I am in the market for a new car stereo HU. They come with a USB connection, most of them at least, and I need to know if the ones I am interested in will charge my phone.
The USb is designed for ipod playback, which I intend to use with my ipod 5th gen, but I would also like to have the convenience of the charging port for my other devices.
So what do I need to look for?
I found a few threads where people mentioned they can charge their android phones via some of these HU, but not specifically the Skyrocket.
The ones I am interested in
Kenwood KDC-252U
Kenwood Excelon KDC-X395
Pioneer DEH-3400UB
You're probably just gonna have to test it yourself man; chances are your Skyrocket will charge. I've charged my skyrocket on my buddies HU before, I don't know the model but I think it's a Kenwood.
Just look at the output, these days they consider that a selling point. 1A and you're golden.
I picked up a Kenwood at Best Buy with a port on the front, in GB I could play off the SD card but not in ICS. They have an app that has to index your card and makes a head u it readable playlist.

Hey, I had a good search and found a lot of general info on this but I couldn't find anything specific to our device, so here goes:
Has anyone had any luck using a USB headphones amp / DAC with their One XL via USB OTG? I'm looking specifically at the FiiO range but would love to hear of any others that have been confirmed to work. I'm hoping for a very confident "it'll probably work" before I spend $++
I'm running the latest AOKP 4.2.2 release preview (Rohan). I have got various USB peripherals working via a $5 OTG cable, including a keyboard & mouse and memory stick [StickMount didn't work but I was able to access the contents under /mnt/usbdisk just fine with ES File Explorer].
I'm happy flashing different kernels but don't really have experience manually editing linux system files.
I've read / skimmed most of this monster thread on head-fi, and the consensus seems to be that YMMV depending on the two devices, USB DAC and phone, used: http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/1320
I also have a Nexus 7 that I would be far less concerned about breaking in the name of research, and I also happen to own the Logitech G930 gaming headset that some people have reported success with with Android, so I might have a crack getting that to work before I buy anything else.
Cheers!

After you skimmed some one posted a master update:

I want to believe that most of the diy dacs will work because 90% use a PCM2707 to talk to the usb. Then either they use the pcm2707 internal decoder, or feed the is2 signal from the pcm2707 to a higher quality dac
Hi everyone,
I know this has been confirmed elsewhere on the net, but I didn't see anything here so thought I would pass this on to the more hardcore audio fans here.
I tried all my USB DACs last night - RSA Intruder, Apex Glacier, HeadAmp Pico, Leckterton UHA-6S.MKII and all are working with the Xperia Z.
great news! thanks mate!

I recently got the MW1 (only €19!!!) and learned about DACs (apparently there's a pretty good one inside, Wolfson). Now using this together with the MDR-1R and my Xperia Z! Really nice.
The DACs you are talking about are standalones? How would you use these and why? And why so many? Sry noob questions, but would really like to know.
Yeah, standalone DACs/amps. You would use these because they give you better sound quality than the phone itself does, and also the amplification makes them able to drive less sensitive headphones, which phones are unsuited for. Now that Sony, HTC, and Samsung all have USB audio in their phones it means I never have to care how good or bad my phones inbuilt sound quality is, I know I'll always have awesome sound quality regardless.
As for why so many, well, no particular reason apart from I wanted to know which I liked best and I'm taking my sweet time about deciding!

Thanks for the explanation.
What do you mean by less sensitive headphones?
If I understand, newer model phones all have a DAC inside already?
In my case, because there's a Wolfson DAC in the MW1, would you recommend using MW1 or just using Xperia Z (in the case of audio quality) ?
PlugAndPlay
Is it a simple plugAndPlay or do you have to restart the phone with the DAC plugged in?
Would love to attach a Behringer X302 to my (future) Xperia Z
It's only 42Euro at Thomann.de
According to the Android App USBAudioRecorderPRO
i can record a signal with the Xperia Z (hopefully)
Think that output is also possible?

