Cracked rear glass, still waterproof? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

So incracked the rear glass from a very small drop.. Metal is not bent.. Barely a scratch.
Is the rear glass piece full glass? Or glass over plastic? Is my phone still waterproof?
Assurance says $175 for replace the device... If crack is just esthetics only.. Then I'd just keep it until they have replacement parts.

There's one way to find out for sure

The phone is not waterproof, it is water resistant. If the back glass is cracked, I would expect that the overall integrity is compromised.

I read that back plate is glued,
and there's no way to check whether glue still intact or not.

Well the question reallyis whether the rear piece is fully glass? Or is glass over plastic./metal sheet.. If latter then I'm fine.. If prior.. Then it'll leak under water pressure..
I don't have much on the phone itself.. But id rather not be without a phone until I get replacement.

I'll take my chances but not with a crack seems the internal parts would get wet. Same ip rating as a lifeproof case. "Resistant" or whatever I will take a bath with it. Not because I need to but because i can. Lol

well I"ll be dunking this phone in the water this weekend.. as soon as I get this Note2 backup phone working.

when looking at this video, there seems to be a black film that's the glass is adhered to. it's GS6 but I don't see why it would be any different.
I'm out $175 eithways if this phone dies underwater anyways, but if I can just hold out longer knowing that that it's still going to be "WATER RESISTANT" then I'll just do a rear glass swap myself and save some $$$ and doing a insurance claim.

and here's another example of the "METAL FILM" under the glass
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxHAgPu7XAc

Couldn't wait. Let my son play in the tub with it for about 15min inside the spigen clear case..
Typing on it now..

Did you end up testing it? Was it waterproof after being crack?

Hey guys i fix these phones and the back is just glass but its tempered it has a watedproof adhesive that doesnt let the water go in. I have the same question if it is waterproof or not because the only way to tell if it still is is to submerge it in water it depends on the crack. If you get it changed from a repair shop ur phone wont be waterproof because they dont have the same waterproof adhesive like samsung does

Sadly I dropped mine as well. I could pay $175 for new one through insurance, but I opted paying $80 for a life proof case. I should have got the case in the fist place.

Bump- Can anyone else confirm this?
Mine has been cracked for 2 months now and I haven't gotten it wet really except for wet hands etc.
I feel the same about the factory/OEM adhesive vs aftermarket as there are replacement parts on eBay now.
Any new insight is appreciated

I also broke the front glass .After that i tested it underwater several times .Suprisingly, my s7 edge is still waterproof..So; i can claim that your s7 edge ll be still waterproof until the ruber seal is not broken.

so you're saying that the phone is still waterproof with a rear crack in it???

It all comes down to how big each crack is and where its placed.

repaired device is NOT water-resistant any more

The guy didn't use oem adhesive around the edges of glass and took of the paint which creates a strong bond between the glass and metal frame

Samsung Galaxy S5
For those who still have one, If there is a crack then you should let water come in contact to the phone. I had the bottom of my phone cracked it fell in some water and stopped working the next day. :crying: Don't test the limits on the phone.:good:

I ordered a back on eBay for 6$
Pretty sure it's glass coated in paint ...can't or don't know how to post a pic on here... I have the same problem of cracks .. but I'm opting to fix it my self spent around 25$ for supplies

[Q] Why do my GG devices scratch so damn easily?

My first gorilla glass device was a zune HD and it didn't have any noticeable scratches on it for a month, but after that there were some damn big noticeable ones. Now I've had my samsung infuse less than a month and it's got about 5 scratches, 3 of which are easily noticeable in most conditions. Is it just me or is gorilla glass complete bullcrap? Yes I'll admit I had an iPod touch for about 6 months and the screen NEVER scratched after all the drops, kicks, and touches. But it was a piece of crap and so is Crapple so I gave it to one of my friends who I think destroyed it for fun(lol).
My pockets never have ANYTHING in them, no money, no sand, no dirt, no keys, not even headphones. So why the hell is gorilla glass scratching like plastic? I swear the plastic case I got with it has only twice as many scratches.. Now every time I put my phone in my pocket I turn the pocket inside out and smack it a few times to get any hard-to-see particles out... but there's really nothing in my pockets. It's also got a few chips like someone poked it with a nail really hard.
I should also mention my friend with an atrix looks like someone stabbed it with a knife after only being in a pocket in a briefcase with a fabric wallet (no buttons or any metal edges).
nothing is perfect,i using screen protector on all my device.
i dont believe manufacturer
Yeah I'd have a screen protector on it but I need to wait until my friend gets his new job at this place with a clean room so there's no dust or any crap floating around, it's impossible to apply it in a house without dust getting on. I already wasted $10 on a pack of them, I'm not even going to order until I'm sure I can get somewhere with a clean room, maybe intel's manufacturing facility
Gorilla Glass =/ diamond?
Use a good quality Matte-finish screen protector or a tempered glass one. They are much less prone to scratches from fine particles. Ever used a device that was NOT gorilla glass They looked like a post-war battlefield in just a few weeks. Nothings perfect though, which is why even gorillas are prone to scratching
BTW Which device are you using?
I said samsung infuse but I didn't capitalize it because I'm lazy. lol
this morning it looked like someone had took sandpaper to butter... I HAD to run out, pseudo-cleanroom my bathroom, and put a screen protector on.

