[REVIEW] Samsung Galaxy S7 (Edge) Review - THE REVENANT EDITION. - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Hey guys -
This is my review for the S7 Edge. I based a bit of this off the movie "The Revenant". Since in MIchigan we still have snow on the ground and it was a balmy 20 degrees F.
Anyways enjoy!

Nice review!

Great review, making me even more excited for delivery tomorrow now...
One thing I noticed was the criticism of the hue on the edge when it's a white background... You'll never be able to change that as it lies in the physics of light!

Should I switch to the Galaxy S3 from the Galaxy Nexus? UPDATE: VICTORY!!! BOOYA!

I have been having issues with replacement Galaxy Nexus' having incorrect color calibration and I kept complaining to Verizon.
They offered to send me a different device, and considering the Galaxy S3 has better hardware, I was thinking of taking them up on the offer.
The only thing Im really holding out on before I make my final decision is for the dev community to get the bootloader unlocked.
So do you guys think I should stick with my Nexus or have Verizon send me a Galaxy s3?
UPDATE: After talking to multiple customer service reps, they told me the only thing that they could do for me was update me to the DROID RAZR...I told them that that is not a "comparable device" and all of the multiple service reps still wouldnt budge. They even went as far as to tell me that their system WILL NOT allow them to upgrade me to the Galaxy S3. Anyway, so I was fed up with the customer service B.S. and so I emailed their executive office. After about two days, I received an email from them asking for the account info and some contact info. They told me that under normal circumstances they wouldnt do this, but she told me the issue I was complaining about with my Galaxy Nexus was a know issue, but at the moment, they dont have a fix for it. She also told me that the customer service people were lying. That the system will let them do it, but it is just a little more difficult. The only thing that I am kind of knit picky about is that theyre sending me the blue one, because they dont have any white ones left, but its whatevs...at least I am getting a free phone and I won.

Even with the locked bootloader the s3 is still pretty amazing. It seems like everyday someone in the community is making something for this phone to make that much better. Ive never owned a nexus so i cant compare but im sure u would love this phone.
I upgraded from the GNex. You won't go wrong here. First, the TW interface is really nice in my opinion. The battery is insanely great and there was no custom kernel on the GNex that gave me even remotely the battery life I get now. The camera on this phone is amazing. It has a bigger display. Better processor. I say go for it you will not be disappointed.

Agreed! :highfive:
I get a lother better signal and 4g in more places then I ever did on my gnex

Thats a very good question. In my household we have both the S3 and the Nexus...and I cant say which one is better. I personally have the S3 and love it, even with the locked bootloader theres still soo much you can do. The Nexus is a fantastic phone on its own, but if you have the nexus and crave the development...then stay with it. Or find someone with a S3 and switch phones for couple days
The final decision is yours, but:
While the Galaxy Nexus is a great phone, I feel if you have the opportunity, you should get the Galaxy S3. While the locked bootloader isn't it's greatest feature, it's roaring development is. There are devs out there working extremely hard to unlock the bootloader on this device. And even though the bootloader is locked, the XDA community has managed to flash custom roms/kernels onto the device using the awesome development of Kexec.
And even without root or any modification to it's firmware, Samsung's TouchWiz interface isn't too bad and it doesn't affect the phone's performance much either, because the phone itself is quite powerful.
However, if you want a phone that was made for development, then the Galaxy Nexus may be best for you.
So my next question is ...if I got it...Pebble Blue? or Marble White?

We have both colours here, with a white Amzer Shellster case+holster for the white, a black set for the blue.
The white has more of a uniform, understated, contemporary aesthetic in any lighting, and almost feels iPodish in terms of first impression, but is far more approachable. That is, I feel current iPods are not only chunky (which is OK), but their thick metal band around the sides and boring uniformity make them look like pieces of industrial equipment with a white face tacked on. By contrast, the Galaxy S III in white presents as more of a fully sleek and "professional" device, overall. The white case we use keeps that overall feel relatively intact.
The pebble blue is brushed and offers different chroma depending upon the lighting and angle, so there's more interest in its somewhat variable presentation. You can't always pin down how it looks during daily use because it doesn't seem to uniformly reflect ambient light sources from the combination of its brushed colouring and rounded surfaces, which is kind of neat to me. There is a possible purplish hue that can come off the surrounding metal-looking edge and Home button at times, which I see as a positive: it adds to that meandering notion of its colour values and personality. Generally a darker phone, sometimes comes across as medium/medium-light in tint and even tone if light is hitting it squarely (and, depending on the type of light source).
My highly subjective impressions, at least. I can offer pics, if interested.

No need to attach pics, thankyou for the detailed analysis...I went and checked it out the the VZW store and I think if I switch to it Im getting marble white.
I still havent called Verizon about getting the S3...but now that the bootloader is unlocked I am going to...the only thing I am afraid of though is that they are going to tell me I can't get the S3 because it is more expensive than the nexus... I know I can fight the fact the specs on the RAZR are inferior to the Nexus, but how do I fight the specs on the Reazound if they try to offer that to me?

