Uh oh...
Overall, I'm very well pleased.

My attempt at taking a picture of the moon. I'm very impressed, my last phone Note 3, didn't even come close.

was this picture taking with default settings? aka not manually adjusting settings.

haven't started really messing with RAW editing yet. this was a random shot before I even knew how to use the thing....

[Q] camera issues?

What's up with the camera? it seems pretty crappy compared to the Droid Incredible that I just replaced. It doesn't seem to rotate when you take a landscape as opposed to vertical orientation. Uploading pics to the by text keeps the picture in the wrong orientation. I'm hoping the camera gets an overhaul at some point.
I Donno about all that. I just think it takes crappy photos. Side by side comparison of the Thunderbolt, Continuum, and the DX, show its image quality is worse than all of them... by far. That's indoor, outdoor, resolution and white balance.
Its the worse camera on a phone I've owned since my OG Droid. Even if memory serves me right, my BB Tour had much better image quality.
I can upload some cropped comparison photos of the aforementioned phones if there's intrest.

Very odd complaints considering that every single professional review i've seen talks about the camera being one of the best, if not *the* best they've seen on a phone. Mine comes today, will be curious to see how I do in this dept...the camera quality was one of the things that sold me on it.
I've found the pictures taken with my Charge to be on par with my old Incredible--which is to say, very good.

The picture quality on mine is better than my HTC Incredible and it had a awesome camera compared to the competition!
Video quality on the Charge is also better than my HTC Incredible, it's smoother and the image quality is superb!
Only annoyance is the case design allows easy fingerprints on the camera lens that I frequently clean off with a microfiber cloth to keep it from messing up pictures or video.
*If your camera isn't taking good pictures, clean the lens with a microfiber cloth.
**Also to note, the El' cleapo supplied Class 2 SD card is too slow to take good quality HD video. I changed mine out for a Class 10 card and it's silky smooth and fast.

Are you still within the time frame to exchange? I took some shots with mine today when I got it and they came out just as good as the reviews promised. Easily the clearest and cleanest pics i've gotten from a phone, ever. There has to be something going on with yours. Even a warranty exchange might be worth it.

I think the quality of the pictures is good. It's just the camera software I think that sucks.. Just seems to be clunky and hard to take a good picture. The Dinc was just easier all I was sayin.. Is there a setting or something that will auto rotate the screen when switching from portrait to landscape? I'm going to just buy a cannon rebel for good pics, but this is handy when backpacking or something you know..

Night vision....

This was at a little before 6am this morning. To my eye the sky was dark but the GS7 really does have a KILLER low light camera (it's practically like having night vision). I am impressed in every way by this phone so far.

Yep. There's noise but it was very dark and every other phone camera I have ever used would have only shown a couple of blurry street lights. There's detail there that I couldn't see with my eyes so I'm impressed even if you aren't.

I realize this isn't going to win any photography contests. I was just impressed because I couldn't see the clouds in the sky, most of the pond was an inky black spot, and most of the ducks weren't visible. Standing there in the dark looking at the scene then looking at the picture was a stark contrast.

Yes, that was on auto. I was out for my morning run and got curious as to what the GS7 would do with such a poorly (and oddly) lit scene so I pulled it out of my pocket, double tapped the home button, and took that picture in a matter of about 5 seconds. I am sure that someone who knows how to adjust the settings properly in 'pro mode' could take it much better.
As for the guy from the first comment.... I have now seen some of his other posts. I have had some pretty spirited debates about phone choices with my friends (IOS vs. Android) but to seek out a forum full of people using some other device just to throw shade is a special kind of odd to me.

To be clear I like the S7E's camera, but I don't like the post processing Samsung does. It won't let me save a RAW image yet otherwise I could easily correct them in Photoshop CC2015. The 6P might have slightly darker images in areas, but it captures the true colors of things which I like. I'll post them up tonight/tomorrow because I have an exam at 1800-2000 as I mentioned.

Why is nobody talking about the Astrophotography mode?

