Sorry, I suspect this will be a stupid question....
I'm just flashing a new ROM on my S6 and it's the first time I've tried it. The instructions say to copy the ROM file to the phone and then go in to TWRP and wipe everything. Would the ROM file not get deleted then too? Is there a specific place I should save it to?

Hi, save the file to your internal storage (downloaded files to the phone should automatically be saved to the folder "Downloads" witch is already the internal storage)
When you go to twrp to wipe, select advanced wipe and just make sure you don't check the internal storage

Since i'm still on stock and I was supposed to place the rar file on the root, not the extracted files.. How do I remove all the extracted files??? backing up from my restore wont work because I did the backup after I placed all the files on. DOH!

With root explorer app of your choice. Or Odin back to stock.
in the CM10 rar is has 2 folders: system and meta-inf
When i copied it to the phone the system folder merged with system folder on my phone, along with all the other deeper folders.
So so i have to go through an manually select ALL the files that merged and arent supposed to be there since im still running my stock rom.
That's essentially my question.
Think you need to Odin stock firmware .tar image to format and restore system partition unless those folders are still intact and show as system/system and system/meta which is possible. They need to run the binary to split the files inside the folders. You only copied the folders to the root. Should not have split them up. I could be wrong. Not sure how you copied them to system root. Should have went to SD root. Can't access system root from PC via USB. Would have to put there with file explorer.
Download the original zip, explore all its contents and remove each one individually.

They should just be sitting on the sd card. There are no original system, meta ect folders on sd card to merge with. Has me confused. Can't access system root from PC without using ADB. Also if on SD root would not affect anything and would not be in backup. Just delete the main folders that were extracted from the zip from the SD card.

i have no sd card. I installed abd then moved then extracted zip to the root of my internal memory. ATM i have installed CM10 and have no issues except for a huge chunk of my memory is gone.. if i delete the system folder from the root is it going to mess up a bunch of other things??

As long as it is on internal memory (SD) and not in the system partition should be no problem. If you mounted system in adb it is on or in the partition and not sure what to do except odin to reformat the partition. Some AOSP roms report the memory available wrong.
But he should have no issue finding it regardless of aosp storage issues. Op has no external, so he's either mnt/sdcard, internal, or usb storage. Emmc is out of play. Files should be clear as day. If you can put them on your root, you can take them off.
Agree with prdog, just Odin back if your unsure. But completely fixable.....
If I were you I'd give it more of a try without Odin just for the educational value.
Hi all, I tried to look for such a simple question but didn't find an answer, so..
I have a friend who has to sell his Tab. I have to clean it, so I can restore factory reset (settings - backup and restore), but I suppose his files and datas won't be deleted.
How to format the internal SD in an unrooted tab? Is there any option in stock recovery?

Use a file manager on the Tab or connect to a pc and delete everything in storage.
Hi, i have an htc m7 and as you know it's got no sd card slot. Now if i browse the internal storage i see a folder named sdcard when all my data is stored. If i wipe data in twrp before flashing, after installing the rom, the data wont get deleted. This time i wanto to delete all data on the sdcard, what option do i choose? Do i select internal storage before wiping? I want to reinstall the rom on a clean phone, without finding my data still there. Thanks
My problem as it stands:
TWRP 2.8.6.0 is installed
The Pure XL will boot, load all the way into android, and load all the built in apps.
I cannot install apps, and the google play store sits in a downloading loop.
The internal storage is empty save for a twrp folder. I can still read and write to the internal storage via twrp
I believe what I have done is erase all the contents of the internal storage.
Factory resets with the 3-15-2016 OTA update does not restore these folders/files.
Biggest issue: THIS IS MY WIFE'S PHONE AND SHE WILL KILL ME IF I CAN'T FIX IT.
Was wondering if one you fine fellow/ladies would upload a copy on the internal storage folders and files from a clean install of the 3-15-2016 OTA update so that I can attempt to copy them manually into my internal storage.
I would also take any help in restoring these files myself if a straight copy of the files isn't an option.
Any help will be appreciated!

A TWRP backup includes the TWRP folder for it is part of the internal storage. Therefore it will also backup all the large files which are present. It is therefore more convenient to keep the TWRP folder as small as possible, but it is up to you.
1. Go into TWRP recovery.
2. The path is button advanced button file management within the data folder you will find the media folder. Rename the media folder
temporarily to e.g. ABC.
3. Perform a new backup in TWRP and give it a new name. Don't leave TWRP but enter file management again.
4. You will find a new media folder. This is because TWRP creates this media folder, it includes your new backup.
5. Your follow-up actions will be to rename the new media folder into e.g. DEF and rename the temporary folder ABC (which is the original media folder)
back to media.
6. Restart your system and now you find a TWRP backup including internal storage in the DEF folder. Move this backup to the TWRP folder and delete
the DEF folder.
Thats it.
Do not forget when you perform a recovery with this backup to repeat step 6.

If backing up to external SD Card, media directory is not created, so just rename it back after the backup process. If rebooted without renaming back, then it recreates media directory.

Both options have drawbacks... I dont like wipe data option in TWRP to delete data including storage .

As I understand our media should be back up in ABC. So during recovery after "format data" or "wipe including internal storage" it will restore our media in ABC folder, do we need to rename it back to media using TWRP to complete recovery?
My understanding is that internal storage will stay in ABC, and not be visible when boot in System(not doing step 5). In system we will have the newly created media empty (because we can not do step 6 DEF folder is actual internal storage and will not be included in back up).
So do you mean that we need to do step (5) after recovery? Not step (6)?

Guys, does anybody know, why twrp doesn't see an option data including storage (large sd needed) while I am trying to restore it? It definitely is present in the backup
I followed this guide and the backup size is 28591MB (boot, data, system). However, the internal memory of my S4mini is only 8GB. How can the /data/media folder be bigger than the internal memory? It is not stored on the external sd card is it?
UPDATE: I deleted the /data/media/0/DCIM/.thumbnail folder and now the backup is only 4950MB
