Here's how to configure adoptable storage on your S7 / S7 Edge without root - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Di

Just saw the news that Modaco has released a guide on how to use ADB to enable your S7 adaptable storage! And no root required, so Samsung Pay and future Samsung update will work as intended!
Can wait to go home and try it.
http://www.modaco.com/news/android/...e-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/

Seems to have worked for me. Thanks for sharing.

For those who have done this... has your phone slowed down? What card are you using?
Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk

Might need to be using this when I get my phone... whenever that will be.

Has anyone done this yet?

Any feedback guys who have done this? Please provide what card you used so we know.
I'm tempted to do this i have a decent card samsung 64gb pro

I tried, and instead of coming up with the initial result his did when he ran the sm list-disks command of "disks 179/160", came up with "disks 179/0". I use a 128 evo as well, and it was in debugging mode and had accepted my computer, etc. I ran every deviant I could think of and it changed nothing.

I used an Evo plus 128gb and worked like a charm.

What's the purpose of Adoptable Storage? Does it basically turn the memory into one giant "partition?"
Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk

I tried this and never got it to work. Kept showing 179:0 like it wasn't seeing my sd card.

I have a 128gb Lexar high speed MicroSD i picked up from Amazon and i've had zero slow downs. I believe the SD Transfer rate is around 95mb/s so there should be zero issues with it. I did a 50/50 partition according to the guide.
Should note though - some guy says in the comments on MoDaCo's site that you can just download a terminal app and enter the commands directly. well, he's not correct. You can if you have root. Since i actually use Samsung Pay, i am not going to root this device. You need to use ADB as it states clearly in the instructions. That will work fine.
Just FYI.

Amended to say I tried just skipping to the next step, regardless of the 0, and it worked And no slow down so far

I got the same thing. Use a comma instead of the colon.

I'm frankly afraid to do that. When I ordered the phone I also ponied up for a Lexar 1800x (u3/UHS-II) 64GB card. It's expensive and really fast. It tests out in the supplied usb 3 reader on my windows pc at 175+ MB/s write speeds and somewhere in the 90's on read using winsat.
In the phone read is 68 write is 54, which I guess is telling me the sd card reader in this phone is very slow?
The internal memory tests out at 275/93
When I move apps to the sd card the boot process of the phone takes several minutes with multiple errors that all seem to be related to the incredibly slow read speeds of the sd reader. Once it's booted up it's good enough, but I don't know how adoptable storage would affect this. I guess this is probably why it's not enabled. I want to wring the necks of everyone that complained loudly that slow ad-on storage was somehow better than fast built in storage in the 6. I really would have preferred a usb c port and 128GB of internal ram to the sd reader.
Maybe someone can tell me if there's something I can do to speed the card up? Are other people seeing these kind of slow card speeds in test apps? I'm using Disk Speed Test.

I'm tempted to do this too, I just got a Samsung 128GB Pro+ which should be no problem, I might try it once I ran out of space (SOON).

Alright, I finally got a chance to format my Samsung EVO 32GB card. I followed the instruction from my original post. The only hiccup is that my SD card showed as 179,0 but I don't have any issue formating with that info.
I restarted my phone several times and I don't notice any slow down, boot issues, or slower boot up time. I haven't bother to retest my system, but I'm pretty sure the phone is slower with adaptive storage (and my card isn't the fastest out there). As for real world experience-wise, I don't feel the phone is any slower than before.
The key thing is that once you formatted SD card, make sure you go to Settings > Storage > SD card > More. Select Migrate your data. That will move your photos, music, sounds...etc to your external storage right away. Oh, and it seems like the default app storage is still internal memory. So, I have to move the app after any new app install.
Now, there are 2 issues/concerns I have. First, the total internal/external capacity that being displayed by the system is kinda of funky. I don't think the info is correct. And when you mount your phone to Windows/Mac, the external storage isn't displayed while the total storage isn't accurate either.
Second, I understand that I can't move pre-installed apps/system apps to external storage. But I'm not sure why certain user installed apps can't be move to external storage.

There appears to be an issue with your read/write speeds. Here's my test on the S7 Edge from T-Mobile. This is a Samsung 32GB card. But notice that even your built in storage is considerably slower...