[Q] S3 Glass Replaced, Digitizer Freak Out Under Pressure

I bought brand new S3 with cracked glass. The previous owner only had it for 5 hours, everything was in working condition when I bought it.
I changed the glass with a China eBay replacement. Removed old glass and tested the phone before installing the new glass. Everything works, I continued and laid 2 mm 3M tape all around the edges and applied the glass. Everything works.
BUT, if you PRESS HARD in one spot, it looks like oil is between the digitizer and glass. The screen will twitch until locked and unlocked.
Anyways, I haven't been able to find an answer in a few weeks, so I am asking.
I have since removed the glass, and tape to see if the tape was the problem. I do not have a film on the glass, and cleaned all surfaces with rubbing alcohol. Any other suggestions?

Same problem here but i believe my problem is because of shatter resist thing. Someone check this thread..

Shatter resistant thing?
Did you break your glass before?

I shatter my glass screen even though screen protector on!

Hi friends
I am complete upset. Today I wait for weeks for Nillkin glass screen protecter becauase fkn amazon ship it from china. I finally get today, and put it in the phone. Not one bubble friends! Very nice. Too bad because tonight, me and friends went to dancing club. I show them my z3 and tell them i install perfect screen protect with no one bubble! I prove to them that it works and drop phone on floor to show them phone is protect. When I drop, THESE PHONE GLASS SHATTER! Screen protector no work for me, now i have broke screen
Will sony give me refund if I say phone cracked on its own? I can say it bent like iphone so the screen cracked. No is my fault. What you please think?
Omg. Biggest facepalm ever. Screen protectors are supposed to protect it from scratches, not drops.
This is really very, very funny. For everybody but you of course.

Wow, were you drinking??? Why would you drop your phone? A screen protector won't protect your phone from an impact like that. Good luck getting a replacement. Sony shouldn't give you another one, because it was YOUR fault!

Glass screen protectors are supposed to be quite sturdy though.
But still I wouldn't throw my phone on the floor on purpose...

Well, yeah. The screen protector is probably fine! No bubbles, see?
OP, complain to both Sony and the people who sold you the screen protector, and please CC us in on it!
I remember doing a dropping test with my previous Xperia Z and a guy that had a galaxy s4. We dropped it on rock floor, NOTHING happened to my month old Z, he cracked his screen glass.
Typed on my Xperia Z3 while underwater.
Yeah screen protectors dont protect from drops. Hell the biggest cause of shattered screens comes from dropping a phone on its corner. Any phone is about as sturdy as a mirror.
This only guarrentee you can have are something like Otterboxes where they will replace your phone if it shatters.
I am certain it was a corner impact. No tempered glass protector will save you from a corner impact, which is where the glass is weakest and exposed (not covered), because all the force goes through a single point. Tempered glass will however do fairly well in a frontal impact where bit can absorb and more evenly distribute the force shattering only the protector.
I am pretty sure they can tell an impact shatter, probably some minor frame damage can be seen as proof. Even if it cracked due to a manufacturing defect it's hard to prove and Sony only replaces for a single fine crack if they deem it's their fault which is not often. You are out of luck.
I am sorry to say but you deserve it, you will be less careless next time. If you want to impress your friends with drop tests buy a Nokia 3310 a bit dated but it should serve your purpose well without any protector/case.
It'll still crack if it impacts on the edge.
I known you've seen tests with hammers and pointed objects.
But the protectors does not cover all the way to the edge, the edge is still very vulnerable.
this is just sad.... unless u put armen concrete around ur phone u wont save it from cracks or shattering glass... a thin piece of glass is not gonna protect it, nevertheless sony will easy see that there are dents on the aluminium bezels and know u dropped it

Actually concrete wouldn't absorb shocks too well. Being a hard substance it would transfer all the impact energy into the phone encased within.
So this guy bought a z3 and the same day dropped the phone on purpose? Screen protectors that protect the z3? What the hell.... *I'm laughing near my little dog, and its look like "you have some problems man"

these are garbage!!!
I know there was someone who had a non-halo install on their Note 4 but I just tried this morning and I got a halo with the tempered glass. Good thing their refund policy is good.
Do not buy
Now I know why they're selling these for so cheap. Not just because the tempered glass doesn't fit properly and has the halo effect, but the plastics, dry and wet install, aren't even cut correctly.
For the dry install: There is no way to center the button hole and have the rest of the protector centered.
For the wet install FRONT: They did a little better with centering the button hole but it looks like someone cut it by hand.
For the wet install BACK: I don't know what was happening when they made the back but I have the Verizon and apparently I got a different version because the camera/flash/sensor hole is not right. They dimpled out the area around the head phone which you cant line up if you want to have the speaker not covered. And I don't even know why they put notch in for the pry area, if that is what that notch is for, because its way off. And it also looks like they cut it by hand.
DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS PLACE.
This is an example of the back: http://goo.gl/8g890M
Its not the company.
Yes their shipping methods can use some better insulation techniques cost prohibited.
Their products are good used on other devices with success . Its not jus xtreme glass thats an issuem its the note 4 screen thats causing the issues.
For the time being untill a company makes a curved glass.
The hallo will remain unless you have verizon

