Hi All,
I'm curious if MX Player is compatible with Android N.
There are a few reports that the Pro version crashes as soon as it is run.
Can anyone confirm if this is true on the Pixel C running Android N?
Many thanks!

Yes. Unfortunately pro version has broken.
Google has implemented the new restrictions which prevents the developers from accessing non public APIs.
Pro version is crashing while checking the license.
Android N is on early preview for developers & not for the daily users. OTA is doesn't check the prerequisites. It has hard bricked many devices.

Also I'm not getting any audio running (non-pro) mx player under Android N on a Nexus 6.
For those of you running Android N on a Nexus 6, just an FYI that VLC works, though it can be choppy at times.

Probably your video might have ac3/dts audio track. Kindly download custom codec from my custom codec thread.

I have the AIO 1.8.x custom codec installed. Looks like network streaming a file with an AC3 audio doesn't show the audio stream, but locally playing a file locally with AC3 audio works. (Same file both times.) So I don't think it's a codec issue.
VLC is playing the audio stream from the network streamed file fine.

Google has restricted usage the non public APIs. So, the existing H/W+ method may no longer possible. The developer is already working on alternative method. It may take some more time to land on beta channel.
Till that we have to wait......

Android N feedback. When MX Player is in multiwindow it stops whenever anyone interacts with the other app. It starts playing again when touched again.
I assume that it an interaction with the Multiwindow lifecycle which causes other apps trouble as well.
See http://developer.android.com/preview/features/multi-window.html
Willing to test and send logs if of use.

It's because of the way multi-window implementation in Android N. When you interact with other apps it switches other app in pause state. The player needs to be changed to work on pause state.
BTW, enable "Background Play" from Settings > Player. So, MX Player will continue to play even when other apps are set to Top.
One more thing if other app also using some multimedia content like audio/video playback MX will loose audio focus. So, it may pause. If you want to play despite of audio focus, disable "Play Alone" from Settings > Player.

Audio play issue with build 3 of Android N.
Mx-player fails to play the audio files (songs) using sw codec. It only play them with HW codec.
It worked great playing the same songs in build 2 of Android N.
The files are a mix of mp3 and flac songs.
another questions, is how can I force Mx-player to use hw codec for songs, it kept reverting to sw codec and I had to manually change codec for each song.

Also the XDA download tab is no longer updated as for some reason I cant remove them.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Check which version you need by going to Local Player Settings/Decoder/General
in the Custom Codec tab it will tell you which one is needed (x86,x86_64,neon,neon64/ARMv8).
Note: skip step 1 if your using aio (all in one) version
2. Download the one you need (No need to unzip it)
3. Go back to Local Player Settings/Decoder/General
and tap the Custom Codec tab then select the version you downloaded. DONE!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) :
What's the difference between MX Player Codec Packs on Google Play and Custom Codec?
MX Player Codec Pack not only contains ffmpeg library, It contains many other libraries required to work properly. If you download MX Player from Google Play mostly it will contain the required libraries according to your device architecture. You have to install codec packs from Google Play only if MX Player asks to install. Custom codec is just a modified version of the ffmpeg library used in MX Player. It's modified to include support DTS/Dolby(ac3) audio tracks. So, Codec Pack is mandatory if MX Player asks to install it. Custom Codec is optional and It's required only if you want to play the videos with DTS & Dolby (AC3) audio tacks
Why Custom Codec is not updated even though MX Player is updated?
In Many occasions MX Player may updated without any changes to ffmpeg library. So, Custom Codec will also remain same. The custom codec version required will be directly forced by the player itself. So no need to worry about it. If it's not compatible MX Player will not load at all.
How do I know that my Custom Codec is outdated & needs an update?
Whenever MX Player is updated, It will check the custom codec version loaded. If it's outdated it will show a error message that shows "Custom Codec is out of date. Replace it with the new version". Otherwise there is no need to check this thread for the new Custom Codecs.

What do you meant?
Can you explain the problem you are facing....
Does not play dts audio or any video?
Have you changed the rendering to HW+ or SW not HW...?
In the latest build of MX Player there is no option in preference to enable SW audio with hw playback.
You have to enable SW audio via audio track button if you are using HW rendering instead of HW+ or SW.
I have personally tested neon build and it is working perfectly.
Even my old build also working with the current version.

When I go to the Decoder section, click on the directory with the files, then MX Player restarts... I'm getting a popup. This is with MX Player 1.7.12 on a Nexus 4 (4.2.2 stock rooted):
Popup says...
MX Player:
Unsupported device or component file corrupted. Please uninstall the application completely then reinstall it if the problem persists.
OK
When I hit the OK button, MX Player closes and when I reopen MX Player, the codec files aren't selected anymore in the Decoder section. I've uninstalled and reinstalled MX Player a few times, also tried just Force Stop ing it, and clearing its cache, but the same thing happens. This was all working perfectly on 1.7.11, so I suspect it's something with the new version of MX Player, but I don't know how to tell what it is.