I'm not sure they'll make that switch for you from a nexus to a s3

If you want to fight the specs on the Rezound, say the screen on the Rezound is "remarkably" smaller than that of your Galaxy Nexus. I put "remarkably" in quotes because you can stress that word when explaining the differences, even though the Gnex has only a .35inch gain on screensize compared to the Rezound. Screen size does play a factor when some people buy a phone, you could use that to your advantage.
I came from gnex an don't regret it one bit. I was hesitant because I flashed roms for the nexus all the time looking for speed and battery life. Guess what, this phone has that stock! I love it. Rooting an customs roms are just a nice bonus.

There seem to be mixed reports so far, I've spotted a couple of users on here who say they think it's slightly washed out - but it's hard to assign too much credibility to them as many are simply saying that because they're used to amoled and perhaps don't realise how inaccurate those colours really are.
There seem to be some online hands ons that suggest it's as good as the one on the lg g2 - I hope that's true. Since it's an IPS screen what I would really like would be for someone to do a comparison against an iPhone 5/5s, since Apple take calibration very seriously on both their phones and MacBooks.

Do you have a link where people refer to the screen saying is just as good as the LG G2's? :silly: , was a bit dissapointed with my nexus 4 screen, the washed out colors and nicht so good viewing angles mainly, although i muss say that it was leap and bounds better than my galaxy nexus screen ... :silly:
I agree , Apple KNOWS how to calibrate their screens, actually i calibrated my nexus 4 to look similar to my macbooks pro retina display...

Yes, the verge has an article called "Nexus 5 v LG G2: See the Difference":
http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/1/5054944/nexus-5-vs-lg-g2-in-pictures
A google search using the terms 'first impressions' or 'hands on' should find you a couple of others. The nexus 4 was, well, not calibrated at all and was very murky and washed out. So I'm certain it's at least superior to that. Personally I would wait (if you can) until anandtech's review as they always discuss and take seriously the calibrations of any phones they review.
Yep, Apple are the dogs b******* when it comes to calibration. I used to have a lumia 925 which nokia are smart enough to include with a white balance and saturation calibration tool. Using that in conjunction with my macbook screen and the same photo I was able to perfectly calibrate it. Got rid of the Nokia for other reasons but they should serve as a lesson to others manufacturers that it's really not that hard to include something simple like that so pro users can get the bang for their buck.
I said it looked slightly washed out to me but I was used to the LED screen. I'm getting more used to it now though, it looks really great but I still would like the colours to be a little bit more vibrant.

I don't know I mean those wallpapers are positioned differently so it's hard to conclusively tell. In any case it might be that the g2 is too saturated. For me the benchmark will be any iPhone from the 4s onwards, or perhaps the htc one.
Again, if anyone on here has an old 4s/5 in the house I'd be extremely grateful if you could give your impressions after you receive your n5. Just go to google and find a stock picture of something, put it on both phones and max brightness and compare the two......me love you long time!

Yeah the walpapers are positioned differently, but look at the intensity of the orange and red, it does look like the G2 has a more saturated screen, ive used the phone (G2) and the screen does look amazing , a little over saturated maybe but i find it perfect, i mean it's no galaxy s 4 ULTRAsaturated like...
Are people here mistaken a more true color representation as washed out compared to screens that are over saturated? I know it is hard to tell in a picture but the G2 colors look over saturated to me next to the N5.
It is like a TV calibration. You have people that like their colors to pop and have all the auto settings on which over saturates everything which looks freakin terrible but they love it. Then when you throw the TV in movie mode and turn off all those auto settings at first you might think everything looks washed out but then you realize how much true to life and real the picture looks and once you get used to that, throwing all those over saturating settings back on will just make you say yuck.

Yeah you'd be surprised/shocked how many people don't realise how ludicrous the colours on their AMOLED devices are. Problem is of course like a bee to a flower, we're hard coded to be attracted to these punchy colours.
On the Galaxy s4, even the display mode that's called 'STANDARD' is way WAY over-saturated. Most professional calibration websites that have looked at it say that 'MOVIE MODE' is the one that comes closest to correct (but again, is still slightly over saturated

I have a friend who keeps bragging about his galaxy s 3 camera, he says the people with iphone 5 ask him why does your photos look so amazing ? when they look at the photos on his screen and I was like ehhhh , its because your screen is over saturated ... transfer the photos to your phone and well talk
As much as i hate the glossy , horrid body of the Galaxy S 4, the physical -iphone ripoff- home button and the ui that was designed by blind people aka touchwiz , samsung does make good things too, aside from the best tech specs on the market, this option to choose the display mode is genuinely good, it should be on stock android too... they take on android beam is better implemented too, they have the best cameras on android (aside from the xperia z1) ... credit where it's due

Yeah it's good they put the option in, as I said before I would have preferred that samsung do what nokia now does and provide proper dual sliders for colour saturation and white balance - that way it can be set to as close to the perfect/rgb specification as possible. Kudos to samsung for the profiles though. If anyone still has an S4 'Movie mode' is definitely the most accurate.
I have an unfortunate yellow jumper that someone snapped me with using my S4 and in 'standard' mode I'm glowing like I just came back from a two week holiday in Chernobyl.