Did you break it by trying to remove it?
My spartan glass has a very slight halo on the edges.
I do concur that the wet install has mis-cut edges.
Add me to the list of people that received a cracked glass screen protector. Their packaging is crap. I've ordered glass screen protectors from eBay and not one was cracked. Those came in decent packaging.
And they only gave me 1 out of 3 dry protectors.
I got the Xtremeguard tempered glass for the Note 4 but the edges do not stick down and it raises slightly. You'll see it. I can't imagine this thing a week later with all the dust and stuff built up from going in and out of pockets. RIP

scratch resistance VERY CONCERNING

Ive not had this phone for even a month and have never dropped it or put it together with any hard materials like keys. I just noticed a huge scratch about an inch and a half long on the front screen.
This is extremely unnerving especially being advertised as an improved scratch resistance compared to previous model.
How can gorilla glass 5 possibly scratch never having been in contact with any hard surfaces??
It's honestly to the point where it just seems ridiculous. I've had my s7 over a year and not a single scratch and I've dropped it multiple times.
I have same experience. Im taking care of my phone a lot. I dont even put it on the table if i dont out a piece of paper under it. In pocket phone is alone. Most of the time phone is in the case and even after this care the phone have several scratches. So, yeah, the phone isnt so scratch resistant. I hope i can find some proper flagship from metal next year, because as most i love this phone, this is unnerving.
A little help is a dbrand skin. You will get a new look, no scratches, and you can hide front panel behind the glass protector.
My screen has a scratch even though I've never put my phones screen down. Back is protected by cover. The only place screen is in contact with anything is in my pocket. My previous phone had Gorilla glass 3 and scratched only after a year.
Bought the S8 today along with the Samsung Led View Cover, hope that will keep my device from scratching :fingers-crossed:
Yes the scratch resistance of the S8 is not as good as in previous models. Gorilla glass 5 seems to be a downgrade (from version 4) or Samsung hasn't really put gorilla glass on S8.
The glass of my S6 had much more resistance to scratches.
I have only the Samsung Cover Silicone , Curved screen protector dont feet and killed the touch so i take it off
Yup. The back is also supposed to be GG5. I've had a screen protector on the phone since day one. However I went ONE day without a case or skin on it, and sat it down on the table at a restaurant. Result; several micro scratches on the back. There was nothing on the table that was harder than glass, so it should not have scratched.
SO glad I put a TGSP on the front (with LOCA glue). Probably going to get a skin for the back. I had a clear on on it, but the midnight Black shows every speck of dust or bubble under the skin. My wife's Orchid Grey doesn't show dust or anything, and her clear skin is nearly invisible.
I would be interested in starting a class action lawsuit against corning. They seem to be the only ones who don't hold any accountability to produce quality parts or to accurately represent their product improvements.
they'll just deny it until the bitter end like their Note 7 debacle
I noticed some scuffing on the black frame from small debris getting trapped between the frame/body of the phone and the case causing scuffs/scratches when you move around with the phone in your pocket.

That's why I put a skin on mine that covers the back and sides.
People just must not look after the phone to well ive had my s8 for 6 months no scratches nothing and its in my pocket with keys and everything also dropped it 2 meters and not a scratch dent or chip. The front is gorilla glass and the rest is lumia glass as the manual states. Dont know how anyone could scratch the s8 without immense pressure being applied.
had mine 3 months no screen protector but in a case, no marks on screen yet.

I am super careful with my phones and keep my phone in a case and carry it around in a microfiber case as I did my S7 and s6 Edge and this is the first phone that I have ever scratched and could not figure out how it scratched. I have 2 friends with S8s. And both scratched uber easy. The screen should be way more scratch resistant for the price. Maybe just some of the screens are defective, but for the cost the screens should be way more durable.

The screen can get scratched (kind of worn out) if you keep the phone in your jean pocket face down (facing thighs). The stitching seams are enough to scratch it. So I have learnt to keep mine facing outwards.
Honestly, this is the saddest part of the phone. Ever since I got my S8 I have been taking damn good care of it and used a case since day one and at least 4 times per week I wipe it with a microfibre cloth, immediately wipe away fingerprints and still after all this, mini scratches all over the front glass. Even my iPhone 6 which I used for 3 years had better scratch resistance.
I'm in the same situation. I got mine at the end of august and have a scratch an inch long from the top to the bottom.
