Calls dropped when EDGE data is present? WTF - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I switched from a blackberry to a Nexus S and I've been using the phone for about 3 months. During that time people have told me they can't get through to me so I did some research and found that once data useage over EDGE is present, calls won't come through? That is absurd to me as calls are far more important than loading a webpage.
I have found nothing to cure this as it seems that unless you have 3G then the smartphone on EDGE is pointless. I did some testing with my blackberry and it seems that since it's such a crappy device for browsing etc. the EDGE does not stay connected long enough to send the call to voicemail, as it is only active for a few seconds to receive or send an IM or email etc.
There is no 3G in Grenada where I am from and this issue is making me regret buying the Nexus S. It's a wonderful device but if it can't receive calls all the time then it's a brick to me.
Is there any workaround to this issue which gives priority to receiving calls over completing a data task?

What ROM? Kernel? Radio?

The phone is not rooted, running the 2.3.2 version, the OTA update to 2.3.3 has not presented itself as yet.

dont get your hopes up. OTA for that ROM is pretty slow, you can manually update it by going to the 2.3.3 links thread in this section. no need to root to update, this update will supply you with a new baseband that will help

Are you aware of the issue I am speaking about? Where the phone does not receive phone calls when an EDGE data conenction is present? From my research it happens to a lot of smartphones where EDGE/GPRS is used even the iPhone, since the radio is shared for EDGE data use and GSM calls.
How do you know the new baseband will help to resolve the issue? In what way?
Thanks for your responses so far.

Because 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 includes a new baseband (radio) update and various bug fixes.
It could be a bug that is fixed in 2.3.3... hence, the new radio/baseband update. (Duh!)
It's pretty obvious you don't know what a baseband is. It's the thing thats responsible for your phone's reception/3G/EDGE/etc signal. So yes, I'm aware of what you're talking about but you're not aware about what I'm talking about.
Not being arrogant or anything but I shouldn't of even responded back to you because you responded pretty rudely to me.

To be honest I didn't mean to sound rude in any way. I sincerely apologize if you took it that way and appreciate your response. The reason I asked is because you did not speak to the issue I was trying to address about the EDGE/GSM not working when the other is working, and I was hoping to hear your thoughts on it.

I did speak to you about the issue. The possible fix would be upgrading to 2.3.3 which would provide you with the newest and latest radio (baseband). The newest baseband includes significant signal improvements and it could fix your problem (big chance it would).

Is this a hardware limitation of sharing the same chip for phone/data or can it also be fixed by software?

its just 'his' problem.. i don't have any problems with calling on EDGE, internet doesnt affect your calls unless you're using WiFi VoIP (or anything related)

It's widely known that on edge, when data is actively transmitted, calls will get kicked right to voice mail. Not much you can do about it.

I upgraded to 2.3.3 last night as suggested and did some testing. When I would load a webpage, while loading EDGE would be lit green and the up and down arrows will be lit showing EDGE activity, I called the phone about 5 times during this process and no call would go through. As soon as the webpage was done loading and the EDGE arrows stopped blinking, the call came through. Tried this multiple times with different apps that use EDGE and while syncing or refreshing such as the Facebook app, no calls would come through once EDGE data was in use.
I did some research and it seems that's just how EDGE works, it gives preference to the data connection and calls get bumped to voicemail once the data connection is active on the device at the time. I know both data and voice can't work at the same time but I was hoping that it would register the call coming in and bump the data off, receive the call, and resume data after, but it doesn't.
Thanks for your help guys, and for the confirmation RogerPodacter, my research indicated such.

[fixed] Internet problem on sensation?

Hi,
To be clear: Internet is not the app, not over Wifi but over 4G/3G/H etc..
I got my sensation 3 days now and there seems to be a issue with the internet connection.
Mine keeps requesting data but it doesnt get any data back.
Apps like internet browser sometimes work and sometimes they dont (loading google), the weather app says there is no internet connection and manage to sometimes get the actual weather.
I tried restarting it serval times but no success..
Internet does work on my HTC Hero.
Edit:
Found the problem, had to enable data roaming..
Odd thing that it works sometimes without roaming tho..
4G internet issues
I am having the same problem with my internet, though enabling data roaming did not correct my problem. Internet and web based apps work fine over WIFI, but will randomly work over 4G. Is anyone else having a similar issue?