OK, so one important point that "Recent Test" is not of your SD card it's of the virtual sd card that is built into the phone. So it's a test of the internal memory. To test the sd card, you have to click that red button, not the blue one. The Yellow and Green buttons both do the internal memory, just using different folder paths to the same physical storage space.
As to the faster write speeds, the tests will vary depending on what the phone is up to, and I think my result is probably slower because your storage has about 5 more gigs free. This is one of the things that made me slap my head when they announced 32 GB max in the US. As storage fills up, it slows down. 32 may be enough to squeeze most apps into, but having the ability to leave another 32 free makes things way more efficient.

How to move programs to SD card not internal Memory?

Dumped my buggy not impressive Galaxy s 4g today> (love Costcos 3 months policy) and picked up G2x. So far extremally impressed!
One question is the Costco phone guy handed my the 16gig micro SD card from the Galaxy as he said he had extras from dead phones. I said THANK YOU! and installed. However when using AppstoSd program it only see's internal mem, and Internal SD 5gs. It does not see or give option to move to my 16g Sd card?
My HD2 and Samsung worked great with AppstoSD. Am I missing something? I mean I guess the 1.2gig and 5gigs of internal is enough. But I like to also use the SD card for programs to not overload internal memory.
I have not rooted yet, will do that so I can get my Titanium backup working to see it I can do it with that.
Thanks!

First thank you for responding. I am not a newbie but have been rooting and testing my Hd2's for past year. My first non HTC phone in awhile was the vibrant s4g, it had its own problems with very low internal memory.
So I was excited this phone had 8 gigs plus now my 16 gig card. I have not been on these forums so I did not know it was a known issue Sorry.
So to clarify, there is no workaroud? But can I not just use root explorer and move files to the SD card? I understand apps to sd wont do it automaticly. But I plan to put my music and movies at least on SD... What would even be the use of the manufacturer putting SD slot on phone if you could not use it?
Ira that is what I do. SD card = sdcard/external_SD
Or something to that effect. I plan to keep my apps2sd on internal and SD for straight storage and backups.
From the sound of it, the clockwork mod can access the microsd so at least backups will be off the device.

What I have been doing is the basic copy and paste. I copy the app or video ect. from the sd card and paste it on the ext/sd card. If there is a faster oor easier way please let me know. I am rooted and this is the first phone I ever had with this kind of a set up with the sd card. I prefer the other way much better ala Nexus One.

That is correct. In a file manager etc. you can locate your SD Card by going to the ExternalSD folder (path: SD Card/ExternalSD). The "SD Card" is actually the internal memory, and the "External SD" is the actual SD Card. When you plug your phone into a PC two different drives come up, one for the internal and one for the SD Card. From what I know you can't put apps on your actual SD Card. However music, pics, etc. all work just fine. I have all my music on my SD Card and everything else on the internal.
P.S. When opening the internal memory in a PC it will still have an ExternalSD folder, but it will be empty. I would advise not deleting it.
There's something like 1.5GB just for apps. What the heck are you doing to "overload" it??

GPS maps will easily overload the internal SD card. If they let the map location be set, that would fix it, but most do not (yet).

That would be great, if I had unlimited data or constant access to wifi. I do not have the first, and at work, the wifi is locked with a password only the bosses get. I have a usb wifi adapter on my computer that will share my internet with my ad-hoc enabled devices, but alas, the charge does not have this capability either (unless my endless searching has missed something somewhere). So direct storage and access is my only chance (also, I have limited space on my computer, so storing and listening to them there is not feasible either.

well, you don't have to download all of the files at once - just one at a time. perhaps the night before you can sync the book you want to listen to your phone to have it ready the next day.

YES you absolutely can run the SanDisk 64GB class 10 micro SDXC card in your HD2. The phone does read the full 64GB and can access it all. You do have to reformat it first as it is in exFAT which can't be read. It needs to be formatted in FAT32. The kicker with that if you try to format in your PC, MS has deemed that FAT32 is 32 GB max and if you use the inbuilt format in any version of Windows, it will only format it in exFAT or NTFS. I also tried using a program called SDFormatter but it would not allow me to format in FAT32 either. I ended up using EaseUS Partion Master Home Edition, which is a free program. It worked a charm, and was very fast as well, Then I xxcopy'ed my SD card contents onto the new 64GB card and installed it in my phone. Both my WM 6.5.5 and my SD Android 2.2 are working perfectly, though the Android may be just a bit slower now and then. Both my 32GB and my 64GB are class 10s. I use XXcopy to keep a backup of my SD card on my computer, just in case. I update the backup every couple weeks or if I have updated anything significantly (which seems to be all the time with Android apps). I am running Core Cell Evo v4.1 and CoreDroid v.08. Here are the links to Partition Master http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm and XXcopy http://www.xxcopy.com/xcpydnld.htm

