encryption question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note5

If i enable encryption under settings, will my device become slower to access everything on it? it will have to decrypt everything once unlocked right?

I just encrypted mine. I have not noticed a performance change. It does take longer to reboot.

When I had a Nexus 6, the only time I really noticed a performance dif is when I was adding/removing files to the phone. Read/write times took a pretty big hit...

I encrypted my phone almost as soon as it was done with its initial configuration (my standard practice) so I don't have much of a baseline for doing a before and after comparison. But it doesn't seem to me to have any perceivable performance hit. From many tests I've seen, Samsung devices in general seem to take less of a hit from encryption than other brands. That said, performance hit or not, my advice to anyone with the least bit of sensitive data on your phone: secure it in every way you can including encryption. I know too many people walking around with things like their bank accounts etc on their phones without even a pattern unlock. They are really just asking for it IMO.

There is a good YouTube video that features the Note 5 in a comparison, sorry I don't have a link. But because of the built-in hardware encryption there is no noticeable difference between the 2. He ran some benchmark tests and barely a difference. Went ahead and found the video: https://youtu.be/KSVhRKe6O9c

Android 5.0 Encrypt phone

So what does "Encrypt phone" do exactly
Did anyone enable this feature?
What are the downsides?
Same as in KK? It encrypts. Don't bother with it since it just causes issues, maybe not right away, but always eventually.
if you do it, itll upset the cia and nsa, as they wont be able to spy on you as easy
I haven't done it yet, but will later when I get a chance. I had 4.4.4 encrypted and had no issues. We'll see how this goes.

Encryption seems to work without issue. Have not done a lot of testing, but everything seems to work just fine

You should *ALWAYS* encrypt your phone, especially now that Android L has so many optimizations for full-disk encryption.
If you do not encrypt your phone, anyone with cursory knowledge of adb/fastboot/recovery can rip your data in minutes, maybe seconds.

From that post, I wouldn't say sarcastic tbh. He has a point with the full disk encryption and the fact that anyone with adb knowledge can indeed steal your data if your phone gets swiped.
Recoveries now have passwords to protect the ripping of data however, L will enforce encryption when.its officially released anyway.

[Q] Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 - Very slow - Please help

Hey
I just won a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 White 32gb last week, i've been playing around with it a bit and i've found that it is incredibly slow, slower than my ASUS Transformer TF300T. And i was expecting a monster of a machine with the specifications in the Note Pro.
There are delays in just navigating the menu, sliding down the menu thing from the top. Typing on the keyboard, i can write on word and keep writing and it freezes and then my last word pop up (sorry for bad explaining, hopefully you understand). Scrolling up and down on a website in Chrome, it can just freeze for a few secs. Opening some apps from me tapping the app to it opening can be delayed like 6-8 seconds or something. Also have slow problems when i'm using Perfect Viewer for reading comics, flipping a page can sometimes delay for seconds.
Never had any of these issues on my ASUS Transformers TF300T
Also have some issues with the pen when playing around in the Sketchbook Galaxy app, if i lift the pen away from the screen and then put it back, it doesnt identify the pen close to fast, it takes a long while.
I would be more pissed if i payed for it, still pretty bummed though even if i won it.
I will be super grateful for any help i can get
I made a video, but i cant link it here, maybe i can link it in a PM if somebody wants to help?
Hi, I have the same device and it screams, no delays at all...
What I have done from the start is install a new launcher, in my case Holo HD, to get rid of Touchwiz which supposedly consumes a lot of resources...
I suggest you give that a try...

No delays here either. All stock. Maybe something is downloading to cause that slowness. Look in upper left corner for moving arrows. If you see one moving then something is downloading and you can see what that is by swiping from the top of the screen.

Can't think of anything else, maybe you do have a hardware issue.
As a last resort you could perform a factory reset to see if that cures the responsiveness issues...

This guide should be all you need. http://forums.androidcentral.com/am...ide-samsung-how-flash-stock-rom-via-odin.html
You can download the firmware files at http://www.sammobile.com/firmware and enter SM-P900 in the search box. The file you want depends on your region. If from USA, then Cellular South is the one you want.
Please ask for assistance if you have more questions.

Should all the files be deleted after this re-flashing is done? If so, then i must have done it wrong, all my apps and everything is still there and it is still slow. I followed the guide and got the "PASS" in Odin.

Here's a video showing some of the slow issues i'm talking about
EDIT:
Has anyone heard of this problem with the Galaxy Note 12.2? Slow as f*** right out of the box? So infuriating
Seems like a collection of issues. First thing I'd do is get rid of the task killer application. IMO kit kat manages memory just fine. A better way to go is to use greenify to keep less frequently used applications hibernated so that frequently used ones will be cached. When I set up my devices after rooting I'll freeze things I'll never use and then I'll watch a system monitor application for things that load in the background. Anything that loads in the background that I don't want to use frequently (and don't need to keep alive for notifications) I'll consider for greenifying.
For the perfect viewer issue, where are the files? Is that memory latency? Kind of seems like it. Agree though, usually should run better than that.
I have to admit the first thing I thought was that perhaps you have a big SD card installed with a lot of media and the media server process is running and showing things down.
IMO in general out of the box these things are laggy but with some tweaks things improve a lot. The lag is subjective, some aren't bothered by it but for those of us who are it's a big nuisance.