I get a severe lag now and then when connected to 4G - seems to take a while for the connection to initiate. I've tried the "fix" posted in another thread, but that only seemed to resolve the issue temporarily.
It seems like location may have something to do with it as well. The tower closest to my home is where I experience the most issues. Though my G2X or my fiance's vibrant work without any issues.

That could contribute to my issue. I seem to live near a cell dead zone.
Theres a few threads open on this issue. There doesnt seem to be a permanent fix yet, but it is extremely annoying.
Same here, my connection would send data but winter recieve sometimes. Kinda annoying. Hopefully, htc addresses this problem soon.

Same issue - across multiple handsets
Hi, it's been a while since I posted in XDA but this issue has been a regular one with my T-mobile service, across multiple devices. I have searched far and wide for anyone else seeing this exact problem, and finally here you are. I hope this helps other users:
1) Purchased the original myTouch 3G; approx 1 year with zero connectivity issues. Loved it, exceptional for its time.
2) Purchased (upgrade) myTouch 3G Slide at launch. Following 3-5 months saw This issue with outgoing data, but no incoming response. 60/40 the internet would respond or not in any application (web, streaming, podcasts), it was a real crapshoot. Assumed the problem was isolated and performed a few master resets. Zero apps installed and continued to see the same issue. Decided it was either software or radio related and called T-mo for advice. They suggested a replacement unit after standard troubleshooting (re-seat SIM, master reset, check that you have substantial signal).
3) New MT3G Slide, same outcome. Called back. Finally received a reasonable suggestion: get a new (free) SIM from T-mo as the one I currently had was slightly older. Was sure this was the issue as the rep sounded very confident when I explained the situation. Received new SIM!
4) No change, issue persisted. Following day called T-mo and had a 'ticket' escalated to engineering dept. Was assured I would receive a call from eng. dept, but no such luck. Bothered by this whole mess and lacking in answers from T-mo, I sold the Slide and upgraded to the G2X.
5) The issue once again reared its head! If the stars were aligned and I did get In/Out data, it was 11KB/s (90kbps) tops. Ex: 5MB podcast would take 0.5-1.5 min (30-90 sec) to download prior to issue, now 10-15 min. This was with no apps installed, 4 bars of signal, 4G status icon, across multiple geographical locations, and fingers on both hands crossed. It was about this time I suspected that somehow T-mo's network was throttling my account. But, I had never used more than 1GB in a month, and they assured me I was not being throttled. A serious WTF was had
6) Realizing there were bigger problems in the world and finally at wit's end, I returned the G2X and am waiting patiently for my contract to expire in July, while using an old Nokia candybar in the meantime for calls and text only.
7) July: move to new carrier or stay with T-mo (if we can figure out what this issue is). 8 year customer, need internet on a smartphone though.

I am having the same issue, and have gone through the same steps. New Sensation (exchnaged mine twice now) followed by new SIM, tried the *fix* posted, turned on data roaming, and still nothing. I have talked to Tmo several times, and they are supposed to be checking the towers in my area, an engineer is supposed to contact me in up to 72 hours. The Evo 3D comes out before my 14 day return period, so I may just jump ship if this problem persists. Hoping to find a fix though, as this phone is amazing when it's on Wifi

Wifi Calling - Crackle?