Cant change audio track in HW mode
When playing an mkv file with two audio tracks when using HW mode
the player does not actually change audio track even though the new audio track is selected
why is this?
when using HW+ mode changing audio tracks works fine
though HW+ does have its own problems
Playback can suddenly stop at certain points of a video
(I have a mkv video that stops in the exact same place when using HW+)
Seeking does not work( ie cant jump to half way though the video)
when you enable SW for audio there are jumps in the video and the audio drops in and out
after a short while the audio stops dropping in and out and the video stops droping frames but then the video and audio are
out of sync
Hopefully these problems will be fixed soon, as aside from these issues MX Player is awesome!
happy with MX Player Pro purchase
I would like to help improve MX Player,
can we send in logs to help improve MX Player?

Can you just uninstall the MX player and try install this again , might be well help you .
Same issue on Xiaomi Mi5: SW and HW+ options don't work, in HW mode changing audio track does nothing.
I just purchased MX Player Pro from the Google Play store and have v1.7.40 (neon)installed on my Nexus 6. Since I have a lot of video files with AC3 audio, I installed the custom AC3 codec found here on XDA (automatic restart applied). After that, I configured MX Player Pro to use HW+ decoding and failover to HW decoding.
I can't seem to get videos to play at all. I open a video and it sits there like it's on pause. I've tried multiple video files and get the same result. Most are x.264, one is x.265. I've tried changing it to HW decoding as well as SW decoding but get the same result. I've force stopped the app and tried again after clearing the app data and telling it NOT to use the custom codec but still get the same result. Am I doing something wrong? I really like MX Player Pro but I'm going to need to refund it if I can't get it to work.
EDIT: On some videos that I start, if I manually fast forward, I don't see any video at all. On the x.265 video, I can manually fast forward and see the video frame of where it's at in the timeline but it just never plays.
END EDIT
On a side note, after launching MX Player Pro for the first time, I was not prompted to install the codec package so I installed it manually.
Thanks so much to anyone who takes the time to read this and/or assist with this matter.
Well, assuming by "codec package" you mean the ARMv7 Codec package on the Play Store, you don't need these codec packages by default. On the contrary, the fact that you installed the custom codec may be what's causing the playback issue.
The Custom Codec on XDA here is purely for AC3 and DTS audio compatibility, and generally shouldn't affect video playback.
To be certain, are you using the stock Nexus 6 ROM? If yes then which build in particular?
Also, if you could collect an error log after it freezes, that would help.
How-to MX Log Collector - Error Logs
@phoney_stuff
H/W+ may cause issues with certain videos. I don't recommend it to use it as default.
Just try to start the video in S/W decoder (log press the video & from menu > play using > SW decoder.)
Don't resume if it asks.
Let me know the results.
If you still have issues, kindly collect the logs immediately after playing the video & upload here.
@CDB-Man
As you know Custom codec is same as the inbuilt ffmpeg which comes with mx player itself. But, ac3 & dts support is enabled. So, it may not be the issue.
Both H/W+ & S/W decoders use ffmpeg. If the issue is there in S/W it might be an issue related to ffmpeg itself.
Gentlemen,
Thanks for the reply!
I'm running stock Android 5.1.1 on a non-rooted device, latest version, screenshot attached.
My first attempt was without the codec that's is available on the Play store, but with the custom AC3 codec. When that failed, I installed the codec from the Play store and got the same result. Then I tried it again after removing the custom AC3 codec (leaving the codec available from the Play store in place) and, again, got the same result. In a past experience of playing videos in MX Player with AC3 audio without the custom codec, the video would play without audio which is what I was hoping to achieve as a troubleshooting step (to see if the custom codec was causing a problem).
Currently, I have MX Player Pro installed with the codec that is available on the Play store as well as the custom codec to play AC3 audio. This is the config which we're basing our tests on as of now. Please let me know if I should remove the codec that I downloaded from the Play store. Also, I deleted the x.265 video that I mentioned in my previous post and obtained another video encoded in x.264. Regardless of this, it's important to note that I get the same result with ANY video I attempt to play. I'm attaching my loss for your review as requested. In this test, I have HW+ fully disabled in settings and SW decoding fully enabled. I also choose to start the video from the beginning rather than resume. Again, thanks so much for the help. Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to help troubleshoot this issue.
@phoney_stuff
The issue is not with MX Player.
MX Player is not getting audio focus.
Looks like some other app is trying to keep the audio focus. That's why mx player is not playing any video.
Goto Settings > Player & Disable "Play Alone"
Then try again.
Note:
If you disable the option "Play Alone" MX Player will keeps on playing the video regardless of the status. For e.g it won't pause if you receive a call. So, best solution is that find the app that is stealing the audio focus & uninstall it or if there is any particular Settings in that app kindly adjust it.