Sorry I was in an HD2 forum trying to post this, and the XDA system told me there were similar messages I should check out first. I was in a rush and it never occurred to me it would look for messages in other forums. I assumed it searched for similar messages in the same forum. My bad, expected the XDA system to be smarter than that. Ditto for deleting a message. Warnings with SD cards for A2

So I recently ordered a Sandisk Class 4 16 gb sd card for my Atrix 2. I wanted to be able to keep a backup of a ROM at all times while having 500 songs on my phone..but 2 gb just didnt cut it.
So i tried to connect the card with my phones USB cable while having it in the device, but it just wasnt showing up on the computer. I had to end up using a card reader.
It still works...just something to keep in mind while buying SD cards.

Although problems do not seem to be prevalent with the slower class cards, it might be a good idea to follow Patriot's advice regarding formatting. The suggestion was posted by Patriot in response to a review of a 32GB class 10 microSDHC.
Patriot acknowledged a problem with hemorrhoid OS and 32GB class 10 cards and suggested a temporary fix of performing a full format on a Windows PC with a 32kb allocation size, obviously FAT32 since stock hemorrhoid does not recognize NFTS.
The reply can be found in this review although the specific page will change if more reviews are added.

I got a 16gb class 4 sandisk and I am formatting it in my computer using following method:
I inserted the memory card in my E71 and connected it to my computer in mass storage mode. Then I started formatting using fat32, 32kb through my computer. But it is taking ages. Since last 2 hours, only 35% is completed. My questions:
1) Can i stop the format in between ? Or will it lead to certain faults?
2) Is the format this slow? Or should I try formatting it by putting it in adaptor and putting the adaptor in laptop slot and then format?

I'm using a Kingston 32GB Class 4 card, which is actually in my SGS3 now from my A2, and I have never seen anything to complain about with it. I still hit high benchmark scores as noted with my A2 as well as my SGS3, thinking though that I may try a higher rated class sdcard for the SGS3, since it doesn't seem to have the issues that the A2 has seen. But, a little more digging around has to be done before I make that kind of jump! (Better safe than sorry!) But, yes, the Class 10 cards will -eventually- give you grief if you try to use one with the A2. Not sure the 'scientifically-proven' answer to give here, just know that from everything I have seen, which has been substantial enough for me to believe that...

You should try a re-formatting of the sdcard, as you likely have some corrupted app data/other data that is causing the rebooting. A Class 4 card should give you no problems like this, unless you have some issues like I just mentioned.
And if you're trying to restore app data from, say, Titamium Backup, I recommend you do not do this. Just try a fresh format of the card, and do not restore data to it. Run your phone afterward for a good while to test. If your phone continues to reboot after you have tried this, changes are that you can rule out the possibility of the cause being due to the sdcard, and we can explore other possible known culprits...

And Doggcatcher has the majority of my podcast downloads failing. This has persisted after a couple reformats. Thoughts?

[Q] My phone identifies the SD card and data on it, but few things are accessible

Alright, first let me start by saying that I hope this is in the right area and i'm sorry because i'm sure this question has been asked to death.
I have a Galaxy S 3 Running stock with android 4.0.4 (Not rooted)
I also have a SanDisk Ultra 64GB SDXC class 10 MicroSD card (Formatted to FAT32)
I have had the phone a month and for probably the first week I was using the card in the ExFAT file format...Then random card identification problems started to pop up. So I scoured the web for a short time and found that the issue could be solved by reformatting the MicroSD to FAT32 at the expense of not being able to have single files larger than 4GB. Everything worked for a good week, then suddenly the phone didnt know I had music on it anymore, my player stopped and i confusedly navigated through songs that weren't there. I removed the card and reinserted and the files worked again.
Well today the phone is doing the same weirdness again, it is identifying that there is in fact a 64GB MicroSD and the amount of data is correct. It is also allowing me to navigate to the files in ASTRO, even my PC still detects and allows me to Add/Delete files from the MicroSD...BUT my phone will NOT use it. For example, if I go to camera and want to take a picture with the destination being the MicroSD, the phone says "What MicroSD?", also my media gallery is empty (Save for the files stored in the internal storage) and my music player is empty as well.
Anyway, I didn't know what course of action I should take. Does it sound like one or both of these items needs to be returned/reformatted/smashed with a hammer?
I am not sure if the sgs3 supports 64gb cards, i suggest you first try with a 32gb card to see if it is a card reader problem or a mmc problem

If that's the case why does it state on all the North American Cellular phone websites that the phone supports "Up to 64GB MicroSD"? Seems crazy that such a large feature could be so buggy.