All phones have a DAC inside, a DAC is a digital to analog converter, and is required for the playback of digital music and sound.
The advantage of bypassing the phones internal DAC, which is what is being done with USB audio, is that if a phone has a poor DAC (or good DAC that is poorly implemented for that matter) you're not stuck with that.
Headphones and IEMs have varying sensitivity to a given input signal - some require more power to drive effectively (and when I say drive effectively I mean drive to both good listening volume levels and adequately control the driver of the headphone to get the best from it). That's a fairly simplistic and ham-fisted explanation right there to get the basic gist across, if you really want to understand 'sensitivity' you should take a look at somewhere like Head-Fi and so some reading about sensitivity and input impedance (for starters). As a general rule IEMs tend to be more sensitive than full-sized headphones.

I haven't tried input, I expect that will require USB Audio Recorder Pro. I can check that with my generic Logitech mic.
Connection via a hub should work fine, at least for output, have done that with my S3 and Note II and it's fine. Not sure about simultaneous input and output via a hub though.

You can use a Y-split cable according to some at Head-Fi, however I believe it will only charge the attached peripheral and not the phone.

Probably not if driver installation is required. I have the Audio-GD Reference 10 by the way, they make some stunning gear.

Hi, I am really interested in knowing more. Could you tell me how you plugged the Xperia Z? Is it a direct plug and play using USB out from the Z. ANY SPECIAL CABLE NEEDED OR JUST THE CHARGER USB CABLE?
Appreciate the info. :good:
Hi,
I'm very interested in this thread.
I bought that device for my xperia z, ESI Dr. dac nano.
But it doesn't work "power consumption error message", because this dac is usb powered :s.
I think the xperia z will only accept dac/AMP which work with their own battery, do you have a device to test this ?
i'm also very interested in the hrt microstreamer but it is also usb powered, so i won't buy it until i have a proof it can work with an xperia z.
I think your not new in "the word of usb dac/amp" could you give me an advice if i want to buy a battery powered usb dac/amp, as small as possible and with a sound as good as the microstreamer(only basing on review :s)?

You are right in that you need a self powerd amp/dac. I suggest the Sony PHA-1.
By any chance do you know if for Xperias equiped with 4.1 Jellybean connection to outside amp/dacs is plug n play or do you need special app?
Does anyone have an idea whether its possible to use MHL + OTG with charging on the Skyrocket? Whether it be stock or an aftermarket rom/kernel doesn't matter. I can't seem to find a definitive answer on this phone, but I'm leaning toward not possible.
This is what I planned on ordering. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LAZG2M/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I would assume since the MHL adapter puts the device in charge mode, it wouldn't read the attached usb device (if using a hub or y adapter) since it is not in Host mode. Any have any experiance with this or have any links they can provide. It would be much appreciated!

I have the same cable and mhl works as long add the rom supports it. As for your question I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1741583&page=21 and on the last page there is a link for someone who got it to work on as3 however our phones have different pin configuration but you should be able to do the same thing as him
OTG while using MHL sounds like a great way to fry something important on your phone. it's clear the note 2 had something like this in mind with the smart dock. it looks like the smart dock works with the S3 so it could be that the way they designed the usb port it all just works as needed for this.
I'm interested in the usecase/motivation for doing both at the same time if you don't mind sharing.

Well my Skyrocket screen was destroyed by my youngest son So, I had an idea to use the old phone with the MHL adapter to connect to my TV (which is not a smart TV). The need for the OTG is to plug in peripherals such as kb/mouse, but after further review, i could probably just use bluetooth. The device itself doesn't need to have much storage really, all of the movies are being streamed from my mini home server (DLNA).
So instead of going out and spending 60 on a smart TV adapater, I figured I would try to make use of what I already had, a phone with a broken screen. I'm not even sure the digitizer works and I was unable to find a replacement screen a decent price. The phone has already been replaced with a Nexus 4, so I'm not really concerned with the "safety" of the skyrocket.
I think it would be nice to use it as a TV adapter, surf net, play games watch movies while in bed using a wireless mouse/keyboard.
You would think there would already be something like this out there...
I came across this, then noticed their statement "Use Bluetooth keyboard for wireless control" Which really tells me no OTG... and heard was broken ha.