The issues im having were present right out of the box, i installed the task killer to see if that would help, i dont have the task killer application anymore after i reset it again - still the same problems.
Is Android 4.4.2 the latest version available for Galaxy Note Pro 12.2?
Only other thing that could be the problem is hardware i suppose, but what kind of problem? that would make the device soooo slow.
You still need to do a factory reset after you reflash the stock rom with Odin.

S6 Lag is Driving Me NUTS (Video Demo Included)

For the past three weeks or so I was torn between the M9 and the S6 (G4 is too big for my tastes), but in the end I upgraded to the S6 on T-Mobile this past Saturday from my trusty M8, thinking that the reported RAM and lag issues were minor.
After installing everything I previously had on my M8, I've already started to experience the horrible performance issues others have experienced.
Reading these forums, it seems like many people don't believe the lag issue exists (because theirs doesn't lag), but I'm sure it's dependent on your own smartphone usage. I usually have BT on, connected to BT earphones, my Fitbit Flex, and occasionally a Moto 360. Google Play Music is almost always playing music.
A common use case for myself is this: when I go for a run, I put on my BT earphones, play my favourite playlist, and track my run in my Fitbit app. My M8 handled this scenario well, albeit with some minor stuttering, but overall it was highly usable.
Fast forward to my brand new S6. The same scenario CRIPPLES it.
Here's a video demonstration of what happens.
This is only one common use case among several, in which I've experienced terrible lag or force closures. How Samsung can get away with this is infuriating. It's also mind boggling how not a single media outlet experienced/reported this issue in their reviews.
At this point, I'm deeply considering exchanging this with the M9. Luckily, I'm still within my return window with T-Mobile. I'm incredibly disappointed, since otherwise this would have been a fantastic device.
By the way, I'm running stock T-Mobile, which is on 5.1.1.
Try clearing cache with cache cleaner app. Or flash 5.1.1 via odin.
Try installing the newest android system webview.
It's newer than the play store, once I installed, all my lag problems disappeared.

And then you are complaining there is lag?
Perhaps you could remove all of the stuff you loaded, then start from the beginning testing as you go to see what it is you loaded that caused the lag.
Just because you used it on the M8, doesn't mean it will function the same on the S6.
Making a bunch of changes and then discovering you are having issues makes it pretty hard to figure out what caused the issues.
Wow! If you had not posted the video, I wouldn't have believed it. Crazy lag.
Can anyone else replicate this lag dng the same as on video?I wonder if it's just your phone that's behaving this way....
Never had lag like this even when streaming music through Bluetooth and playing GBA emulators at the same time. And I'm still on 5.0.2. I suggest a factory reset. And then as you install apps, one at a time, see if certain ones are bogging down the device.

Funny, that is exactly what I expect. In fact, I expected it to perform even better because of the spec bump.
I don't actually have that many apps, and the apps that I do have are not many. I will try a factory reset later, but having to test this out one app at a time is incredibly time consuming and should not be necessary. I've never had such a problem with any of my previous devices. My Note 3 is actually running really well still.

That's actually offensive. I didn't spend over $800 on this phone so I can complain about it being laggy. I spent this amount because it was supposed to be the most powerful, and hence should not have this problem.
Constantly ending apps every time you want to use your phone for something is ridiculous. The phone should be able to manage this properly, like many other phones can. I can deal with slight lag or stuttering, but to be rendered completely unresponsive is unacceptable.
By the way, I just removed all apps and reran the same scenario, with the same result.
Sent from my SM-G920T using XDA Free mobile app
Honestly I never experienced this lag and im sure neither have 60% of the members here. Take it back to where you bought it and ask for a new one... you might of got a defective batch.
God damn this is hilarious... It has absolutely nothing to do with the phone but how many freaking apps you have open and running in the background, your battery life probably sucks balls too. Try Greenify from the play store and go look at the DHA Tweaks in the original development forum.
edit: if that doesn't work, your phones defective.
Obviously there's something wrong with your phone. No one's using their phone with this kind of lag, and just shrugs it off.
Get it replaced... Why make a thread just crying about it.
@djbutter okay I tested for myself using the fitbit app to track my run and streaming music from Google play music and there IS LAG. The fitbit app seems to use an ungodly amount of RAM on this phone when the fitbit tracking is going on and it will slow the phone to a crawl with the more apps you use/open. I've experienced no lag otherwise.
Sorry if my previous post came off as harsh. IMO this needs to be fixed by fitbit as the app uses too many resources on the S6.