The GSIII (international and US) variants do support 64 gb micro sd cards. It's advertised on the box.
It sounds like your sd card is failing you. Definitely backup all your data to a computer and think about replacing this micro sd card via manufacturer warranty.

+1. Sounds like bad card.
Ok I will try that. My next question is when I get the new sd card should I format it into the FAT32 file format?

If you want recovery access must be Fat32. Otherwise does not matter.
Thanks for the advice my good man. I'll post an update after the (hopeful) free exchange.

[Q] SD card just died

I've had a 32 gig micro SD in my phone for a while now. I recently took my Siii out of my pocket only to find that it says the SD is unmounted. Odd, but not unheard of in the world of custom roms (paranoidkangdroid 2.something, rather recent though, 4.2.2 JB) So i do the sensible thing: Run into the storage menu, and lo and behold, its not registering. I pop it out and in, not registering. I reboot, and the damn thing still isn't registering. Then I take an old 2 GB micro SD and try it. This one worked just fine. 32 gig however does not. I move to my PC. Pop it in a micro to regular SD adapter, and the computer doesn't mount it. It does mount every other microSD of mine though. So can anyone tell me what the hell happened, and how I can recover my stuff?
Actually you can't, your sd card is corrupted and it's known to happen with this device that's why I always keep a weekly backup on my computer with everything. Especially the ones ordered from amazon the high capacity ones as far as I've seen.

And now its not. This is frustrating. I don't want to spend money on a new card dammit.
Try booting a linux live cd and see if you can save anything, thats how I recover deleted tomtom maps in the past.

Is the SD card damaged or can it just be reformatted with a card reader on a PC (fat I am assuming)?
I was about to start using an SD card to backup the internal storage. It doesn't sound like this is the best option and backing it to my PC would be better.
My set up to start was cleanrom 6.2 with envy kernel running fine for a week. I had my sd card disappear today twice. PNY class 10 32gb less than 2 weeks old from best buy. Popped it in my pc and it was recognized no problem. So I transferred my data, formatted in fat 32 popped it in phone, no problem. Transferred data back and was Ok for a few hours. Swapped my battery for a freshly charged one and upon boot, phone said the card was damaged, to reformat it. So, I pulled it out and popped it in my pc. Pc said card was damaged. I opened a command prompt and ran a chkdsk /f and it fixed an issue with the file system. I then proceeded to restore my cleanrom 6.2 backup. So far so good. I am thinking it had to do with an app, but I can't be sure. Upon googling this, it seems that some people have had an issue with external sd cards with this phone.

I'm not sure exactly what brand or model you have for your SD card or when you purchase it. However if its a SanDisk and it was purchased before December 2012 there's a chance that it was part of a bad batch. I had the exact same problem with mine I have a UHs 1 32 gig SanDisk. I read somewhere on the internet that there is a known problem with SD cards from that company built before December. When I spoke with SanDisk they confirm that and said the newer batches have been corrected. Long story short if you're using an ultra high speed or for that matter any card by SanDisk call up there customer service explain to them the problem and they will send you a brand new one. The entire process took about a week for me.

Did you try my suggestion? Ive recovered numerous files using a linux live cd and/or a mac. Try putting the card in a network printer or mem card reader if linux and mac os isnt possible. Ive recovered my files, including those from a 16gb micro sd card, using those methods in the past.
Okay, so it works
Alright alright, i didn't expect this to get many responses. Anyway, it now works. It appeared to be fried, my mac, PC, ubuntu machine, and OG droid wouldn't even recognize that a card was inserted. Nor would my GS3. My solution? after turning it on and off a few times, I just left the card in it and set it aside for an hour. Lo and behold, it now works. The SD now works. It was fried, and is now unfried. I don't know how, I just guess I am lucky. Or aliens. Either way, I am happy. Not gonna jeep anything more than music on it though... Ah well, thanks for the help XDA!
If I were you, I'd back up everything on that card to my pc, and exchange it if under warranty. If not, chuck it, and purchase another card.
Not worth taking the risk again.
Consider yourself lucky so far

So I have had my sd card corrupt a few times now, so far this has seemed to help me recover my data.

The problem could be a sandisk SD card:
(Outside link) crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/samsung-galaxy-s3-fault-is-caused-by-sandisk-memory-cards-50010684/
I read about the SD problems after just getting the S3.. decided to get a different brand card from the store.
