Hi, I have a HTC 7 Pro that I believe has partially corrupted data on the SD card causing it to fail to boot.
If you try and start the phone it just hangs on the HTC splash screen but if you remove the SD card or replace it with another it will boot windows to the point of getting the corrupted, changed or missing SD card message and won't let me access the o.s, just emergency calls.
This leads me to believe that the data has some kind of corruption on the SD card that is loaded as windows boots and rather than giving the error message its actually crashing the boot.
The physical SD card is not important to me but the data that is on the phone or SD card (I know its spread a cross the two and encrypted to that device) is important and desperately want to get anything I can from the phone if its possible.
The data I want is photos and videos, there loads I could loose without really caring but I had the only photos and videos of our daughters 3rd birthday on it and due to my pc suffering Mainboard failure, I had not been backing up to one of my drives. I don't use auto upload on SkyDrive as it does it automatically regardless of weather your on WiFi or your mobile data and I don't want it hammering the mobile connection!
like it was done just to wind you up, Windows phone SkyDrive app also makes you upload files one by one rather than being able to select groups of files and upload at same time so I did not back up via SkyDrive manually when on wifi cos it was insanely long winded, agghhhh!
So what I would like to know is of any method at all that I could read the content of the phone without booting it?
With the card out, the phone will boot to the point where it has loaded the bulk of the o.s and things like the battery meter, WiFi icon, locks screen ECT are all working but just won't let me past the error screen.
I also fear the main of what I want is on the SD card which is preventing it booting at all if installed so reading the phone in b loader seems like the only option if its even possible.
Any help on this would be massively appreciated.
Thanks, Steve.
Hi
I don't know if this is an issue with the handset, Lollipop or what, but I had a hell of a struggle assigning custom ringtones to a friend's contacts. It didn't matter where the contact was stored (handset or google account), only the default ringtone would play regardless of what had been chosen.
Having seen issues where Android doesn't like (perhaps understandable) the external SD card for storage, such as Apps, I assumed this might be a problem, so moved all the mp3s to the internal storage...still the same problem.
Removed the external SD card and everything worked fine...RESULT!
Since the card had previously been used in a BlackBerry I then assumed that there was a problem either with the format or even that perhaps the mp3s were in a directory that I could not determine. After recovering all the data, the card was reinserted and reformatted through the "Storage" option in "Settings". I did assume that everything should work no that the SD card had been reformatted correctly...nope!
It seems that the ringtones will only work if the SD card is removed, regardless of the fact that the ringtones are on the internal memory and the SD card has just been formatted by the phone and contains nothing other than the file/directory structure that Lollipop created itself.
I thought this strange and wondered if anyone could shed some light on why. I only ask because without the SD card, the phone is a little tight on memory.
I did trawl the site and net for such answers, but only found people telling me that it can be done. Me, I have a Moto G (1st Gen), love it and have no need for contact specific ringtones...I'd only assume someone else's phone was ringing, lol.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi all!
I'm having an issue with my S7 (SM-G930FD), I hope somebody can help!
I encrypted my exFAT 64GB Samsung EVO Class 10 Micro SD card about 5 days ago while on holiday (about 40GB worth of photos and videos) without any issues, overnight.
This morning (back at work now ) I noticed that my recent photos were missing. I went to Storage in Settings and saw that the SD Card wasn't actually mounted. Under Portable Storage (Under SD Card) it just says "Ready" like in the photo attached.
No matter what I do, I'm not able to decrypt the SD card or read its contents. I took the card out and used a computer to see if the whole card was corrupt, but it doesn't seem to be because I can see the files in their encrypted state - with file names but without any viewable data or metadata.
Seeing as my S7 is the only device that can decrypt or read the data, what can I do now? As stated, I've tried to decrypt but after I enter my password, I just get a continuous progress bar labelled "Checking SD card" that doesn't end.
I hope someone can help, if not, I've lost about 680 photos and videos from my family holiday :crying:
Patiently awaiting some input - I'd appreciate any help. Please see screenshots for further reference.
Thanks,
Uts.
I take it my data is long gone in that case... balls.
I don't know guy. Seems to me you ought to be more patient. The messages say it could take a while. If it's worth it to you let it run overnight. You would probably get an error message right away if something was wrong. Decrypting 4G of data encrypted with AES128 could take a while on a phone.
I've let it run over night too buddy.
I think I'm going to take the card out of my phone and factory reset it (run without a card until I need more space) because I've read that installing system updates can change the encryption key on the phone, hence not able to read the encrypted SD card. If thats the case, shame on Samsung for not stating that before installing an update!
I don't remember installing an update recently though...
Go to settings, lockscreen and security, screenlock type, and select none. Reboot the phone. U should be able to do what u need to do w/ the SD card now. It's weird but that's how I had to deal w/ that situation. It happens once in a while to me

You, my friend, are a life saver. I did what you said, and it popped up with the Encrypt/Decrypt screen after about 2 minutes once I'd restarted and I tapped Decrypt... hey presto! Took about an hour and a bit to decrypt and then the card was readable!
Thank you so much!

cdigga101 you're an absolute legend!
I spend days with Samsung phone help and Samsung in store trying to get advice.
Your method worked. I owe you a beer, mate.
WOW cdigga101, your method really works. This is freaking amazing!!! I owe you man...how can I repay you!!!!
happy to hear that so many could find help!
I have a similar issue:
- After reboot, the SD card is shown as mounted, folders and files show as encrypted
- when I click on decrypt card an error message explains that the card could not be decrypted
- after this, the SD card is not showing as mounted any more (it says no card inserted)
unfortunately the above did not work for me. any advice would be really great - thank you so much!!
Hey everyone
So my other half recently had an android device with the micro sd set as internal storage
The phone has broken down on her and now I can’t seem to get the photos off the sd card
There are loads of photos on there from our first holiday and such so I was wondering if there is any way to get them back.
I have got the phone up and running again but it won’t read the SD
Also she didn’t have a google account linked at the time (she used aptoode)
If encrypted, it means you have a password. Then, if rooted, use an app like Disk Digger, to get your photos back. If...

Hi, I have bought a new, larger SD card for my S7. The old SD contains only files, anyway in Samsung Gallery I have saved as "favourites" many photos that are saved on the SD card and I don't want to lose those preferences by unmounting the SD card before transferring all the data to the new one.
To avoid the problem I am thinking about switching off the phone, then removing the old SD card and cloning it to the new one, inserting the new one and switching back on the phone. This way the phone shouldn't (?) see any change. I had this done with a secondary drive on my PC and it didn't see anything happen besides the drive's model and capacity. Could this work on Android too?
I am thinking about cloning instead of just copying the files to be sure that all the "created on dd/mm/yy" etc data will stay the same.
I haven't found much on the web. Thanks in advance to anyone that will help