I just got two different ones and the s22u reports "usb device not recognised" and they do not work for audio out. Is there a workaround for this? I can't believe usb c audio out is busted.
Use the Samsung one... it must have a compatible built in DAC.
I don't see one in shop sansung,, but an old WISH one we bought fir our N20U works fine...its just uglier...lol!
I just tried a Google USB C to headphone converter that came with a Pixel phone several years ago and it worked fine with a Samsung S21U. I’ll have to try it again when my S22U arrives later this month.

The easiest way is to use Buds+ or a LDAC headphones. It won't charge well (no fast charging, very slow charging if at all) with the screen on. If using bluetooth and an app like Poweramp with the screen off it will charge normally.

If you use a player like Poweramp with the screen off it uses little power going through the dongle DAC. If you need an active internet connection you can't do that. Another reason I don't like cloud crap instead of an SD card.
We have plenty of music storage on our 512gb s22u. I just need a way to get it into the car...lol!
(We also don't use the cloud...we rely on local storage.)

Simply use Poweramp as it's a powerful music player. Setup is lengthy but is extremely configurable. The music library must be redundantly backed up along with the Poweramp setting export file. Lose either one and you are boned. Many hours can go into setting up Poweramp settings and play lists.
My music collection is 224 gb plus even more movies and it's kept on the .5tb SD card is spite of having 512gb internal memory so a crash can't wipe it. My other 256gb N10+ will likely get a 1tb SD card.
Only the apps, the DCIM and the download folders (both temporary for holding) go on the internal memory. The N10+ SD cards are then redundantly backed up to multiple stand alone hdds which are the primary backup. I don't have too much faith in flash memory for data retention.
The reason I'll never have a S22U is no SD card slot, and I want a right handed spen. Samsung actually said most users hold the phone with their right hand. Not. Idiots.
Samsung has gone rock stupid.
Meh, don't get me started Samsung started going off road with the N20U and is now lost somewhere in the iPhone badlands.
I enjoy pointing that out to "we still have the 3.5mm jack" Samsung...
Honestly, if I need more storage I'll just use the usbc dongle and plug a portable drive in.
Part of the reason all phones moved to internal ram and ditched the sd cards us the sd cards are slower.. so you can't record 8k 30 or 60 fps video to them, and users buying cheap slower cards were slamming the devices because of the poor resulting performance.
I'd also prefer the s pen back on the right, but the handset just performs a lot better than the n20u, and the camera is just jaw dropping amazing.
A data drive doesn't need to be fast, it needs the be large. It can transfer data at whatever speed from the OS drive, it only needs to be fast enough for streaming movies and music.
V-30, [email protected] maybe too slow for 8k
V-60 or 90 are fast enough for 8k*.
Regardless the DCIM folder should be on internal memory... so again speed is not needed. V-30 will support 4k vids (3840 x 2160 pixel) which overkill for this display size.
Not isolating the OS drive from the data drive is a mistake with serious implications.
It also needlessly and arbitrary limits the storage capacity of the device... just like a bad Apple.
My first N10+ is 512/12gb, the second is 256/12gb because it's just the OS drive. Nothing tangible is gained in my application by having more internal memory... so I didn't. The only thing that is important is having a V-30 rated SD card.
*a dedicated pro cam be a better choice at this resolution than a smartphone. The lens and sensor size of a smartphone is inadequate for needed light gathering ability.
Who's Samsung trying to fool?
So if you hate the s22 series, why are you in the s22 forum?
You asked how to hook it up...
Furthermore if you get a combination dongle that allows charging and playback you will create a ground loop, do not do this.
Funny...I've been using a combo charger/ audio jack dongle for two years now on our n20u since its release with zero issues.

Yeah I know... but then you never saw what happens when a 50khz feedback loop developes.
Amp output>crossover network>tweeters>
Takes a second or less to burn out the voice coils, may also damage the power amp.
If direct coupling (optical toshlink is preferred) into a preamp or power amp ground loops matter...
