Will OTA to marshmallow destroy root and s-off? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I just got a refurbished m8 from insurance, and instead of using adb to root and unlock I had to use kingroot and firewater or sunshine..whatever it's called. I haven't been able to flash a custom recovery yet, but I have an OTA to upgrade to marshmallow.
If I upgrade will I still be unlocked and rooted?

You will still be unlocked but it will either fail to flash or you will no longer be rooted (it's easy to reroot though). If I were you I would upgrade by flashing the marshmallow ruu or if your interested in custom roms then just flash the mm firmware and whatever rom you like.

So the problem I'm having is I'm running Linux and even though I have downloaded the sdk platform I can't figure out how to flash anything. Also why do I need the marshmallow firmware for custom roms?

The 3rd link here will get you updated firmware (but not the os) + the latest TWRP and is flashable without a computer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-one-m8/development/stock-m-firmware-nand-recovery-t3330972/page36
You don't necessarily need MM firmware for custom roms but it's recommended to have firmware that matches the software version your custom Rom is based on. I guess I assumed you were interested in MM based roms.

pardon my ignorance but I'm trying to figure out what RUU is. When I got my m8 2 years ago none of this existed I would use adb to do everything manually, now it seems like there is some new wave.
From what I googled RUU is specifically for LOCKED bootloaders (S-on) ? since my device is unlocked won't that ruin my phone? also how can I flash TWRP with just my phone?
my plan was just to flash clean rom back to my phone it's what I've been using, if I flash the mm firmware wouldn't that mess with functionality? does MM have any advantages over Loli?

Not many people have these phones, so traffic is very slow on this forum.
You have an engineering device with a userdebug testkeys firmware on it.
The good news is that your device can run any firmware because it has an unlocked bootloader, so all you need to do is download the full XML.zip for the current release for your region and flash it using RSD Lite.
The bad news is that a stock OTA update cannot be loaded successfully on that firmware because it's a testkeys build with different signatures and other debugging components, so you will have to manually upgrade it to a stock build.
You have a very unusual device and must have purchased it from someone who was a tester originally.
Enjoy it!
Edit: Here is the best link to find the right firmware files.

U mean , I can download any firmware file and flash it via RSD? ,, hey. , wait a minute, my country/region is not in the list , what now? Which will be the correct firmware to use?
P.s I'm now looking forward to root and flash a custom JB rom, my bootloader is already unlocked, so if I manage to root my device,, can I just flash cwm recovery and start flashing wiping and flashing Roms? Btw , what do you recomend , upgrade or root?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda app-developers app
Yes, you should be able to just fastboot the latest CWM or TWRP recovery image for the xt925 and then flash anything you want because a status 1 device is a true engineering model that is NS(Non Secured) and performs no signature checks at all on the bootchain.
Rooting these devices is simply a matter of flashing a zip from the custom recovery and no exploits are required.
You also already have root in adb shell, that is what userdebug means.
You will have to find the best firmware for your region and carrier and it may take some experimenting and/or reading to find which is best for you.
Definitely make a full backup of your current build so you can restore it as needed.
You have more possibilities due to the completely unlocked status of the device but it also means you are on your own and must manage it yourself and be responsible for understanding how to do that.
Fair deal!

Latest for CM11S is 05Q and Oxygen is only available through a flashable zip. So you will need to unlock the bootloader in order to flash it.
You can also wait for CM12S to come out "later this week," which should be available through an OTA.

You can use a toolkit, but I would suggest against it.
@timmaaa has an excellent thread that has been posted here which gives you literally everything you need to unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery, etc.
If you flash Oxygen, you will not be able to OTA to 12S. However, I'm sure there will be flashable zips up the same day it comes out.

Always need root just to install custom roms . If we can install roms without root , then we don't need root anymore ( I am still lost ). Now I can wait for custom 6.1 roms.
Its not ideal but at least you dont have to go through the whole reroot process each time you want to change roms. And you can still flash zips etc in safestrap.

Can we run and use apps which require ROOT access?
I'm a bit confused though. Don't custom ROMs come pre-rooted???? So wouldn't flashing a custom ROM which is pre-rooted....... remain rooted?

You cannot have a rooted MM rom with locked bootloader because to have root requires a custom kernel which locked bootloaders cannot flash. It doesnt matter if the rom is prerooted or not! Stock Boot.img means no root. You cannot run apps that require root with these roms All this method does if give you some options the biggest option being the ability to flash zips. and change roms with out having to odin back to stock pb1 then reroot then. Try the stock MM rom I posted. Once installed you can flash a debloatzip or a knox removal zip or delete apps from safestrap with the built in file manager If you dont like you can always downgrade back to PB1

@jrkruse How does this work?
Based on my knowledge from reading this, it seems that the kernel finds the checksum of the system partition and then only boots if it is unmodified.
Shouldn't modifying the system partition in the slightest bit throw this checksum off?
Also - modified kernels CAN be flashed on locked bootloaders - just not via Odin. They only won't boot though >.>

Download this rom
Download my Patch
In safestrap do a manual wipe. Wipe Data,WipeCache,Wipe System
Install Rom
Install patch
This rom Does not flash system.img so you dont need to install safestrap it will stay installed
After patch is installed wipe data and wipe cache and install MM Bootloader zip
Reboot it will take 15 to 20 min to boot
Now you will Have A Note 5 port with working theme support

Rooted Nexus 6P Issues - Plus Looking to Upgrade to Nougat

I rooted my Nexus 6P when I purchased however a few months ago, something happened which kind of messed up my root. I can't remember now exactly what it was (maybe I updated OTA) however when I run Root checker, I get the message "Sorry! Root access is not properly installed on this device". Also Titanium Backup complains about my device not being properly rooted.
The strange thing is, my banking apps complain that my device is rooted and don't give me the full functionality
Also, my phone always downloads monthly updates, but I haven't been able to install since around June. It has now downloaded Android 7.1.1 and after trying to install this morning, it just booted into TWRP.
I'm after 2 things..
to have a properly rooted phone again
to have Android 7.1.1 installed
What's the best way for me to achieve this? What's actually happened to my phone? I would like to achieve the above 2 things with zero data loss if possible

If you are talking about stock OTA updates, that doesn't work on rooted devices.
To do stock OTA updates you need to remove root, you need stock recovery instead of custom recovery and you need to have an unmodified system partition.
Flash your stock firmware then update then root again after all updates are installed.

So if I don't want to do the stock update, then how do i fix my root first of all?
After I fix my root - Can i perform an update to 7.1.1 via a non-stock method? ie. download the update somehow and flash via ADB or install via TWRP?

As I said, flash your original stock firmware, then apply any stock updates that you want and THEN root. The 7.1.1 OTA is a stock update.
YOU CAN'T APPLY STOCK UPDATES WHILE YOU ARE ROOTED AND YOU CAN'T DO STOCK UPDATES IN CUSTOM RECOVERY.
Or you can flash stock firmware to fix the device, then install root and custom recovery again and then if you want to flash a CUSTOM 7.1.1 you flash it in recovery but you can't apply the stock 7.1.1.