I searched everywhere and haven't seen any reports on this.
Does anyone else have serious call quality problems, only when using WIFI calling on T-Mobile? I get a terrible crackle/static fairly often.
I thought at first it was the built-in earpiece but I don't have this problem as soon as I switch off WIFI calling (and call over the 3G network).
What I also thought was interesting, is that when in WIFI calling... I can use my bluetooth headset or speakerphone and have zero interference/cracking sounds.
Let me know if you have any tricks, or if I should get this thing repaired by HTC! Thanks
WiFi Calling Crackling
I'm having the same issues with WiFi calling. I experienced a couple times and thought it might just be a bad connection, but apparently it's more than that. Hopefully the MR update (whenever that is) will address this
Yeah I don't think swapping the handset is going to help this one, hopefully an update comes out soon to address the WIFI calls. And hopefully Skype comes out with one too, because its static as all hell too.
I have the same issue. It was delayed as well. Odd.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
I am also having that experience with Skype calls and really bad with video calls and GTA 3. Could it be beats integration?
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
Don't think the beats affect calls since its coming through the earpiece. Guess we're going to need some software updates. T-Mobile mentioned there will be an update to address Wifi Calling battery life, maybe they'll sneak a fix in. I've reported it to T-Mo and HTC... You guys should too.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the phone, minus the pain in the butt power button! Its so flush with the case, it is difficult to press.
yea i also heard about a update rolling out looking forward to it
+1
Getting a slight / medium crackle during conversations on wifi. Crystal clear on GSM.
I get the crackle too, any word on a fix?
Just a reply to say I have the same issue on two One S phones from tmobile. I had to set wifi calling to use cell when available, as opposed to using wifi when available. The crackle was so "sharp" and pronounced that I was about to return my phones because it really sounds like a hardware issue/loose speaker parts in the earpiece! Thankfully, it works great with GSM, so it seems to be software only. And, if I need wifi calling in a pinch, I'm willing to put up with the crackles. If I had to rely on it (due to low signal in my house), it would be very frustrating.
Also on wifi calling sometimes callers could not hear me, or I them. That only happened a couple of times to me, but was a major reason I demoted wifi calling.
By the way, this phone is absolutely amazing! Fast, fast, fast, great screen, great battery, great metal shell... would love to remove Sense because it buries all the Google App integration and favors everything else, but that's a personal opinion.
Skeeboe
Yeah the feel and speed of this phone are just incredible. It just seems like there is some software kinks that need to be worked out.
Another one I've run into recently is YouTube links directing me to the mobile site rather than the native app (which is another problem with the 3 dot menu lol).
I hope they don't rush the first update and work to address some of these quirks.
Yea, I had the crackle issue on my first handset (kept having it randomly reboot) but haven't tried on the new handset since it seems they now have to enable the wifi calling feature on the account and my account is to old to enable it...or so they claim.
Wait so is the wifi calling crackle you t-mobile guys in the States get the same as the crackle I get when using Skype on my One S in the UK?
US t-mobile here. skype's crackle is much worse, impossible to deal with. wi-fi crackle is sporadic and annoying.
I'm completely confused about the whole crackle thing now. I've seen and read about your US T-mobile wifi calling which I now understand and skype crackles a heck of a lot for me. So I assumed that it was a VOIP calling problem but I used Viber to call someone over wifi last night and there was no crackle at all on a 30 minute call. Oh well I won't complain about that, would be nice if skype was working for video calls though
I am experiencing the same issue with WiFi calling too, which is a pain because I primarily make my calls over WiFi. It was so bad on a conference call today I had to switch phones. Anyone know if this is a known issue for T-Mo yet, don't want to call into care if they are already aware of it. Also, out of curiosity does anyone know if this was an issue before the most recent firmware update?
Thanks!
it's hard to say if T-Mo knows about it but they didn't acknowledge anything regarding this issue, only the battery drain related to wi-fi calling. all T-Mo US HTC One's suffer from it.
I have reported it twice to TMO, first time I was told they didn't know about it. The second time a few days later, they were aware of the issue but couldn't tell me if/when they were going to push an update out for the crackle issue. If I were u guys I would report it so they may push something quicker rather than having horrible comments about their flagship ICS device!
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
Just purchased an HTC One S today.
I talked with T-mobile earlier today and showed them the link to the t-mobile support forum thread created for the Wifi calling quality issues (crackling/delay) on the HTC One S.
They told me that they are aware of the problem and it's a known issue. I didn't press them for a timetable to fix it or anything.
Everyone who's experiencing wifi calling issues should at least take a moment to call in to tech support or chat with a t-mobile tech rep.
We need to make sure they address this quickly. I know a lot of people rely on wifi calling on t-mobile in spotty/bad signal areas. I sure do.

Virtually no SMS or calls when wifi connected

Since yesterday morning I receive very few SMSs or calls when wifi is connected.
I installed 4.4.4 a few days before that so I doubt it's that (although I supposed it's possible)
I've reflashed the radio, reflashed 4.4.4 in its entirety, flashed CM11 - all with the same result - when wifi's connected I hardly ever receive any calls or SMSs (no problems dialing out or sending)
Unless anyone else has similar problems I don't think it's worth going back to 4.4.3.
So now I'm left wondering if it's the hardware or the SIM, or...?

Yes, I can dial out and send SMSs.
When someone calls you what signal do they get? And their messages stay "pending"?

They either get a ringing tone a few times at their end end then an unavailable tone, or just an unavailable tone / message.
The messages eventually arrive, maybe 6-10 hours later, or when I switch wifi off.