If you mean the top centre bezel area that's not the led light that's just the light in the room oddly illuminating the round earpiece.
The led light is located in the bottom bezel.
UPDATE: Oh right ok, didn't realise that earpiece is that colour with the white version! How bizarre...glad I ordered black.
Bought white version believing my front would be completely black. That white earpeace killed it. I enjoy watching videos with a fully black front so it feels like a TV.

I realize this isn't going to win any photography contests. I was just impressed because I couldn't see the clouds in the sky, most of the pond was an inky black spot, and most of the ducks weren't visible. Standing there in the dark looking at the scene then looking at the picture was a stark contrast.

Yes, that was on auto. I was out for my morning run and got curious as to what the GS7 would do with such a poorly (and oddly) lit scene so I pulled it out of my pocket, double tapped the home button, and took that picture in a matter of about 5 seconds. I am sure that someone who knows how to adjust the settings properly in 'pro mode' could take it much better.
As for the guy from the first comment.... I have now seen some of his other posts. I have had some pretty spirited debates about phone choices with my friends (IOS vs. Android) but to seek out a forum full of people using some other device just to throw shade is a special kind of odd to me.

I disagree, but we are all entitled to our own opinion. I've taken more pictures I can upload later tonight after my exam or tomorrow morning. The S7 tends to overexposure and was out images. I want them to fix that issue because otherwise it's great.

I disagree, but we are all entitled to our own opinion. I've taken more pictures I can upload later tonight after my exam or tomorrow morning. The S7 tends to overexposure and was out images. I want them to fix that issue because otherwise it's great.

Yes I look forward to seeing them. If it is the case that the S7 is overexposed, then hopefully they will release an update to fix it like with the S6.

Calm down and go to the S6 forums. Why are you still here?

To be clear I like the S7E's camera, but I don't like the post processing Samsung does. It won't let me save a RAW image yet otherwise I could easily correct them in Photoshop CC2015. The 6P might have slightly darker images in areas, but it captures the true colors of things which I like. I'll post them up tonight/tomorrow because I have an exam at 1800-2000 as I mentioned.

Note 5 vs V10

I'm looking to switch outta the note 5. Does any one know if the LG v10 is comparable?

I'm not sure if I want a phone with IPS screen.
I've had both. I jumped to the v10, and was back to the note 5 within a month.
The V10 is good, but not quite there yet on performance and bugs.
The camera is excellent though. I liked that better than the note.
Overall, it wasn't a bad phone for me. My wife still has hers and likes it.
It is a different experience for sure

How come?
IPS screens aren't bad at all. Colours are pretty on point too especially compared to Samsung and their over saturation of colours.

AMOLED and dark theme save battery. I'm used to the AMOLED screen but that's just me. I don't like how pixels are lid up on a black background. The Moto 360 has the IPS screen and it's pretty annoying to look at at night with an always on watchface.

Ahh okay. I see a lot of people complain about that on the IPS devices. I didn't mind the ones I've owned in the past. I will say that I do love the Amoled screens but I just don't see the hype of the superBlacks that people rave about, though I do love my screen not Cyclops'in me at night though. Lol.

Same here...its a nice concept but v10 has worse battery life than note 5 and the second screen has weird shadowing issues that I could not stand ...not really a second screen...software splits them up...when you load cyanogen on it is obvious and I hated it.... hope this helps..

That sounds awful. I never get the point of the second screen in the V10.

Yeah pretty much just a dedicated recent bar or edge app bar...pretty gimmicky....note 5 is such a better device overall...I don't know why every phone doesn't have front facing speakers tho...the only thing I would change really...but viper does a very nice job improving default speaker performance.
I usually don't even need to turn it up past halfway!

Seems to have a lot to do with how people use their phones. I'm personally a heavy reader, and there's something about Kindle with the black background setting and an AMOLED display. The screen just sort of disappears when you read in the dark, and all you see are the letters floating in your hand.
After three Samsungs, I switched to a Nexus 5 a couple years ago and haaaated the always-glowing LCD. Picked up a Note 4, breathed a sigh of relief. Went through the usual annual "Samsung sucks, I'm never buying another Samsung ever again!" tantrum after that and tried an iPhone 6 just to "gain some perspective". Haaaated the always-glowing LCD yet again (and so much more--you can't answer incoming VOIP app calls from the lock screen? What??), and went right back to Samsung with this Note 5.
So I've basically learned two things about myself: 1) I need zero-glow-blacks and 2) whining about Samsung has never changed the fact that they're the only brand I haven't thoroughly hated owning.
I agree. Samsung is keeping the best AMOLED screen for their flagships. The 6P's AMOLED screen is great but you can clearly tell it's not on the same level.
