Z5 mms question. - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I wanted to ask if anyone has a had any issues with the Z5 when it comes to MMs. I use to have the Z1 and then upgraded to the Z3 and both of those phones had issues when it came to sending or receiving MMs texts. Sometimes the MMs would take literally days to arrive, or would not come at all and would make group chats impossible. Im now thinking of upgrading to the Z5 and i wanted to know if these problems still persist. Because if they do then it is a deal breaker and ill opt. for the S7 Edge instead. Thank you.

Hi, I recently upgraded my Z5 with MM on it and it runs MM fluently with no problem. You can flash it without concerning the texting problem^

Don't think mms issues are your phone, this would seem to me to be a mobile provider issue, I have also had text messages get delayed from time to time, and it doesn't just happen on Sony phones

Calls dropped when EDGE data is present? WTF

So I switched from a blackberry to a Nexus S and I've been using the phone for about 3 months. During that time people have told me they can't get through to me so I did some research and found that once data useage over EDGE is present, calls won't come through? That is absurd to me as calls are far more important than loading a webpage.
I have found nothing to cure this as it seems that unless you have 3G then the smartphone on EDGE is pointless. I did some testing with my blackberry and it seems that since it's such a crappy device for browsing etc. the EDGE does not stay connected long enough to send the call to voicemail, as it is only active for a few seconds to receive or send an IM or email etc.
There is no 3G in Grenada where I am from and this issue is making me regret buying the Nexus S. It's a wonderful device but if it can't receive calls all the time then it's a brick to me.
Is there any workaround to this issue which gives priority to receiving calls over completing a data task?

What ROM? Kernel? Radio?
The phone is not rooted, running the 2.3.2 version, the OTA update to 2.3.3 has not presented itself as yet.

dont get your hopes up. OTA for that ROM is pretty slow, you can manually update it by going to the 2.3.3 links thread in this section. no need to root to update, this update will supply you with a new baseband that will help
Are you aware of the issue I am speaking about? Where the phone does not receive phone calls when an EDGE data conenction is present? From my research it happens to a lot of smartphones where EDGE/GPRS is used even the iPhone, since the radio is shared for EDGE data use and GSM calls.
How do you know the new baseband will help to resolve the issue? In what way?
Thanks for your responses so far.

Because 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 includes a new baseband (radio) update and various bug fixes.
It could be a bug that is fixed in 2.3.3... hence, the new radio/baseband update. (Duh!)
It's pretty obvious you don't know what a baseband is. It's the thing thats responsible for your phone's reception/3G/EDGE/etc signal. So yes, I'm aware of what you're talking about but you're not aware about what I'm talking about.
Not being arrogant or anything but I shouldn't of even responded back to you because you responded pretty rudely to me.
To be honest I didn't mean to sound rude in any way. I sincerely apologize if you took it that way and appreciate your response. The reason I asked is because you did not speak to the issue I was trying to address about the EDGE/GSM not working when the other is working, and I was hoping to hear your thoughts on it.

I did speak to you about the issue. The possible fix would be upgrading to 2.3.3 which would provide you with the newest and latest radio (baseband). The newest baseband includes significant signal improvements and it could fix your problem (big chance it would).
Is this a hardware limitation of sharing the same chip for phone/data or can it also be fixed by software?

its just 'his' problem.. i don't have any problems with calling on EDGE, internet doesnt affect your calls unless you're using WiFi VoIP (or anything related)
It's widely known that on edge, when data is actively transmitted, calls will get kicked right to voice mail. Not much you can do about it.
I upgraded to 2.3.3 last night as suggested and did some testing. When I would load a webpage, while loading EDGE would be lit green and the up and down arrows will be lit showing EDGE activity, I called the phone about 5 times during this process and no call would go through. As soon as the webpage was done loading and the EDGE arrows stopped blinking, the call came through. Tried this multiple times with different apps that use EDGE and while syncing or refreshing such as the Facebook app, no calls would come through once EDGE data was in use.
I did some research and it seems that's just how EDGE works, it gives preference to the data connection and calls get bumped to voicemail once the data connection is active on the device at the time. I know both data and voice can't work at the same time but I was hoping that it would register the call coming in and bump the data off, receive the call, and resume data after, but it doesn't.
Thanks for your help guys, and for the confirmation RogerPodacter, my research indicated such.

MMS over WiFi?

I'm wondering if this is a problem across the board. Lately in have been running a few different ROMs. Hyperdrive, moar and the most recent moar 5.0.1. I have noticed that my MMS won't go through while I am on WiFi. I don't know if this has been a problem for a while and I haven't noticed it. I really like the app textra, and unjust started using it the other day. I thought that was the issue. Uninstalled it and I am still having the problem.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

I really hope someone has a cure for this because it has been driving me insane. I shouldn't have to turn off wifi every time I want to send an mms to someone!
I'm on MOAR 5.0 v13

I'm thinking it's a rom issue because I just wiped my phone and installed cyanogenmod and I can send and receive mms messages over wifi without any trouble
are u using a network extender by chance when your on WiFi?