That did the trick, or it could be that I'm not currently using the phone that did the trick.... or both. VIC works while I'm on the phone so I guess I was expecting MX Player to do the same.
I'm going to leave Play Alone disabled since I like the option of playing audio our video when I'm on the phone.
Would it be too much for me to request an feature (toggle-able) to have MX Player to pause when it loses audio focus?

As in, using your version shouldn't in and of itself cause playback issues! As in, the issue is likely not caused by the fact that you are using the custom codec, but probably something else!

Enabling "Play Alone" does precisely just that? As in, make MX stop playing when it loses audio focus if another app plays...
@CDB-Man enabling Play Alone also prevents it from playing when it doesn't have a audio focus to begin with.

This is what the issue is.
Just find out the app that steals/keeps audio focus. Disable it or uninstall it.
You can now play even when "Play Alone" is enabled.
This is used to pause MXPlayer when you loose audio focus (like call or notification or alarm or Playback from another player). That's why it's enabled by default.
It's not the fault of MX Player.

Subtitle rendering & Media Playback both are individual functions. It less likely to conflict.
Just downloaded the original video & tested myself. After test & trails I have found that "Improve SSA rendering" option in Settings > Subtitle > Text is somehow affects when using new HW+ decoder for video decoding. Report passed to the developer. Just disable it as a temporary solution till the developer fixes the issue.
Edit: Update from developer
@caspianprince
It's internally fixed & next update will fix the issue with SSA subtitle rendering issue when used with new HW+.

It's not a bug. Android 5.0+ provides a official API to use system decoders in native programming language. When a particular encoding profile is not supported you may still have issues in new HW+ as well.

This is on my MiniMXQ TV Box Android v4.4.4 - 1GB/8GB - Rockchip RK3229 SOC
MX Player Pro V1.7.40
Video file "Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica - 01 10bit H.264 AAC.mp4"
HW+ - Normal video speed and sound, but image has intermittent break-up from small to large areas.
HW - Frozen perfect image, if you select another point in the video, you get 1/2 second of playback and then a freeze, perfect image
SW - video and sound quality great, but video is very jerky
Thanks for the help

It looks like a system decoder issue. If it's supported it suppose to be playable in HW decoder. When you have tried HW decoder, it hows thrown a unknown error. Does any other player works? I think that particular video will have issues with every player?
Can you try MX Player Pro 1.8.9 beta 2 & share the bug report again?

Beta versions will work on Android 4.0 & above.
You can download the latest nightly version from the official beta webpage ( https://sites.google.com/site/mxvpen/translation/test-build )
mpeg2video has broken in last version of MX Player Pro 1.9.5. It reports "This video format (mpeg2video) is not supported".
MX Player Pro 1.9.5 ARMv7 Neon was installed from Google Play.
Hello,
My MX Player Pro was updated to 1.9.5 from Play Store.
Since the update, I cannot play any MPEG2 videos.
Before the update all .mpg, .ts and .REC video files worked fine.
Now I get "This video format (mpeg2video) is not supported."
(well, mine is in finnish but it translates to that)
Is this a bug or planned issue?
My player is ARMv7 NEON on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 & Samsung Galaxy S7
Have you tried using the custom codec from the codecs thread?

No, not yet.
Actually, for years I have just been using MX Player without any problems and without knowing about any custom codecs.
All my files has been standard mpeg2, mpeg4 or h264 stuff so nothing custom about them at all.
All these including mpeg2 have been working fine for years now.
So maybe I will need to look in to those.
mpeg2video not supported
After upgrading MX Player to 1.9.6 at Samsung S5Neo the .ts files recorded at Synology from DVB-T cannot be played. It says "mpeg2video not supported". Same applies to the DVB-T live stream.
Use custom codec.
You also started a duplicate thread.

Ok, the custom codec works for me on mxplayer 1.9.6... But why was the support dropped?
Having the same issue. It started last night and I'm running 1.9.5

can you collect a bug report & share with us?

So is this really the way things work with MX Player Pro from now on?
I must use custom codec to watch mpeg2 decoded videos and for every new update of MX Player I will need to get new custom codec?
I updated the MX Player Pro yesterday to 1.9.8 (I think it was 1.9.5) and now the custom codec (1.9.0) that I have won’t work with it.

Goodbye MX Player
I won't be using this app anymore. I need mpeg2. Period.
No reason to have this app without it.
No time to root my android tablet or play little games with codecs.
It used to to a good job, now it is just a vegetable.
Goodbye

Read two posts above yours. Custom codec pack adds that functionality and more.

Even with the custom codec I am still having compatibility issues that I never had before this change with MPEG2 files - audio pauses and subsequent desync, anybody else showing similar?
Just playing DVB-T recordings.