Weird - I had already read up on that (it seemed to be a pre 4.4.3 problem) and could swear I had already tried switching it without success but now I've switched again it seems to have done the trick - I'm just waiting to get some test SMSs sent. :good:
I wonder why it worked okay until yesterday morning and then just suddenly stopped working - it would suck if I'd paid for 4G!
I suppose it's of some comfort that I'm not the only one on 4.4.4 with this problem...

I've tried it again - back to not receiving calls or SMSs even with 4G turned off unless I'm disconnected from wifi.
A few minutes on the phone to Google - and they're sending me a new phone! :victory:
This is a long standing issue with the N5. A solution that worked for me is to disable keeping WIFI on during sleep. Not sure if that will work for everybody though.

How did that conversation go? When I bought my phone, it took something like 2 hours for it to download the required sprint activation package (I think it was something like 50mb)...And the radio has been giving me grief ever since day 1 with signal constantly dropping any/everywhere...I just thought it was more related to Sprints crummy service in my area though.

Randomly missing calls and texts. Help please

So the title pretty much sums it up. I have a rooted sprint nexus 5 running stock 5.0.1. And I'm a still randomly missing calls and texts. Phone doesn't ring. Missed texts and missed call notifications don't appear until rebooting the phone.
I know this was a problem with 4.4 on the nexus 5 but I thought 5.0 was supposed to fix this. Am I do in something wrong? Help would be much appreciated.
Check your network
I'm having the same problem
I have had a Nexus 5 for the last year. It was a great phone but did miss some calls, but had good reception. I recently broke that phone and purchased a newer one. The reception is awful. I had to buy a microcell booster just to work it in my home where I didn't have to before. If the phone has one bar you can't receive or send calls. If it has two bars it's a crap shoot. Often times when I call there will be two bars and as soon as I press send to call someone the phone drops to no bars. Is this a software or phone or hardware problem?
My issue seems to be receiving texts and calls while on wifi. If so, I will get texts really late, or out of order. With phone calls i just may note receive them at all, nor get a missed call or voicemail notification. I've heard some peopl say that the issue an LTE one and switching to 3G helps the problem but I've found that recently that is not the case. If I am on wifi my sprint nexus 5 just cant seem to get it right...
For Sprint, there could be issues with the signaling for voice/sms when on LTE since the N5 is a single radio for everything. Another thing it could be is the modem version. Also if you got a replacement it's possible the connections are just loose inside or one of them is disconnected for the antenna.
I'm on sprint too and I get the notorious double texts has to be something on sprints end
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Sorry to necropost, but i'm reviving this to see if anyone else is still having the same problem??? Has this been fixed on Android 5.1 or 5.1.1 ? There has to be a better solution than having to be on 3G and keeping wifi on only when phone is awake. Help or advanced knowledge of the problem would be appreciated.
Its Sprint, it sucks

Verizon S10e no longer works on Verizon after outage? Works on Mint sim (Tmobile) no problem.

Hi,
Suddenly on Tuesday when Verizon had the outage in NY my phone started not being able to make calls, data didn't work and visual voicemail stopped working completely but texts worked intermittently. I spent hours resetting my phone network, clearing cache and got no where. Intermittently I could make calls over wifi. I noticed my signal kept going from signal to no signal at all? After several more days of verizon support and engineers visual voicemail started working for new voicemails bit old ones were grayed out. Then today after switching to a new 5g simcard and 4.5 more hours they gave up and said my phone is under warranty and they are sending a new one (assumed refurbished). The odd thing is texts still work over wifi but no data or calls? I also have a Verizon network extender.
Any idea what in the world is going on? Is it Verizon that caused this or my radio in the phone?
Would it be better to send my phone to Samsung for repair or keep the assumed refurbished one from Verizon as my original warranty didn't end until November 2023?
I tried looking around for others with this issue. Is it causation or coincidence this happened during an outage?
Maybe this has something to do with it?

Since you mentioned that your phone's signal was intermittently going from signal to no signal at all, it suggests that there may have been disruptions in the network coverage or connectivity in your area during the outage. This could explain why you were unable to make calls or use data on your phone.

I thought the same thing at first but then the other lines I have all iphones had no issue after Tuesday somehow. It seems to be something on their end though as how could some voicemails be locked and other not?