I have searched the internet for examples of Astrophotography with the Google Pixel 4/4XL and couldn't find any other than what Google has put out. So, I recently went to the closest International Dark Sky Reserve in my area and captured these photos.
Am I the only person interested in this feature? ?
No, you're not alone I too have been playing with this. I just got my tripod mount and live in the country. I haven't had time to get some shots like yours, very good!

The picture I took was the November full moon.
It certainly a great feature, but it is also pretty niche.
First, you have to have a tripod or other way to hold the phone steady. This isn't that difficult to figure out, but it also means that all the people that simply rush outside to try it the first time are going to get crappy results if they try to hand hold it.
Second, having access to a dark environment away from light pollution is very helpful. Unfortunately, the vast majority of us live where light pollution is a real problem. Even the smallest towns have so many lights that it prevents these dramatic pictures from being taken. The images I have been able to take are "meh" at best. Impressive technologically, but meh photographically......

It's a great feature, but it's simply not viable for most people due to the excessive light pollution from most cities. I had to drive 1.5 hours away from home just to take my shots: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-4-camera-review/

As does anyone attempting to photograph the stars. On a side note, my city is changing out the lighting here to improve star visibility. It has been working. I took this in my backyard. I used Photoshop Express "Vibrant" filter and this is it. All Astrophotography has post processing.

Yes, but that's the problem: Most people won't want to go that far just to take photos of the stars. They might do it during the occasional vacation, though. Since there aren't that many people taking Astro shots, the feature won't get talked about that much.

Have you tried with a regular camera? If so, can you still capture even with the light pollution?
I drove an hour and a half to get these photos. I had to do research to find the location, e.g. Light Pollution Map app, local Dark Sky Reserve, and opportunity to access it.
I want to get the Milky Way. I'll have to buy the Photopills app and plan for that shot months in advance. I already know where I want to get the shot, otherwise I would have to plan that too.

Loving the first one, great image, you have a flair for this and composition.
Is that a lens flare in the third one? And the bright object bottom left a planet? Venus, Saturn and Jupiter set late afternoon, early evening and like you it's dark by 4:30 - 5, so Saturn?
I remember now we had a Saturn+Moon conjunction. Nice one.

I think it was a plane but usually those usually give big light trails. Managed to get a light trail from the space station a few weeks ago so surprising what you can see.
Not sure about the planets as I'm still working out where they all are.
Managed to get Andromeda galaxy tonight (right hand side of photo) but not as much detail as I hoped cause the moon's out again.

Hand held, noticed that the low light processing on P4a goes much faster than with Note 10+ which needs a long, long time holding it steady.
btw, I found the same place pic taken w/ Note 10+ almost exactly one year ago after they updated its(Samsung's) low light process. When comparing, we have to remember that Note 10+ initial price was more than x3 that of Pixel 4a. I'm still impressed with what Pixel 4a camera does.

I'm trying to construct a little contraption to steady my phone for taking long exposure pics on the go. My car has a roof rack so I want to be able quickly and securely attach the phone to it, slide on or prop it up to take couple of shots and drive on w/o much of any special efforts e.i. setting up tripod etc...
The sky, far from any light pollution sources while driving on some remote highway at night, presents sometimes a chance opportunity to get a crisp view of the stars.
Have you tried using the 'double exposure' controls?, interesting feature, happy to see it on Pixel 4a.

I was trying to get astro mode to trigger early this morning with Night Shot but it never activated. Is there something special I need to do? I was holding down the shutter button but wasn't sure if it was because of too much light pollution from neighborhood street lights or if I was doing it incorrectly. Planning on trying to piece together my own make shift tripod just for fun shots and to see what I can capture.
A lot of processing is done to make great shots, easy. So research exactly what triggers Astro mode for more. Here is stock camera on a tripod in a room with doors to control lighting. First is camera, second is nightshot since Astro did not trigger from light source (this is done by app, so no screen option popup) Third is Astro because I reduced lighting to trigger... No device movement AT ALL (tripod)
I'm looking to take some astrophotography shots on a clear night, any recommendations on a cheap tripod? I'm in the UK.
Astrophotography photo I took on the side of the road in complete darkness. I put the camera in night mode and a 4:30 timer started. About 3 minutes into the shot a truck drove by.
Edit: When I attached this photo, the website shows the photo upside down. When I uploaded a 180 degree rotated (upside down) image, it still appears upside down. WTF!?!?!?
Astrophotography mode (4 minute timer appeared):
Non-astrophotography Night Sight mode (no timer):
Astro mode. Street lights were on nearby though. Gonna go into the fields some time and try and get some better ones.
Random picture made few days ago. If you take an closer eye you can also see the conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn.