I always thought it was a network thing. I thought they required you to send and receive MMS through the cell towers because they're stored at Verizon servers before being passed along to the recipient. I had the same issue on my LG Ally, haven't tried MMS over WiFi on my gs3, but now I'm curious.

No, I'm not using a network extender. Interesting thing tho. MMS will not go thru at all on MOAR or Hyperdrive. I flashed bonestock 3.1 and when I send an MMS over wifi, the 4G turns on (so now the wifi icon and 4G are on) and it will send the MMS.......hmmmmmm
MMS / SMS are both sent over data networks, as this is the only way VZW can count how many you send, thus being able to bill those who do not have unlimited text messages. (this came from a VZW rep when i called in to get a work order on my phone, as mine wouldn't work)
When the S3 first came out, there was an issue with the devices as a whole, fully stock and unrooted, having problems sending text messages when the phone was on WIFI. The process is, when you hit send, it will shut off your WIFI, switch to data, send message, and then switch back to WIFI without you noticing it.
however, in the beginning, there was an issue with the phone doing this. AND this was even before rooting the phone. VZW and Samsung had to do a fix for their radios to get the phone to work correctly.
so what you are probably seeing, is an issue with that switching, not that the message won't go over WIFI, cuz unless these DEVs have figured out how to make messages go over internet instead of data network, then the issue is a ROM issue with the switch.
hope that makes sense...

Unfortunately, this is the answer that is most often given, but not very helpful (no offense). I think the majority of people with the issue at this point understand that MMS is sent via data networks by design, the problem is, it is not functioning properly. It is NOT shutting off the WiFi, therefore it is not sending at all. I've had different periods of success, where it'll work for a week, then back to the same ****. I've never rooted my phone, so it's a stock ROM issue that still remains.
always had issues sending MMS messages on roms other than stock when I was at home with my network extender...I kept messing with the APN settings last night... I changed the other thing to GSM and tried to connect to at & t towers.. after it failed only then it would have multiple choices of APN settings ..I have all the roaming options checked and the LTE/CDMA is checked...I've been able to send MMS messages with no problem now.

Just an update I'm on liquid smooth 4.2.2 and it automatically turns network data on if I have it off in order to receive/send mms. This is what I was looking for.

[Q] Delayed Text Messages on 3G

Hey guys,
Been with Sprint for awhile now, and I don't recall noticing this before. But so long as I am on 3G and NOT LTE, then all my incoming texts are delayed by at the very least 5 minutes. Sometimes even up to 20 minutes.
I am running MOAR ROM, Lollipop. My initial question is if anyone running stock has this issue? If not, I will return to stock and check it out to see if maybe its my account. I remember before I had a similar issue with T-Mobile, and they had to re-add my phone back to their network. I'm trying to dial down the issue and see if it is something I can fix or if I need to travel to sprint's store.
Thanks all.
Seriously? Nobody running stock can say "I get texts fine on 3g" or "I'm running stock and have delayed messages too". Wow.

Similar network issues on z5 as the z3 dual??

Hey everyone I had purchased an xperia z3 dual about a year ago and been using it on AT&T ever since. When I first received my z3 I was not getting calls and/or messages when I was connected on LTE. I would have to turn my LTE off to receive calls and messages consistently.
I was curious to know if anyone with the Z5 dual on AT&T has experienced these issues??
If anyone is not aware of this i have attached a previous XDA link stating the issues. It was not just with the Dual Z3.

I had no LTE connection at all when I first set my E6653 up on AT&T. Had to call them and give them the IMEI of one of my old AT&T LTE devices. The IMEI of my Z5 was showing up as a Sony P900.

Okay, but have you had issues receiving calls and/or texts after you did that? I do not want to spend another 600-700 bucks if I'm going to continue to have the same issues as I do on my z3.

None and I tested thoroughly. I use my phone for work so can't afford to miss communications.

Problems with sending and receiving messages

Yesterday I had some trouble with sending messages, usually they would be send within 2 seconds but it took more than 30 seconds. Today same problem and later today I didn't receive any messages while the other person did send them..
What can be the problem?
After restarting my phone yesterday, the problem was fixed but today the problem started again.
I wish I could tell you. I just took a $50. loss to return our Honor 8. Text messaging was too unreliable--costly (missing out on important communication) too. It was using the same service as our other phones (the same sim in other phones had no issues). We're in US using AT&T. I can only assume there's a radio glitch when experiencing a weak signal although I didn't bother to check signal strength at the time of each failed text. We seem to be the only 2 having the issue.

Did you just update to Nougat?
Don't use the default messaging app if you are experiencing this. Use alternatives like Textra or pulse, that is the only way to fix your SMS problems apparently. If you also have MMS problems too, these messaging apps will fix it too.

In my case, not upgraded to nougat. This was my son's phone, and he thinks (I agree) that the basic texting should work. I just wish he'd gotten po'd with the phone before return deadline on Jan 31. At least Discover card appears to be honoring the 90 day guaranteed return benefit. They won't refund the sales tax or pay shipping.
