Best way to squeeze battery out of this thing? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The nexus 5 is currently on stock and I haven't rooted it yet but I was wondering if I could partially or significantly increase battery life by rooting it. If I could what suggestions do you guys have? What works well for you?

[Q] Roms & Batery Life

Hi, mitchel0 here, quick question,
Do different roms have different affects on battery life? If so, is there a place I can look to find what roms have the best battery life? Would major roms like CM10 have the best battery life? Sorry if these questions are redundant, I am running Codename android on my ATT HOX, and I am satisfied with everything this rom brings to the table, but the battery life, so if anyone can shed some light on this topic, it'd be greatly appreciated :fingers-crossed: thanks!
P.S, could flashing a different kernel help my battery life?

Sense will have better battery life in most cases
Have you tried using a battery optimizers app like juice defender or easy battery saver?
I'm running easy bat saver and I'm getting x1.8 extra battery. But I also keep my mobile network off unless I leave the house out of range of ny router.

There is no good answer to your question. For every ROM that people claim to have "best" battery life, you will also find people that have miserable battery on the same ROM. Just too many variables in how people use their phones.
Also, radio usually has more to do with battery life than ROM. If you are having battery issues, try a different radio.
Thanks guys. One more question now, will different radios affect my coverage? Like will I get better service with one but worse with another?

Possibly. Or you may see no difference at all.
Battery drain may be due to poor reception, if the phone is constantly trying to connect to the network. The right radio can sometimes fix both the reception and the battery drain.
But don't expect a miracle. Differences can sometimes be subtle, if even noticeable.

CyanogenMod battery life

hey guys. I just bought an Nexus5(well...like 1 motnh ago actually) and I realized that I think I like CyanogemMod better then the default android(used cyanogen mod on my Galaxy S1 for 3 years).
My question is, how is the battery life on CyanogenMod compared to the stock default android 4.4.2 rom that nexus comes with?
Thnx in advance.

There's no good answer to your request imo.
You should check this out to have an idea of the average battery life. (or have a look at CM11's thread)
For instance you can install more apps thanks to root permissions so you will be able to install more apps and use more battery but it doesn't mean that the battery life is worse.
One advantage is that you can try different kernels and settings to find the best configuration as per your needs.

As with any battery life comparison, it's almost impossible to answer properly because there are far too many variables.
You'll get various answers saying it's much better / worse / the same. Ultimately the responses will be of limited value to you, because everyone's usage is different.
Thankfully you can always backup and try something out. Revert if if makes things worse.
Find out what's best for YOUR usage and preference, not someone else's...
And repeat this for every device / ROM / kernel combination
Battery life is what you make of it. I can make my phone last 8 hours or around a day and a half.
to prolong battery life I recommend turning off mobile data and sync when not in use. You can look into tasker (I think) to turn it on at specific times. Quick tiles help out or the app "power toggles" which I use
Ok, thnx guys. I think I will make an nanDroid backup and install cyanogen mod and see what happens.

Cyanogen is well known but don't forget that we have other awesome roms
Flashing and testing is the solution.

This can't be stressed enough....
Not that I don't like CM work but there are other Devs who work just as hard to bring some awesome stuff to us.

Best rom for the S6? (From a battery perspective)

Hi
What is the best rom from a battery perspective right now and how much will it increase battery life? Right now I get 3-4 hours on 4g and 5-7 hours on Wifi on stock, rooted with greenify. Will a lite rom help even more on battery? Also, which would you say is the best right now and why?
Thanks in advance
Questions like these(best rom bla bla) are not tolerated every rom here is a result of hardwork and efforts from devs which are all unique in their own ways, would suggest you to try and use what you like.

Why aren't questions like this "tolerated"?

You won't notice a difference in battery life from Stock to custom, except maybe a decrease due to wake bugs maybe.
Your battery life is pretty good.
Rule of thumb, ROM's might allude to having better battery life than others, but they almost certainly do not.

Well no idea either. I asked what the best rom was from a BATTERY perspective. Some are for speed, others battery and some features.
I fully understand they're all hard work.

Uhmm... The community? Well as far as I see now there is no such issue's in the Galaxy S6 forums, I come from the Galaxy S2 community where any similar questions(literally anything that started with BEST ROM...) are flamed by other members and occasionally outright locked or removed by the moderator's.
I myself never had an issue with those kind off question though.

The question is pretty much not answerable for a number of reasons.
People get different results due to how they use their phones and what software the load and run on the same ROM, and to answer your question someone would have had tried all the available roms for enough time to form an opinion.
Lastly, this is a general S6 forum so people here are using all kinds of different variants of the S6 making the comparison even less likey.
I have a stock rooted ROM and am quite pleased with the battery usage on it, YMMV.

Based on what? Reaching 8+ hours SOT? If no, then the answer for now is XtreStoLite.
In theory, the lightest ROM with the least amount of bloatware may extend your battery life. But in reality, phone usage is the main culprit of battery life. I have tried different ROMs with my old S3 trying to extend its battery life. But in the end my efforts are in vain as I put too much work for a very little gain of less than 30 mins. This also applies to the S6. Modifying usage (i.e. turning wifi/bluetooth when not in use, working with dimmer screen, etc...), buying extra battery or powerbanks and chargers for charging on the go and anywhere all did the trick of preventing phone usage interruption due to a drained battery.

A question about safely changing rom for my S6 Edge.

Hello XDA, I'm currently viewing some custom roms with good battery life for the S6 Edge, because my battery life is terrible. My edge model number is "SM-G925F".
I want to know if this rom is compatible.

Thanks.

After trying most of what's on offer I have come back to the oem nougat 7.0, with Ultimate Kernel flashed by TWRP then root with Magisk.
You can find the Ultimate Kernel here at XDA.
Then comes the task of debloating... There are many threads on this topic and it will be up to you to decide what you disable or uninstall.
After weeks of experimenting I now have battery life of more than a week on standby.
Don't bother using Greenify for this model, the standard device manager does a better job with device security disabled.
I used the Magisk debloat module BTW.
Hope this helps

Root and custom ROM/kernel or not!?

Hey i got the Pixel 3 and now i'm thinking about rooting my Pixel 3. If there are some ROMs or kernels that maybe are better for battery life than stock android 9?
Guys can you recommend some ROMs or kernels?
Thank you!
As will always be the case, no one can really answer as your usage situation will be different. Run stock at first, with root, and use better battery stats to see what your usage is. I am on DU rom and battery is ok, but I have one social media app that is always running. I can make it though the day though, so not bothered.