Blury note 20 ultra photos??

My phone is 3 days old… im noticing blury pictures mostly in backround.* Some with dead on images.* Seems like its not focusing.* Took a picture of my truck amd sent it to my email where i first noticed it on the computer.* Was 108mp picture and the backround looked blury or washed out.* *I also tried my sisters fresh out the box note 20 ultra and same issue.*I was setting her phone up. S10 plus didnt have the issue of same photos.* Used sisterd old phone to compare. 1 picture.
I'm blown away with the camera. I never really care, not really much of a picture taker, but a few I've taken so far are quite impressive.

I am having the same issue as well. I have noticed that the camera blurs the back and even some parts that it is trying to focus on. I might just contact Samsung and see what is up, but you ain't alone here.
I'm on my 6th Note (the 9 & 10+ are with family members for comparison) and I'm having blurry photo issues too, getting worried.
Also the battery life is nothing short of crap... hoping it's still learning.
Not happy so far.
In the last 2 months I've had an Oppo Find X2 Pro and then a Huawei P40 Pro + and the cameras on both were better

I thought it was just me or my phone. You can see the image i took of my sisters s10 plus with her gallery showing with my note 20 ultra. Its very badly blurred or washed out. So i took my sisters fresh out the box note 20 ultra which i was setting up for her and it had the same exact results. I made sure the camera settings was the same on both to compare pictures. Then i pulled up my gallery on my note 20 ultra… and took a picture with the s10 plus. It was a world of difference. There was no blury or washed out colors or words. I asked my girlfriend who also just got the note 20 ultra if she noticed anything blury with her phone and she replied yes and sent me a picyure she took of her daughter eating. The backround was very blury or again washed out with color. I confirmed issues with 3 people that i know personally that have the note 20 ultra.
I cantacted samsung thru Samaung Members chat. I got the typical replies that will all result in a hard reset. Im not trying to do that after i just took an entire day setting up my phone to yield the same results that im getting on 3 different phones. Im afraid unless many more people start seeing this ill have to get another note 20 ultra and fear itll be the same.

Ive been in the note and galaxy family since the s3. I am seeing little hiccuos here and there with the phone. My battety life has been pretty good tho. I see a almost like a glitch every now and then here and there. Cant explain it. Im sure that in time will be fixed with updates. The other thing that is driving me crazy is i use Single tap to swipe feature which allows you to answer the phone by tapping the answer button rather then swiping. But when i activate it… .it brings up a perminant accessories menu on your screen that floats on any screen your seeing. With my old s10 plus it did this to but you can comoletly remove the menu and hid it. On the note 20 ultra you cant. There is an option to hide it on the edge panel but it still gets in the way and i accidentally touch it and i see it on all my screens.
Fix from Samsung
I spoke with Samsung and they said I can file a warranty claim, free of charge, and some expert will take a look at the issue. You can take it locally or have it shipped out.
I will wait and see what fixes arise, if nothing shows up in a month then I will get it sent to Samsung.
Aren't the backgrounds supposed to naturally blur a bit? I remember reviews talking about the "natural bokeh" effect.
Hey I have the same issue. It blurs the surrounding focus. I also checked my s10 and did not have the same issue. Is anyone else experiencing this? Its weird bc this is supposed to be the best camera out there.

I hope not..it ruins the picture in my opinion. But again even the picture i took with no backround is bad and blurry.

Yeah, I am having the same issue as well. I don't mind it that much right now since I do not take a lot of pictures or videos, but I do want it fixed soon.
The background blur is because of the sensor size.
If the thing you want to be in focus, is in focus, everything should be ok.