This is actually great news, because it implies that it's app-specific, and I don't have a defective unit which others have suggested (not-so-politely). Thanks for testing it out.
I also feel like Google Play Music, Hangouts, and/or Bluetooth are messing with my phone's performance.
It's not that my phone is consistently lagging, it just seems to take a huge performance hit when I'm suddenly doing multiple things at once.

There are several threads about this already. Samsung really dropped the ball making the jump to arm64. Apps that shouldn't use much memory are, and Google apps are the biggest issue. I have had issues with Swiftkey since I got the S6, so much so that I've stopped using it. I get the impression you're not into rooting really, forgive me if I'm wrong, but there are bandaid solutions for some of these issues floating around. I've personally been messing with the memory management on this phone for months and while we haven't found a real fix, depending on your useage some of the things can help. Recently I realized the reason the phone comes to a screeching halt like you're showing is because the swap is full. Once the swap gets full it hammers performance. I've been making swap bigger which really seems to help in conjunction with other various tweaks. Like I said, no fix but definitely helps.

Why is the Shield Tablet so slow

I initially bought this tablet early 2015 (or late 2014, can't really remember). I had watched many videos and read many reviews that agreed with its 'ultimate tablet for gamers' branding. When it is loaded up inside a game the Tegra K1 really shines, and it delivers amazing gaming performance. Outside of games, for me anyway it is ridiculously slow. I have had this issue since day one on android 4.x.x. I patiently waited for updates hoping they would fix my problems but they never did. Many months of waiting and 2 full android releases later, I have decided to post. This tablet =, when it feels like it is a very snappy device. However 99% of the time it doesn't 'feel like it'. often just turning on the display when the device is locked takes multiple attempts and takes a good 10-15 seconds. Then I have to wait for the home screen to load in. First the status bar and wall paper. Then the Icons pop up a few seconds later. For the first few seconds navigating the home screen is near impossible with it lagging so much. It speeds up after a random amount of time. Then for example I go to open chrome. It once again slows right down and it takes a good 20 seconds for chrome to fully load. Then when I try to type something the keyboard lags. (Much in the same way as my iPhone 4s on iOS 9). It sometimes speeds back up but it is never 'fast'. Youtube is a strange one. Often it works fine other times even 480p video skips and lags. My internet is 150MBPS so it isn't that (And i can watch 4k youtube on my PC just fine). Sometimes the device just straight refuses to do anything and the only option is a hard reset. I have had two tablets now (Recall) and both behave the exact same way. That makes me think it must be much more widespread than just me. I have tried everything. Reflashing, Custom ROMS, flashing older versions. Does anyone have anything that may help me. Im half considering dumping the thing and picking up a second hand iPad which ideally I don't want to do. Anyway, sorry for the long post and thank you in advance.

Yes, I've heard about MM, which is rather a downgrade in terms of performance. Thus I stick with Lollipop.
I'm not an expert but you certainly can change back to Lollipop. All you'd need is an image of stock lollipop and some tools.
XDA should have all the tools.

Just got the K1 (brand new) and it came with 6.0.1 installed - only the July security update was pending installation.
All setup and running super quick...
Not sure what's up with yours?
I did read when upgrading from LP to MM you should do a Factory Reset after else it lags like hell. Tried that?
Also - as with all Android new installs - don't "restore settings" when setting up. It seems to slow the device down massively. Had the same issue with my Nexus 5x. Setup as brand new, no importing, and it flies.
Because its crap? These Nvidia CPU's are pants compared to Qualcomm. They overheat without you actually doing anything with them, stall regularly just because you dared to lift up the device, and generally run slow. Benchmarks may suggest otherwise, but benchmarks are real life usage.

So there doesn't seem to be many roms for your device
But I would recommend
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-a/development/rom-20190123-t3892802
As I used it for a year and had no problems with it
and also it has incredible customizability

Hello!
I Would like to try various ROMs, but cant make my mind up!
Quite hesitated as concerned about the impact it might have on reducing memory (RAM) lifespan.
Samsung T580 (2016 version). I think 16GB, supposed to be 32, but appears 'they' lied!
I'm probably going to keep it for a long time as too expensive for me, so not a matter of changing a couple of years down the road. (probably not) .
Thanks in advance.
David.

It is true that solid state storage deteriorates over time after many, many times writing and overwriting, but you have nothing to worry about. You would have to flash your device 1000 times or more before it starts degrading your memory.

Wow thanks! Wish I'd know that on my TAB7 I endured the sluggishness for about a year... before I split coffee and blew the USB charging circuit that is!

Did you have issue with video rendering (static), but sound is okay!? I read it's after deep sleep which seems to be the case. Makes me think it's some soft of video related rendering codec . Codecs don't seem to like anything and often crash regular PC's. Not overly bothered becuase Video quality have never been SM-Txxx priority it seems. Just handy for quick movies of squirrels etc. Works flawless on official ROM (maybe a Samsung conspiracy secret!)... Some codecs are patented too, but maybe I'm getting a little too deep for a Sunday afternoon!

Sorry, the answer to the video problem is right at the top of the ROM description!
