about them being similar, they're different form factors, meant fit different purposes. If you must, install adb drivers and sideload the launcher, or just transfer the apk and install. Tbh though, you're not missing out. True story - it's just a phone without its own screen with a limited launcher. The search function is kind of cool , but nothing amazing. You can say show me movies that won an Oscar in 2012 , or show me movies with Kevin Hart, and it will show you movies, but mostly not what your looking for. I only bought it because ive been streaming games via moonlight on my note 4, and I thought it would be nice to stream them to my tv.

Actually that is what I would like. Contextual search. Appletv is a letdown. Chrome cast has been good but I rather have the interface and the contextual search. I like how androidtv is laid out and interacts with Google now. With that said I already us the tablet so I not going to get the console, which brings me to the reason I am questioning why I can't recreate the same experience. I would like there is more than just the launcher.

Little bit of a spec boost? At least twice as powerful, and 4K at 60FPS to boot.
It also uses the android TV platform which even though it is based on 5.1.1 it is different then the tablet os.
Also the hardware is different.

Beside the spec boost what I want to to flash the android TV platform on my tablet but haven't seen a thread that does this. The lea back launcher is unresponsive when I use it (cannot tap anything on the screen).

If a rom doesn't have fully functional controller support, do you bother downloading

I am interested in knowing how many people bother with a ROM that lacks controller support.
For me, its the first thing I found out about a rom. Unfortunately, many developers don't see the need to post controller support in the main sections. I have to scroll through pages sometimes to find the answer.
Controller support is number one for me on this tablet. Gaming is the reason I chose this tablet over any other tablet. It makes very little sense to even bother with any roms that don't have it. IMO.
And some people purchase it because of the specs/price. Stock works just fine if you want to keep stock functionality, or just use the cm builds that have controller support. Also probably a better post for the Q/A section, not development.
By controller support I assume you mean Shield controller? Hooking up a PS3/PS4 controller is easier than changing diapers if you got root.
Well I've tried blisspop for a while, it kinda has support for the controller but from all the roms i've tried including CM, it's probably best to stick to stock with xposed and if you got the space, use multirom to dual boot the device. Custom roms just don't have the support for all the features the shield has, no game streaming, limited stylus support, limited shield controller support and the remote audio doesn't work at all. Basically if gaming is your primary use, use the stock rom.

I actually don't use this tablet for gaming, I just wanted a powerful, mostly stock Android tablet with an SD slot and unlocked bootloader for aosp/custom roms. I have tried a few other 7-8 inch tablets to replace this one but I ended up sticking with it (stock rom had some multitask lag / can't multitask for beans and custom roms are unstable-haven't tried zombipop tho).
I don't care if a rom lacks nvidia controller support.

^ This. I bought this device for general use, and to have something future-proof for a few years (unlike my last tablet that was stuck on 4.2 Jellybean). Never intended for the Nvidia controller.
As for the poll, I cannot really vote, since I am on a custom ROM that I didn't download (rather, rolled my own). I tried a build with the controller stuff in the vendor info, that just made the controller app crash over and over. I had to reboot, task kill the Controller app, then use TiBu to uninstall it. Whenever I get around to another build I will avoid the unofficial vendor stuff.
Since it was mentioned here, I may try Bliss in a little while as well.

Custom Roms with support for shield hub and shield controller?

K1 owner here. Really fed up with the terrible battery life I'm getting and was excited when I found out nvidia released a patch to fix it only to be immediately disappointed when they pulled it the same day. Many people on the Google plus page have recommended I use a custom ROM, and on my former nexus 7 2013 I usually did just that. However I invested in the controller and also like to use my tablet to play battlefront on my TV via nvidia game stream. Would I lose those features if I went to a custom ROM? Is there a " SAPPS" package to flash? Sorry if its been asked, been reading through 10 pages of custom ROM threads and can't find any info

Shield Hub (unless I am mistaken) is just another app and can be easily sideloaded. It actually just acts a front end for Google Play.
Regarding the controller I cannot say as I have no experience there.

[Q] Best 7.0 rom with nvidia apps?

Hi y'all!
Just got my shield. Disappointed with performance after ota. Wipe and reset on original rom did not resolve all of the issues.
Not familiar with the xda roms for this device. I want root, functioning camera, nivida game streaming. And lag free!
Free 4 all! What is best?
Share your experiences!
Cheers!
Functionality more important than android version! (at least 4 me).
Nobody knows?
Common community where r ya?
Maybe read the appropiate threads and judge by yourself?
It's not like there's 32 Nougat roms out there anyway
Nvidia apps = stock ROM.
good luck with that one, i haven't been able to find that on any rom for the shield tablet nougat or not. Other than stock based ones like hyperstock(which is what i use on my shield tab). I updated to nougat off of hyperstock mm but restored right back when i couldn't get nethunter to work. there doesn't seem to be very much going on with the shield tablet even with the recent update to nougat which sucks.
